Favorite games that got shelved :(

So I saw this moments ago and thought to myself 'how many canceled games do I know of and which ones hurt the most?'

Hmmm...

-C&C Generals 2

-Fallout Van Buren

-Prey 2

-Duke Nukem Forever(2001 version)

-Silent Hills

Just to name a few. But yeah, that Generals games really hurt. Good ol' RTS games of the late 90's and early 2000's...

Scalebound is the first one that comes to mind, mainly because it was being developed by Platinum Games, and I'm a big fan of theirs.

I concur about Prey 2. Sure, we got a "reboot" instead that has nothing whatsoever to do with the original, but is a good game, however I still really wanted to play Prey 2.

I'll also throw Star Wars 1313 out there. I personally didn't care since my inner Star Wars fan died a long time ago (in a galaxy far away), but it was a high profile cancellation a lot of people were devastated about.

P.S. When can we put BG&E2 and Star Citizen on this list? /hides :ninja:

Star Citizen... it is a game I keep forgetting about because it seems to just not want to die. A continuous death rattle and every time you think that's it is dead, it coughs up some more blood. As if we were in the gaming industry's version of a morbid slapstick comedy.

I would say Obsidian Alien RPG, but considering how troubled development was, would it be any good?

oh, and Black Hound.

and honestly, the original version of what became The Bureau: XCOM Declassified. While offensive when announced, after getting a proper XCOM by FIraxis I wouldn’t be opposed to a standalone FPS Bioshock-style reimagining. What we got though felt like a rushed, mostly uninspired tie-in to a turn based smash hit.

EDIT: Mandate! Promising Kickstarter project that never came to be.

If sequels count, Dungeon Keeper 3. Not that I expected it would become a favorite of that series, but you never know and I wanted the chance to find out.

Other than that, nothing. I don't tend to look for or keep track of developing games - often I don't even know about a game until after release. The few I did look forward to and took years to find a release form, so far did all release.

Stacraft: Ghost?

Quote
“Political philosophers have often pointed out that in wartime, the citizen, the male citizen at least, loses one of his most basic rights, his right to life; and this has been true ever since the French Revolution and the invention of conscription, now an almost universally accepted principle. But these same philosophers have rarely noted that the citizen in question simultaneously loses another right, one just as basic and perhaps even more vital for his conception of himself as a civilized human being: the right not to kill.”

-Jonathan Littell <<Les Bienveillantes>>

"The chancellor, the late chancellor, was only partly correct. He was obsolete. But so is the State, the entity he worshipped. Any state, entity, or ideology becomes obsolete when it stockpiles the wrong weapons: when it captures territories, but not minds; when it enslaves millions, but convinces nobody. When it is naked, yet puts on armor and calls it faith, while in the Eyes of God it has no faith at all. Any state, any entity, any ideology that fails to recognize the worth, the dignity, the rights of Man...that state is obsolete."

Icewind Dale 2 in the 2nd Edition ADnD. Is the first which comes to my mind. I fell in love with all the interesting kits, which were announced, but in the end, we ended up with 3rd edition feats. Theoretically, we should get more versatile characters, but the number of feats was lackluster 😞

BG Black Hound, the proper Baldur’s Gate 3 and Van Buren Fallout are the most missed RPGs, and the come my maximum butthurt overload. Privateer 3 and Wing Commander Prophecy 2.

I became so much butthurt after cancellation of Privateer 3, that I have not bought a single EA games after that date 😞 it still lasts up to these days...

Dreamland Chronicles was the real cancelled Xcom game. :p

Blizzard had another MMO in development that became Overwatch. I would have liked to see that.

This whole crowdfunding age has really given me one more crack at the favorites. Lori and Corey Cole got to make a decent Quest for Glory type game and Julian Gollop got to make a decent Xcom type game. Now I just need Ian Currie to make a decent Jagged Alliance type game.

The Last Ninja: Return to Lin Fen Island got canceled in 2004. Could have been really sweet.

Mother 3 eventually got released on the GBA but I felt really butthurt when the N64 version got canceled. Besides, the GBA version was only released in Japan. Seriously, Nintendo....

I also had high hopes for Star Craft: Ghost at the time.

Nocturne 2 eventually turned into Bloodrayne. Shame, I would have prefered Svetlana Lupescu because she looked like an actual half vampire and not a stripper. :p

Baldur’s Gate III: The Black Hound. Icewind Dale and NWN2 + expansions are probably my favorite incarnations of FR, I like how Black Isle and Obsidian, and Sawyer as a game director, approaches the setting and thought BG3 sounding very interesting, even though using the BG name was a bit if a cop out.

And even after the game was canceled, I wish Josh had had the time ( / had been allowed?) to finish the NWN2 module he was working on.

One or two games to the Legacy of Kain series to finish the plot. Dark Sun or that Nosgoth online game obviously don't count.

Oh and Jade Empire 2.

I loved the original Prey 2 premise so much.

Same here, Bethesda cancelled this gem for "quality concerns" and gave us Fallout 76 instead...

Civilization, in fact, grows more and more maudlin and hysterical; especially under democracy it tends to degenerate into a mere combat of crazes; the whole aim of practical politics is to keep the populace alarmed (and hence clamorous to be led to safety) by menacing it with an endless series of hobgoblins, most of them imaginary. - H.L. Mencken

Headfirst (who'd done Call of Cthulu: Dark Corners of the Earth) was working on a video game adaption of DEADLANDS that I was looking forward to. Obviously Headfirst's bankruptcy ended that.
