  1. Well I just found out that my time in my current job is coming to an end. I suppose I should’ve seen this coming because the amount of work that was being funneled our way was being dramatically reduced to about none for the last week. Can’t say the hand writing wasn’t on the wall. I have no desire to move to Nashville so I’m going to take the walk away package. Time to figure out what comes next.

  4. When I was a kid I remember seeing Sailor Moon advertised on toonami, but I never watched it and had no idea of what it was. I didn't get cable until I was a teenager, and all the anime I got was rented at the Blockbuster (I accidentally stumbled into the last part of Berserk that way, which is probably not the best thing for a kid to watch) and I was more drawn into Evangelion or b-movies. I did end up watching Sailor Moon the way all semi-ners american teenagers watched anime back in the aughts, which I won't mention for potential legal reasons. I don't remember Sailor Moon very well, which is par for me up till my early 20s, but I remember liking it better than Dragon Ball Z (and whatever came after). It's nice to come back to it with close to fresh eyes and I'm having a blast so far. I'd recommend it over hatewatching nuTrek or Doctor Who or whatever beloved franchise got animated into a mockery of what it once was, a vampire that feeds off your nostalgia to prop up a show that would fail on its own merits, most of the audience half-mesmerized into tuning in every week to an hour of cringe. I'm drinking a lot so excuse the wall of text. Lmao.

  5. You don’t have to buy the idea one hundred percent understand there is merit to be found in it. It doesn’t have to be all of one thing or all of another. Although that does appear to be the assumption people make around here at least when it comes to contrary opinions.

  6. never mind. If you happen to see what I posted here before I erased it please accept my apologies. It was uncharacteristically nasty and nothing that Gorth or any other who felt they were a target of my derision deserved. I’m just in a bad mood today I guess. Plus I am beginning to find these political discussions extremely tedious because they are so repetitive. It only took 15 years to get to this point.

  7. On Thursday I ordered a 5800X from Overclockers UK, and impressively it arrived today, with a public holiday in between as well. It's more than I had planned to spend on a CPU, but 5600X stock has completely dried up, and OCUK don't ship that overseas anyway (nor anything above the 5800X either). I could justify it because OCUK does not charge the 10% tax on behalf of the Australian government, and therefore the price ends up being a rather good $610AUD. This compares quite well to the MSRP of the 5600X which is $469, and the local 5800X at $699 (with street prices trending at $749). So with that done, I now have everything except the video card ready for my new build. Truthfully though, I can't be bothered building it right now if I have to transfer my existing 290X over, so they'll sit on the shelf while I decide what to do. It figures that just as I've made peace with the idea of spending $1200 on a 6800XT, the street price goes up to nearly $1400. So I'm pretty stuck at the moment. EDIT: Screw it, ordered a Sapphire 6800 Nitro for $1110 AUD. Don't want to age myself any further by overthinking it.

  14. well, that's the way it always is with any incremental change. it's not going to overpoweringly be obvious, but it will matter over the long term. same with with a random +1 PL here and there, or a +1 stat here and there, each individual won't be blindingly obvious, but will incrementally make fights easier, until you have enough of them and *then* it becomes obvious. on POTD though you might notice 1 PL a lot more, because -1 PL might be *just* enough to make you miss full penetration and get a -25% damage penalty, or worse, go from -50% penalty (sucks but you can try to knuckle through it) to -75% penalty (basically not worth doing, a further halving of your damage from -50%)

  16. Well, not going to post a lot of these since they're already all over the place, unless something extraordinary happens, but this is CP2077 on a GeForce GTX970 (on an AMD Ryzen 5900x, so the CPU certainly isn't a bottleneck), getting between 30 and 50 FPS. Would love to upgrade so I could get a stable 60fps but given the drama online I expected this to look like trash and be barely playable. So far it's been a pleasant surprise, at least on the graphical front.

  18. That's arguably true for economics generally, with Austrians being more upfront about it. One of the funnier things I remember about taking econ courses outside of 101 is how one of the first things we were told is to relax at least half of the assumptions made in theory to arrive at a framework that is close to applicable to real life.

  20. Yeah, it's garbage. Shilling should be in, so that's dumb. I mean he may not be a sympathetic character, and his temper tantrum is childish, but his career is what it is. Bonds and Clemens are two of the best players to play the game. They were also the best steroid users during the age of steroid use. It is dumb that they aren't in. The BBWAA is such a bizarre, out of touch organization. This doesn't help baseball. It hurts it.

  22. Or can we?????????? .....we can't, because my Steam profile is private and my avatar is The Monarch. Re artstyle: while I don't usually place a huge emphasis on it (heavy 3d cgi is the exception, I can't tolerate it much), it's understandable that it is a big factor for people. It is at least half the show when you think about it and can tank an otherwise decent show.

  23. It's just such a pain. This is where FNV really shines, imo. The quests are most of the time limited to a small area and if they send you somewhere else, then always with logic behind it. TES games (edit: and Bethsoft games in general) in contrast will send you to a stupid cave at the end of the world "just because". An example from house Hlaalu in Morrowind: Talk to quest giver in Vivec, he sends me to Caldera. The dude in Caldera will send me to Vivec. Once I am in Vivec, the guy will seriously send me back to Caldera. AND WHEN I AM BACK IN CALDERA, THIS GOD DAMN **** SENDS BE BACK TO VIVEC. And all I did in this questline was to click through dialog. Nothing else. It goes on like that ... Stupid quest design like this is the reason why we need god damn fast travel in every open world game now... because designers can't be arsed to come up with ideas that don't waste your time.

  24. Yes, exactly. This was such a great choice to not have Tuxedo Kamen come out of nowhere and defeat the illusions for the girls. They had to deal with it themselves, and they both do it in a way that perfectly fits their character. Usagi is just being Usagi and Ami initially tried to run away from the problem, but when cornered and pushed, figures out that something's wrong and knows that her friends would never betray her like that. This is one of the things that I was initially talking about in the way too long post earlier before I deleted half of it. It is similar to the main spoiler-hidden plot point about Sailor Moon S insofar as you know that in the end Ami isn't going to attack the others. You don't need to subvert expectations here. There's no need for Arya to do what Jon was supposed to do all along just because it's unexpected, or to be ridiculous about it like the the writers of Westworld who actually reshot certain episodes of season 2 because someone on reddit figured out the plot twist for the season too early (and as someone who has watched season 2 of Westworld and didn't like it, I would argue they reshot the episodes much to the detriment of the show's quality). I'll spoiler-tag the discussion of the themes present in S. I don't think it's too spoilerish because these things are obvious themes after the first handful of episodes, but look at your own peril (the second spoiler in the spoiler tag is an actual spoiler for the end of Sailor Moon S).

  26. Well I think art style is very important. One reason why I hate many animes is that I just loath this maid style stuff. Or this typical anime hair, you know. Over the last year I've watched *a lot* anime stuff. Like, really, feels like I am morphing into a weeb thanks to the Obsidian forums. And this only started because I've watched an anime that was *not* looking like your typical lazy and generic anime (it was Your Name, by the way. Probably the highpoint of all of anime. I keep searching for more like that, but I just can't get it anymore. This is how late-stage drug addicts must feel). Oh man, and there is more that I hate: - I hate anime with this ecchi stuff. Basically sexual scenes which are 110% censored. I'm here like, man, either show something or just skip this bs. - I hate harem anime. One dude and a group of girls who all are kinda into the dude, but the dude is constantly dodging all advances. Ugh. - I hate how every anime seemingly needs at least one child character. Bonus points if this child character appears in harem animes, because then it will always be sexualized in some form. Of course it is always tame stuff, but you just know what the intend is. Anyways ... long story short, I find it very hard to find enjoyable animes Maybe I should check out Sailor Moon.

  27. Also, Kaine, I have a friend on Steam that uses literally your exact avatar, has a drinking problem, is incredibly cynical, and is disappointed by everything. His name even starts with a K - it's very weird and disconcerting. He hates anime (although I think he watched and enjoyed Death Note), though, so you can't be the same people. (e): @majestic This Ami episode... (e): Wait, why did I spoiler it? You and Kaine have already seen this...

  28. I'm from Brazil so I can tell you what we had before. It was a leftist government that bribed the Congress to get things done and stole a lot of money. But, of course, each side of the political spectrum will only see the other as a threat to democracy. And yes, Bolsonaro got elected because of the rejection against the previous guys. Honestly, I don't have any hopes for the future of my country as people keep reelecting the same corrupt people over and over again. In Rio de Janeiro State they have arrested many former governors and the people still vote for them when they are candidates. In São Paulo it's even worse as they aren't even arrested.

  29. I finished watching Sailor Moon S (also known as Season 3). Prior to this rewatch I thought I began watching Sailor Moon in the summer of '97 when it moved away from a TV station that I barely paid attention to and changed from a weekly to a daily schedule, and that it was Sailor Moon R's Doom Tree arc that got me started. Turns out that was wrong, I'm pretty sure I started watching Sailor Moon some time after Sailor Mars joined, not with the Doom Tree arc. I'm not sure if the team was complete already. It might have been after episode 24, i.e. after Jupiter joins, but before Venus. Not that it really matters. What does matter though is that the TV station aired Sailor Moon, R and S in one go, with daily showings and an immediate re-run afterwards, and Sailor Moon Super S, which I'm about to start soon coming a year later then. So there was a major time gap in between seasons. What also matters in this context is that Sailor Moon S is, by far and large, the best of the seasons, and to make matters worse, the follow up Super S is easily the weakest. Now this doesn't say much because even in re-watching the show, having seen it all and being done with 127 (in words: one hundred and twenty seven) episodes the worst you get is an episode that's complete filler where a Chibi-Usa befriends a pliosaur, or one where she befriends a boy, or tries to, at least. Even those aren't bad. They're fun to watch and unlike, say, an episode of Deep Space Nine like Move Along Home or Let He Who Is Without Sin... or any Star Trek TNG episode where Wesley shows up they never tempt one to simply skip them. Even when its bad Sailor Moon just ends up being less good. Assuming one can get over it being anime. I know people who can't, and I get it. I tried a golly lot of times to actually get into South Park, but even though I find it generally amusing, I can't get over that art style. Or maybe the art style is just an excuse to not enjoy something that on a more rational level I know I should like but simply don't. I watched the entirety of BoJack Horseman in spite of loathing how it looks. However Sailor Moon can be an anime that even viewers who generally don't like anime can enjoy (exhibit A, our very own Bartimaeus here). The way the people are drawn is of course typical for Japanese animation, but the art style, directions and the characters involved are noticably different, at least from other animes of the time. Presumably that was in part a reason why the show became so popular later on, a fact that 15 year old me both hated and enjoyed with a passion. It meant losing a part of nerd counter culture to mainstream, but it also meant being able to interact with fans world wide online. Something Sailor Moon shared with X-Files, another mainstay of my adolescence. But I remember Super S having a few questionable story lines / beats. Main TL;DR from the wall of text here: I'm not sure I should immediately jump into Super S. I'll probably ignore my own advice and just go for it, but it would probably be better to let it rest for a while. On the other hand now that I've done almost a 180 on Chibi-Usa maybe... just maybe. *pulls out discs* Anyway, there are many reason why I think S is the best season, but mostly it was just really well written and directed, and I don't mean well written for an anime show about junior high girls in sailor suits fighting monsters. It's well written... period. Even more so when you think about how the writing team of what amounts to a low budget and mostly ridiculous anime adaptation in the 90ies managed to do here, create a plot driven by characters where actions take place and things happen because the characters involved are what they are, not what the plot dictates them to be. Yes, I'm looking at you Game of Thrones and Star Trek Picard... Plus the new Sailor Senshi get awesome theme songs:

  32. They complain about the First world nations monopolizing the vaccines, but there are some issues with that. Namely, the production rate and the delivery. They will need to ramp up production significantly in order to get enough shots in arms. Plus the initial batch have strict temperature requirements that will be hard to satisfy in many parts of the world. It may require something like the J&J vaccine with multiple production sites before we can start en masse injections. As it is, I don't feel too guilty about the First World hogging the vaccine. Without First World resources, expertise, and investment, a vaccine wouldn't have been ready for 2-3 years. Being the early beneficiaries also encourages investment in new vaccination technologies, which ultimately benefits everybody.

  34. Light of Eothas and Symbol of Eothas are good imo. The +15 to all defenses of the Symbol stacks with individual active defense buffs like Mirrored Image and so on. And the Light has 0.5 casting time. Also the Eothasian Incarnate was quite good because it's 3 dawnstar summons with quite good stats who cast several priest spells, including PL8+ spells (for example Symbol of Eothas). Unfortunately one of the summons is always stuck at casting and never finishes - but it can move and soak damage. If Priest of Eothas had a Spiritual Morning Star instead of a flail it would be my no.1 pick.

  35. That is not correct. Frozen vegetables go into the freezer right after the harvest. When defrosted they contain more vitamins and other nutrients than "fresh" vegetables you buy at the grocery store. Because those are usually not very fresh due to transport and storage time. This doesn't apply to vegetables you buy directly from the farm store (depends how long the vegetables lay there of course). https://www.health.harvard.edu/staying-healthy/fresh-or-frozen-produce-the-health-benefit-is-all-in-the-mix Also applies to fish and meat mostly. Freezing food leads to less waste, too. However it leads to more energy consumption. One thing that does suffer and which makes frozen vegetables less appealing to me is the altered texture - and sometimes also taste. Some products such as potatoes can't be frozen without making them unbearable - potatoes already start to taste bad under 4°C. That and the increased energy consumption are the reasons why I usually buy fresh products. But if I want to make stew or something like that then frozen stuff is totally fine because it's all mushy afterwards anyway. I also freeze products I grow myself like berries or herbs for example. Some I can dry (like rosemary). I'm the one who cooks in my family and I almost never have to throw away food. Not even the stuff we can't eat gets thrown away: Peels and stems, skin and bone etc. go to the rabbits and the chicken. Rabbits are the best speed composters I know. Two of them is enough to turn all of our household's vegetable/fruit waste into high quality fertilizer. Chicken just eat almost everything - even coffee grounds and tea leaves. What doesn't get eaten by the animals (which is very litte) goes onto the heap of compost. Mostly that consists of cut grass, citrus peels and leaves though.

  38. So a few days ago I've watched some of them animal / nature documentaries (Our Planet) on Netflix, and I have to say .... ... man, I ducking hate american-style documentaries. If I am watching a documentary, I don't want to just hastily consume. I want to take in fancy landscapes and learn new interesting facts and stuff like that, but american-style documentaries are always super fast, they cut all the time and jump around in different places and make up weird animal stories that (let's be honest) we all know are just made up based on available footage. It's like whatever they are showing can never be longer than 15 seconds and then they assume the watcher became bored of it. One episode was about desert / steppe and holy crap, they jumped the planet from left to right and it took most of my concentration to keep track of where exactly we currently are on earth. Felt like there was no red line, it just went from here to there and back again. The visuals are epic and super fancy, but the dramatic cuts and fast pacing just completely kill it for me. /rant over.
