OK, funny story about something @Gromnir said about the police being your best friend when your car is broken down. I believe it was 1998. '97, something like that. I was working in my own business (electronic and mechanical test equipment calibration and service) and going to school at Broward Community College in the mornings. I had just worked the entire night at Florida RF Labs up in Stuart and was on my way to BCC in Davie for a class. Going down I-95 one of my radiator hoses burst. So I pulled over and it took two seconds to realize what was up. I didn't have a cell phone then, just a pager. Anyway there was a Discount Auto Parts store less than a mile away in Pompano so I climbed down the berm, over the fence and walked about four blocks. Less than an hour later I'm walking back with a new hose and a bottle of antifreeze. When I got back to my truck a FHP car (Florida highway Patrol) was behind it with the lights on. I walked up, waved to the trooper, popped the hood, got some tools from my test kit, and got to work. The Trooper walks over to me and right away he's being a d--k. "This your truck"? It strikes me as an exceedingly stupid question that begs a sarcastic riposte, but I figured I needed this guy on my side. "Yes sir" I reply and give him my license and registration. He looks at it for a moment and asked if I needed him to call a tow truck. "No sir, give me time to replace this radiator hose and I'll be on my way" At this point I was back to work and he looked me up and down and said, brusquely, "You have 20 minutes and then I'm having your truck towed". No offer of help or advice or anything. Then he turns on his heel, walks back to his car and gets in. Some how I figured "calling me a tow truck" and "having your truck towed" were two VERY different outcomes from my perspective. Well, thankfully the Chevy S10 left plenty of room between the radiator & engine front and I had the hose replaced and engine running in 15 minutes. Before leaving I walked back to the trooper and told him in a tone that only an idiot would think was gratitude "Thanks for all your help" He replied back without a hint of irony or understanding "That's what we're here for" You ever get the feeling that you just met someone whose continued existence it a complete waste of valuable air? That was how I felt that day!4 points

Work on Awoved started 2 years and 7 months ago according to some people over at Resetera. It's been in works longer than Grounded that is just about the get released into Early Access. So it seems likely that it's been in pre-production few years ago. They've been hiring bunch of people for the game ever since 2018 and 2019.3 points

I believe the explanation for why the gods' imagery changed from POE1 to POE 2 is that the culture in the area effects what they look like. That's my long roading way of saying I think Aedyrans are too stuffy for fishtits.3 points

I'm back to Dungeons & Dragons Online after I found out that they are giving away all adventure packs and both expansions can be purchased for less than half a month's sub stipend.. So do I, but we are in danger of running into StarWars problem. If EVERYTHING revolves around Skywalker and Palpatine the potentially big and rich universe becomes very, very small. I want my PoE3 with all the soul'y and sociopolitical glory - Yehuza and their singular god is what I am more curious about after PoE2 - but I think it would be for the best for the IP as the whole if Avowed was something different. Let's see Eora from a point of view of a bloke, who doesn't get to chat with Gods on regular basis. In PoE1 lore and metaphysics were in service of the story, while in PoE2 I felt the story was in service of lore and metaphysics. Shame as there are some real gold nuggets in there.2 points

I decided to give LotRO a try and made a female hobbit guardian, because (sadly) I can't play an orc, I wouldn't play an elf if you put a gun to my head, humans are boring, and dwarves are cool, but I've played tons of them in other games. I only just started but it seems decent enough, better looking than I expected from a 450 year old game. The combat is your bog standard MMO combat, which is to say about as stimulating as popping a Xanax and watching the paint dry, hopefully it gets better once I have more skills to work with. As an aside, the game plays quite well with a Steam Controller. I'm probably one of the only people on the planet that really likes the Steam Controller, I'm glad I got one when I did since it's unlikely Valve will continue to produce them.2 points

If you seen Nosferatu either the original or the Wergner Herzod remake, I would recommend Shadow of the Vampire with Dafoe playing the titular role.2 points

But...but some of us like metaphysics. And there are dozens of us. Dozens! On a more serious note: Deadfire's plot could've used a bit less metaphysics, or at the very least clearer metaphysics. A look at the amount of threads trying to figure out what exactly happened in the end, dissatisfaction over the main story, and the writers having to add an explanation to the finished game in the form of Woedica's book, all point at that. I had a lot of fun thinking about the impact on Eora's metaphysics in Poko Kohara, the Wheel, and everything else, but even I have to agree that it was a bit much, and could at the very least have been handled a bit better. For the trilogy though, I at least want to see them finish the story they started. It'd be a shame not to at least tie off the existing meta(physics)plot, but perhaps tie it in with the general world/factions a bit more; Deadfire often felt like the main quest just hung in the background, leaving the factions to do their unconnected thing as the meat of the game. But Deadfire, to me at least, is a clear "mid-story" game, mostly setting up for the last part; it'd be a shame not to do something with that, and the characters who've been part of it from the start. I always felt Deadfire handled it pretty well with the "lose your soul" thing, considering it lines up perfectly with the metaphysical "all power comes from developing your soul" idea, though they could have made "reclaiming" it a bit more meaningful. That aside, is it really that hard to start again with a 1st level character, especially when a reason is given? I've had plenty of tabletop characters whose backstories implicated that they ought to be less or more capable than their mechanical level, and it's not like the levels of companions tend to differ depending on their life experience in most RPG's. Not to mention that mechanically, it'd be boring as hell to play through a game that doesn't have you properly growing in power.2 points

PoE as the world interests me due to its themes and central conflict. I am generally not a lore, if it doesn't "mean" anything. As such Avowed doesn't interest me becuase of its ties to PoE, though I am glad the IP is not completely abandoned. As the IP is seperated from Pillars, I don't expect it to be directly tied to it, and therefore I am not automatically interested in its story. It's also not lead by Josh, so I don't necessaty expect it to have the same feel and focus as PoE1&2. Though the main point would be, that if in unlikely case PoE3 would be made in the future, I don't think Avowed would be a mandatory part of the story. Unless, of course, they wrap up what could be Watcher's storyline in Avowed - I would be heartbroken about it as all my hopes would be brutally crushed. But it is Obsidian's big RPG, and I like Obsidian games. I am even keeping an eye on Grounded, even though it really doesn't took like my cup of tea. Luckly for me I am also capable of liking FP-RPGs - F:NV is still the best Obsidian game IMO. I definitely wouldn't stop playing a series I enjoy, becase it gets a spinoff I don't want to play - I mean I played a bit of Fallout2 recently, and Bethesdas Fallouts are garbage.2 points

The next Obsidian RPG will be a romance-centric game where you navigate the intricacies of the Minneapolis music scene after the death of Prince. Purify yourself in the waters of Lake Minnetonka. Yeah, I meant that the protagonist is at most implied to have the same soul as the Watcher. It should be a new character everytime imo, it was weird to go from a badass who killed dragons and an archmage to a wimp in deadfire.2 points

I checked Paul Kirsch's website, and it has him as a Narrative designer on Avowed, which is a good sign in my book. He did a lot of work on Tyranny and various characters and side quests in Deadfire, notably the Waidwen sequence in BoW, so with him on the team I'm cautiously optimistic concerning narrative.2 points

Also hope the protagonist isnt some past reincarnation of the watcher from the previous games, that would be extremely cheesy. Just stay away from metaphysics and watchers completely, focus on politics and evils of colonialism. "Gods" should be just something NPCs believe in, rather than entities, that you (as the pc) know exist for sure, and even communicate with you1 point

Their maths is fine. Discounts are always applied sequentially, if for no other reason than it stops 2x 50+% discounts == being paid to buy a game. 100*0.85*0.83=70.55% price, or 29% discount. People may expect a 32% discount from 100*(1-(0.15+0.17)) but that isn't actually what should happen.1 point

The announcement only says Xbox and Windows - and I highly doubt that Microsoft will put in any effort to release it for Linux navitely. But since it's the Unreal engine you will be able to play it on Linux via Steam Proton soon enough I guess. At least I didn't encounter a game that I couldn't play via Proton at some point after release.1 point

I don't buy the Living Lands either. Living Lands is a lawless wild place with eccentric inhabitants. It's not a place where I would expect to see a huge statue of "noble Galawain" on the side of a mountain or stone fortifications. Then you add the supposed story of the game: "Fight against incoming threat of tyranny". In the Living Lands? It's a lawless place, everyone is a threat of tyranny. That "storyset" doesn't fit the Woedica/Aedyran references in the trailer anyway, unless that poster misunderstood and it was "be the incoming threat of tyranny" (from Aedyr). Going by the intro paragraph, that person received vague descriptions of where the game start and decided it was the Living Lands based on them. Green hills, forests, mountains and adra fits most of Eora landmass. The poster doesn't appear to know what is a Spore/Sporeling thought...1 point
-
Also there is some info in deadlines Last dlc, from Reddit user MickyJim: Now this is very interesting. There's a series of books in Forgotten Sanctum that I believe are implied to partially predict the future. One is called "The Reclamation of the Living Lands" and it's description goes like this... My new theory, then, is that Aedyr is trying to conquer the Living Lands1 point
-
TBH, what flusters me the most is the game being set in the Living Lands rather than in Aedyr like everybody assumed. In retrospect maybe Aedyr never made sense, though. It would be unwise for Obsidian to set their first game of this size and scope in the heavily populated imperial homeland, rather than in another frontier zone like the Dyrwood and Deadfire Archipelago.1 point

I do not think that Josh checks translations at all since his job is a different one (too expensive to waste time with checking localisations) and he and Obsidian have to trust the translators to do a proper job. He is fluent in German (and knows Spanish and some French iirc) - but I guess it's not enough to determine if a translation is really good or just understandable. I'm fluent in English but I wouldn't want to/couldn't determine if a translation from German to English is actually really good or just not obviously bad.1 point

Only if they managed to pull off broader systems for characterprogression and interactivity. Better narrative design is almost a given.1 point

Nah, I don’t think so. Dyrwood and it’s conflict is far too defined. We also have a game set there. It would give creators more freedom to explore other parts of the world. If it was the War of Black trees Aedyrian soldier would be fighting the Glanfathans, not an invasion of vessels. Narration and flags clearly reference the Woedica, as well as inscription on the sword (Oathbinder). Also the statue doesn’t fit Dyrwood to me. It’s far to grand - suggesting a more powerful and older empire, My money is still It being Aedyr.1 point

Is there any info outside this video? At the moment I would say its too early to call it "skyrim clone". OK, in the video we can see a first person perspective, you have a sword in one hand and cast a spell with the other. I did not see mentioning "open world", "levelling up by skill use" or "join every faction at the same time". I really hope they do not use the level scaling from TES, it killed any feeling of progress. I love gothic1+2 or risen1. Enemies stay as they are, but you start very weak and you grow stronger over time.1 point

Like? So far I see no indication that it’s connected in any tangible way to PoE. it’s definitely too lush for rauatai I would say.1 point

It really depends. There are some faction resolutions that will result in your party members leaving permanently. Without letting out spoilers it's hard to say. There are some faction resolutions that involve destroying another faction, and the party member who aligns with that faction will leave. However, there are other factions that--while not the same as the party member's faction alignment--won't require you to destroy that party member's faction, so while the party member may not be the most pleased, they also won't leave. For the most part, with one exception, it's only this final faction quest that causes party members to leave, so while they may broadcast some suspicion or be displeased as you go adventuring, they generally won't leave until the very end. I think it's even possible to piss off multiple faction/party members into leaving at the same time, though my memory is hazy on this. In general, I pick two-ish story companions, and fill in the rest with sidekicks or hirelings. I've only rarely ever dealt with party members leaving when I wasn't expecting it, and it was always Pallegina for some reason (it doesn't help that Pallegina will also leave if you botch a relatively early-mid game quest, which is the one exception to the "only end game quest causes party members to leave" that i can think of). If all else fails you can go the "anarchists" path and don't align with any faction and just build up your ship to brave the final area by yourself. No one gets pissed at you and leaves. (Also principi is a pretty safe faction to align with, in tems of pissing people off.)1 point

Weirdest thing, just two days ago I had a dream of ending up at Obsidian office somehow (dream logics), and them announcing another Pillars related project via a teaser trailer thing of sorts. Immediately when the trailer went live it seemed obvious what was going on, and I was like "So Faergus got his wish (Skyrim RPG set in Eora)". I don't usually dream about games, or anything like that. Like, at all. Though, the longer the trailer went on it hinted at a possibility of an actual party based RPG (closer to Dragon Age) rather than a first person one. I remember talking to Josh about the possibility of an optionally tactical 3d camera, and whether that would be a design challenge and he agreed it was. Tonight I had a dream where I ended up at either Tim Cain's or Leonard Boyarsky's house (can't remember which), where over dinner they talked about that new Fallout game they had in the oven. I tried to convince them why quest markers are evil, and even the missus (dunno which one it was) got involved in the debate, but then I woke up. So, if that comes to pass as well, you heard it here first.1 point

For pistols, I can recommend both SC Ranger and SC Monk. I have also played MC Ranger/Monk, but pistols really want the PL 8 and 9 monk and ranger abilities. Between the three options, I find Monk to have the highest performance. Here are the abilities I think are important for a pistolero: SC Monk: Lightning Strikes upgrade to Swift Strikes: usually Swift Flurry is the pick, but it only works with melee weapons. A 15% lightning lash is very nice to have instead. Instant activation and no cooldown. Enduring Dance upgrade to Dance of Death: good pistols tend to have on-crit effects, so you want to build accuracy where you can. Instant activation and no cooldown. Stunning Surge upgrade to Stunning Blow: again, you want to be critting, so you might as well get your mortification back when you do. You will be doing a lot of stunning as a SC pistol monk, not just with this ability. Duality of Mortal Presence just because +10 Int is too good to pass up. PL8: Resonant Touch - not a great power until you get to PL9... PL9: Whispers of the Wind: this blows the doors off most of the Ranger kit, unfortunately, because getting 5 full attacks in the span of a couple of seconds is just too good. WotW is also cheeseable on its own, like by adding Ajamuut's Stalking Cloak for free stuns on every target. I typically open with Scordeo's Trophy equipped; if opening from stealth, using Stunning Surge. If the battle starts unstealthed, then you'll immediately buff and launch Whispers of the Wind, which will give you ~5 hits from Scordeo's Trophy, which gives you a nice -25% Recovery Time buff from the Opening Barrage enhancement. If you have 5 wounds when your first WotW is done (sometimes yes, sometimes no), then you switch to Thundercrack Pistol (if you want CC) or Eccea's Arcane Blaster (if you just want to do damage) for the next WotW. Thundercrack Paralyzes its target for 2s on a crit, so depending on your accuracy you may be locking down a lot of the fight right there. 2s doesn't sound like much, but it's quite effective in shifting the momemntum of a team fight. Eccea's does raw damage with a powerful "imbued ammunition" second hit, and a chance to fire multiple times with the Fractured Bullet enchantment, so it does a lot of damage and shines once Scordeo's Trophy has stacked its recovery time buff. While you wait for wounds to build between WotW activations, I usually toss Stunning Surge around with Eccea's, but it depends on the need of the fight. Edit: I forgot to mention Resonant Touch. WotW will spread resonant touches all around. When you feel that enemies have enough (they can each have more than 10 stacks, but 10 is the maximum that will take effect, so I tend to use it once I see 10 stacks), you can activate the power and dump a lot of raw damage all at once on every enemy with stacks. After a couple of WotW activations, it can be a great clean up power. SC Ranger: Standard Ranger accuracy-increasing powers like Marked Prey and such are great PL5: Driving Flight is a superstar. Getting a free second hit on another enemy who is within a ~150 degree arc (I think? Maybe 180, but sometimes I'm sure somebody will get hit and they don't, so... ) behind the first target is amazing value for a single power pick. Weapon abilities activate on the second hit, so everything your pistols can do to the primary target can be done to the secondary target. This also works for abilities like Hobbling Shot. I get Driving Flight as soon as it becomes available. Thorny Roots: fast-casting, foe-only AoE immobilize and pierce/slash damage. The only thing keeping this from being as good as many wizard spells is the small radius. But: foe-only. It's good. PL8: Twinned Shots. This is fantastic. For 2 bond you attack your target twice. Each attack is subject to driving flight. You can open a fight with Scordeo's Trophy and have four stacks of the buff before the enemies have acted. Or with Thundercrack Pistol you get two chances to paralyze two targets. Or with Eccea's two chances for split shots, which is very fun when it happens. PL8: Whirling Strikes. This is another very good power, but counterintuitive for a pistolero. It requires a melee weapon, but uses a full attack and will fully use an offhand ranged weapon. One great way to use this is to open from stealth with the Lover's Embrace dagger and Scordeo's Trophy: everybody in range of the power (which is considerably further than melee range, FYI) will be hit with the massive raw damage DoT from Whirling Strikes. Everybody within range of the power will also be hit with the never-ending raw damage DoT from Lover's Embrace. And everybody in pistol range (much further than the power's range) will be shot with Scordeo's Trophy. I really wish it could be paired with a rogue for backstab damage, but Mick Jagger tells me that I can't always get what I want. In practice I'm usually able to get five stacks or so from Scordeo's Trophy and destroy or nearly destroy three enemies who were in melee range - and they won't live long with those DoTs. I heavily invested in stealth on this character to be able to do this. PL9: Stunning Shots: this is amazing. Don't let "shots" mislead you: every weapon crit you do, melee or ranged, interrupts its target. This is enormous. With Driving Flight, you are typically interrupting two enemies on auto attacks. That is huge passive CC, and makes it easier to swap away from Thundercrack Pistol on difficult fights. I was not able to find much use for the other Ranger PL9 powers. Again, I open with Scordeo's Trophy to build stacks of the speed buff from the pistol - one or two Twinned Shots for -20% or -40% Recovery Time, then switch to Thundercrack to disrupt/paralyze casters and Eccea's to finish things off. Ranger/Monk: The abilities are mostly the same here. There is a pleasing economy of power picks because so many monk powers (and a few Ranger powers) are useless to a pistolero, but it really hurts to lose out at the top end of the power curve on both classes. If you have to go this way, I'd recommend modding to raise the level cap or give access to PL8 or PL8 and PL9 abilities to multiclass characters by level 20. The best part about a pistolero is that you get three unique pistols that each serves a different purpose, and switching between them is very useful. I take Arms Bearer for this reason. Scordeo's does damaging crits and buffs your recovery time, Thundercrack has a nice lightning lash and paralyzes on crits, and Eccea's does raw + corrode damage for those enemies that are immune to pierce. I recommend getting each of them as soon as possible. I think there are other classes and multiclasses that could work well, but these are the ones I have tried and can speak about with knowledge. The Ranger, Monk, and Ranger/Monk also do well with blunderbusses (SC monk especially - WotW with two blunderbusses and the aoe modal and bounces.... it's over the top), but if you just search for "boeroer blunderbuss" on this site you'll find much more information than I can provide on that subject1 point

I’ve played a lot of games... and a lot of RPGs. My first video game that I got addicted to was Legend of Zelda - the most incredible RPG saga ever made (arguably). When I started playing Divinity: Original Sin 1 and 2, I was beyond impressed. Like, those games are SO well done. Amazing. POE is its own beast though. Honestly I don’t think I’ve ever played a game with such an insane amount of spells, abilities and class combos to choose from!! Going through the Wizard tree I was like wtf there’s gotta be like 75 different spells in here, lol. Some of them sound so badass too. (Edit b/c too much reveal) Another thing I enjoy is the overall story and incredible gameplay and sometimes dialogue decisions impact the build you’re doing! I’m not gonna do a full review in here, I just wanted to say I think this is a fantastically well thought out and immersive game that I’m going to recommend to a LOT of my gamer friends. I am 100% addicted. RIP my life1 point

I couldn't agree more. I think this game is pretty amazing. The sheer number of everything in multiple categories is staggering--classes and subclasses to multiclass, armors, weapons, consumables, wizard spells, cipher spells, druid spells, chanter spells, priest spells, types of bonuses or maluses, character voices, interactions, alignments and reputations, and many more without even mentioning how all of these things react with each other. The depth of the themes are worthy of adult consideration. The fact that you can't kill the god at the end I appreciate so much, and I can't help but think that the type of influence the main character has on the Deadfire is lost on many players: one person's choices make huge differences in a world where he or she didn't save the universe. Really, I think this game is too much for the average gamer. It is a shame that it's not recognized as the brilliant masterpiece that it is, but I suspect that time is on its side.1 point

Hi, is this new? I currently have a Berserker/Helwalker in my party, wieldig Saru Sichr. Whenever I use Force of Anguish the target will get hit twice: first by FoA itself and then by Carnage. Which is a significant single target dmg increase. I guess by pushing the target backwards it gets into the AoE of Carnage right in time. I never noticed this - although I played Ravagers before. It's so nice that I find myself using FoA a lot more than I initially planned (wanted to use Stunning Surge a lot)... I already tested with Clear Out + Carnage (because that's also a push effect): nope. Here the initial target gets hit twice as well - but it's 2*Clear Out (known behavior), no additional Carnage hit on the initial target. Anyway - I thought maybe you guys find this interesting.1 point
