It is worth noting that +defenses to affliction is very strong (such as passives on Fighter and Paladin skill tree). If, for example, you have +20 defenses against dexterity afflictions and a rogue attempts to use crippling strike on you, you get +20 deflection against the actual weapon attack as well as +20 fortitude for the hobbled roll.3 points

yeah i think they focused too much on the later game, because 1 PL per alchemy scaled *really* well with all the different dimensions of a potion. i think 1/2 PL per alchemy could've still worked if stats still influenced poisons, because then a high-perception (maybe paired with might or intellect) could make poisons viable in early game.2 points

Whoa, whoa, hold on a second here...that link is just a recommendation to make use of the normal ignore list (while also carrying an implicit suggestion to exercise self-control), not my filters. The filters are a paid service, . (Okay, not really, but yeah, not a link to the filters. Ironically, I barely ever use the filters these days because...well, they were a useful tool for learning to stop caring and use self-control, and I've almost entirely mastered that at this point - pretty much the only time I look at one of the most egregious posters who are on my ignore lists' posts is if they happen to post directly after mine, otherwise I assume they're not talking to me and there's no need to look. I'm sure the moderators appreciate that, because in years past, I used to kind of spam them with reports for BruceVC and company's, how would one phrase it...unreadable posts? That seems appropriately non-inflammatory while still being somewhat insulting).2 points

I do not know if any Obsidian officials ever stated it directly, but it is standard procedure in the entertainment industry, not just for game developers. Here is Neil Gaiman's explanation on why he does not read unsolicited pitches (public pitches make the situation worse) and blocks people who repeatedly send him any. It includes an anecdote from the Babylon 5 production too, and with intellectual property rights being what they are, this is no different for game pitches. Pitching games to studios is barely possible (in general) without being part of the industry yourself. The only way to get your game idea made is to either do it yourself, or start working in the industry to a point where you can pitch your ideas to either studios or game designers directly on a trusted basis. Royalty lawsuits happen all the time, and even if the sued party can believable demonstrate to not have copied ideas from (unsolicited) pitches, it usually is not pretty.2 points

What's so great about 5th Element is that if Zorg wouldn't have fired all those people, Bruce Willis wouldn't have lost his job and likely wouldn't have went to that big adventure where he ruins all of Zorg's plans. Yet Bruce Willis and Zorg never even meet / are probably completely unaware of each other. /Edit: lol1 point

Ah, so you tried it. Fair shake then. If you mentioned it before, I forgot, I'm sorry about that. I like the story of it too, but I was aiming more at the animation itself, the art. But if we are on the topic of the story, Violet Evergarden was pretty much a drama too (although not a soft piano one) and people liked it well enough in this thread. That is the reason why I don't shy away from recommending those. Again it was more of a push back towards what majestic said than me trying to recommend it to anyone, but that is not to say that I do not recommend it.1 point

The fifteen minutes of pure anime melodrama terror and pain that I sat through after you recommended it to me a couple of years ago says YES! ...No, wait, I mean no: "bad" is subjective. But would I blindly recommend it without giving some idea of what kind of film it is while just saying "it's a masterpiece of animation"? No, no I would not. Now while I know how you feel about these kinds of films, I don't think I've ever heard KP much mention them in either a positive or negative light, so I think the warning is apropos. If that's the kind of film one is in the mood for...well, that's fine.1 point

Increased defenses will, most of the time, reduce the duration of afflictions. Good defenses can prevent crit (+50%duration) and downgrade hit to graze (-50%duration) ; high defenses can make the afflictions to miss, but in PotD enemies have increased acc. It is the most efficient strategy imo for Forbidden First, good defenses and good hit-to-graze conversion. Resistances to afflictions is useful and "easy to get", generally the tiers3 afflictions are very tedious to have. Immunities prevent any correspondant affliction to hit, so affliction doesnt remove your related inspiration . Since it is not commun in game to get immunities, this point is good to see on equipment building (if you want to use chanter as interrupting AoE-per3s build with energized, the Effigy's Husk is a good tool ; later in game, food are also nice). For your last question, enemies "investigate" when surpised by somtehing like a spell, so casting long-lasting spell like Chillfog or Pull of Eora nearby enemies (but not on them) can be considered as free-spell if the spell is refreshed (not in combat) before this last hit (or another attack hit).I hope I am clear with my text!1 point

yeah, i think if the game had sold better up front, we'd have gotten a longer support cycle and probably some revisions to the early nerfs. i think it's also unfortunate that we completely cut off any potion effect scaling, because some potions really need the additional scaling to be effective (the +8 defense vs afflictions for example is utterly useless imo; the +2 to some stat potions, which are pretty much obsolete by the longer-lasting +3 to stat drugs), but it definitely would take a lot more design time to manually tweak those specific cases versus a wholesale "no more scaling" decision, additional staff time they probably couldn't justify based on initial sales.1 point

I remember pre-patch 1.2, when alchemy was increasing poison & potion & drug PL, a simple Plague of Insects (Poison) was enought to close most of the encounters in solo ! I throught pre 1.2 was too strong but really nice in theory : I liked the idea of Skills giving some bonus with spells/abilities (like Arcane Archer) and that the active effects from potions and drugs depending of the ability to use them. But instead of reworking them to balance purpose, they simply turned off in many way the influence of Alchemy. For potions and drugs, now only affect duration and healing done (excepted with the potion of Cleansing Purge) and poison KW from spells or abilities are now (in vanilla) useless, even from the spider silk robe (+2PL for poison KW). The poison I like is the Storm Toxin, because 1. I like storm, and 2. the per 6s paralyse effect is auto-hit, and even if that doesnt really hardCC an enemy for the poison duration, the repeated interrupt that cause is a good reason to sacrifice the long casting time the poison have, I mean in combat.1 point

if you're open to doing ranger again, have you tried a stalker? the bonus deflection and armor, on top of beast's claw later on (requires a bit of metagaming) can make the ranger surprisingly tanky. since you get the most important effect by tier 6 (beast's claw), you can multiclass with something that can boost the damage output some more (for example, i did furyshaper and got bored by how easy mode it was) edit: if you're curious about ranger and druid again, a stalker + shifter would be reeeeeally powerful, probably way more easymode than my stalker + furyshaper. a shifter boar would be able to do tons of damage, while the bonus AR and deflection would keep you extremely safe in shifted forms while being very fast. and you can spell cast with stupid accuracy when you're not shape shifting.1 point

Thank you Boeroer! I've lurked your posts in the last 2 years and I learned so much from you! There is another player who posted video of a Solo Druid against bosses before me, from whom I took inspiration for some battles: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yHz0pI8cxRg But, after that, I tried to do the fights without figurines and any useful scrolls (confusion and paralysis i.e.). Another Druid build (I go crazy for Druids ) that maybe a day I will run is a "Berath" Druid, Death Godlike, corrode damage by wildstrike and weapons, touch of rot from items and appropriate talents Thank you again, have a nice day1 point

The worst is probably how this will be used in propaganda now. Inb4 "russia says the truth and must be believed since they have full access to command data." /Edit: And if they really would still have access to the system, they probably wouldn't talk about it in public.1 point

Here is non-computer translated English version https://news.yahoo.com/butusov-says-russian-claims-ukraine-170400235.html It seem that attack occurred in August. Ukraine was able to do successful counter offensive in Kharkiv after the breach, so it maybe that Ukraine's surprise re planning of their counter offence was because of this data breach. Russia seems to have published data about their attack just to spread doubt in Ukraine troops and increase morale of their own troops1 point

True, but that's why it's an analogy; it simplifies the thought process by using a figurative comparison. I'd say it is a fair simplification though, as Russia also has only figuratively stolen Europe's gas. (I've said before what my opinion is of the energy suppliers making windfall profits breaking contracts- it's... not great. And in that case I was pretty sympathetic to Europe because the context there was the US was demanding more aid to Ukraine from Europe, while making 600% mark ups on gas supply. Not really any solidarity being shown in that case, and if the US wants more aid from Europe more money would definitely be available if they weren't being gouged by the US on energy pricing. But ultimately, still not those 3rd world countries fault, and their gas is still going because of something Europe could avoid doing if they really wanted to)1 point

Grounded just keeps getting better. Here's a few suggestions... 1. A better glider. The dandelion tuff is great for tier 1 but an upgraded glider something akin to an actual glider would be fantastic. 2. I've seen several awesome suggestions for bugs. Butterflies, (for the glider wings?), grasshoppers, (bouncy shoes, anyone?), Dragonflies (though I'm thinking more of a "Dragonrider thing" than an enemy) 3. Speaking of shoes I still maintain that shoes and pants aren't the same thing, but aside from bouncy shoes having some kind of sticky shoes made from either ants or gum would be amazing. Not so sticky that you could walk up a wall necessarily but maybe you could climb some slightly steeper stuff than you can now. 4. Also the broodmother gives you a helmet and the termite king gives you a chest plate. We need one more epic boss type that gives you some sort of epic pants/shoes. 5. As I stated in another post and others have said, the ability of flying insects to swarm around like they do makes them an extra large pain so having the ability to "lock-on" to a target would help or if not that then some sort of spiked shield that would help kill them.1 point

Rewatched a couple of the early season one Cardcaptor Sakura episodes due to a colleague now watching the series. Episode seven remains a fantastic piece that showed how great the resolutions of the magical 'fights' can be and just how well everything is set up. Such an impeccable, low stakes show - at least, until the point where they tried their hand at being more epic near the end of the series and failed a little, even if the second arc / third 'season' contain the two strongest episodes of the series. Sailor Mercury is a hoot as Kero too. In the end, aside from having a unique approach to the fighting in magical girl shows, the series stays close to genre convetions and standard tropes, including an incredibly obvious future boyfriend setup, but it does trod off the beaten path every now and then, and it does everything so incredibly well it is barely believable at times, and it will only get better from this episode on, until the end of the first arc.1 point

And updates deleting the workgroup policy that hard enforces that. am thinking is all too easy to focus on symptoms as 'posed to causes. the ad is predictable misleading and vile, but the bigger issue is the recognition ads such as these, which for decades woulda' instant drawn condemnation from the leadership o' both political parties, resonate with a large % of white american voters, and hershel walker. most people is gonna condemn such ads, but the white republicans who know better are complicit 'cause they need the base if they is gonna regain control o' Congress and eventual the Presidency. since Gromnir were a wee lad, stephen miller's channeling o' calvin coolidge's ghost and the attendant nativism o' the early 20th century woulda' resulted in outrage from almost everybody willing to speak public on such matters. yeah, david duke and the like would nod appreciative at the blatant racism, but nobody worth mentioning wanted to be publicly associated with white supremacists, anti-semites and the like. nevertheless in 2022, oathkeepers and proud boys is fixtures at gop events, and their presence in numbers on january 6 and at charlottesville as well as similar loci o' infamy is hardly deserving a mention as such has become commonplace. am knowing some o' the liberals on the board see little difference 'tween robed klansmen and ordinary heartland americans who vote republican. unfair. the thing is it ain't near as unfair as it were twenty or even fifteen years past. working class americans angry 'bout the fact their manufacturing jobs were disappearing and that even if they had a job it were getting tougher every year to make ends meet, were increasing susceptible to the venom and snake oil being peddled by the likes o' rush limbaugh and steve bannon. ok, but why and how do we fix the problem? being outraged at limbaugh is swell and all, but he is dead and while bannon and miller is alive, internet vitriol directed at those folks only cement the faith o' the radicalized white voters who see lib condemnation as proof o' the righteousness o' their ill-defined cause. a large % o' white and working class americans voted for obama. that don't mean those voters were free o' the taint o' racism, but it did mean that their racism were less significant than their desire for change and they did indeed embrace a positive message o' hope: yes we can. am mentioning 'cause in a relative brief period o' time, a large % o' white voters were radicalized to the point they see democrats as more o' a threat than white supremacists, anti-semites and politicians active bent on overthrowing american democracy. serious? the advert is repugnant, but am thinking is far more important to focus on why so many salt-o'-the-earth, evangelical and white voters turned to the dark side. gonna need to look for ways to deprogram the willful embrace o' hate by the multitude and somehow convince 'em what should be oblivious-- that reflexive compare january 6 to the blm summer protests o' 2020 and/or vote for kari lake and herschel walker is something they never woulda' considered fifteen years past and is obvious wrongs. medicine dan and the like didn't wake up one morning realizing that democrats and joe bidden o' all people represented an existential crisis. is no way they thought it were okie doke to embrace proud boys, oath keepers and stephen freaking miller as brothers at arms, fighting the good fight to save america. identify stephen miller and his message as being bad is ez and is not particular constructive. the hard part is understanding how things became broken and to come up with practical solutions to fix what is broken. admission: we don't have solutions other than education. 'course the problem is education takes a long arse time to provide results and even so, the current gop is focused on undermining any kinda education which might fix the problems. HA! Good Fun!1 point

Now, not having been on the forums for very long, I cannot say whether your analysis is correct when it comes to this particular question and these particular people. But the more general human truth is that changing long-held beliefs and convictions can be extremely hard(*). As strange as it may sound, this can be a problem even in the realm of science. I mean, after all, it was Max Planck who said that the progress of science advanves one funeral at a time. Or more precisely: “A new scientific truth does not triumph by convincing its opponents and making them see the light, but rather because its opponents eventually die, and a new generation grows up that is familiar with it.” My (limited) understanding is that if you want to change a bad habit, for instance, you're likely to need at least six months or persistent daily practice. Never get discouraged at the start: it is going to take a long time, and it's good to know this. (*) Quite possibly even at the level of the physiology of the brain. I mean, memory and convictions are physical reality: synapses and engrams and all that, encoded and embedded in the brain. But this is conjecture, because we know so little about this stuff. But it's interesting how the brain holds the qualities of both rigidity and plasticity at the same time.1 point

Yes, its logical to come to that conclusion. But many of these guys have for years had certain " anti-Western " ideological views and they have been discussing these grievances for years. They based some of their views on geopolitical events like Bosnia and Iraq where you can criticize the West in certain valid ways And Russia was seen as somehow being the antithesis to the " evil, Capitalism West " and to them provided a " better " system. But they ignored the rising and constant militancy and hegemony from Putin during the years because there issues with the West was greater But when Russia invaded Ukraine and demonstrated everything, and worse, that they said was dysfunctional and wrong with Western " imperialism " it shattered there narrative and what some of them have believed for the last 10- 30 years or so And I can imagine how jarring this must be. Suddenly Russia was the liar, the warmonger and doing everything they claim made the West the bad guy And some of them have accepted this new reality but many haven't. Thats another reason why they seem to spend time defending Russia or ignoring things like blatant war crimes and atrocities. They just cant accept their ideological views have been turned upside down A simplistic analogy is you find out your parents arent your parents anymore, they actually stole you from someone else. It hard to accept and how do you emotionally respond....lots of things to consider ( and again its not the same but its similar )1 point

For me, the most interesting phenomenon is the Westerner who lives in a Western society and is extremely cynical about it, often expresses some measure of sympathy and understanding of anything that countries like Russia do and never fails to bring up the injustices of the West. A person like this isn't necessarily a troll, a conspiracy theorist or someone who has swallowed the propaganda. It can be something else as well. This baffles me somewhat. Now, I am not blind to the injustices of the West, which are indeed obvious and manifold. But to constantly bring them up in a discussion expressly dedicated to the Ukraine conflict is just odd, especially if there is a simultaneous dismissal or denial of what Russia is constantly doing. I have seen rather a lot of this during this conflict, in many places.1 point
-
@BruceVC: Russia employs a huge army of trolls whose job is to produce this stuff on social media. It's quite an interesting phenomenon; there's a big "troll factory" in St. Petersburg, for instance. Of course it's also very sad: imagine having a job doing that. All the things you could do in your life and with your life... and you'd end up doing that. So soul-destroying (whether you believe in souls or not). As an extremely stark comparison: I'm now engaged in a fairly big work project concerning the Congolese gynecologist and fairly recent Nobel prize winner Denis Mukwege. It is uplifting just to know that there are people doing the stuff that he does, and get to know the history of it. It brings more sunlight into the world.1 point

That iBuyPower system is like buying a 5-to-7 year old upper-midrange machine today, realistically, never mind that the parts themselves are two generations old at this point. Actually it'd perform almost the same as my old 6700K + 290X system from circa 2015 that I just retired. I'd be aiming a bit higher, especially since you'll have no upgrade path with this and have a stated desire for it to last five years. I'd aim for something like this as a baseline of a value build: CPU: Ryzen 5600 (non-X) or Intel i5 12400F Motherboard: B550 for AMD and B660 for Intel RAM: 2x8GB DDR4 3200MHz CL16 (or 3600MHz CL18, almost identical performance) Video: RX 6600 Storage: 1TB NVMe SSD or some kind PSU: 550-650W is more than plenty Case to taste Tossed together a sample PCPartPicker list using only Amazon and Newegg parts because I don't know other US stores. Alan Wake I know that a version of Alan Wake was released, but I choose to ignore that abomination that consists of little snippets and crumbs picked from their original, grand vision. Alan Wake was supposed to be a psychological thriller set in a fully open world with 100% dynamic lighting and weather effects. It was also supposed to be fully physics based, meaning that trees could fall over, rocks could be moved, buildings destroyed and so on. Check the trailer above, especially the super low quality footage at the end (the tech demo), and weep over what could have been and try to erase from memory what it actually became.1 point
