  1. Finally the best youtube channel, I follow, which covers the war for Ukraine, started to cover it in English. It is the channel of Austrian Army, so it is very professional, and neutral channel, which covers successes and failures of both sides equally. A lot of the info I have shared in the past, was based on their assessments. If you know German language, and want to have more detailed and unbiased look on what is going on, I really recommend to watch some of the past videos, as well. And another looks at why Russian Army under-performs so much, by another guy, which I find has very good research behind his videos. Beware, it is 1 hour long video

  7. I am not huge fan of nationalism myself but idea that social surrounding we live in is not at least partially affected by our ancestors which as group decided on set of morals they followed (eg, national identity per say) is false. Thats why states and nations are different from each other even if the structure holding it together is same. Hence Nationalism can be good and bad

  8. Yeah, even though I am anti-monarchy and very strongly republican (note small 'r'), I have a lot of respect for Elizabeth II. She was only a teenager when she was crowned, upon the very sudden death of her father with whom she was traveling at that time. I'm good with all the accolades and well-wishes she is receiving.

  9. Kill them with extreme prejudice of course... Not blaming Ukrainians for defending their home. Blaming people for starting wars for "their country". Defending your home and your family isn't quite the same (I think). Edit: I.e. I would wage war against Russia because of my hatred of what Putin is doing to other people, not because of some flag I'm supposed to feel somehow represents me. I.e. tangible reasons over symbolic reasons.

  10. and don't forget their weird fascination with puzzles. enigma? most o' oner's complaints is gonna be echoed by other gamers to greater or lesser degrees. we personal enjoyed wotr, but am not gonna try and convince anybody owlcat is a great developer. is also the politics angle which might offend people. with owlcat doing a warhammer 40k game, is more than a few legit concerns. furthermore, am thinking a warhammer 40k crpg is gonna be tough for any developer to get "right," 'cause in our experience, most fans do not view similar to Gromnir... most fans don't view as does games workshop. The Imperium Is Driven by Hate. Warhammer Is Not is a good argument you need a particular deft collection o' writers to strike the right balance so as not to offend many 40k fans and still remain true to 40k. owlcat is such a developer? HA! Good Fun! ps am personal trying to think positive, but is not in our nature to do so.

  12. Nah, there's still plenty of issues with personal decisions. There's a lot of extra fun stuff going into stuff like learned helplessness to boot. Plenty of lack of understanding for even how things like progressive tax work and as such make objectively poor decisions under the incorrect understanding of that system. It's basically the intertwining of macro and micro level models of psychology/sociology. But like some people are sociopaths and want to see the world burn and care not for pesky laws. Some people think that if a husband and wife each pay 25% tax then the household is paying 50% tax. Some of this can be addressed and remedied. Societies are the sum of their individuals, and individuals exist within their societies. It's not trivial to unpack. Overwhelmingly our culture imposes the idea of personal responsibility for one's woes though. It's implicit in reverse, where there's the idea that if someone has a statue of them, or if they're rich, it's probably because they did something worthwhile to do so. In essence, we like to presume an implicit rationality to a system made up of actors that demonstrate repeatedly that they are often very irrational.

  19. Greyhawk was the setting I played the most during my P&P days simply because it was the default D&D setting at the time. Then somebody in our circle got the Al-Qadim rulebook and I was hooked because I LOVE anything to do with Arabian Nights, it's my second favorite setting behind only Wuxia. It's been a woefully underutilized setting ever since Prince of Persia went the way of the dinosaur.

  21. Link to the run => Ultimate Run Introduction: I've been trying the ultimate since summer last year. From the release of PoE:II I was infatuated with the ranger class, and it was the first Single Class i beat solo PotD difficulty on and the theory crafting started from there. The main benefit to ranger is also its biggest downside. The pet. So the first thing that had to be solved was how to deal with the downsides. One of them being the stealth sections, where it's not only you who has to stealth through them but your pet has to as well. Another one is that, when your pet dies, you get a nasty debuff wich lowers your accuracy and resolve. There is no argument that other classes, with no pet, are the safer pick for this challenge. And there are many ways to approach any given situation in the game. But the upsides of having a pet far outweighs the downsides of having one, especially when paired with a Soulblade Cipher. Starting Build: Race: Wood Elf Class: Cipher (Soulblade) / Ranger (no subclass) Might: 16 Constitution: 10 Dexterity: 11 Perception: 20 Intellect: 12 Resolve: 9 Culture/background: The White that Wends / Hunter Weapon Proficiency: Club / Medium shield (Heater) Pet: Boar I think this build is possible with any race, but most optimal would be the ones that give you a bonus to perception cause this build relies heavily on accuracy. So either Elf or Orlan, but Orlan has -1 to might. And might being the second biggest focus of the build, i opted for Elf cause i'd rather have a bonus to perception without the penalty to might. We are getting more accuracy buffs throughout the game than might ones. The other race bonuses are verry minor in the long run, cause i tried most of them, and in the end the change was barely noticeable. Same for culture, there we take another +1 perception, again accuracy will be needed. Hunter background provides us with +1 in alchemy/mechanics/survival. This one is mostly picked for the mechanics, there's alot of lockpicking in the first sections of the game. As far as weapon proficiency goes, it doesn't really matter, we are going a monastic build. There is an argument to be made for clubs, wich lowers the targets will, and lets you land your debuffs more reliably. But the switching weapons downtime always felt really clunky to me so i did not really use it. Pet wise i think boar is best suited for the run, cause of the free regen between deaths. The Class combo : Seer (Soulblade/Ranger) It is with this class combo, that the rangers biggest downside, becomes it's strongest asset. Before, you dreaded your pet dying. Now, you want it to die. Alot. The soulblade passive : Gains "Soul Annihilation" ability: A soul enhanced melee strike that consumes the cipher's remaining power pool and converts it into Raw damage on the target. Shred cipher spells cost less Focus. Downing an enemy with a Melee Weapon temporarily grants Concentration and raises Max Focus. So whenever we kill a "target", we grow our focus pool, wich in term means a bigger hit. We already have a target, our pet, we can kill however many times we want. Now we only need to extend the duration of the buff itself, for that we use Cabalist's Gambason and Strand of Favor to prolong the buff, so we can keep our high focus pool and therefore our big burst. There's three points in the run where i buff up by downing the pet. The first time to a 100 stacks, the second time to 1000 stacks, and the third time to 2000 stacks. Wich gets us a starting focus pool of 250, 2500 and 5000 respectively. The dmg is not a 1:1 conversion it's hard to say how it does but i think it does 2/3s of the current focus pool as damage. What also could make it hard to gage how it determines damage, is the fact that when you have 1000+ base focus, when you use Soul Annihilation, it doesn't dump your focus completely as it says in the tooltip but only a -1000. So when you have 250 base focus, you have one big punch, at 2500 you have 3 big punches, and at 5000 you have 5 big punches. Is what it comes down to, that's why damage and accuracy is what the build will focus on most. The way this build approaches fights that have to be fought is to identify the biggest threats, focus them down fast with our big punches, and then just control dps down the rest. And it all comes together with all the ranger and cipher spell kits. Abilities and Passive tree Ranger Abilities: Marked Prey, Heal Companion, Evasive Roll, Concussive shot, Concussive Tranquilizer. Cipher Abilities: Valerous Echoes, Recall Agony, Psychovampiric Shield, Pain Block, Borrowed Instinct, Echoing Shield. Passives: Monastic Unarmed Training, Penetrating Visions, Biting Whip, Hammering Thoughts, The Empty Soul, Resilient Companion, Uncanny Luck, Improved Critical, Tough, Survival of the fittest. Everything revolves around landing your big punches at the start of a fight, most fights not all ( Belranga, and sigilmaster for example). So we have to know wich enemies in the group are major end running threats and focus them down first. And this kit helps you in doing so. We can buff ourselves with Borrowed instinct and Psycho vampiric shield, wich also simultanously debuffs the enemy. We can get extra accuracy on the target by flanking it together with the pet, and Marked prey. We also get a boost from our passives. So the go to strategy is, debuff the target and buff yourself enough so you are sure to land your big hit and you have to, because when you miss you lose that focus. So the fight can go verry wrong if you miss enough times. We can keep our pet alive in the meantime with Pain Block and Heal pet, remove might based stuns with Valerous Echoes. Echoing shield is mostly used to strip enemies from their concentration, wich allows me to interupt them with Concussive Tranquilizer. Evasive Roll is used to position ourselves almost instantaniously close to target to be able to hit them. With this ability you can reliable take out dangerous targets fast even though they are far away from each other. Recall Agony is just icing on the cake with our damage, cause it redeals 30 percent of it, mostly used on big targets, however it is worth noting that when you auto attack a target with recall agony you will gain focus faster. Closing There's alot more to this build than the write up i did. Like what route to take to be on time, wich items to get and where, how to protect vela, etc but this is the core principle of the build for the ultimate. You can see the route and strategies in further detail in the actual run posted up top. 00 comments

  22. Also I forgot to answer one part of the question, she had here for some time some a friend from University, and other girl from the same University. But they moved few weeks ago to UK, because they both were directly for Mariupol, the second girl's father was even killed by Russians, despite they being at some point during this conflict in Crimea , so there was nothing left to return to for them back in Ukraine. Our "kid" wanted to go at first to UK with her as well, but her desire to finish her education won in the end. She sometimes met some other UA "kids" around the city, but she spent most of her time alone, as she was pretty big kind of introvert.

  23. Maybe I can clarify? The institutions a country upholds are a reflection of the people (will give a nod to those with greater power having more influence), while simultaneously impacting the people that live there. I don't think it'd be surprising to learn that opinions on gun ownership would be different among a group from USA compare to say, a group from the UK. And by the same token, I think it's obvious that if you take me, Allan Schumacher, and have me born and raised in a place like Texas that there's a good chance I'd grow up with a different opinion of fire arms than if I grew up in London, UK? Of course it can still be broken down by states, counties, and what have you. I'm just saying that people have an impact on the society they live in while that society also has an impact on the people that are raised there. This doesn't mean any population is homogeneous or anything either, or that the influences had are the same across different demographics either. Nor am I making a value judgment on whether said influences are good or bad or anything.

  24. The "systems/institutions" that a society are both made up by, and contribute to, the people that live within them. I'm not sure where you're getting the idea that I'm making a generalization about the United States people from this though. Perhaps you meant to direct your comment at Gfted? Again, my response is that systems/institutions are made up of the people within the country, and that those in turn feed back onto each other. I'm not even sure what you're asking. My post was in response to a flippant take that seemed keen on assuming that everyone just assumes it's "systems" (whatever he wants to mean by that) that cause issues and that it's never personal responsibility when that isn't true? I don't understand your post at all...

  25. I can't even get a Cappuccino for that But, as always, it needs to be held up against the average households purchasing power. When I first moved to New Zealand (almost 20 years ago), I used my own 'Beer Index' to compare prices in stores to how many beers it translated into and compared it with similar Danish cost in (Danish) beers for similar products. I only found out years later, that there was a similar, well known McDonald Burger index for price comparison.

  27. It depends. You get a 'fuel card' with every car that reduces the price a bit but there are a limited number of times you can use it every month. Now my fuel card hasn't arrived yet so I had to refuel(seriously though, how DO you refuel the car in Fallout 2 ) the car with the 'regular price' which was 750 000 rials for 25 liters. That's roughly two and a half dollars. So it's cheap I guess?

  31. Idealized youthful fantasy/tearjerker K-drama version: Kim Go-eun ,,,that's an interesting question tho, really, because as an adopted Korean-American I don't really "relate" to the vast majority of the actresses I see on screen (Hollywood or many East-Asian productions either) in terms of seeing a sort of reflection of myself. I don't mean that in a negative way (eg, it doesn't bother me, it can still entertain), and I don't mean simply racially/looks but also the personality and culture portrayals...and because of that I have zero notion of an actress that would be "good" at playing me. So ... uh ... any adult female under 5 feet who's broody, a little tomboyish, lazy as f*** and verbalizes curse words far too often would work.

  32. One of the most fun and relatively low micro party runs was with a berserker/devoted wielding Amra. You just need some chanters in your party to summon skellies. @Boeroerrecommended this build in this thread. It's loads of fun and very sturdy. Just make sure that the rest of your party is ranged, because anyone who gets too close in melee will be permanently destroyed with this build. Alternately, any caster is great in a party if you're not in the mood for melee. Also, @Not So Clever Houndposted a SC trickster build that's great in a party, but for some reason I cannot find it.

  34. what language do you speak with each other, I assume English? - (Slovak, Ukrainian, Russian, English - Ukrainian is in some way close to Slovak, but she is from Russian speaking family, and me and my wife learned Russian language at secondary school. I use mostly English, my wife mostly Russian) did the student have family who stayed in Ukraine or were her family also refugees - (they family stayed almost two month at home in Dobropillia in Donbas, after Russian Army moved away from Kyiv and started Donbas offensive, they moved to Krivyi Rih. Her brother is "available" for mobilization in Kyiv. So in the end, they are refugees, but they are still in Ukraine) who paid for the food and other costs and if you paid was it expensive - (We have 7 EUR a day reimbursement for 1 person from government, but the girl started to work 1 about 2 weeks after she moved to us, so we were sharing most of the costs, but more of the costs were of course on the side of me and my wife. I would not say that it was expensive, but I think some Slovakians with worse income than our family might consider it expensive) what did she use to do during the day, did she have friends and or other Ukrainians that she associated with - (First two weeks she tried to explore the city, then she started to work, and two weeks, before her leave, we bough her cheap guitar, so she spent a lot of time learning the instrument ) And then did your family get on with her? I know it sounds weird but what was it like, did she use to talk about the war? - (We tried to not talk with her at all about the war. Only very very occasionally when we were all outside and talking about all the stuff. My wife had pretty good relationship with her, but she did not talked much to me. She said that she does not understand my English, but you never know )

  36. i mean, patinated plate and the malus are all pretty bad. The streetfighter's recovery time bonus is very very good, but at some point it's just a cope, and not really excelling. it's very important to be precise about what kind of malus and bonuses you're talking about, because they undergo different interactions with inversions and affect different parts of your action. The malus on patinated plate is a recovery time penalty, not action speed malus. the ugly math - i'm converting all numbers to a single, unit-less measure. maluses (the larger the worse) patinated plate baseline heavy armor penalty +.55 patinated plate recovery penalty from "Bronze Juggernuat" + .20 bonuses (the larger the better) streetfighter "heating up" +1.0 (inverted from -50% bonus) dual-wielding baseline +.428 (inverted from -30% bonus) dual-wielding style bonus +.176 (inverted from -15% bonus) mirke's baseline dex +0 (only 10 dex, if the wiki is right) "swift strikes" +.15 total maluses: .75 total bonuses: 1.755 subtract malus from bonus => 1.005 it's positive, so treat it like an action speed bonus, e.g. add one and divide it from the recovery to determine the final number a 4s weapon recovery will become 1.995s (you'll see it as 2.0s in-game), and a 3s weapon recovery will become 1.496s (you'll see it as 1.5s in-game). so yes, you'll still be pretty fast (streetfighter's recovery time bonus can be thought of us "cancel out up to +100% in recovery time penalties"), but if you want to DPS you could be much much much faster by not bothering with patinated plate at all. or related to the topic at-hand, you could try a single-handed mirke with swashbuckler and light armor. combined with the upgrade on swift strikes that lets you get bonus attacks on crits, you could pummel down enemies real fast, if you have a reliable way of triggering heating up.

  37. Somewhat inspired by the thread title, who would play you in a movie about your life? Spent half the night discussing this with my wife because while it doesn't seem that complicated, and it's not, she kept throwing out fictional people she wanted to play her. Her picks were Jadzia Dax (not Terry Farrell) and Angelina Jolie though they look nothing like her and are just her girl crushes. My pick was Powers Boothe but he's dead and I'm not sure how comfortable he would be with the nudity required for the role.

  39. I actually miss different spells having their own distinct accuracies from the first game, it's just that in this case it's implemented in a bad way. It would be nice to have some options that are more reliable than others without having it be auto-hit like Thrust of Tattered Veils. Right now we only have the Chanter's stunning invocation, and some hidden negative modifiers in Binding Web/Pull of Eora and these PL bonuses. An accuracy bonus would also go a long way towards making certain extremely situational spells feel better, for example Concelhaut's Corrosive Skin. A single dice roll that you go all in on for a tier 9 spell feels bad.

  40. sounds nice but am calling bs. gd wants the water running through his property to be clean as well as the air he breathes to be less than lethal. manage that w/o government interference? he also wants the government to protect him if other and more powerful people (or more desperate, 'cause while power corrupts, powerlessness corrupts absolute) wanna take his stuff... and think o' all the stuff he wouldn't have save for the government, such as drivable roads 'tween wisconsin and tennessee, vaccines and the internet. etc. gd has a romantic notion o' world sans government interference, a fantasy based on some kinda jerimiah johnson movie setting which ignores how mr. johnson were as often as not struggling to survive the predations o' his fellow humans as well as the indifferent violence o' nature. most o' the other mountain men no doubt died young, painful and unmourned. you know where the rl jerimiah johnson died? a veteran's home in santa monica, ca. the government were taking care o' mr. johnson in his golden years 'cause the mountain man sh!te don't work so well once you hit senior citizen status. heck, life expectancy when jerimiah johnson were born were 29 years, which is misleading. the reason the number is less than 30 is 'cause in the late 1820s, like most o' history, a significant % (majority) o' children died before they reached adulthood. chances are w/o government and its benefits, gd wouldn't be alive much less posting on the internet. calling bs. gd wants his idealized minimalist government, but only in the candyland world he has imagined would exist where his fellow humans is compassionate and fair and mother nature ain't a b!tch goddess bent on his extinction. HA! Good Fun!

  41. My brother and I came back to check out the new content after being gone for several updates, and we immediately noticed there's now TWO wolf spiders living under the tree (and our magnificent treehouse base). Though tougher to kill than we remember, we axed both of them on the same day and continued trying out new features. Imagine our surprise when, at the dawn of the next day, two wolf spiders were again snoring menacingly under our fortress. Unless I'm wildly misremembering, it used to take around three days for a wolf spider to respawn after being killed. The current daily respawn rate is troublesome for two key reasons: zone control and immersion. If wolf spiders only take a day to respawn, building a base anywhere near a spawn point is a huge risk. Having a wolf spider permanently prowling around your under-construction base is going to result in frequent an frightening deaths, no matter how many times you squash them. That leads into the second point of immersion; when you conquer an apex predator, you should gain control of the area for a reasonable time. One of the foundations of survival games is imposing order on nature but if the nastiest enemies only stay dead till the next day it ruins that sense of taming the wilderness. Plus, regularly scheduled daily respawns of pretty much anything reduce the sense of playing in living world. I know creature respawn rate balance is probably low on the priority while new features still need to be created, but at least for the wolf spiders, please tone them down so its reasonable to build in the vicinity of their spawn point. Thanks!
