Well, we heard from my wife's cousin in Kiev. He's currently alive and well but got a gun and joined up with some militia or something.12 points

Bruce, perhaps you'd like to rephrase that into: They had no legal obligation to help the Syrians and sticking to treaties their request for asylum needs to be processed at their point of entry into the EU, not somewhere else. Because the way you're writing it boils down to: Ya, I'm not racist, but they brown, so we ain't helping.4 points

Looks like Germany is reneging on their refusal to ban Russia from SWIFT. Still needs to pass the 27 member vote unanimously, but... signs point to it being back on the table. The cynic in me thinks it's time to invest in the Yuan. Giant spoiler:3 points

Very big grain of salt on that, same as stories of large scale defections and the like (on either side). Not the poor discipline, that's extremely believable and in some cases well documented, but it's unlikely to be because the soldiers were 'conscripts tricked into fighting' or whatever. Most of the claims in the buildup were of Russia building up professional troops, transferred from Siberia etc; claims of conscripts tended to be from those who thought Russia still had a conscript army and any build up would therefore be conscripts.3 points

All things aside, you are one of the nicest people I ever met. ❤ I wish all the best for your friends and all the people of Ukraine. I hope this war will be over peacefully as soon as possible.3 points

Did any of you see Putin's statement addressed to the Ukrainian military, telling them to stop fighting his troops and to defect to his side and fight alongside his troops against the Ukrainian government? I honestly believe Putin has completely lost touch with reality and is now believing his own propaganda as being real. You add in his performance and physical appearance in that speech earlier in the week (which showed clear signs of psychosis), and all the stories about him in recent years about how he spends all of his time in isolation, is fearful of being close to other people because they will poison him or give him a disease, only talks to a very small group of advisors, etc., and I honestly think he's lost his marbles.3 points

We've had a bit of a cold snap here in the Bay Area, so I rode my bike up to a local peak on Wednesday. Not a ton of snow, but a nice dusting. I loved the 3,000 foot climb, but I was freezing on the way down. I ended up stopping a couple times just to get the blood flowing back to my fingers.3 points

https://www.reuters.com/world/europe/russia-no-longer-needs-diplomatic-ties-with-west-ex-president-medvedev-2022-02-26/ Quote of the ducky house owner from there: "He condemned as "really unfair" a decision by the Council of Europe, a rights watchdog, to suspend Russian membership, but added the move provided a good reason "to slam the door" for good on the organisation, giving Russia an opportunity to restore the death penalty for dangerous criminals" So a way to spite vile foreigners is to start killing own citizens. It's so...Russian.2 points

I just tried it: it works! Just used Driving Roar with Effort and a Mage Slayer to absoutely lock down enemy casters in an old savegame I had from Forgotten Sanctum. It even works with chants and all other hit rolls. You "only" need to crit with your hit roll (of any source) to trigger Hemorrhaging - and then and the Disrupion gets applied via the sicken or hobble effect (which don't have to crit). If you are wearing stuff like Hylea's Talons and Ring of Clenched Muscle you will even pply it multiple times with one crit roll. Add a scroll of Avenging Storm and you'll apply 100% spell disruption to a huge area with Dazing Shout for example. Well... you can't use scrolls as Mage Slayer so maybe use tHeaven's Cacophony now that I think of it. Seriously people, this is the renaissance of the Mage Slayer (Utimate run? )!2 points

It is, but because concealed health, it is not easy all the time. Mage Slayer is really particulary subclass : the ability Spell Disruption is my favorite melee effect (it is more an effect than an ability), 25% chance to fail with spell (stack 4 times), not only hostiles ones, is very big deal. But the subclass malus is too strong to consider as the same weight on the balance VS Berserker or Furyshaper I think.2 points

Changed my place from a 66 square meter apartment for a bigger one(121). I felt pretty bad when I figured out that they are not letting me close my balcony. 'It ruins the view from outside' they said. Oh well, that's that. Can't use the balcony for now. One of the cats is dumb and I don't want to risk the poor guy falling down from the 4th floor.2 points

Finished Solasta. It was quite enjoyable for about 50 hours, but I don't feel like having a replay right now. Got my money's worth though. The three dimensional movement was certainly a unique mechanic, and one that had been lacking in games of this style. Perhaps others will try that now? Maybe I'll go back in a few years and give it a go as druid.2 points

Furyshaper really is fantastic- his totems are really really strong. I think Furyshaper is probably better than Berserker overall. The only thing I didn't like as much with Furyshaper is that I felt like I was spending too much time casting at the beginning of the fight and not enough time being a Barb smashing things. The "feel" of playing a Barb has to go to Berserker- recklessly charging in, smashing things, and dying relatively frequently.2 points

The Ukrainians never took it back pretty much for sure*. As for what actually happened... who knows. I was surprised they even tried taking it permanently, but it seems to have worked and it seems that that is where the Russians in north Kiev are coming from. Other sources like the Brits have Russian land forces ~50km from Kiev still (which may be wrong too, who knows). *There's a rather weird video I saw from there yesterday morning of a random Ukrainian in a car asking some very confused Russian Paratroopers where the Russians had run away to, and there were no signs of the VDV troops being at all worried about imminent fighting. To be frank, that's probably psyops. "Run away from the Mongol Chechen horde or Chengghiz Han Ramzan Kadyrov will use your skull as a drinking vessel. Where are they? Well they're all over the place, you never know where they'll be: so you'd better run away wherever you are just to be safe, eh?" The Ukrainians have been asking for a summit for at least a day, I wouldn't take a press secretary saying there is going to be one at face value. Especially so when it's Pomarenko doing the translating/ interpretation, his connection with reality is pretty shaky. Believe it when both sides are saying it, not just one.2 points

The discussion I've seen is that the final 20% was a bit rushed, and this shows in confusingly cut content and some rough edges. Hopefully they will be able to address that. I did find it a bit short, but that's mostly because it drew me in and I enjoyed the experience. It did last for fifty hours, which is normally plenty.1 point

It could be, but doesn't really pass the smell test. Why would Russia even ask? They haven't even activated CSTO with Belarus. Checked and it's confirmed false, they were never asked for troops. It was also initially associated with a definitely false rumour that Syrian militia were going to be sent to Ukraine to help Russia. Probably both came from the same source which hoped to piggyback the Syrian rumour alongside the Khazak one; I'd bet pretty much anything that it's Turkish source since (1) the militia was meant to be from Raqqa, which is controlled by the US aligned Kurds and (2) Turkey hated the 'rumours' (not really rumours, very little doubt there) about them using Syrian mercenaries in Libya and Arsakh and (3) it amuses me to think of the typical Turkish nationalist reading 'Tengri news'. I wouldn't necessarily say that I would expect large scale defections now, but it's pretty much inevitable that there will have been some defections. Historically, a big chunk of the Ukrainian naval staff at Sevastopol defected in 2014 for example- including, rather embarrassingly, the newly appointed head of the Ukrainian navy and the previous acting head. More generally accusations of 5th Columns and Perfidy are extremely common in confused situations. Somewhat relatedly, I am rather nonplussed by the number of media comments talking about the Russians being behind schedule and bogged down. At the equivalent point of Gulf War 2 the US and friends were still struggling to take Umm Qasr, a couple of km inside Iraq with a population of 100k. I can't see any way there was an expectation to have taken Kiev or any other major city by this point, by anyone. I'd have said they were top end of expectations, not bottom.1 point

Playing the '71 Oakland A's in OOTP 22. The big difference is I signed Jonny Bench as a rookie in the '67 season so no Dave Duncan. So far in 12 years of playing OOTP I have yet to win a WS. And, much like the real '71 A's it looks like I'm going to have to beat the Orioles to have a shot at it. Also OOTP 23 will be announced next week it looks like. They are getting my $35 no doubt about it.1 point
