The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent (2022) A ways back when I posted the teaser for this film, I expected it to be a whole lot of things. Fun, stupid, over the top. Nicolas Cage playing himself, what else could it be. Apparently he turned down the role three or four times before taking it. I don't know if that means he should be given the credit I wanted to give him for being able to make fun of himself or not, but that's besides the point. I expected this to be the most fun I had with a film in a while. A longer ways back, my expectations of a film were wildly subverted. The difference is, with The Last Jedi, I expected a bad Empire remake, and I got a movie that made me think Attack Of The Clones was a good idea, and nothing ever should make anyone feel like that. Here I expected good things in a certain way, and expectations were once again subverted. Except in a good way. Out of all the things I expected of this film, it being a legitimately good movie was definitely not among them. Funny that, but somehow, it is. It's well executed, the actors are all delightfully into and great in their roles, particularily Pedro Pascal who is just the best. Hell, there's a digitally de-aged, super creepy Nicolas Cage appearing every now and then who is giving his hammiest performance, and as a bonus, Cage actually says "not the bees" in the film. The film just works in every way. As a silly comedy, as a Nicolas Cage action film, and as an adult character drama. Yes, this is partially a meta joke, but not entirely. It really is all that, in a nice package that's good looking, and it certainly deserved more than not even making its budget back at the box office. Looks like Nicolas Cage's handler was right in the film. There simply is no place for adult character dramas without mass appeal any more. I guess the action at the end was too little, too late, or the film was too much of everything and delightfully meta at the same time for most. I don't know. All I know is that I expected this to be the most fun I had with a live action film in a while, and that was true - and it was also a good deal more. If anyone of you liked 7 Psychopaths, give this a try.6 points

Whirling Strikes, Heart of Fury and WotW let you attack with both hands, whatever you hold. That's why Whirling Strikes can be used with a ranged weapon in left hand and even benefits from Driving Flight.2 points

Cleaned out a clogged downspout on one of my gutters. Well I guess I should say I asked a buddy to do it. The downspout in question is 23' high, and my extension ladder is 24', but around 12' up I noped out and we switched spots. It took ramming a running garden hose through the downspout but finally a huge mass of leaves and debris came out like a play-doh extruder. It was so satisfying to see.2 points

I discovered recently that Xefa's Empirical Explication can add up to 12 resonance stacks per attack - it can proc knock back and prone on crit which are also considered weapon attacks (and can also trigger Avenging Storm). FF monks using WotW can use blunderbuss + melee weapon to gain easily 2 hostile effects (Powder Burns + Unwieldly from Hilea's Talons). With 30+ resolve, Ring of Solitary Wanderer, Strand of Favor and Clarity of Agony their durations is close to 2s and you can generate wounds between two WotW.2 points

I'm sorry but I can't really alleviate your concerns here. The emotional core of the film, i.e. Nicolas Cage being aimless, his carreer not going where he wants, his problems with his teenage daughter and the part of the film that's just a buddy movie with Pedro Pascal, that might work - but the film basically starts off with assuming the viewer is familiar with Nicolas Cage on some level. That is actually a fair amount of the films 105 minute runtime. Then there's the rest of it. Spoilers: Some of the jokes - well, many of them - require at least a passing knowledge of Cage films. In this way, the film comes with the same downside that Jean-Claude van Johnson came with. It's absolutely brilliant in its meta jokes and how it treads the ground between being fully serious in a ludicrous way and over the top satire. However, unless one is familiar with the subject matter, it might prove to be a little impenetrable and fall short.2 points

Upgraded my CPU form R7 1700 --> R7 5700X. Basically +50% in frequency under load and not that far off in IPC too. Managed to resist the temptation to go totally bonkers and get a 6900XT and new PSU at the same time. Good fun with the DRM too. New BIOS obviously has fTPM enabled by default, and it didn't like having a new CPU...2 points

The prologue is dark, I mean really really dark. I don't just mean the tone of the story, I mean visually it's really dark. So much so that I was tempted to crank the brightness setting on my TV (I didn't). The oppressive darkness and Laura's feeble phone flashlight work really well with the atmosphere. Holy **** it's Ted Raimi! This game has the best facial animations I have ever seen in a vidya game, and it's not even close. It's comparable to LA Noire in how much better the facial animations were compared to everything that had come before it, The Quarry is a similar leap forward 11 years later2 points

I do like quite a few of the classes, but some I've only used once admittedly. - Top five for me so far, in no particular order, are Fighter, Boxer, Chef, Valkyrie and Duellist. Versatile and no obvious weaknesses that make me wish I'd taken something else. - Barbarian, Lancer, Ronin and Assassin are a step below in my experience so far. A common theme between them is that their regular weapon attacks are a bit unusual, more than just the super responsive see-thing-hit-thing of the above classes (except Chef who is a bit slow). - I've played the ranged classes the least so take my opinions on them lightly. I had an awful time (once each) with the extraordinarily gimmicky duo of Pirate and Bard. Mage is disappointing because they have no defining characteristic and you may as well just play Astromancer who is simply a better mage. Ranger and Gunslinger are the two classes in the game where you have to aim every shot, and I don't have the patience to play like that at the moment. For context I've just taken down the fifth boss, so I've now seen all the regularly accessible zones.1 point

@Mamoulian War I forgot to link earlier this segment, which broadly and indirectly explains why there will be no ramp up of production in oil/gasoline in US and by extension in the broader West. Those dimwit politicians and their opinion is not worth the paper they write it on or tape they are recording on (and in the current age, that says a lot)1 point

I have not see Paddington 1/2, which on top of not having see this film either, I really just don't have the right context to understand what you mean, . Nicholas Cage doesn't seem to be in either, so I'm struggling to see the connection...1 point

Thankfully no. I have a large Birch tree in the back yard and it drops these seed pods like crazy: The downspout was almost 100% clogged with these.1 point

possible the most fascinating aspect o' knorozov's translation efforts is that it likely were only possible 'cause o' the academic isolation o' the soviet union. for all intents and purposes, the book on the mayan language had been written, and the world's most respected academics had come to agreement that mayan were a pictograph language with each symbol representing a word or concept. there were a brit scholar (thomas? thompsen?) who were THE guy regarding the mayans and his conclusions and process were taught to all other western linguists. an academic dead-end were created by THE guy being wrong. soviet scholars didn't have the slavish devotion to thomas/thompsen and they didn't risk humiliation or loss o' tenure by publishing works with contradictory conclusions. am not certain what yuri's exposure to contemporary western scholarship amounted to, but were almost happenstance yuri's groundbreaking efforts were known in the west before the end o' the cold war, 'cause for the most part soviet academic publications were not translated and promoted beyond the iron curtain in the 1950s. that said, am thinking the quirky cat co-author stuff is a bit more amusing and likely more memorable. HA! Good Fun!1 point

Are you sure full attacks work with ranged+melee? For most rogue full attacks at least, dual wielding ranged and melee means you will only ever use one of them.1 point

I need to address a problem come up repeatedly on the forum and it needs to be fixed ASAP. Whenever you try to play multiplayer it requests you sign in. Well it automatically has an email you signed up with and when you click on the little arrow to change it, it takes you back to the main menu instead. The problem is that it usually signs in automatically and I can't remember the password I've used for it. I have a different email that I want to use which has most of my other games linked to it. I bought this game specifically to play multiplayer and I've been unable to play for almost a year. The problem with xbox live microsoft password recovery is that it's a lengthy process that asks you irrelevant questions and needs to be "reviewed". It's been over 6 months and multiple submissions and I have still not received any response. Please devs, FIX THIS ASAP, we PAID FOR YOUR GAME and now there are some of us who can't fully enjoy the full experience. We need to be allowed to change the email without it automatically just taking us back to the main menu or at least lets us sign in with alternate emails.1 point

To be honest I would love that. I firmly believe that when war is inevitable, it is better to fight that war sooner rather than later (or more specifically, on our terms rather than on the other side's terms).1 point

@Darkpriest Found this one yesterday, and I have noticed, that we all are forgetting, while posting doom and gloom, about the impact of high food prices on relationship between Russia and China. Looks like the biggest exporter of wheat to China was actually Ukraine, and the soaring prices of food in China are much much higher domestic security problem, than soaring prices in the West. And this might force China to make some unexpected move. So the attrition war planned by Putin, might completely destroy his cooperative relationship with China, before affecting the West to much.1 point

Sievierodonetsk is pretty big mess with or without propaganda from both sides. Of course the Ukraine is Outgunned there, as Russia put in Donbas 50% of all soldiers in Ukraine, despite that, I would not say that Ukraine counteroffensive was messy at all. They tactically retreated from city, and Russia being "happy" for easy victory, with probably most of their soldier being on vodka, the next day Ukraine obliterated them, including one whole tiktok kadyrov unit. They just shelled the hell out of them by artillery from Lysychansk, which is on high ground. Then they stormed the units in chaos, fully knowing, that they will have to retreat in day or two again back to the Insustrial quarter of the city. Unless Russia takes down Lysychansk as well, the same stuff will be probably repeating next few days/weeks.1 point

Quote for the DAy: Ok so let me get this straight. The #1 movie in the country is Top Gun, the #1 song is Kate Bush “Running up The Hill”, and America is in a proxy war with Russia? So we’re just like “**** it, let’s give 1986 another go then?”1 point
