Went ahead and bought the full version of 'Shadow of the Torture Porn Raider'. I love it, it really picks up after the demo area when you start romping through the jungle. It uses the RGB skill system which I love and offers plenty of optional tombs and other exploration discoveries. I have a high end PC and that also helps the graphical aspects which probably make it even better because it looks gorgeous on high settings.2 points

i'm honestly perplexed by this being the attitude of a self-described social/behavioral scientist. even biased or non-representative samples are useful if you know what the bias is, because you can adjust them with weights. this is what happens all the time with political polling or survey analysis because good luck getting a perfectly representative response rate. with (2) you would have to have a hypothesis that the nonresponse rate for people who did not like the game were different from the nonresponse rate for people who did like the game - and i mean the spectrum of weak to strong feelings; you may argue that people who are weakly negative on a game may be less motivated to write a review, but i don't see why this would be a different phenomenon from people who are weakly positive. frankly, i would be more concerned about user reviews not being representative if they diverged in any significant way from critical reviews, which they don't. hence why a lot of the recurring theories (and je sawyer's own statements to this effect) revolve around the assumption that people who did play deadfire generally really liked it, and so the issue is not really about what's wrong with deadfire per se and more about what would cause the audience to shrink so much (essentially a glorified funnel analysis from PoE1). Hence - things like setting, poor marketing, higher competition, satisfied nostalgia demand, etc. Many of us are trying to answer #1, and you seem to be trying to answer some variation of #2 and trying to rationalize it with a lot of other scaffolding which is honestly rather unconvincing. The theories that keep persisting are the ones that generally require us to do less discounting/rationalization of what data we do have. I mean, for example, P:K has way more mediocre reviews than Deadfire, but sold way better apparently.2 points

Effort: raw lash is good - but it doesn't stack like Bleeding Cuts do. Therefore not as good as it seems. During multiple tests with several two handed weapons on several different chars it didn't perform too well (e.g. compared to Willbreaker, Oathbreaker, Amra etc.). It's my go-to weapon for a Vengeful-Defeat Barb and sometimes on a wizard for his phantoms or for Shroud of the Phantasm. The additional attack on k.o. is fun and also works on summons. BotEP: good Ngati's Tusk: nice but too late for me to build a char around pikes. Unfortunately the other unique pikes on the way are not too exciting unless you build a char who can reliably get a plant or beast effect for unlocking Lord of the Forest on Lance of the Midwood Stag. Like a Barb/Druid for example.1 point

I'm so guilty. I sometimes oppose posters who want to start their forum career with a childish and irrational rant and then I insist on being reasonable. I know, I know: super lawful evil... Or I called out SonicMage when he used the words "fact" and "truth" every time he voiced his subjective opinion. But so did everybody else... so maybe Sonic doesn't count. But hey @xzar_monty - we clashed one or two times. Did you feel "put down" or "denigrated"? I mean I cried a bit but I got over it. I also disagree with @thelee from time to time. It's a miracle he's still here after all those nasty attacks I launched. He def. took Thick-Skinned or Stoic Steel. Or both...1 point

The usual monk is micro heavy. Especially Torment's Reach (which is the most powerful ability the monk has in my opinion) needs a lot of micromanagement to be effective. I once made a special disabler monk who was supposed to be run by AI mostly and who skipped Torment's Reach: It worked quite well.1 point

That's what I meant when I wrote that players don't know what the description means. And how could they? What you said would also be a reasonable interpretation. However my tests with Justice and the two flails (long time ago) indicated that it's a separate lash and the base dmg is unchanged. You can't see the separate lash in the combat log very often because it gets eaten up by DR most of times (there is no MIN dmg for lashes). But if you do high dmg per hit or attack enemies with low DR you can witness the second lash in the combat log. With Justice it's visible a bit more often since the base dmg of a great sword is higher than that of flails and thus the chance of the 10% lash to overcome 1/4 DR is higher. I don't think that mechanic ever changed.1 point

Don't you live alone in the ass-end of nowhere? It's easier to get along with people when you rarely have to deal with people. However, I have to struggle to keep my inner beheader in check when my neighbors decide to start tearing down walls in the weekend. Or when some **** cuts in line just because he thinks he can, and reacts badly when I have the audacity to object. Pond scum figures he can reuse workout clothes for an entire week, and never puts back whatever equipment he's used after he's done. Smoking in enclosed spaces where it's strictly forbidden just because there's no one around at that precise moment. Driving like Batman because traffic regulations are for chumps. You know, the works. Maybe it's because I'm getting old and cranky and pay more attention to these things but there seems to be an increasing erosion of common courtesy, civility and manners. And I'm pretty sure that the government has zero to do with any of it. They may circumstantially take advantage, and sustained, large scale violence is difficult without state‑level organization. But people not getting along is just a result of people being people, no need to appoint anyone to office.1 point

Ashen. I successfully reached the palace of Lathyrus and defeated the boss, the Shadow of the Ashen, thus retrieving the Human Heart. The palace itself was rather hard to navigate, just as the previous dungeon, but it also had some sort of sentries that would block the door until all enemies in the room are dead, in some cases it was possible to find another way. Fortunately, there was a checkpoint before the boss room. Though, I defeated the boss on the first attempt and proceeded to the final area (according to the map). It was dark, filled with water (like the Shrine of Amana in DS2) and those leaping homing things (no idea how they are called). I mostly ran and ignored them. There was no boss at the end of the area, but the Twin Hearts of Lathyrus (the things dropped by Amiren and the Shadow of the Ashen) were restored and the location of the Ashen was uncovered. With my weapon fully upgraded (Ash Infused +7), all town folks' journeys complete I attempted the final boss. The arena was in the cave I had found at the beginning of the game and assumed that it was either optional or meant to return later. The boss itself was much faster than Amiren or the Shadow and my companion often fell to his death during or after the first phase. I have not yet defeated the boss. Edit. Defeated the final boss. The key was a two-handed weapon (the Rotten Axe, in my case) and switching the boss' aggro between the companion and me, especially during the second phase.1 point

I thought the same as you but played multiple PotD runs with them now and they're so strong. Sure, if not doing a theme or min/max there's plenty especially tanky frontliners. Typically to get them really tanky you minimize Dexterity which limits there weapon damage, you can choose to rely more on retaliation which mean's maximizing might+con and not increasing Res or they will never hit you. I used very similar build to Monksterlash and just switched on/off the AI to let it use Swift Strikes and/or Torments Reach. If want it even simpler and not use AI i'd just focus on retaliation and debuffs, will just be relying on rest of group for damage. There's a lot of abilities that are strong and don't require management: 1. Swift Strikes / Torments Reach 3. Turning Wheel 5. Soul Mirror (if using AI then Swift Strikes / Torments Reach) 7. Rooting Pain (damage isn't great but its a passive and can interrupt) 9. Duality of Mortal Presence 11. Iron Wheel 13. Enervating Blows 15. Crucible of Suffering Force Of Anguish is very useful for when taking too much damage but shouldn't have to use it often. Could replace Swift Strikes, Torments Reach, Soul Mirror or Rooting Pain for it. This gives a very tanky character if you've dumped Dex to boost MIG & CON. After that PER, INT and RES depends what you want. I think a retaliation with some debuff build is simple and effective as a lot of good items need you to be hit or you to hit enemies and a couple need crits. Hence would increase PER and/or INT and not increase RES. Race I went Fire Godlike for the retaliation when < 50% health but I found it hard to micro it so i'd just go with a standard tanky race for ease of use. Talents are mostly Defensive. If letting AI use Torments+Swift for you then opens up Offensive talents and Fire+Lightning utility otherwise not worth it. Maybe Vulnerable Attack to help retaliation damage. Weapons have a lot of options, could just use Fists for traditional monk style. If using Torments then can use any good damage options or try Monksterlash. If going more retalation / debuff i'd look for weapons that give "Guarding" or debuff on hit but not chance based and don't need a crit as not stacking accuracy buffs and slow attack speed. Things like Captain Viccilos Anger, St Wygelts Cudgel, The Vile Loners Lance etc. Armour: He Caries Many Scares - High DR plus Extra DR in emergencies and Regen to keep health topped up. Helm (if not godlike): Garodhs Chorus - I prefer Preservation over Retaliation but I used AI controlled Torments Reach for more damage. Tempered Helm - More might and elemental DR, various affliction defence but get hit more from -Def... but if retaliating they're hurting themselves! He Caries Many Scares - +ATH for healing burst if needed and Stun+Prone defence which can't be defended by a Priest. Executioners Hood - Accuracy when missed by attack is wasted but Frightens in AOE which could be useful if no one else in group does it. Belts: Belt of the Royal Deadfire Cannoneer - Flame Shield when your crit so don't have to drink a potion. Firebrand and Torrent of Flame is a bit wasted but also get Might and Int in one item (plus dex). Binding Rope applies stuck and gives CON if want debuffs from belt Rings: Ring Iron Circle for more tankiness from DR in an emergency and CON or the usual +Def or +others. Ring of Protection Ring of Deflection Gloves: Blood Testament Gloves for more damage (applies to retaliation and strikes) Gloves Glittering Gauntlets causes Dazed when you hit them or they hit you and gives Deflection Cloaks Cloak of Protection Cloak of Comfort Hiros Mantle (the only retaliation item i'd consider but rarely) Boots: Shod In Faith - AOE healing Boots of Stability - Defend Prone / Push attacks1 point

It's not really hidden. But the weapon description is not very clear and many players just overlook the second lash or don't realize what the description means: There are two other weapons that have this (with a double burning lash instead of crush): Starcaller and Unforgiven, both unique flails.1 point

Going through the campaign in Battlefleet Gothic Armada 2 with a friend. I've been waiting for a tactical spaceship game with co-op since Starfleet Command 2. I'm finding a disturbing lack of over-the-top voice acting for a 40k product, so far. Gameplay wise it's entertaining enough, but I'm still learning the ropes.1 point

Shadow was probably the first Steam game I ever bothered to refund. It should be noted this isn't because I thought it "sucked" - per usual, I'm not willing to judge based on less than 2 hrs. But early on it felt focused more on flash than gameplay, I didn't like the controls, jumping/other mechanics (felt inconsistent), or the gameplay camera. I even disliked the main menu. Anyway I decided it wasn't even a "maybe one rainy day" so I refunded. I was also a big fan of the original TR series but every game or reboot beyond the original series I've liked less and less - Shadow was the first one I tried since maybe ... (looks up a list) ... Anniversary, I think.1 point

Mass Effect trilogy. Outer Worlds made me crave some classic Bioware stuff. Plan was to play Mass Effect2, as it's been a long time since I played it, but as I didn't have a save to import, I loaded a half-way complete save for ME1 and completed that first. I also plan to continue over to ME3 - never played any of it's DLCs, and the last time I played ME3 was around it's release. I am curious if I will hate it as much as I did back then. I am surprised that I don't enjoy ME2 as much as I did. For all it's faults ME1 had scope, consistancy and immersion, which ME2 lacks. Small things, but they matter - changing how traveling works, means that Normandy leaves the station everytime you return to the ship . Being in direct control of the ship, just doesn't gel, with being commander, rather then pilot. No Mako sequences make the world feel small, even though content wise ME2 is most likely far more packed then it's precedessor. While combat is improved, it is still not a good action shooter. The only thing I don't miss is managing the inventory, which was a boring chore in ME1. Plot of ME2 has some odd plot choices and forced melodrama, which I didn't bother me before. There is also far less companion content then I remembered. Overall, ME1 felt much more grounded and immersive, then ME2. ME2 feels much more gamey, and faster pace breaks the illusion much easier.1 point

Replaying Stalker: Shadow of Chernobyl. Damn, this game is still ton of fun to play. Going for Clear Sky and Shadow of Pripyat after that. Never played the sequels so I am pretty excited to play them once I am done replaying Stalker. Also, still playing God of War on the PS4. It's...ok. I am not sure what to make of the story. I mean so far it has been... Maybe it will pick up later on but honestly, I'd rather play Stalker instead at any given time.1 point

Meet Elanna. Moon Godlike Priestess of Eothas Deadfire Slave Difficulty: POTD Maim before death: Off. Knockout injuries: On. Expert mode: Off. You’d be forgiven in thinking that being born in the Deadfire Archipelago would be the perfect start for one blessed by Ondra, but fate was to play out differently. Elanna was abandoned by superstitious parents and found herself sold off as a good luck charm to a pirate crew. It was here she spent all of her formative years, until by good fortune she found her chance to escape in a boarding-gone-wrong for her captors. Tasting the free air for the first time in her memory she devoted herself to the god of redemption. When she heard that the god himself had manifested, and supposedly been killed, she set out immediately to investigate the events unfolding in the Dyrwood. Elanna has fully embraced the teachings of Eothas, wishing to impart onto the world all of the kindness that she was not shown in her early life. She does, however, still bear the scars of that life, making her sometimes quick to anger when she sees would-be oppressors. Having survived the deadly biawic Elanna quickly made her way to the Gilded Vale to find a less than warm welcome. She found comfort in finding a fellow Eothosian, and agreed to try to help him in a search for answers that looked to mirror hers. Likewise Aloth seemed to be a fish out of water in this cold and inhospitable town, so together they set out to help who they could, and find what answers were there to be found. Out intrepid adventurer and her new friends.1 point

Welcome on board, Concrete Monster! It's always nice to have another dedicated no-reloader in the Crew! Even tho there wasn't much activities over here lately, personally I'm still in and just about finishing Deadfire for the first time. Alas Gloomy Face was ripped by Wild Boars almost at the very begining (Engwithan dig site) but as I intended I've continued the exploration of the Deadfire to learn a bit more of new game mechanics and when I'll finish that run I intend to start all over again from the beginning of PoE1 with a new char I've already generated - a Cipher (PoE)>Cipher/Priest(Deadfire). Until then I'm looking forward to follow your run. All the best of luck and safe travels!1 point

Gloomy Face just finished his another completionist upscaled PoTD and my first Trial of Iron PoE/WM1/WM2 run. Each and every quest/task/bounty were resolved one way or another. The only exceptions are personal quests of Durance, Grieving Mother and Zahua. Once we hit level 9 there were very little obstacles which could hinder our steady stride. Most fights were won on per-encounter abilities/mastered spells: Gloomy Face (Tanglefoot, Autumn's Decay, Form of the Delemgan, Returning Storm), Xoti (Armor of Faith, Devotions for the Faithful, Dire Blessing, Holy Power), Aloth (Slicken, Deleterious Alacrity of Motion, Infuse With Vital Essence, Ninagauth's Shadowflame). After finishing remaining Act 2 tasks but just before moving to the hearings we've cleared the Endless Paths down to the Adra Dragon, finished remaining available bounties and completed upscaled WM1/WM2, were we befriended both Beregan's Flames-That-Whisper clan and Iron Flail (who in turn helped us in the Battle of Yenwood Field), killed Alpine Dragon (unintentionally - I had all the required stats to resolve this quest peacefully but seems just choose the wrong reply and had to improvise on the move), killed Concelhaut but striked a deal with Llengrath. The Crew hit level cap right upon entering Mowrghek Ien and the rest of the run it was mostly a RP choices to build a pre-history for the Deadfire (we poisoned Simoc and adopted Vela among other things). Adra Dragon was killed right before jumping down into the Breith Eaman and the only scary moments we experienced during Sserkal bounty when the whole Crew was disabled and took heavy raw damage and only thanks to Xoti, who once recovered applied Suppress Affliction, we emerged victorious. Thaos himself, even upscaled, doesn't accomplished much before falling dead and I erased his memories. All God's quests were completed (Sky Dragon was left alive) but I was torn between Berath's and Hylea's favors only. In the end I choose Hylea since Berath gained their part of souls anyway. Some screenshots for the remainder of the run. Forge Guardians: Radiant Spore: Concelhaut: Llengrath: Battle of Yenwood Field (if I remember correctly, we hardly lost even one single unit there): Alpine Dragon (as I've said, it was unintentional, but at least we fully upgraded Ryona's Breastplate for the first time): Kraken (I choose to strike the crystal myself and escaped thanks to Iverra's Diving Helmet. Since I haven't finished the hearings and some other quests at the moment I wasn't able to convince the Eyeless to reforge Abydon, but a tempered version, where his memories are restored but given context beyond what he remembered at his death.): Undead Raedric (Berath needs new Champion): Sserkal bounty (Scary moment... One thing that helped us to survive is that their vicious Psychic Blast is not party friendly so they hurt quite a bit between themselves): Adra Dragon (Xoti is a Beast Holy Warrior and Bane for Evil Ones. She claimed yet another boss' soul. Love her!): Pre-Thaos Crew stats/inventories. Gloomy Face and Xoti suffered 0 Knockouts, Eder, Aloth and Sagani - 2 each, Pallegina - a whopping 6, though one was erroneously gained when the Death Ring trap was triggered in the hit of combat and she suffered 2 knockouts at once. Gloomy Face: Eder: Aloth: Xoti: Sagani: Pallegina: And finally Thaos: Now Gloomy Face has graduated into the PoE2:Deadfire, where I made him Druid(Animist)/Ranger(Arcane Archer) with the same attributes and Wolf Companion Nymeria in a name and memory of Sagani, one of my most favorite characters, who doesn't feel satisfied back in the village and went missing in a blizzard in one of her hunts only because of me being unable to find right words of support when she needed them most... Eder has his faith in Eothas renewed, and he joined a secret Eothasian organization known as the Night Market. Pallegina had gone against the ducs bels' orders by inventing a new trade arrangement with the anamenfath to accommodate the recovering Dyrwoodan market. She was banished from the Republics and entered the ranks of the Kind Wayfarers. Aloth, armed with the knowledge and courage he had gained on his journeys with Gloomy Face, set out on the long and lonely task of dismantling the Leaden Key. I'm going to run the same Crew in Deadfire on PoTD, completionist, upscaled (all), but not Trial of Iron this time since this will be mostly a blind run and game mechanics are quite different from the first PoE. I'm also going to continue the exploration of Deadfire Archipelago if I'll fail on the first try, but until then to be continued...1 point
