  1. May not be your cup of tea, but it's hardly a "waste" of resources, seeing as how it seems to be a commonly requested feature, and something similar games often have. I remember reading that it was considered for TOW but they decided against it because it's not exactly trivial to implement, and it's not really something that you can just tack on later and expect to work well. So I doubt fan input either way will change a big design decision that has in all likelihood already been made. Personally I have no problem with 1st person-only games, but it sucks for people who get motion sickness and that kind of thing.

  2. What looks worse? We haven’t even seen Avowed and most likely won’t see it for quite some time.

  3. There were like 10 seconds of presumably in-engine footage in that trailer (the beginning was CGI). And if you think that part looks worse than Skyrim I dunno. If anything it was probably the best looking part of that show.

  4. I mean technically a trailer is worse than a full game. So I guess you're right. Skyrim game > avowed trailer

  6. Outsourcing. With Microsoft paying for the development, Obsidian can and will use outsourcing on this project. You can get a ton of art assets by outsourcing some of that development to freelancers and other studios. As far as I know Obsidian has multiple Outsourcing Managers working for them, whom they've hired after MS bought them. Just look at the credits for The Outer Worlds: https://www.mobygames.com/game/playstation-4/outer-worlds/credits They used Virtuos studios for a ton of art assets and animation. Chinese labor is just so much cheaper than hiring the same amount of artists and freelancers from USA.

  9. Well two insiders seem to agree on this information. That 7 months in pre-production doesn't mean much. It could and should have been a very small team at that point. Back when Obsidian was bought by Microsoft those insiders were saying that there's a project at Obsidian that Microsoft was really interested in. That project was not The Outer Worlds, nor Grounded. To me that's another proof that Avowed was being worked on in some capacity prior to the announcement that Microsoft has bought the company. Full production on the game obviously started when Microsoft deal finalized. Obsidian started recruiting heavily sometime before the official announcement. Even though the game has been in production for two years now, doesn't mean that team has been quite big in the beginning of "full production". Obsidian has always been quite agile in moving staff members from one project to another. For example concept artists are likely done with Outer Worlds way way sooner than those building the areas into the game. Pre-production and start of production relies quite heavily on concept art, so when environment artists and animators etc. jump in, they have a base idea of what the Leads / Art Director is looking for. Based on the job openings at Obsidian, they still aren't done staffing their projects.

  10. Off the top of my head, Norman Lloyd, Jane Withers, June Lockhart Nehemiah Persoff, Rhonda Flemming, Angela Lansbury, and Eva Marie Saint all started in the Golden Age / pre-1960. I'm sure there are more, but not many, if any, as big as de Havilland

  17. A Grimrock clone in the Pillars setting? Funny, but I wouldn't mind that, or even a PoE blobber done in the style of the BT:classic remaster. I do think that the Pillars special text encounters would fit quite nicely into a game like that; as well as the inclusion of high quality quality portrait & encounter art.

  18. The Outer Worlds was done with Unreal while PoE and Deadfire were done with Unity3D. If guess it was just easier to build a Linux version with Unity than it is with Unreal. Since Avowed is also using Unreal and the official release platforms are XBox and Windows and Microsoft has no reason to support gaming on Linux I don't think there will be an official Linux version... ever.

  19. After 110 hours and 4,5-ish weeks (had a vacation in-between), I'm nearing the end of Persona 4. 10/10, apart from dungeons becoming monotonous I've had a blast. Can't wait for a hopeful P5R PC release. Started playing Your Turn To Die, a free puzzle death game. Sadly it's incomplete so far, but it's the first chapter was great.

  21. Seems like they are not working on the DLCs. Carrie Patel is Game Director on the 1st one and Brandon Adler is the most likely candidate for the 2nd one as his LinkedIn has him working as a Game Director. Though as Cain & Boyarsky are the co-directors on Outer Worlds, I'm gonna presume they are aware what the DLC teams are creating even though they are not fully working on those projects.

  23. the issue raised in the article vol linked is legit, but as we noted, the headline is clickbait. is not that the biden campaign is turning folks into trump voters or is somehow preventing latinos from voting at all. if enough people don't vote, biden will lose. the number o' democrats in this country for decades and decades and decades has outnumbered republicans, and even the electoral college goofiness wouldn't prevent near universal wins for democrats in the Presidential election if democrats actual voted consistent. the percentage o' democrats who actual bother to vote trails republicans by a significant amount. such indolence is enough to level the playing field. democrats know they have a voter turnout problem, which is why it is so important for democrats to encourage as many democrats as possible to register and vote. problem ain't turning folks into trump voters. most fundamental issue is getting democrats (and independents) to vote. as we stated so recent, am likewise concerned the democrats, if they get control, is gonna continue the same shady shenanigans as trump utilized, but they will feel justified in doing so 'cause is payback for trump. idiots. one o' the reasons senate republicans backed trump in spite o' their concerns 'bout his character and competence is they believed they were mistreated by obama and the Congressional democrats. is not they like trump. nope. four years o' republicans running roughshod over democrats is gonna result in some ill will. coupled with the terrible polarization we are suffering from in this country, a return to government by compromise is improbable in the extreme. HA! Good Fun!

  24. I don't know about timing-based modifiers. There are a multi-button options, but I don't recall seeing a timing-based option. There are a lot of things you can do with the Steam Controller because of the touch pads. For example, you can set up the right one to act like a mouse and you can configure mouse acceleration, haptic feedback levels, etc.

  25. this version of the guide is very slightly out of date (sorry). a more up to date version is on gamefaqs. a couple of differences: - slightly lower resolve (and no longer using shorewalker sandals) to increase the chance of affecting yourself with sparkcrackers, and increasing the duration of both sparkcrackers and blunderbuss modal - slightly higher constitution to be able to stay below bloodied more safely post-5.0: - using helm of the white void (instead of fair favor) for +10 accuracy with sparkcrackers (along with a few other abilities/explosives) - using ring of focused flame (instead of entonia signet ring) for +10 accuracy with sparkcrackers (along with a few other fire-based abilities/explosives) - use ooblit as a pet to increase the duration of arcane veil, escape, BDD, and a few other misc buffs. i forget if i mentioned in this guide, but there was a stealth nerf to this build post 5.0. It used to be that sparkcrackers had a very slight aoe duration, which meant that with enough explosives skill you could get multiple attack rolls, all-but guaranteeing you a solid hit and upping the chance for a crit. This isn't the case anymore. So the build adapted a bit to maximize the chance that you get hit in the first place thanks to the +20 total accuracy you get with them (not counting a possible additional +10 from devotions for the faithful). the other thing is that sparkcrackers requires both a deflection hit and a will check to succeed. if you have arcane veil or escape active, you will very likely miss because of having a super-high deflection. the general approach i settle on these days is that i use sparkcrackers as an opener (sometimes before combat, so i can try multiple times to get a good hit if needed, plus the sparkcrackers noise can lure enemies to my party), and then when in fight rely on trying to get flanked or to bloodied (the extra constitution in the newer version of this build helps a bit). arcane veil/escape and such help me moderate how well i can stay at bloodied or less. i then use sparkcrackers or the blunderbuss modal opportunistically either if my health dips above bloodied or if i'm below bloodied and want to trigger on the edge. sometimes i don't need to worry about later sparkcrackers because i use some nukes (either my own or from a party member) to lower my health to bloodied and the initial sparkcrackers just helps me get set up and do some initial DPS. hope that helps. edit: there is a pair of gloves somewhere (i forget what it's called) that grants you two uses/day of "sparkcrackers." only they forgot to stealth nerf this sparkcrackers, so it still gets multiple attempts with enough explosives (and unlike actual explosives also benefits from stats). you can get these gloves as a failsafe.

  26. Worth noting that Obsidian had dropped both GOG and Linux for The Outer Worlds even prior to the Epic deal and the Microsoft aquisition. Could be attributed to the publisher, but it's not like Microsoft will be any better in that regard.

  27. So, with my X570 mobo I get PCIE4.0. That doesn't do anything for video cards yet, even a 2080 Ti doesn't come close to saturating PCIE3.0. It's unclear whether any Ampere or Big Navi cards will fully saturate 3.0, but for now the only tangible advantage of the newer PCIE standard is with NVMe SSDs. Here's the thing, though, as of right now, there's only 1 PCIE4.0 capable memory controller out there and so basically all the PCIE4.0 SSDs read and write at the same speed since the memory controller is the bottleneck. While it is faster than what PCIE3.0 is capable of, the Phison memory controller does not come close to pushing the limits of PCIE4.0. This is a long winded way of saying that, for now, I'll probably just reuse my existing SATA2 SSD as a stopgap until new memory controllers come out that push the limits of PCIE4.0, since the existing PCIE4.0 SSDs, while faster than 3.0, are not that much faster and they are a bit more expensive. Better hold off for now and get something BLAZING FAST 6 months or a year from now.

  30. I don't buy the Living Lands either. Living Lands is a lawless wild place with eccentric inhabitants. It's not a place where I would expect to see a huge statue of "noble Galawain" on the side of a mountain or stone fortifications. Then you add the supposed story of the game: "Fight against incoming threat of tyranny". In the Living Lands? It's a lawless place, everyone is a threat of tyranny. That "storyset" doesn't fit the Woedica/Aedyran references in the trailer anyway, unless that poster misunderstood and it was "be the incoming threat of tyranny" (from Aedyr). Going by the intro paragraph, that person received vague descriptions of where the game start and decided it was the Living Lands based on them. Green hills, forests, mountains and adra fits most of Eora landmass. The poster doesn't appear to know what is a Spore/Sporeling thought...

  34. OK, funny story about something @Gromnir said about the police being your best friend when your car is broken down. I believe it was 1998. '97, something like that. I was working in my own business (electronic and mechanical test equipment calibration and service) and going to school at Broward Community College in the mornings. I had just worked the entire night at Florida RF Labs up in Stuart and was on my way to BCC in Davie for a class. Going down I-95 one of my radiator hoses burst. So I pulled over and it took two seconds to realize what was up. I didn't have a cell phone then, just a pager. Anyway there was a Discount Auto Parts store less than a mile away in Pompano so I climbed down the berm, over the fence and walked about four blocks. Less than an hour later I'm walking back with a new hose and a bottle of antifreeze. When I got back to my truck a FHP car (Florida highway Patrol) was behind it with the lights on. I walked up, waved to the trooper, popped the hood, got some tools from my test kit, and got to work. The Trooper walks over to me and right away he's being a d--k. "This your truck"? It strikes me as an exceedingly stupid question that begs a sarcastic riposte, but I figured I needed this guy on my side. "Yes sir" I reply and give him my license and registration. He looks at it for a moment and asked if I needed him to call a tow truck. "No sir, give me time to replace this radiator hose and I'll be on my way" At this point I was back to work and he looked me up and down and said, brusquely, "You have 20 minutes and then I'm having your truck towed". No offer of help or advice or anything. Then he turns on his heel, walks back to his car and gets in. Some how I figured "calling me a tow truck" and "having your truck towed" were two VERY different outcomes from my perspective. Well, thankfully the Chevy S10 left plenty of room between the radiator & engine front and I had the hose replaced and engine running in 15 minutes. Before leaving I walked back to the trooper and told him in a tone that only an idiot would think was gratitude "Thanks for all your help" He replied back without a hint of irony or understanding "That's what we're here for" You ever get the feeling that you just met someone whose continued existence it a complete waste of valuable air? That was how I felt that day!

  35. PoE as the world interests me due to its themes and central conflict. I am generally not a lore, if it doesn't "mean" anything. As such Avowed doesn't interest me becuase of its ties to PoE, though I am glad the IP is not completely abandoned. As the IP is seperated from Pillars, I don't expect it to be directly tied to it, and therefore I am not automatically interested in its story. It's also not lead by Josh, so I don't necessaty expect it to have the same feel and focus as PoE1&2. Though the main point would be, that if in unlikely case PoE3 would be made in the future, I don't think Avowed would be a mandatory part of the story. Unless, of course, they wrap up what could be Watcher's storyline in Avowed - I would be heartbroken about it as all my hopes would be brutally crushed. But it is Obsidian's big RPG, and I like Obsidian games. I am even keeping an eye on Grounded, even though it really doesn't took like my cup of tea. Luckly for me I am also capable of liking FP-RPGs - F:NV is still the best Obsidian game IMO. I definitely wouldn't stop playing a series I enjoy, becase it gets a spinoff I don't want to play - I mean I played a bit of Fallout2 recently, and Bethesdas Fallouts are garbage.

  36. Website clearly states First Person RPG, and trailers suggests the same, I am afraid. huh? That’s not Pillars of Eternity game. For all we know it might have little to nothing to do with PoE storyline, and might take place in a different time all together.

  37. I don't understand. Are playing games not because of the experience they offer, but because of their sequels? What if there are none to be had? Also, I do not think this game is a "sequel" to Deadfire.

  38. Is there any info outside this video? At the moment I would say its too early to call it "skyrim clone". OK, in the video we can see a first person perspective, you have a sword in one hand and cast a spell with the other. I did not see mentioning "open world", "levelling up by skill use" or "join every faction at the same time". I really hope they do not use the level scaling from TES, it killed any feeling of progress. I love gothic1+2 or risen1. Enemies stay as they are, but you start very weak and you grow stronger over time.

  39. Limiting what an individual character can do has important design implications beyond encouraging cooperation. You can have more interesting and fantasy-fulfilling skills and powers when the designers know easily what other skills can or can't be mixed. That principle is why the craziest skills in POE2 are limited to single-class characters. As soon as you allow players to mix and match you dramatically increase their ability to break the game, which forces the developers to be more conservative when designing skills. POE2's multiclassing, to me, is just the right sweet spot between player creativity and structure. I don't expect them to actually keep classes in Avowed, but I really, really would like them to.

  43. I'd rather have more resources invested into first person, than dilute the experience by catering to two different viewpoints. Better physics with full body awareness would be great, for instance. Proper support for non 16:9 resolutions with comprehensive FOV options would be great too.

  46. Ohh okay. That makes sense. I definitely prefer when you can switch between the two, but i find combat much harder in 3rd person. Only really use it when im traveling because it looks cooler. I don't really picture myself as myself in games. More like... How i'd want myself to act. Otherwise id just hide in a corner. Personally I think i would actually prefer being able to see my body in first person, than having 3rd person. Looking down and seeing nothing is unnerving. (there is a sick burn i just set someone up for)
