  1. THE THUNDERCAT 2.0 Class: Lifegiver / Blood Mage Concept: Fast, sturdy and fun Caster/Melee hybrid that relies upon strong synergies between classes to keep spiritshift, buffs and healing up forever, unleashing devastating combos of CC/Damage spells before optionally finishing up foes with claws. Optimized for a No-Rest run. Game Version: RTwP. Works with latest updates and DLCs as of v5.0.00040. I recommend the Full Community Patch and the No Forced Rests mod (otherwise just metagame around them, it’s fully viable but just a bit annoying). Upscaled PotD Solo Viable: Yes. Companion: Nope (meant to play solo by definition, no companion can use this template). As always, this is going to be a somewhat long post so please bear with me. I’ll explain briefly why I think this toon is interesting and illustrate how it comes together with a short video, then go over the key stats, equipment and abilities. -----INTRO------ The Thundercat is a beloved PoE1 Druid build by @L4wlight (I definitely won’t take credit for the original idea!). The idea: a very fast-paced and explosive Druid that loves lightning, using the Cat form for extra speed, being able to dish out lots of damage via spells and melee, inflict a lot of debuffs/CC and even healing and moderate buffing. My goal was to adapt the core idea to Deadfire minus the Britney vibe and to make it viable for Solo PotD. Multiclassing with a Blood Mage became quite obvious because of certain synergies: Lifegiver in Cat form has amazing action speed, stellar healing over time and some really cool offensive spells, but it can’t keep those up forever, its defenses aren’t great and it runs out of resources fast. Blood Mage uses healing as a resource to replenish spells at will, it can prolong beneficial effects forever with Wall of Draining (including Cat form, Flurry, Healing over Time…) and it has some of the strongest buffing, defensive and offensive spells in the game. Yay, the sweet smell of synergy! So far I totally realize that I’m not saying anything fundamentally new, so I’ll go in a bit more detail on each of the cornerstones of the build to explain why this toon has a special place in my little . Speed: This is a key enabler of this build’s playstyle. Action Speed has linear returns (thanks @thelee and others for the patient demonstrations) but with enough investment and the right build, I find that it can also somewhat alter your action economy and enable new combos, which is what Thundercat 2.0 is all about. It will all become clearer in a few paragraphs but at this point I’ll just mention that at the top of his game, this build reduces total action cycle time (Action + Recovery) by -55%. So a spell that would take 7.5s with a neutral-speed toon (4.5s + 3s) takes 3.4s (2s + 1.4s). Claws attacks have a total cycle time of 1.3s (0.2 + 1.1s)... How do we reach this speed? Cat Form has zero armor recovery, Cat Flurry is a huge speed buff, Captain Banquet stacks if you save/reload, we have lots of DEX, Fleet Feet, plus rapid casting and 2 weapons-style. Healing: Another key enabler for survivability and fuel for Blood Sacrifice. In Cat Form, we have lots of PL boost to Rejuvenation and we can stack outstanding HoT: Moonwell, Nature’s Balm, The Moon’s Light, the occasional Garden of Life… Not all of those HoTs get prolonged by Wall of Draining but Nature’s Balm and The Moon’s Light do (for Moonwell, only the +All Def bonus is prolonged). You also get some bonus from Dawnstar’s Blessing, Practiced Healer, Footprints of Ahu Taka, a bit of MIG). Net net, you can stack a consistent healing of ~60 health/3 sec, and easily spike over 100 health/3sec. Defense: The Thundercat 2.0 is no Arcane Knight, but he can still hold his ground. We stack bonuses with passives, accessories and buffs, in particular there is something nice with Captain Furrante’s breastplate “First to the Fight” effect not being removed by Spiritshift and extendable via WoD. (Doesn’t work with weapon effects like Sheltering Light and Drawing Parry). We can get REF and WIL over 200, FOR and DEF over 170 (non-veil piercing attacks). We have immunities or resistance to most problematic hard CC effects. Our AR is routinely at 17. We’re immune to Interrupt. Nothing stellar overall and we will get hit by high level foes, but we can take it, especially because we have other layers of active protection… Crowd Control/Debuff I think that the Thundercat 2.0 may be one of the best debuffers in the game. We can drastically reduce every single enemy offensive and defensive stat. Every stat. And easily inflict soft and hard CC. We have Afflictions across all stats, several Tier 3+ as well as Tier 1 & 2 with decent duration that are mostly attached to damaging spells in large pulsing AoE. And we can chain-cast those nasty effects very fast, potentially reducing literally everything on one sorry group of enemies. This enables to play very strategically on enemies weaknesses, or just to go bonkers throwing spells around that are randomly going to synergize with one another. Damage This is where I got really impressed. We have literally tons of casts of pulsing/ticking and DoT spells and we have 2 awesome force multipliers: Combusting Wounds and Infestation of Maggots. We also have a decent accuracy with most spells being around ~120 ACC and all those debuffs attached to help them land better. We also have a lot of INT so hazard areas and DoTs will last longer. If you combine all this with super-fast spell casting, you can very quickly get a snowballing, layering effect that overwhelms the enemy, creating an exponential stream of DMG that will leave all but the sturdiest of opponents standing. And when you’ve thinned the herd and supercharged your spiritshift duration, you can just go nuts in melee with one-second Greater Wildstrike Shock auto-attacks. Because you can’t swap grimoires when spiritshifted, unfortunately it is hard to use Zandethu’s Draconic Fury but hey, we can’t have everything all the time! Bringing everything together: Here is a small video that I recorded of the Sea-Lashed Crypt entrance fight where I am using all the mechanics described above. I know it is not a very hard fight by any means, the goal is just to show the different mechanics of the build easily, with a decent variety of enemies, some tanky enough to be able to show the snowballing damage effect. -----SPECS------ Race: Wood Elf (DEX Affliction resistance and +PER) Background: The White that Wends – Explorer FINAL STATS WITH ALL PERMABUFFS AND NO-REST BUFFS AS OF 5.0 (without combat buffs): MIG 13 (8 Base +2 Berath +1 Gift from Machine +2 Alchemic Brawn) CON 17 (8 Base +2 Berath +2 Alchemic Brawn +2 Konstanten Boon +3 Girdle of Eoten CON) DEX 24 (15 Base +1 Elf +2 Berath +2 Alchemic Guile +2 Amira’s Blessing +2 Footprints Ahu Taka) PER 28 (18 Base +1 Elf +1 White that Wends +2 Berath +1 Konstanten Boon +1 Effigy: Sagani +2 Alchemic Guile +1 Savage Cunning +1 Cauldron Brew) INT 25 (18 Base +2 Berath +1 Konstanten Boon +2 Alchemic Wits +2 Charm of Bones) RES 18 (8 Base +2 Berath +2 Alchemic Wits +2 Nature’s Resolve +2 Rikuhu’s Blessing +2 Eviee Pet) ADDITIONAL PERMABUFFS: Food: Captain’s Banquet Adratic Glow All Trainings Dawnstar Blessing Luminous Adra Potion Nature’s Resolve (Accuracy) Savage Cunning (Survival) Galawain’s Gift Magran’s Blessing Infamous Captain, Bonus Skills, Champion Stats, Port Maje vendor, Fully discovered Map, Bonus Money… invested all 105 Berath’s Blessing Points SKILLS: History at 20, Mechanics at 13, rest in Athletics and Survival. Another strong Blood Mage + X to solo the game, and one of few Druid options that can solo as far as I know. Always happy to read your thoughts and potential for improvement or tweaking. I'm sure it can be steered in other directions, in particular for party play.

  4. When I was a lot younger I had naturally wavy hair with very long curls that was well over a foot beyond shoulder length (kind of like Jason Momoa, just with a scrawny, MUCH less buff frame ). Then came military service, and it never grew back the way it was, and the curls are almost completely gone. Such a waste. edit: Will be getting my first shot of Moderna next week.

  5. I had the most incredible and beautiful experience this morning on my walk, their was low cloud when I started at 7 am and it was dark and gloomy. I live in the city in the shadow of Table Mountain and the area is very much impacted by clouds and erratic weather patterns that I have never experienced before living in SA Anyway I always walk uphill to the bottom of Table Mountain and then come back and this morning my walk took me through the cloud cover and their was sun and I had this amazing view of the whole of Cpt city covered by this lake of clouds. I dont take my phone with me but the photos below basically are the same sight I get to see everyday. The first photo is what I would normally see and the second is what I witnessed today

  7. I think I will go for the Trickster/Helwalker, max resolve and perception. My idea is a good critical build but at the same time is hard to be hit. The other idea is a Streetfighter/Wizard, but I don’t know if the mage defensive buffs worth the trade and if the rest of the build will fit this idea.

  8. SC streetfighter or streetfighter/monk works best with dual blunderbusses because you can trigger the bonus easily with Powder Burns while being safe. With dual mortars you can apply AoE bleeds/afflictions, while dual blundebusses with Gambit and the ring of Clenched Muscle are nice for single target dps. For melee streetfighters you need a priest with BDD in the party or else it's too hard to trigger the bonuses.

  9. It is the king of ending fights before they begin, if you're into this kind of gameplay. Max MIG/PER/INT/DEX, dump CON/RES. Hoard +PL items for Fire/Freeze spells and items that boost ACC, DMG, Crit DMG. Start fight with a Delayed Fireball and maybe toss another one on top, continue with Shadowflames when combat start. Maybe Smoke Veil, get close to survivors and finish them with Precisely Piercing Burst from invisibility. Rince and repeat. It is extremely powerful. But depending on your beliefs regarding honor and combat, you might be bringing shame upon your dojo .

  10. Personally I'd go Bloodmage. Loosing Conjuration is painful. Also, shocking oneself with Chain Lightning while wearing Deltro's Cage helmet is the single largest damage multiplier... and when you do that you DON'T want the Chain Lightning spell to be duplicated (like what Evoker special can do).

  11. I like Vanishing Strikes, but imo Gambit with 100% crit conversion is better suited for party setup. Pure "Assassin stuff" where you backstab and assassinate from stealth and invisibility often requires too much work and attention to be effective for me in a party. It profits a lot from good setup and stealthy gameplay and is more "tactical" - which often leads to a situation where you park your party somewhere and do invisible stuff with the Assassin alone because the other party members will only mess things up. At least that's my experience when I don't use the Assassin with a caster combo but as "original" roguish weapon hitter. I remember my finished playthrough with an Assassin/Priest of Skaen: at some point it accidentally turned into a 95% solo run. Streetfighter with Gambit can just run along with the others since it's not really complicated. Solo it can be great, too - especially once you also include weapons with on-crit effects like Rust's Poignard, Ball and Chain and such. Even bosses like Dragons and the Beast of Winter will be perma-prone and you can uphold this way longer than Vanishing Strikes because of the almost guaranteed refund. But I like it better with a party because it makes it much easier to debuff enemies' defenses so you can't really graze or miss. As I said I really like Vanishing Strikes and the whole invisibility shebang - but it requires some "special" gameplay to be fun in my case. I mean you can also combine both and do Gambit while invisible from Vanishing Strikes of course as an Assassin (for a Streetfighter that doesn't make a lot of sense bc. he'll lose the flanking - unless he's bloodied). But the use of Vanishing Strikes already takes you under 100% conversion if you didn't get up to a lot of max Guile. One has to say that a Rogue with Gambit turns into a total One-Trick Pony. You can retrain then and only pick passives + Gambit - because you won't use your Guile for anything else anymore except maybe Gouging Strike and Smoke Veil in some special cases. Edit: ninja'd by Kaylon.

  12. IMO dual rapiers with modal are fine if you like that. Rapiers have fast attack speed, even with modal they are only marginally slower then "normal" speed weapons - and for me dual normal speed weapons are plenty fast enough. I agree with not taking the Streetfighter/Berserker. Been there and indeed the damage is sick. BUT my char did keep dieing all the time.... NOT fun. I'd however still consider a multiclass with a monk. Simply because how insane "free" hit chains from Swift Flurry/Heartbeat Drumming are with a high crit rate. Sometimes getting like 10 hits instead of 1... Maybe only vs enemies easy to crit... but it was a rather large group for me, I've found. And you can debuff enemies quite a bit (reason I've liked Confounding Blind - although with a fix mod). Particularly on a monk Scordeo's Edge saber is very good, as it can stack a lot of Accuracy bonuses also (up to +20 AFAIR) and when Blade Cascade triggers, things get insane (and it triggers much more often when you make a lot of hit rolls with SF/HBD chains). Its nice to immediately cast Salvation of Time with a Priest then...

  14. Fast attacks and lots of crits sounds like a Berserker/Streetfighter with dual daggers. Or at least anything else with Streetfigher, not necessarily Trickster. Played one with Marux Amanth + Pukestabber and all the speed goodies (Alkohol, Devil of Caroc + Abraham, Two Weapon Style, Frenzy, Bloodlust, Heating Up, Blackblade's Hood and so on) and all the dmg goodies (One Sands Alone, Blooded, Barbaric Smash, Bloody Slaughter, Sneak Attack, Deathblows, Blood Storm, Deep Wounds etc.). It's incredibly fast once you get flanked and has very high crit damage bonuses with Barbaric Smash, especially against near death enemies and when bloodied. You need to watch out for the seld damage though. The AR is quite good but you still are vulnerable when flanked. DoC Breastplate can be used to heal you on crit and you can wear Voidward & Ring of Greater Regeneration + use Stalwrd Defiance, but still good to wathc him closely. Monk/Streetfighter is also nice. Devoted/Streetfigher is sturdier while still great offensively. "Classic" rogue like that would be a single class Streetfighter, no? Gambit with DoC Breastplate and the right tavern bonus can bring you over 10 Guile rel. early. That means 100% hit to crit with Gambit which lets you spam it nonstop (until you roll a miss or graze, then you'll lose Guile). Also the dmg of Gambit raises with high Guile and leads to great numbers.

  21. Hmm, not sold on such a combination. Streetfighter / Devoted is strong, particularly once he gets Unbending and can charge headfirst into the fray (and safely get Flanked). But Assasin's strenght lies in avoiding being the enemy target and launching few but powerful attacks - rather then sustained engagement. I would like to suggest another fighter subclass then: Blackjacket who carries 4 different weapon sets and uses powerful weapon encounter abilities from stealth, with the Assassinate bonus (such as Thunderous Report from Kitchen Stove, Run Trough from Whispers and others).

  22. For the next version of the patch, I'm planning to rework a bit Unbending (Unless CP does it first, since I know they planned to do it anyway ; CP has priority over this kind of stuff) so it provides a fixed % of damages received, most likely only buffed by Healing Received bonuses. Currently Unbending has an easy time healing for about 150% damages due to incoming attacks triggering additional ticks (and Unbending Trunk feels redundant). I'm aiming for 40% for Unbending/Shield and 60% for Unbending Trunk (so 60%/90% with Mercy Chant). I have to check how it works exactly. As a consequence, I felt that Fighters could get a buff. MC Fighters will be fine anyway so I'm mostly concerned about SC. Toughened Fury has a really weird design. Receiving Crit is not the way of a class with such high defenses. So instead of 25% +1 discipline on Crit, I plan to go with 10% +1 discipline on damaged. EDIT : I will tune it down to 8% +1 discipline on damaged. 10% feels a bit too strong. Critical Defenses had a poor synergy with it. Even with the change above, I plan to adjust it to 50% Crit to Hit. Why ? To give SC fighter a distinct edge for defense. Crit resistance is critical with high AR cause Crit PEN bonuses basically make them ignore AR. This passive will probably be "above the curve" but I think it's nice for a class to have a few ability above the curve. This has to be limited to SC though. These are the main "generalist" buff, but I also think SC fighter needs a buff to their Tanking features. Take the Hit is meh. Even with my change which makes it almost instant, I fear that spending ressources just to redirect damages isn't going to be good, especially for a Tier 9. Therefore I plan to make it free. You won't use it every time but it will be there when you need to protect your allies. Unrelentless could be buffed to +5 discipline. Yes, this is huge but the ability is Tier 9 and situational (you'll need to get a wound to get back ressources). The 2 latest changes would work well together to make SC Unbroken nice to play. With these changes, I hope fighters could be the enduring tanks they are meant to be. But tell me if something feels really broken. Edit : also since I have already made many changes and points for tiers 8-9 abilities are limited, picking high tier abilities will require even more careful choices (toughened Fury will probably stay a must pick though). And I think this is good !

  23. Here are some ways to make muiltiple playthroughs interesting: 1) Create a unique MC, using a thematic build, and build your party around the MC. Try to use different companions each time, and choose new classes for them if you'd like. For example, I am trying Serafen as an SC Barb this time. 2) Avoid the DLCs, unless you really like them. I find the DLCs a bit grindy, although they offer some good items. The real theme of this game is wandering islands, having short encounters, and moving onto the next island. I feel like the DLCs move back toward the direction of POE 1 with long dungeons. 3) Megabosses are fun, but not worth it if you find it tedious or boring. Once you have beaten them without cheese many times, you can use Gouging Strike nad Lover's True kiss , turn up game speed, and kill several of them a) this works for Dorudugan, The Spider, and the Wizard megabosses I think. For the blob, you can just use Marux amanth's insta kill skill. Boost your accuracy , and dual wield it for 2 chances. 3) Choose different paths for quests, and really roleplay. This makes it more fun 4) Take breaks between Playthroughs. I take a few weeks or months between playthroughs, and do some other genres of games i like (Natural Selection 2, Left for Dead 2) then come back to RPGS. Or , go play Skyrim for a while then return with a fresh perspective! 5) Read these Forums for excellent ideas on builds and items!

  25. Insurrection (noun): a violent uprising against an authority or government. It more or less fits the definition, but then technically so do many anti-government riots. The 14th amendment, section 3, is specifically for those seeking government office. Thus it applies to the last President.

  26. That was not an insurrection. It was a mob. A riot. In December 1860, South Carolina seceded from the United States. Four months later it told it’s militia to fire on Fort Sumter. That was an insurrection. Those idiots thought they were doing some kind of a “protest“. They had no idea of going in there and overthrowing the government taking over the country. That’s what it insurrection is. Calling what happened an insurrection is deliberately mischaracterizing it for political purposes. What actually happened was already pretty freaking terrible. It’s both cynical and dishonest to make it sound worse.

  29. Sounds good! Just remember to equip heavy armor before ship battles and maybe a few other tough encounters. Streetfighter doesn't do anything for your casting ability (other then reduced Recovery when Blooded, I guess), so I'd only use that combo if I to mostly ignore casting (except a few buffs) and wanted to melee only. Then again, in such a case, I'd prefer other multiclasses, I think (fighter, paladin or even cipher, monk, barbarian).

  32. I don't. That would be the same as usual (in fantasy CRPGs) and feels a bit like an appeal to everybody's secret delusions of grandeur. That was cool when it happened with Ultima IX or Throne of Bhaal or something back then. I was much younger and liked that "I'm so special" treatment. But I don't read the kinds of books nowadays that I read back then. I don't watch the same kinds of movies anymore. I grew old. I actually found it kind of refreshing to have a somewhat surprising yet anticlimactic ending and not the typical "you're important and you get it all" stuff. I mean if it would have been one of many possible outcomes: fine with me. But as the most probable "default" ending? Nah... I suspect Josh Sawyer (who is about my age) felt the same and that's why we have that unusual ending. Maybe it's just not satisfying for younger audiences in general - or audiences who still feel young and/or like nostalgia and being reminded of games they played a long time ago - no idea. But on the other hand: the ending is a massive cliffhanger. PoE3 could easily lead to an outcome that you hoped for. One can see that it's just an opener for a thick metaphysical and political plot for another sequel. Unfortunately Deadfire sold so poorly at release and in the first year that a PoE3 was off the table for the longest time. But yesterday I learned from Josh (on Twitter) that Deadfire makes a profit since last year (and continues to do so - it's on sale with a bundle currently, 75% off). So maybe... maybe you might get your "ascension" to godhood, who knows?

  33. Firstly, ANC actually received extensive training from Libya and the IRA. Being 'terrorists' doesn't stop you also being freedom fighters, you're just way more likely get labelled as terrorist if you're going against the interests of the group doing the labeling. In the ANC's case that was its association with the SACP, with western powers still tacitly supporting South Africa because it was a bulwark against communism. Secondly, Hamas didn't even exist in the 70s. It was established- with support by Israel- as a counter to the PLO, in the late 80s. They could theoretically have supported the ANC for... maybe a year. Thirdly, that's irrelevant to South Africa or the ANC. Israel and apartheid era RSA literally had military agreements and sanction busting military supply- including, allegedly, a nuke for uranium swap- so thinking that they'd just decide to swap sides to the one selling their oppressors the guns used to oppress them is laughable. Tough noogies for Israel, might have been different if they'd been on the right side of history instead of propping up white supremacists. Finally, it's still no surprise that the ANC hates all the apartheid like things Israel does, and there are a multitude of reasons for them supporting the Palestinians- and splitter groups like the EFF* are only more radical, not less. Any expectation that they'd support Israel against its version of the ANC is laughable. *not the US group supporting internet freedom

  39. Running is strange. As a runner, I feel like over the course of any month I spend two weeks feeling out of shape, 2 weeks feeling injured, and a few days feeling amazing and fast. But those few days are really good! My wife and I spent the weekend in San Francisco for our 18th anniversary. I had the best spaghetti and meatballs ever in North Beach. Sunday morning I woke up and ran to the Golden Gate Bridge, and it was beautiful. There were a ton of people out running, cycling, and swimming in the bay. I came into running pretty late. I didn't start until I was about 35. In High School, it was all hockey, and if I wanted to get some cardio, I would grab roller blades and skate. Rollerblading was such a big deal in the 90's! It is odd how completely that died out. When I reached 35, I was slowing down and had a fair amount of extra beer weight, so I needed something to get moving again. My kids were no longer a good excuse to be out of shape, because they were old enough to survive for a little bit of time on their own. I bought a cheap pair of running shoes and started doing a mile a day. Within the first year, a good chunk of the weight had fallen off, and I started feeling like I was getting faster. By the time I hit 40 I felt way better than I had at 30. We will see how I feel when I hit 50.

  40. I concur above @thelee, the first island, and much of the early game can be very challenging. Avoid ship fights until you have a full party, decent armor, and enough AOE to survive. Overall, what has helped me in POTD is really studying the skills I use and the defenses they attack. For example, A lot of wizard spells attack reflex, but before I can really land them, I need to debuff mobs' reflex stat (which can be done in a variety of ways). Studying the combat log , looking at damage rolls, penetration, and accuracy are very important. For instance, while sword and large shield can be good for defensive, it has very low accuarcy, which means your tank will not land many hits, thus prolonging fights. Steam has some good POTD guides, especially by Lost Sinner. I would check those out.

  41. yeah, don't be afraid to hire companions on the first island. i think you have to more aggressively care about how you order your quests you do on potd. even if a quest doesn't have any skulls for you, they can still be extremely hard (for example family pride and hanging sepulchers can be extremely brutal for a non-unoptimized party even at target level). don't be afraid to back away and regroup. (family pride in fact i keep several saves in case i get stuck inside one of the houses in an impossible-to-win fight.)

  42. What do you think about this: BDD purges itself when triggered or is one-use per cast effect. Then creates barier (like Her Courage - which is actually temporary HP) for x+y*PL points for z sec, to protect character from instant death by next dmg. One still needs to react (heal or reposition), before barier will break or expire. This way one can extend BDD effect, but it's still disposable. Shield effect could be extended too, but it doesn't give immortality due to finite barier points.
