Invision decided that it wasn't worth it to keep BBCode up to date and compatible with newer features. It wasn't an Obs decision -- the vendor just phased the feature out. edit: holy crap, ninja'd by half the forum slowpoke.jpeg3 points

Technically, in the forum guidelines there's a prohibition of "Posting frequent, annoying, and/or nonsensical posts", but I think that primarily aimed at stopping spamming in general rather than trying to enforce it against general discussions. I'd think the ideal would be, as much as possible, to use the multiquote function, though.3 points

I picked up Vagrus: Riven Realms on a whim. It is a pretty well-written survival death march type game with turn based combat. I guess it is like Sunless Sea and Battle Brothers combined. So far it is very engaging.3 points

well that happens when you get ambushed by your neighbor. I would not worry that much about Ukraine economy now. I am sure EU will pump money into it after war (well depends on how it ends)3 points

Finished episode 15 of Ergo Proxy... a few episodes of bizarre musings over existentialism and an episode, I suspect was an info dump of sorts. The Nightmare Quiz show. Without introduction, Vincent, Re-l and their diminutive sidekick, the cogito infected autoreiv "Pino" (which I suspect is some kind of reference to Pinocchio) are in the middle of a jeopardy show. If they win by scoring enough points, the quiz show host die, if they don't get enough points, the contestants die. Most of the questions are trivia type questions, but every now and then, a relevant question gets sneaked in, like how many Proxies exists and the correct answer is 300. In an exciting finale, Vincent just manages to beat the score before the time is out (and the quiz show host gets killed, after 20+ successful shows) It ends as abruptly as it began and next episode picks up where the story left them, currently stranded in the wasteland on their way to Mosk, as the wind has died down. For all their tech, their vessel is wind powered and the dead calm leaves the little group in the middle of nowhere. Probably my favourite episode so far, as it's almost like a text book examination of the psychology behind the group mechanics. Pino, the autoreiv is acting like her original programming, like a slightly unruly 8 year old girl, Re-l tries to figure out more about Vincent, which is now known to be a Proxy, even if he doesn't seem to be aware of it or remember it himself. She complains about leaving the toilet seat up is how he asserts his manliness and pushing him off their vessel and watching him fall results in a note in her book "Vincent is left handed" because of the way he braced for his fall. Probable the first time during the show so far I laughed out loud Oh yeah, Re-l insist that her 3 minutes of water rationing for hair washing is not good enough and she wants 2 minutes of Vincents, because he's got short hair and can wash his much faster The whole episode is just so well put together, how they get stressed and get on each others nerves. Some definitely more than others. In the end, the wind suddenly starts picking up again and they are on their way. There is definitely something fishy about this otherwise nice Vincent guy!.... Vincent in his Proxy form... Re-l's head is just about to explode, trying to work out the mysteries of what the Proxies are and why they exist Edit: Re-l was originally accompanied by "Iggy", her entourage (which is the term used for personal aide type autoreiv's as far as I could work out) when setting out searching for Vincents trail in the wasteland. But he was infected and developed personality disorders, like both having a crush on his master and wanting to dispose of her. He ended up in... a non functional state.3 points

The forum software updated, and the software got rid of it with the update. It happened to a pile of different places that were using Invision all at once. Well, there was a transition period where you could switch to BBCode mode for a bit, but then it was just...gone with another update. What I do these days is always highlight a part of a person's post, like this, and it just goes wherever your cursor currently is in the box. Using the actual quote button is the path to madness: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/s/onlwdqqg7j7mlmd/firefox_XAYVSnPJW3.mp4 (e): Ninja-ed by Amenpoop, .2 points

I use the multiquote function as much as I can, but replying to a specific part of a multiquote post is a bother because of the tendency of quote boxes to go *poof* or otherwise disrupt format. And nesting quote boxes is an ability some consider to be unnatural... Man, I miss BBCode.2 points

You know, it kind of bugs me that people don't know what that pocket is (when proctoring I've had to tell people to run their finger through their watch pocket and have them stare at me as if I'd just begun gibbering). And I'm not all that up on the names of clothes and parts of clothes. Now I feel like I need to yell at some clouds or something. EDIT: I also hate when you don't quote a post that will be right above yours, but a page break puts your reply on another page so you have to go back and edit your post so that you preserve the context2 points

Well. I am sorry to upset anyone, but lately being not very active here, I am trying to answer all the questions/posts as soon, as I found any interesting ones. And sometimes these questions are spanned over few pages. (Yes, you are correct, not the case this time). Also for some reason when I tried to use multiquote few times in the past, it failed on me few times before. So I am more clumsy than lazy, while trying to answer multiple of people at once2 points

The Elden Ring open world is pretty much just the usual souls game world, but every room is scaled up x10. As I've just recently played Bloodborne again, the similarities are extreme to me. You leave one room (walk through a tunnel) in Bloodborne and enter the next, now the scenery changed and it feels like a completely different place --- it's exactly the same in Elden Ring, just bigger. Because it's bigger, they gave you a horse to travel faster. This is also the point where I have some issues with it... because technically the bigger world really wasn't necessary. That said, I'm not hating on the world building. As usual they did a fantastic job with the vistas and panorama locations. I'm just questioning if it was really necessary to make everything big. Especially since now combat balance goes haywire even faster than before... first it's way too hard, then it gets way too easy, and then everything kills you in 1 hit unless you pump vitality > 45 at least.2 points

so, to toss my two cents into the Elden Ring discussion pit, it's the game of the decade for me and the best RPG since Persona 5. someone here compared it to Conan Exiles, it actually feels very similar in terms of how the world is designed, although technically ER is vastly superior. it also reminds me of Final Fantasy for some reason. I've been told by the people that own a Switch, that ER is basically a Zelda game, but I'll have to take their word for it. and just to clarify, the only two games from this company I played in the past were Bloodborne and Sekiro, and I hated both. Bloodborne due to terrible controls, Sekiro due to terrible vertical level design. Elden Ring on PC fixes most of these issues for me (although, the combat in Sekiro is superior in my opinion, would love to have that as an option in ER). anyway, I won't write a review or anything (I have a lot to say, but I'll keep it to myself), I'll just address a few issues other obsidianites brought up recently. namely, GRRM's involvement and the whole plot thing, combat, the open world and role-playing aspects. not sure how many of you have read ancient literature (Norse sagas, Greek myths etc.), but one of the things that makes GRRM's writing stand out is how he emulates story beats and styles that are often encountered in those early examples of storytelling. and you can see a lot of that in ER. I won't spoil anything here, but the influence is very noticeable, it gives the game this incredible atmosphere. I did catch myself many times feeling like I was actually experiencing a fairy tale. love the quest design, easily the best approach to doing quests in an open world game IMO. you get to an NPC and talk to him, he/she drops a hint on what you should do next, and that's it. on the one hand it makes quests easily missed, on the other, you aren't required to complete any of them, so when you do stumble across a quest resolution if feels very rewarding. some of the quests are incredibly story-rich and all of them have tragic resolutions. everything else in the game's story is traditional FromSoft stuff with the elder gods and demi-gods doing their thing far as I can tell, not interested in any of that personally. but that's just fluff that never interested me in games. combat on its base level is mediocre due to how heavily enemy design relies on the player evading attacks and not blocking. even though parrying and countering are a thing, they're very situational, while evading is universal across all enemy types. personally I think it should be the other way around (like in Sekiro, where the emphasis is on parrying and countering), but I can make parry/counter work with certain builds, so at least it's an option if you're willing to invest the time into making it work. as for the open world, again, it's some of the best design I've seen. games like the Witcher 3 or Skyrim don't even come close (even though they're clear influences, as well as Assassin's Creed, I'm sure). the variety of environments, the attention to detail, the hundred different enemy types representing warring factions and poor creatures stuck between them - all of that makes the game world a joy to just traverse and take in the sights. as for the role-playing part, I love that the game has at least three secret endings and another three unlockable variations of the base ending, all of which require you to jump through hoops to reach but all of which are optional and skippable entirely. I really enjoy building up my character and trying different approaches with bosses I can't beat. for example, I was having trouble with one particular boss (the first Crucible Knight you meet in Limgrave) and just couldn't get through no matter how much I tried spamming skills. I then tried parrying and just couldn't get a hang of it, but then I found an ash of war that added a special kind of parry to a shield of my choice, and that was the winning recipe for me. I like how crafting isn't forced down my throat and can be ignored completely. I like how intuitive the stats scaling is. unlike some other games I didn't need to go through millions of guides to figure out how to build my character. the equipment screen makes it self-evident. anyway, I'll just stop here before this turns into a wall of text. one downside is the UI of course, it's borderline unusable but can be customized somewhat which makes it bearable.2 points

another example o' the funny way Gromnir's brain works. were a bit o' questionable history regarding abraham lincoln in another thread, and am embarrassed to admit an electric six song got stuck in our head after we did an obligatory eye-roll. warning: the song is not explicit offensive, but am recognizing the vid and lyrics might be deemed inappropriate by the powers that be. HA! Good Fun!1 point

may come as a surprise (or not) that numerous historic figures were killed on the toilet or in the privy... though a couple instances might be apocryphal. wenceslaus iii, edmund ironside, eglon, and uesugi kenshin come to mind, but may be others. and not exact same thing, but... god/the universe being the most lethal o' all assassins, and clear the one with the most sadistic sense o' humor. Those are rookie numbers. Oh and let me give this recommendation again. Give Redline a go for anyone who hasn't watched it. Making a gif for majestic reminded me of it and now I want to rewatch it but it's too late.1 point

Please, for the love of all that's good and right in the world, stop it. The only thing that's worse than Mari is Mari with what looks like heavily oversaturated and hyperbright colors. Yikes, I feel like that image directly penetrated my eyes and singed my brain. Feels like Words Bubble Up Like Soda Pop, except... worse.1 point

Neither have I, but I think not. I'd just install it, play for a bit and then quietly drop it and hope my brain won't force me to go back. Essentially the same thing that happened with Breath of the Wild.1 point

I'm Spanish. Used to be a lot of carryover crap from back when the military establishment was the main source of the regime's political power in the country, and it took a long while to really modernize and grow out of it. We've come a long way in the last ~25 years and the worst is now in the past, but it's not completely fixed. Senior officers are still mostly untouchable.1 point

How about Forbidden Fiat/trickster? You have flagellans path, escape etc. And that build is sturdy enough to tank a little bit with good defenses. or maybe sc monk and use all the fun abilities (skyward kick, raised torment, launching kick) and finally whispers of the wind?1 point

Yeah this one does not translate well outside the US. Actually is doesn't really translate well IN the US except in the south & midwest. Both are places you go after the bars all close to eat that weird drunk meal at 3 AM while trying to sober up enough to find your way home.1 point

Hard West had a lot of good ideas but it was very rough around the edges. Phantom Doctrine was waaaaay more polished and a much better game. I enjoyed it quite a bit. My biggest criticism is that once I figured a couple of strategies out, it became too easy. At that point, completing levels became trivial, it was all about meeting challenges I imposed on myself.1 point

Oh wow, I didn't know co-op was even on the menu for Solasta. I don't know how fun controlling two characters each will be but definitely giving it a shot given it's on Game Pass. I get that co-op is an afterthought to many players, but for something like this, it turns a game I would never touch (given my long-standing position about party-based RPGs) into a must-try. (Meanwhile, Bloodstained still doesn't have it's co-op update, sheesh)1 point

Is here anyone who might be interested in Far Cry 6 and Resident Evil Village? It is probably on Epic... I got it as a gift to my AMD GPU, but I am not interested in these typo of games. The code should be redeemable at AMD until the end of this month (march 2022 ). Long time members of Obsidian community will get preferential treatment.1 point

I did not at first but am having stuttering problems now for some reason. I found a killer farming location and am now leveled pretty high and already beat two of the main bosses in the game. I think there's like 5 or 6. Love this game quite a lot and the fact that it has been released at this particular time period is a great incentive to play it to keep your mind off of other matters. I started off as a Samurai and found a killer katana that adds magic damage and ran into the first four types of sombering smith stones so I got lucky that my particular discoveries have netted me quite the buffing. Many will probably disagree but I think this is better than anything CD Projekt Red has to offer, Witcher 3 for instance is too fast paced and the plot is too soap opera for my liking, whilst everything in ER is more nuanced, relaxed, tougher, and more leisurely.1 point

Currently busy playing Guild Wars 2: End of Dragons... the Asian inspired expansion. Being no expert, I couldn't tell what culture it leans most heavily on. Could be Korean, could be Chinese, could be Khmer, could be a hybrid... Welcome to New Kaineng The game has it's own stylistic art direction. A bit like watercolours The city is "tall", with the nobility and who's who living in the upper layers and the rabble and gangs living on the ground levels Old Kaineng, which (like the city of Lions Arch) was destroyed in the tsunami created by Zhaitan when it raised the nation of Orr from the sea botton Welcome to the new player "home" while in Cantha, the ruins of Arborstone, being the new base of operations1 point

I was a bit concerned that the Elden Ring open world would not engage me. Breath of the Wild was also a bit too barren for my tastes. I like to have some cities and people in my worlds. I almost gave up on Conan Exiles early because of this too. In Conan, almost everyone is trying to kill you, so even though there are communities all over the map, they aren't welcoming. But then I got my head around the fact that a sharp rap over the head and a bit of time on the wheel of pain can make anyone a friendly npc.1 point
