Yeah, you're right. I didn't read Story Teller as much as the German translation called Erzähl mir was. I just figured it would be easier to refer to the original, the other stuff was from the How and Why Wonder Books series (Was ist Was by Tessloff, and Hurlshot probably knows or at least knows of the book series). My bad. Whil Wheaton also loves Star Trek Picard. That makes him whatever the opposite of an authority on Star Trek could be called. we have championed lloyd alexander more than once on these boards. when we mention how the best and most often overlooked fantasy authors is those who crafted books for a younger audience, lloyd alexander is getting frequent mention along with the likes o' madeleine l'engle, norton juster, and neil gaiman, to name only a few. that said, while we do much enjoy the prydain books, am gonna observe our favorite lloyd alexander series is actual westmark. is fantasy, but perhaps not in the way folks tend to think o' fantasy. no magic. regardless, if hurl has not read westmark, we highly recommend. HA! Good Fun!

To tell you the truth I think this quarantine is my new religion. I'm finding I'm much happier not interacting with people. Our bi-weekly WebEx calls are all the social interaction I want. And even that seems tedious.

The number of people who spend 2000+USD on a rig to play Tomb Raider at 1080p low quality is not overly large. Way more realistic offerings from Intel, certainly, and they seem to have finally acknowledged that Zen changed the game in desktop semi permanently. A lot of the senseless segmentation like gating HT has gone, not before time. End of the day though it's basically the same thing Intel has offered since 2016 (well 2017, for the 10 core 7900k) with a price drop, marginally better clocks and a lot more juice required. They will probably also have the same supply issues they currently have outside the US. Should also be noted, Linus got unusually low temps/ wattage for his 10900k, others got considerably higher wattage.

Funny story. Wheaton has likely not seen that scene (from Q-Less), because he went with a DS9 watching guide that leaves it out, for his first time through the show. I'd say Q makes for fun -if not necessarily good- Trek so that makes it worth recommending especially as it's the only appearance of the character in the entire show, but what do I know. So yeah, pretty much the opposite of a Trek authority as majestic said. In his defense (ugh), I don't think he's never presented himself as one.

A Hollywood scene played out for real in China! Here, a wedding scene from Netflix show, The Art of Travel: And here, a wedding that happened in China in 2019... ... but first, some context: the bride had been cheating with the groom's brother-in-law, (i.e., his sister's husband.) The groom hired his bother-in-law, a contractor, to renovate his new home for his "soon-to-be-wife" after marriage. The bride and brother-in-law somehow hooked up during the home renovation. However, unbeknown to them, the groom had hired someone else to install security cameras everywhere in and around his home... and the camera worked! So the security camera guy (who was also a friend of the groom) saw the video footage and informed the groom, (that is a real friend.) The groom knew the bride was cheating, but he waited until the wedding to publicly play the video (in the top screen) to embarrass her in front of all the guests. Justice served.

German TV (living in the border region, I had more German language than Danish tv channels to choose from) was quite open minded about things in the 70's. What's not to love about gratuitous nudity and violence (not being mutually exclusive either) 😇

I think there are several subsets of people that are vehemently against the opening up of states. There are those that are legitimately scared, and I feel for those people and have nothing bad to say about them. There are those that are in states continuing the lockdown and are jealous of people living in areas opening up and they feel if they have to stay home on lockdown, they want others to have to be locked down too. Then there are some that have grow accustomed to not having to go to work and collecting unemployment and wish they could just stay home and collect unemployment forever. I'm not a scientist, I can't tell you if it's too soon to open up, I guess we'll know in a few weeks. I'm hoping for the best. Here's the thing though, if we don't start opening now, what are we waiting for? Flatten the curve? Curve is already flattened. Prevent hospitals from being over run? Most hospitals are at half capacity or less now, some are having to lay off staff because they are so empty. Availability of testing? Most places AFAIK have plenty of tests readily available now. What do we wait for, a vaccine? You're not going to see a vaccine for at least a year, if we ever get one. We can't stay locked down forever, we have to face this eventually.

Same boat with me. Though I do have to say it's a sign of how good things have been on the AMD side when we are complaining about being limited to 2x cores, 1.5 node improvements, +20% IPC and +20% clocks across a single motherboard. Shame it won't be ~35% IPC improvement, but then the alternative has gone through 3 new motherboards, +400Mhz, -IPC, 2.5x cores, ++++ node and a hundred odd extra watts heat over the same period. Could definitely be worse. The problem is now that 4000 series will (probably, gods of DDR5 permitting) be on an otherwise dead socket. Has to happen at some time, but it will put off some buyers; and the alternative may be extortionate RAM prices as phones grab all the new ddr5 and shaky gen1 memory controllers like the one I have that tries to brick my MB if I use XMP. You'd also have to expect that 3000 series procs will hold their value well too given that they'll be a terminal upgrade for a lot of people. Most of the security updates are done via windows updates iirc, so they can be turned off if you want to check if they are the issue.

The Charlotte area, where I live, is set to reopen this Friday. Hopefully people stay level headed and don't go overboard when they can enter a bar again for the first time in 2 months. I'm on the road right now and it's interesting how different regions are. I was in the northeast recently and that part of the country... I won't go so far as to call it a police state, but it's not that far off. As I've been traveling west, I could see it easing right before my eyes. Ohio about half the people were wearing masks, in Indiana, less than half and much less on edge. I'm in Wisconsin now and if you just woke up from a coma, you'd hardly know there was a pandemic. I get home in about a week and a half. I'll get to see my sister for the first time in over a year. She's moving down from Massachusetts to stay with me for a while. Earlier this year she had the same thought I had 4 years ago "What the hell am I still doing here?" Originally, she was going to come down to visit at the beginning of April to check out the area and also to visit friends she has that live near Raleigh. Obviously, the pandemic put the kibosh on those plans. I had told her earlier that if she ever wanted to move down to North Carolina, she could stay with me for a while if necessary and my folks made the same offer to her if she wanted to move to southern Florida. The Covid happened, she got furloughed, then the place she was working closed down, so she decided to just take the plunge and take me up on my offer. I'm happy to have her, plus she'll have the place mostly to herself since I'm on the road most of the time. Ultimately, she wants to move to the Asheville area, since my sister is an artist and Asheville is low key famous for its art scene, plus it's a gorgeous area. I'm thinking of moving there myself in the future or Tennessee (no state income tax!). I want to buy a house in the mountains eventually, I'm not yet sure whether the North Carolina side or the Tennessee (think Gatlinburg or Pigeon Forge area) side, both are breathtakingly beautiful areas. As an aside, it makes me sad how many people I see online (not here necessarily) that seem to be rooting for the states opening up to falter and have a second wave. It's a sickening attitude. I'd like to believe that the vast majority of people are not that awful and I'm going to chalk it up to the fact that the fringe wackos are the ones that tend to yell the loudest on social media and such.

LotRO is still going well. My son and I are tackling quests together, he as a hunter and me as a warden. We are up to level 17 and it was amazing to take him through the Old Forest to meet Tom Bombadil. I also have a dwarf stout axe Guardian that is level 27 to play solo. I am excited to get to Moria. That is my favorite area of any game I think I have ever played. We also bought a couple of houses in an elven neighborhood. My daughter played a bit too, but she seems less excited about it. 😝

trump loyalty baffles us. the double-down on stoopid or wrong is shrugged off by trump loyalists, while responsible journalism is derided. whether is injecting disinfectant, cancer causing sound from windmills or sharpie altered hurricane forecasts, is the media which is at fault. what? the media didn't immediate vilify hydroxy championing by trump, 'cause honestly, how many folks in the media knew anything 'bout hydroxychloroquine? journalists did what they were s'posed to do-- they interviewed/asked actual experts to figure out what is hydroxy and why it would be a treatment getting Presidential approval. so when indisputed medical experts such as fauci suggested it were too early to advocate hydroxy and that it were arguable irresponsible to promote such a drug w/o more rigorous and controlled testing, journalists questioned trump 'bout his advocacy. blame on media? why? 'course predictable, trump doubled-down and suggested plots and conspiracies in addition to making claim the drug were perfect safe and people should take for covid-19. weren't a major issue until trump made it an issue. nevertheless, is somehow media's fault. btw, in case medicine dan missed it, we had the hydroxychloroquine discussion earlier in this thread and personal we can see some arguable optimism for use by young and healthy patients. for older patients with comorbidities unlikely to be facing cytokine storm scenario from covid-19... nevertheless, 'cause has been known for decades hydroxy has positive lab results on viruses in lab situations, every time a new virus appears, hydroxy gets tested, as it should. has never proven effective in the past outside o' a lab, but is no reason not to at least test. regardless, a reasonable person might question why trump were so dogged advocating hydroxy in spite o' expert cautions... just as a reasonable person might be concerned 'bout trump's windmill crusade and his willingness to alter weather maps. a reasonable person might... trump loyalists abandon reasonable. blame media. blame democrats. blame religious minorities such as muslims and jews. blame immigrants. this kinda endemic obtuseness wouldn't bother us save that on a national scale is dangerous. is dangerous when the leader is 'bove question and his followers is so quick to cast blame elsewheres. am gonna remind medicine dan and others how this double-down behaviour were a day 1 (and earlier) issue. inauguration crowd size were not a big deal, until the administration lied 'bout it. the press weren't dogged 'bout crowd size-- crowd size were meaningful to few save for trump. media kept asking 'cause the administration were gaslighting and were attempting to force parks service and other nonpartisan bureaucrats to lie on behalf o' the administration. shoulda' been a warning to the trump loyalists that their champion were willing to gaslight and come up with "alternative facts" bs to defend what shoulda' been an issue o' limited consequence. if trump would lie 'bout inconsequential, then why not the important stuff? oh, and medicine dan, seeing as how he is now a medical professional, should be particular concerned 'bout the President's irresponsible advocacy o' hydroxy. 'cause o' the President advocating w/o legit scientific basis, there is now a shortage o' hydroxy for people who suffer from lupus... unless you are rich and wealthy and have connections. understandably, and for what should be obvious reasons, lupus patients who use immunosuppressives has had to alter their medication regimen during the current pandemic. so for lupus patients hoping to manage their condition, hydroxychloroquine and chloroquine are the options. am suspecting some in media do take perverse pleasure at seeing every new study which supports notion hydroxy is as ineffective regarding covid-19 as every past virus. unfortunate. no doubt there is more than a few media folks who, understandable, want trump to fail. go figure. is no surprise some take personal being labeled as enemies o' the state for reporting. fact some in the media want trump to fail is unfortunate, but such bias don't make their reporting o' trump blunders wrong. however, it don't take any kinda mental gymnastics to recognize media bias while simultaneous admitting trump is a mendacious and skeevy huckster who will invariably double-down on every falsehood and mistake no matter how minor. That may well be. But it only took me about two days to figure it out. I talk to other people about my experiences. After the first day some were excited about what I told them. One was pretty much on the verge of buying it. But after the second day I told them about the lack of big dungeons, or large clearable outdoor areas, and they weren't so enthused.

I hardly ever finish a playthrough let alone go and finish the DLC. Thing is though that when you don't do the DLC you'll get specific notice to the ending that you've let something dangerous exist that affects the Deadfire in a bad way.

Very interesting viewpoint, I have to say. Seems even a little bit illogical from my perspective. Because I also play these games for the narrative, which is why I love the DLCs (except for SSS), because they mean more narrative content, more story, more immersion. SSS is mostly battle, so that's not so interesting. But otherwise: count me in! Stories within stories is one of the oldest tricks in the book; just think of how many stories within stories there are in Lord of the Rings, for instance. Often, it works beautifully.

I do skip one or two or even all DLCs in a playthrough from time to time - once I hit lvl 20 the urge to go further may evaporate because I have proven to myself that character idea X works well - and that's it. So yeah: why not leave them out? I mean if one has already played them before and knows the content there's no big loss (unless you desperately want to use a certain item from the DLCs).

I see what you did there Obsidian team! I didn't see anyone else mentioning the Tossball cards as Obsidian members. After inspecting the cards, I noticed that they looked very 'life like' so to say, so I pulled up a recent Obsidian team photo, and see if I could match any Tossball card players with the Obsidian team.
