  5. You have it backwards. When considering whether that power should be vested on law enforcement officials, it rests on those arguing for it to prove that the needs sufficiently justify the accidental deaths that will inevitably result. So what is the evidence that no knock warrants substantially help save lives or better enforce laws vis-à-vis the alternatives? It's baffling how an increasing amount people don't realize that state power isn't all encompassing except for whatever restrictions are placed on it when it's actually the other way around -- the state must be explicitly be empowered to regulate and enforce, and each of those endowments must be carefully considered before and closely monitored for abuse and effectiveness after.

  6. In the 20 or so years it has been a thing there is no statistical decrease in violent crime that can be attributed to it. The notion that while what you have is bad it "might" be worse without it just fails logic. No argument from me on your second statement.

  7. Unions have nothing to do with socialism. Unions help workers to get what they deserve. Just compare the crunch exploitation of game creators and the “small” workers around movie creation. The video game people in numerous cases do not even get credited for their hard work...

  12. If you need to understand Blackstone ratio then just read the following quote by John Adams: "It is of more importance to the community that innocence should be protected, than it is, that guilt should be punished; for guilt and crimes are so frequent in this world, that all of them cannot be punished....when innocence itself, is brought to the bar and condemned, especially to die, the subject will exclaim, 'it is immaterial to me whether I behave well or ill, for virtue itself is no security.' And if such a sentiment as this were to take hold in the mind of the subject that would be the end of all security whatsoever"

  16. I recently bought a new computer and gave my son my old one, which opened up an entire world of new games for him. Basically he can now play anything in my massive Steam library, whereas his previous hand me down PC was pretty limited. He is almost 10, and it's been fun watching him discover all these PC games that I've played over the years. His first two that he got into were Baman: Arkham Asylum and Assassin's Creed 2. He doesn't have a controller yet (possible birthday gift) so I've been impressed by his ability to work the keyboard on these game sthat play better with a controller. I was worried AssCreed might be too violent, but I figure it also give me a chance to lecture him about the Duomo di Santa Maria Del Fiore and Da Vinci. The other game he wanted to play was Lord of the Rings Online. I've played this off and on for 13 years. I hadn't been back in awhile, so it didn't take much to convince me we should team up and play together. I let him use my old account with all the perks and content and started from scratch. I even set us up on Discord, since the computers are not in the same room. I was surprised how hooked I am again. They added two new races. One is a High Elf, basically a really old elf that fought in the big battle against Sauron back in the day, but has been in a coma since the 2nd age. Bleh, not an elf fan. The Stout Axe Dwarves are the other new race, and they are fantastic. You start out as a slave in Mordor, and escape around the same time Gollum does. It's a great way to work you into the whole Fellowship story. So far I'm really enjoying just exploring the beginner areas. They look graphically much better than they did over a decade ago when I first played, and the attention to story details in this game has always been its strong suit.

  21. As an aside the quote is not exactly relevant because the police are not the agency to "punish" crime. They don't put people in prison. The DO put people in jail but they don't keep them there. Their function, ideally, is to investigate and apprehend. After that it's the courts and criminal justice systems. Also rife with flaws but, not the topic we are on here. That is what Franklin and Adams were referring to. It does not happen often. If it is even one percent I'd be mildly surprised. But I would not give revoking that power a second thought over that one percent. That is an unacceptable failure level when the lives and safety of innocent people are at hazard for it. The idea of accepting 1% of warrantless raids and searches leading to the death or abuse of innocents as the cost of doing business is utterly appalling. The police should be held to a higher standard. Does that make their job too tough? Maybe. But too bad, this is what you are held too. Don't like it? Perhaps policework is not for you. To obtain a warrant for a search, arrest, etc the police must convince a judge they have reasonable cause to believe a crime has taken place nd the target of the warrant is a suspect or material witness to the crime. There is a "neutral" third party that is a check on their activity. Under the conditions that allow a warrantless search and seizure (which also include exigent circumstances such as someone screaming for help as an example) they don't even need to know if a crime has happened before kicking down doors with guns drawn. Exigent circumstances have always been a thing. But it is fairly new to allow them to do it without them. Even if you accept that 99% of police officers are honest and conscientious civil servants trying to do right (not at all a point I will concede) that is entrusting way too much power in one group of human beings over another. Especially since they typically pay no penalty for being wrong. It's a recipe for abuse, brutality, disaster. Whis is what we are getting even if in small quantity. What qualified immunity means is that if a police office is acting in their capacity as a police officer, in good faith, and in compliance with the law and regulation, no matter what they do they are immune from criminal or civil prosecution. The cop kicked down your door, beat the holy f--k out of you and shot the family dog in front of the children then found out he was in the wrong house. Too bad for you. He thought it was the right house. It is a privilege granted by the municipalities that charter police forces. And it is something I think should be revoked nationwide. Making people responsible for their actions has a wonderful way of cleaning s--t like that up.

  24. Well, seems strange for the police to request a warrant and not know what the situation is. And yes, you can have protocols for one situation, narrow is not bad. Then again, this is the cops so they can just knock very softly and then storm the place so is a moot point.

You ought to be able to comprehend the fallacy of comparing search warrants where there is no immediate danger to anyones life and the situations where there is imminent danger of someones life.

  30. Steel Garotte/Trickster does way more damage with Offensive Parry (and the occasional Riposte) but has lower defenses and limited resources. Keep in mind that the Bloodmage can stack Arcane Veil and Llengrath's Safeguard for +70 to deflection (and +20 to the other defenses and +5 AR) which won't get reduced when getting hit and can prolong that stuff endlessly (in theory) with Wall of Draining. You can trigger Safeguard easily with Blood Sacrifice. Also self damaging stuff like Sacred Immolation and Alacrity are no problem when you can prolong Hands of Light and such effects in addition to draining - while the Trickster "only" has a limited supply of +30 deflection from Mirrored Images at best. When I do the same encounter solo against not-too hard melee-foes like tigers - which might represent the common "mob" - the Trickster variant kills them faster. But if the enemies have even more ACC/defenses and/or the fight takes too long he will run out of guile and then die faster. This might be a problem in the later game - for example in DLCs like SSS where fights can take quite a while. The Bloodmage can go on endlessly. Both are vulnerable to Arcane Dampener. They usually have very high Will (due to maxed RES and high INT) but grazes can still occur. The Trickster variant is more fun (in my opinion) if you want less micro. You only need to position the guy somewhere in from of melee enemies, cast Mirrored Images and Inspired Beacon and he'll be like a meat grinder from hell. The Bloodmage variant requires a lot more micromanagement and setup with buffs etc. and takes a longer to finish most fights - but in the end I think it has a lot more potential.

  33. I just remembered that one scene in the first or second episode. Picard was standing in his room, but the camera didn't look at him, it was pointing at his old timey wooden clock and you'd see Picard's reflection in it. To me, this particular scene is the show boiled down. This scene made no damn sense, there was no reason for it to be there, it tried to look artsy but failed, and it was just uncomfortably long. Oh, and what about all these lens flares?! There is no light source in front of the camera!! Why is there a lens flare right now?? WHY IS IT EVERYWHERE.

  34. This sounds fun. I saw you commenting somewhere else on Steel Garrote/Blood Mage too. I really like the idea of that as well. Makes me think of a Death Knight if you use Concelhaut's Corrosive Siphon that you mentioned. Since you played both, which one did you like more? I know fun is subjective but your builds were always fun to play for me. (Even been using PoE1 builds from you in the past!).

Finished recording my ultimate run, I just copied tenray's zealot run (woedica priest/streetfighter rogue) with some very very minor adjustments here and there. I even encountered the same bug that made me alt f4 and waste 2 days in game time at the SSS bridge repair interaction. Heres hoping obsidian approves it Shoutout to Victor Creed & jaggedjimmayjay82 for helping me figure the dragul sss fight, and ofcourse tenray since i basically copied his strat!

  37. "Records show that the police investigation was centered around a "trap house" more than 10 miles from Taylor's apartment, and that a judge had approved a "no-knock" search warrant, meaning officers did not have to identify themselves, according to The Courier-Journal." No knock warrants should be banned in all municipalities, IMO. I understand the desire of the police to keep people from destroying evidence, but they will continue to lead to these kind of incidents if allowed to stand. Sadly, reading this story reminds me a lot of Kathryn Johnston. I'm sure there are plenty of others people who've lost their lives around the country that others could point out.

  39. I'm a massive fan of M1, loved the age M2 was set in, the cars, the guns and such I loved, but I really disliked the main character and the gameplay. Mafia 3 was fun, but it felt more like an GTA reskin than a Mafia game. I also loved the driving of M1, the cars felt really old and I loved that, you had to fight to stay on the road, you coulnd't just keep the pedal to the metal but actually had to plan your driving around the fact that the car didn't handle in an arcadey way; It was unforgiving, but very rewarding to get it done right. No handbrake turns through corners or powerslides, but methodical and controlled.

  41. If you have high Deflection (e.g. Paladin/Trickster) then Offensive Parry is always the better choice because it's an attack with 0 attack time and 0 recovery which can take place while you are casting stuff or drinking a potion or are in the middle of recovery. It procs on 100%(!) of melee misses and stacks with Riposte which has only a 20% proc chance (you can trigger Offensive Parry AND a Riposte from the same miss). This is very good with a Steel Garotte/Trickster because WotEP dazes automatically with Offensive Parry - which means the Steel Garotte can drain life with his parries without doing anything. Blade Form is okay if you don't have high deflection. But then I'd also skip Riposte. It is also better if you play with Turn Based because in TB mode very few misses occur (the grazing range is much bigger than in RTwP mode where misses are much more likely to happen).

  43. I saw this thread and got excited there was a new development... Prior to selling Obsidian to Microsoft. Feargus mentioned they wanted to make PoE3. Interest was also expressed of using the IP for other sorts of games, I think the obvious and mentioned extension is an Elder Scrolls competitor. I say something akin the the following it in every thread speculating on the IPs future. They should make a proper PoE3 before going beyond. It will help tie off the established arc, and allow them to segue the world towards the future of the series. These games are cheaper than a AAA title, it will take a lot of work catching up with The Elder Scrolls and in the mean time they shouldn't let the IP fallow. Doing PoE3 would be good practice to handing the series over to a director other than Josh, who seems to want to work on Pillars as more of a creative designer than a director going forward. It will keep the creative pipe-line of Obsidian busy as the engine people of Microsoft help prepare for a fully 3D title. Lastly it will allow the series to grow in expose prior to delving into more expensive and riskier ventures by growing the exposure. Imagine a PoE3 with a proper Microsoft ad campaign. Deadfire had almost no exposure. Never mind the shear amount of good will for taking their time to turn the Pillars ship before squeezing Obsidian into alignment with the Microsoft Studios machine. A AAA Pillars could perfectly straddle the line between old and new Obsidian fans, but they need to play their cards right.
