  1. Hear hear! Am I supposed to to accept that a gaming company might make a game I'm not interested in after I have put in the effort to post on their forums?! Never! That's not what the internet is for! I demand Obsidian to only make games that I like.

  2. Hi everyone! Today during the Inside Xbox Showcase during X019 we announced our brand new game, Grounded. A passion game being worked on by a small team hear at Obsidian. The world of Grounded is a vast, beautiful, and dangerous place, especially when you have been shrunken to the size of an ant. Explore, build, and survive together in this first person, multiplayer, survival-rpg. Can you thrive alongside the hordes of giant insects, fighting to endure the hardships of the backyard? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X4B5iOh1mB8 To help give you more information on Grounded, we wanted to share articles that have been written about a game from press who were able to come to the studio and see it prior to the unveiling at X0. This is a game that we're looking forward to building with your input when we come first to the Xbox Insider program and then later to Game Preview and Game Pass early next year. Now on to the articles! 4. Games are generally released in English with English VA, and translations into other languages are often bad or non-existent, so it's likely they'll sell more of a product if it's been locally produced and marketed. There's nothing special for the US market about a cRPG being made in the USA or an English-speaking country; while a Russian company making a game like that for the world market, and releasing it in decent Russian (even if they could only afford English VA - which I don't know), is more of a novelty for the locals.

  8. So, not going to lie, I had pretty high hopes for The Outer Worlds. Given who was involved in its development, I thought that it was going to be Arcanum/F: NV in space. Honestly, I still prefer Arcanum or F: NV to TOW. What had I hoped to see from those games that I didn't or felt like it wasn't delivered as well? Length and depth. With both F: NV and Arcanum, you can play them dozens of times, because there are so many quests and so many things to find/discover/uncover. It is impossible to do all that in a single playthrough. I am a completionist. I don't care what game I play, I try to milk it to its fullest potential, I want to squeeze absolutely everything out of it as I can. If I play it again, I will still try to get everything out of it that I can. Great RPGs in general, and F: NV and Arcanum in particular, have tons of juice to squeeze after a single playthrough. I have played both of those games MANY times (5+). I always found new things. I have beat TOW and honestly don't want to give it another playthrough, because I feel like it wouldn't be that much different. I obviously have a different experience by making different choices, but I feel like there is probably nothing that I missed (or, very, very little). I feel like there is not much more juice to squeeze. I briefly started a playthrough with a 2nd character, very different from my 1st, and could already see where it was going. I could imagine how the rest of the game would play out and it just didn't motivate me to keep playing. In terms of the sheer number of hours involved in playing either (being a completionist), TOW is nowhere near as long. Companions. To be fair, neither Arcanum or F: NV had great companions. Arcanum had companions who had interesting backstories and could have been really compelling, but they were almost free of banter, interaction, and reaction to the story. F: NV only let you have a single companion, effectively. Some of them were good and had a reasonable amount of development, but you still didn't get that deep character depth, development, and involvement. I was hoping that Obsidian would draw from their experiences making Tyranny and Deadfire, and we would end up with companions along the lines of Baldur's Gate 2 or the Mass Effect franchise - heck, Planescape Torment. I thought that we were going to get some seriously fleshed out, interesting companions who would develop over time and have fascinating backstories and really interesting banter and reactions/interactions with the story and player actions. The companions weren't complete trash... but honestly, I find absolutely nothing memorable about any of them. Anomen, the noble who has struggled to do well for his family name and honor Helm, who is arrogant but internally conflicted about his status and sometimes the actions of the Church of Helm. Viconia, who is jaded, distrustful and contemptuous, but can be convinced that life is valuable and that there is value in trying to help others. Aerie, who is wounded and hobbled by fear, with a heart of gold, who can be given confidence and learn to be strong. ME's Garrus, Miranda, Morgan, Grunt and the list could go on. Any of the Planescape Torment companions. All of these companions genuinely interested me and I was invested in them. Ellie, Vicar and Parvati were the only companions I could even stand in TOW (I liked SAM... but he had zero personality), and while I didn't dislike them, I also found them to be very vanilla and not at all interesting. Customization. This game doesn't even get close to F: NV or Arcanum in either respect. There are a billion character builds for either game. In both of them, I played Doc Holiday - physically weak, fragile, but very fast, great with handguns, super lucky, and a gambler. I literally got rich in both games gambling as my Doc Holiday character and would gun people down with my pistols if it became necessary. I played a sniper/scout, a brawler, a thief, a scientist and a talker in each game. No gambling in this game, so no Doc Holiday. Stealing is possible... but it is honestly pretty easy, in general (with pickpocketing being ridiculous). In my first playthrough, without trying very hard, I managed to be a scientist talker sniper thief. Didn't have great charisma, but could pass most dialogue checks with my intelligence or knowledge. Was pretty damn effective with "long rifles". Was super smart. This doesn't get into items. There were TONS of cool schematics in Arcanum, and it is impossible to master all the different tech branches in 1 playthrough. In F: NV, there are also tons of options for mods to weapons/armor, unique/special weapons/armor, and things of that nature. At the midpoint of TOW, I was literally already bored with the weapons and armor I had found, and it didn't really change from there. Bad guy. To me, Jon Irenicus remains the absolute best bad guy of any cRPG. He was interesting, believable, and actually scary. He was also slightly sympathetic and definitely understandable. His voice actor was incredible. Arcanum's bad guy was not nearly as interesting, but he was still good. Who you wanted to designate at the bad guy for F: NV depended entirely on your perception of who would do the best for the Mojave, or who you philosophically supported most, as an organization. TOW? As far as I can see, there is really only "1" bad guy... and he is pretty pathetic (and not really that bad, per se). He is hardly developed. You don't even know who he is until late in the game. Defeating him is... anticlimatic. Beating Jon Irenicus was HARD. Beating the bad guy in Arcanum was HARD. Beating the key bad guy in a cRPG should be really hard and you should feel invested in defeating them.... I just didn't feel that way with TOW. The universe in general. Both F: NV and Arcanum had some genuinely interesting NPCs. So did Planescape Torment, Mass Effect, and a number of great RPGs. Sidequests that were really interesting and compelling. I didn't feel this with TOW. There were a few here and there with a bit of development and backstory, but for the most part, the side quests were to go kill something or fetch something, and that was about it. The majority of the NPCs simply had no development or backstory. There might be more, but that is all I can think of right now. Honestly, though it took me 2 years to play it, I vastly prefer Tyranny to TOW. I prefer Deadfire to TOW. I had thought TOW actually had a chance of dethroning BG2 as my favorite cRPG... but I honestly don't think that I would put it in my top 10. Definitely not in my top 5. This isn't to say that TOW "sucks" or is a bad game. It is a good game. I would give it and 88 out of 100. But, I had hoped that it was going to be a 96/97/98/99.

  9. I think it's more that a lot of people, myself included, set the expectations for the reveal to be another RPG since that is almost exclusively what Obsidian's done before. I don't play survival games nor am I a fan of co-op in general (I tend not to have many friends who are into the same games as I, so it's always either a bit of a wasted feature for me or a struggle or barrier for enjoying a game specifically designed with it in mind), so the fact that it's also a kind of project I wouldn't get much out of regardless is a bit of a disappointment. Had it been something else, like a strategy game or a shooter or a metroidvania or an action/adventure game or whatever, I might have responded differently. Nevertheless, with it being a small project that seems to be worked on in parallel to other bigger and more traditionally "Obsidian" ventures, I certainly don't mind it.

  10. I finished Code Vein NG+ with the true ending. I found the Skull King battle a bit easier this time around, my glass cannon build did indeed pay off. I didn't outright kill him before he went into phase 3, but my damage output was high enough that I was able to finish him very quickly once he went into phase 3, so he never had a chance to really get going. The final battle of the game, The Virgin Born, I had significantly more trouble with than on the first run through the game, probably because of the glass cannon build. The odd thing about that battle is that it actually become easier IMHO once she (?) goes into phase 2. Phase 1 was the difficult phase for me, I obliterated her once I managed to survive into phase 2. I'm done with the game for now, 82 hours is enough, I guess. We'll see once the DLCs come out if they're worth picking up. The true ending definitely sets the game up for sequels. Whether it sold well enough that sequels will be made, that I don't know, but story-wise, the opening is certainly there.

  11. I've reached level 18 on Supernova, using a Companion build, and they rarely die, which is often a big complaint about the difficulty. I could probably grind through this, but I have to say even though the combat is going well, I coming close to dialing it back to hard. Simple reason: the sleeping thing. I can't sleep anywhere but my ship, and on Monarch this is starting to turn into a slog, walking back where I left off every time, even with the roads cleared of enemies. They really need to allow you to sleep in other beds, even if you have to pay a bunch of money to rent them.

  13. I’m on Xbox. Same crash every time, 4 times now. Make sure to save right after you’ve unsealed the door and you can try a variety of bypasses, after the 3-5 minutes reload. The only thing that worked for me was to send my companion back to the ship. Chairman Rockwell recognized me right away and initiated a dialogue, even though I still had the disguise on.

  14. Hi, I have seen this question all over the forums but no answer. I am no longer able to load any recent saves from the main menu on PS4. I have one manual save for the mission ”At Central” and one autosave for “Cupid of that Laboratory” but (Ver 1.00) just froze the main menu with the music still playing. The only save I could open and play is called “[System Save - Leaving Emerald Valley] at level 8, 20 hours prior to my most recent save. After updating to version 1.01 attempts to load the aforementioned saves would result in the following error E-B51D0002. Now after uninstalling the game and reinstalling leaving it at version 1.00 the saves will just be ignored and return to the main menu as if selecting them did nothing at all and when selecting the system save crashes the application. Updating to version 1.01 once again just gave me to same error. I’ve updated the PS4 software, shut down/ restarted the PS4 Several times and have deleted and installed the game three times. But the saves will still not load. Any help will be appreciated that you very much.

  19. Eastern Europe + Russia + Central Asia (so basically the extended former Soviet Union) is NOT a very limited market. I lived there for several years (as an expat). If I'm doing a rough estimation on the number of East Europeans+Central Asians who speak Russian at least as a second language I'll land at ~250 million. And they are nearly all emerging markets. Don't know how many of them could be considered potential customers but it's def. not a very limited market. Especially if you don't expect to sell millions of copies worldwide in the first place (like an AAA title would do). And it's not that you will only sell your product there. It's a bonus on top of your potential English speaking customers (in case of Owlcat games). One example: if you want to sell an English-only game in Uzbekistan you will have a hard time. If it's Russian your odds are way better. I'd also argue that a Russian developer is more likely to meet certain preferences of East European and Russian gamers. @thelee: And yes. American products sell especially well in America. It's not that obvious because the American market is enormous. Also American games, music an movies sell exceptionally well in Western Europe because of historical reasons. Rel. few Germans actually listen to German music compared to American music for example. I think with Russian developers and gamers there's also a portion of "pride" involved. I believe a lot of Russian gamers would buy a (solid) game simply because it was made in Russia (no judgement). Just think about it: if you are aiming at 500K copies worldwide and can add like 50 million more potential customers without the need for a costly localisation - isn't that an advantage? So all in all I still think the point is interesting and makes sense. Is it actually the case? I have no idea. But I wouldn't dismiss it.

I don't know if this was shared yet but I figured I should do so... https://venturebeat.com/2019/11/14/october-2019-npd-call-of-duty-and-outer-worlds-deliver-solid-month/ We already heard before from Take-Two conferences that the game was exceeding expectations, but to be second as a late-month release, and only behind Call of Duty, is really quite impressive. Nice to see the game being a success!

  22. It's not only games, though. A few years ago when OLED TVs were relatively new my father purchased one for around $4000. Its webOS was a buggy mess that took LG several months to fix. I bought myself a much cheaper Samsung TV that to this day exhibits some release-day bugs. Unless we're talking IOT devices, washing machines usually don't have the benefit of an online connection and a built-in updater. They also have much simpler software that's easier to get right the first time. On the other hand look at the automotive industry. As software becomes more sophisticated, bugs become more abundant. As someone on the Tesla owners forum wrote: "Unfortunately software bugs are a way of life for Tesla ownership right now". Unlike video games and TV operating systems, bugs in vehicles might potentially be life-threatening (e.g Tesla dog mode bug), yet they're still a reality in vehicles that cost thousands of dollaridoos. It's a sad reality we live in, but The Outer Worlds is a relatively bug-free game. I made it a habit of not buying games on release day. I usually wait a few weeks and let everyone else beta test the game for me. If it doesn't have any widespread bugs or performance issues that can't be resolved in any way other than an official patch, I'll happily buy it (which is why I haven't bought RDR2 PC as of yet). I already had a Game Pass subscription when the game released, and even then I waited for over a week for all the raving reviews to come out before I gave The Outer Worlds a go. I just hope this patch is going to fix Parvati for me so that I can continue playing.

  26. Once again: excessive speculation and deregulation leading to a housing market bubble is somehow the commies or the socialists or the lefties' fault, is what you're saying? Because... some socialist somewhere at some point said something about homes? Keep grasping at straws. Did I at any point say it wasn't a recommendation? The fact that it's "just" a recommendation and as close to a mandatory rule without actually being enforceable does not change that it's dealing with basic working conditions. Again: If it wasn't a recommendation and was instead a statute, Amazon workers wouldn't have to go on strike. They could just sue and we wouldn't be having this conversation. This is without losing sight of the fact that it's basic working conditions as regulated by law in places such as Germany: https://www.baua.de/DE/Angebote/Rechtstexte-und-Technische-Regeln/Regelwerk/ASR/pdf/ASR-A3-5.pdf?__blob=publicationFile and Spain: https://www.boe.es/buscar/act.php?id=BOE-A-1997-8669#aniii Next time maybe try looking past the first link Google gives you. Or, I don't know, maybe just read the link Google gives you and you're supposedly using to debunk a position. So now it's working "better"? Not harder, not smarter just... better? What does that even mean now? Sounds like more circular logic. Working better is what gives better results, so to get better results you must work "better"? It's 0 = 0. Meaningless. Useless. Barring gross incompetence or open sabotage, "work better = better results" is more of the same hot air you've been blowing for the last few pages. You even admitted it yourself, something something indefinite factors. Bribery, embezzlement, influence trafficking, all of those things tend to have direct results. "Better" work? Not so much, not always, not consistently. And this is because in a capitalist system, the proceeds from a worker's labor are appropriated by whoever owns the means of production, without obligatory proportional compensation. But we're not talking about grants by the EU to open businesses where I live. We're discussing your story of a magical land where black slaves could get a small loan of ten million dollars to start a mining co-op. Just admit that, like 95% of what you post, you literally made it up on the spot. And by the way, the EU does not directly lend money to prospective small business owners. They do it through, surprise, your local financial institutions (i.e. banks), who have the last word on whether to lend. And the largest amount you can get is 150k. A far cry from the ten million you claim is needed to get a coal mine started. Is playing fast and loose with numbers and facts part of the skillset needed to "work better"? How so? No regulation to get in the way of business. Supply and demand isn't artificially manipulated by the government. Anything you want you can buy it provided you have enough money. Taxes are not an issue if you grease the right palms. Sounds like a perfectly free market to me. It's only a lawless environment if you're a have-not. But if so, you should just "work better", right? Problem solved!

I know you dont have the resources to generate the kind of monthly content updates we get from Beth or Ubi or EA but your comms on this patch and future roadmap should be better . You should have planned for at least one update in the first two weeks to address crashes and quest blocking bugs We all want DLC as the base game is great but dont make it paid DLC under game pass - put your fans first

  31. Note guys, that after they showed this, either Sawyer or the other guy with him said (paraphrasing) "We're working on RPGs." The s after G being a key point, of course. Besides that though, I don't see much of a market for Grounded in any real capacity. I think that it's quite apparent, though, that with the X019 presentation around Wasteland 3, an isometric [tactical] RPG, with Microsoft's backing, Obsidian's marketing propensity has skyrocketed. Now, any isometric game that Obsidian makes should have a significant amount of potent marketing around it, an apparent problem with Deadfire.
    1 point
  32. I think that ultimately Pillars as a franchise is aimed at a very narrow niche and Deadfire just didn't appeal to enough of this already small market. It's an isometric D&D-like game that's nonetheless not actually D&D and thus doesn't have the familiarity or brand power. PoE 1 had this "whoa, it's just like Baldur's Gate" wonder factor that Deadfire couldn't replicate, both due to timing and moving away from it in terms of mechanics, story and setting. So its lack of success is just a messy bundle of timing and demand. We'd all like to find one big thing to point a finger at, but there isn't one.

  36. Someone only played the first location. There are other locations where no one is with the board. As has been mentioned, where is this game with real choice and consequence? Being pretty harsh if you are judging a game against some magical game that doesn't exist. Games are limited because they aren't real life. If you are comparing it to real life yes the graphics are bad, and the story is too linear... Good point
