Just finished The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel 4. Man, this a long time in coming. CS4 isn't just the conclusion to the Cold Steel subseries, but also the end of the main story of Trails in the western half of Zemuria (the name of the continent on which the games take place). (While Trails of Reverie is supposed to be the last Trails game on the western side of Zemuria, from what I understand Reverie is a denouement while CS4 is the conclusion to the primary conflict.) I've said about a million times, but the Trails games are the Marvel Cinematic Universe of video game series. Each games ties into the overall story and forwards parts of each of the other plot lines. It's crazy to think that this all began back in 2004 when the first Trails in the Sky game dropped in Japan. Zemuria has changed a lot since then in the game world and in the technology used to create it. It's hard to go into detail about CS4 without diving headfirst into spoilers, so instead here's a list of things it did well and a list of things it didn't do so well. The Good Wrapping Up Minor Plot Threads--There were very minor NPC plot threads that I haven't seen in so long I forgot they even existed that the writers still went out of their way to conclude. Some of them going as far back as Sky 1. Most of these were satisfying and you could tell the devs put a lot of thought into them, including in some lingering questions that fans had long since given up on expecting any real conclusion on. Combat Evolution Over the Series--Trails games have turn based combat but they've always had hidden or semi-hidden mechanics that if you dig into can really break the game. Over time they ditched the hidden mechanics to make combat more transparent and consequently more engaging. If you don't like turn based or if you hate crazy itemization that can break the game, you won't like Trails. I happen to like both of those things. Epic Final Boss--They really build up the final boss in a similar fashion to Final Fantasy games. They managed to capture the hype and drive the emotions up along the way, giving the feelings of a truly enormous stakes are on the line. In fact, if anything they might want to tone it down a bit in the next subseries. Pom! Pom! Party!--Falcom loves their mini-games. They added a PvP (you versus the AI) connect three with some interesting quirks that I sunk more time into than I care to admit. Suffice to say, my play time could've been noticeably shorter if this min-game hadn't hooked me. The Ending Slides--I teared up. Can't go into details. Spoilers. The Bad Bonding Events--I wasn't a fan of the Persona-like elements the CS games adopted in the beginning and if anything CS4 vindicated me. When every interaction with the opposite sex is romantic and you have four games, it brings new meaning to the term, "slow burn romance". Forgetting the fact that some of those romance options weren't appropriate (usually in the age difference), it actually got tiresome going through the female half of Class VII's bonding events. I frequently found myself at the start of a new day playing Pom! Pom! Party! rather than sit through another awkward confession scene. Bonding Events (2)--Some of the bonding events should've been playable companion quests instead of having to passively read through them. In fact there are two off the top of my head that basically were companion quests but rather than me being able to solve the mystery or fight the monster I read through how Rean (the main character) solved the mystery or fought the monster. This was frustrating and even knowing that Falcom is an independent AA studio, it felt cheap. Lack of VO--I'm pretty sure that CS4 had the exact same amount of voiced over lines as CS3, which had the same amount as CS2, however CS4 has far more dialog so keeping the same amount of voiced lines means you hear them less often. And it's noticeable. Lengthy Cutscenes--There were at least three cutscenes that were at least an hour long apiece. That's three hours of game that I sat passively reading dialog with no pause for actual gameplay. Not even a few rounds of Pom! Pom! Party! Given that you can usually tell in what direction each of these huge cutscenes was going, at the halfway point those scenes in particular felt like bloat to pad playtime. Story Pacing--CS4 mirrors CS2 in many ways. Both change so much from act to act it feels less like playing one game rather than playing three or four games duct taped together. The pacing feels all over the place because of it. The Final Plot Twist--While I didn't know what the twist was going into this game, I was aware that it was controversial when the game first launched in Japan. CS4 is to date the only Trails game to receive mixed reviews from fans. Having now played through it, I'm on the side of those who found it disappointing. It doesn't ruin the game or the story but it is still disappointing. Conclusion: CS4 is a very flawed, but very good game. To date I would say I haven't played a bad Trails game but I would rate CS4 right at the bottom of a Trails favorites list because of it's many difficult to overlook flaws. But yeah, I'll probably still new game plus it.2 points

not taboo. complex. the US is almost unique when it comes to police. we do not have a national police force. police power is reserved to the states, which is actual one reason why national mask mandates for covid is functional impossible, 'cause as odd as it sounds, such mandates is considered, from a law pov, a police power. the fed may mandate for fed employees, but not state citizens. each state has its own police, and boy do they ever have police... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_law_enforcement_agencies_in_California you are never gonna see us post wiki as basis in fact, but the link provides a rough notion o' how many police forces there is in ca alone, and those numbers is hardly a california thing. check for wisconsin or missouri if you wish. similar extreme numbers. gonna use covid again to stress another point and that is that municipal and county sheriffs departments is beholden to their own constituencies more than the governor, so when governor newsom passed mask mandates, a fair number o' municipal police departments and county sheriffs simply announced they were not gonna enforce the mandates, and there was little the governor could do 'bout such violations o' the rule o' law from a practical perspective. sure, its illegal for the sacramento county sheriff to refuse to enforce covid mandates, but what then? ok, so the fbi asks state and local departments to keep records and share data on all sorta crime data and is then up to state and local departments to decide if they wanna share such data. there is fed grant money often tied to sharing data, but state and local departments are often creative or just plain lazy when it comes to how accurate and detailed is the data they share, and there isn't a damn thing the fed government may do to compel the yuba county sheriff to be more diligent in transmitting numbers and reports. is not taboo. is federalism. is complex. is almost uniquely american in its perversity. 1. Looks gosh-awful, as per usual. 2. That choppiness is really bad, especially when so much of it is CGI. Hell yeah...but doesn't really seem like something a show, much less shows, would ever go for. I also wonder how expensive it would be to produce a full-length pixel-art show compared to CGI. It looks pretty good, though some of the characters and their designs are a little out there. As for the gameplay, it's pretty much just a pleasant, atmospheric story game, . I suppose if there was something I'd hate more than the Nadia filler, it'd probably be something like the worst parts of Love Live...1 point
-
Absolutely: I've seen a lot of good-looking anime pixel art styles over the years between a number of games and random artists, but I'm struggling to think of something off the top of my head. I don't think I'd place the style in that particular video too highly, but it's not bad either. Probably won't ever happen for a real show, though, if I had to guess. (e): I like a lot of VA-11 HALL-A's style:1 point

Yeah, but there's a reason why people don't use "national debt" (well, they do, as a synonym for government debt though "government debt" is a far better term for it). If you want to make people pretty much everywhere wet themselves try using the figures for unfunded government liabilities... There are multiple reasons why China- and Japan's is ludicrously large in to gdp ratio terms- debt isn't as much of a concern; very high levels of private savings and in China's case the small matter of ~3T in simple currency reserves which makes their practical government debt only ~35% of GDP. To be honest the current talk about things like Evergrande bringing down China's economy is a bit ridiculous and pretty much directly equivalent to all those 2014 articles assuring people that sanctions would drive Russia bankrupt in months. The government could pay Evergrande's entire debt with cash in hand, if they needed to. China's economy is artificial and a house of cards but they spend a lot of time and effort gluing the cards together; and you'll go a long way to find an economy that isn't a house of cards built on flim flam and bubbles anywhere at the moment. What's the figure for the US derivatives market? More theoretical money than actually exists in the entire world's economy you say? Countries with an average house 20x the median wage and 'cooling' at an annual increase of 20% (wages, 2%)? Money printing, free debt etc etc. Everyone is propping themselves up.1 point

We all know about the workbench, it is what you use to craft better tools and items. What if there were to be a sturdier workbench? It could be crafted out of quartzite, silk rope, and acorn shells, clay, berry leather, crow feathers, and koi fish scales. It would be used to craft higher tier armor/weapons, and more new items. Also could be used to make normal items cost less to make and repair. The workbench in the pond lab could be replaced by a sturdy workbench too, since it is made of metal, something that we cannot get in the game. I feel like this could actually be something to go into the game.1 point

Yakuza: Like a Dragon. It's gut. Not sure about jRPG combat - I always through that action packed brawler was a nice balance to running around and chatting. As is, the game is overall low energy - though I do appreciate how hilarious the skills are. Liking Ichiban quite a bit. He is just as entertaining as Kiryu, just in a more derpy way. Also returned to Starcraft2. Finally after over 10 years, I have a PC that can run it well... Turns out, that my time spent in casual coop mode, actually made me a better player. Finally can comfortably multitask. Completed Wings of Libery on brutal, and outside the last mission I didn't have much trouble with it - while previously I have been struggling on hard. Am midway through Heart of the Swarm. Dang, I forgot how much the game drops in quality after the first campaign. Also I am still upset with how they twisted the characters for the sequel, and overal how garbage the story is.1 point

Actually my doctor and audiologist said it was an option, but they strongly advised keeping it as the very last option because putting in the implants means destroying your inner ear bits. Cost I do not know specifically other than that it is very expensive. But even for my hearing aid, which is a fancy programmable device that more than ten years ago cost something like $2,500+, my insurance covered everything including all the tests and other doctor/audiology visits and I had to pay only a total of about $700 myself. Seemed eminently reasonable.1 point

Honestly I can relate so much, Deadfire modding is rough getting into... Ooh I didn't realize that, perceptive. I think I know the reason why... Basically, the Greater Lay on Hands/Hands of Light "unlockables" that you see in the tree are still the same as vanilla and won't actually replace Lay on Hands... but when you pick them, a corresponding hidden unlockable (which I added with BaseProgressionTableAppendGameData) will now have its conditional fulfilled and be auto-granted to the character. This unlockable doesn't add any new abilities, instead it removes the Lay on Hands variant the upgrade relates to. This way I didn't have to edit the Paladin Table directly, which is much preferable for compatability reasons among other things The downside of using BaseProgressionTableAppend is that you can't edit the unlockables already present by the original Table, but in this case it worked out!1 point

20 mintus left on the Love Live! movie. I never needed as long as this to get through a 90 minute film. Seriously. Ever since the flight back from New York there's been a dramatic increase in lesbian subtext, something that was understated and by far and large only concerned Nozomi and Eri in the regular show. Things like Honoka leaning meaningfully over Kotori and talking about the "memories" made in New York while looking out of the airplane's window. Now one of the A-RISE girls (Anju) talks to Kotori about having high-maintenance partners. Then Tsubasa (left) is... composing a song with Maki. Yes. That's... composing. I don't really have the energy to make more pictures, but it ends with Maki blushing. I guess the song's really emotional, eh? Just in case it's not obvious from the picture, they're composing a new song here. "TsubaMaki" has an entry on the shipping wiki. Please, for the love of god, make it end. Please. Eh, can we go back to Nozomi fondling boobs now? Please? Anything, really. Anything is better than this, constantly interrupted by horrenduous musical interludes. edit: Movie just copied the "mama" running gag from K-On!. In K-On!, Mio always calls her mother mama, which usually is limited to very little children. Whenever Mio talks about her mother, everyone else is kind of amused by her saying mama. Maki says mama, the others are like "mama?". Yeah, how original. Really, ugh. 17 minutes left. edit 2: Honoka told everyone that Muse will disband after their final show. Next scene the girls talk about that they're glad they "came out" and never expected Honoka to "come out like that" - now that might just be the "humor" of the translator, but really, go to hell film. edit 3: It's over! OVER! *dances*1 point

Thank you very much!!! I really want to learn making mod myself, but it seems quite hard for me, sadly. I'm trying to learn it by extracting the other mods such as Balance Polishing Mod and Community Patch Mod and I can change several values form the mod now, however, the things like adding something new or changing overall effects are barely possible for now. I have to look into the mod what you've attached for deeper study. Thank you again! EDIT: I found a small bug that the description doesn't show "Upgraded From". My char doesn't reach enough level to get the upgraded version yet; I hope it would be a typo.1 point

Am I boring everyone yet? I've reached a point where most screencaps are spoilers, anyway - so here's a different picture for you. A character is in there somewhere, can you see him? Additional: story started feeling too "serious" so I took off all the bunny/ears and things. I was also tired of never seeing the young mage's eyes in cutscenes so I gave her a different pair of glasses. Pretty! Fire always makes things better.1 point

aside: ignoring personality quirks, am gonna suggest the best wotr tank companion for late game is camellia, but such an observation is assuming no creative multiclassing 'cause seelah gets serious tanky upgrades from dips into bard and skald and whatnot, though such dips have a predictable cost in terms o' those extreme useful high level paladin abilities. other than story reasons for preferring seelah to camellia, am almost always having seelah around, particular late game, 'cause o' mark of justice and other paladin support abilities and not 'cause o' pure tankiness. HA! Good Fun! ps am admitting we kinda loathe camellia. the writing is uneven and am suspecting you only get full benefit o' her "character development" if the elizabeth báthory options in dialogues make you laugh, so perhaps we missed the high points.1 point

You are probably being facetious, but it does remind me that when my wife taught in an inner city high school for years, before winter and summer breaks a number of the kids would act out. Their thinking was that if they get sent to juvenile hall for a couple weeks, they will get to eat during the breaks. The pandemic has intensified food insecurity across the US as well.1 point

Don’t get me started on Fox “News” hosts. Most brain dead performance I’ve seen was some completely empty headed individual going on and on about what kind of socialist hell Denmark is, going the same way as Venezuela. Because of such atrocities like free healthcare and free universities. Two different takes on taking the misinformation apart. am knowing there is more than a few obsidian posters who agree with martha and larry, and am admitting the last four years has disabused us o' the arrogance o' being confident in any "most americans" observations, but we would hope many americans realize there is an unconscionable large % o' american children who only get one decent meal a day, and that one sufficient meal is available only 'cause o' free school lunch programs. nutrition is kinda essential for brain development as a child matures. ... am recalling a happier time when pundits were self conscious enough to be embarrassed if they let slip their prejudices regarding social welfare programs which benefited children and others objective unable to bootstrap themselves out of hunger and poverty. in 2021 we got fox news anchors casual bemoaning those damned lazy first graders being conditioned to look for the next handout? I have decided. Hootle is the best character in the game. a master actor of expressive feeling ... a shoo-in for the Owl Academy Awards. Still haven't controlled her. I just switch to take scenic pics sometimes. You will get knocked through the air and onto your backside, often. The beachwear DLC outfit for my husbando was also worth it. Hey, there's a bikini DLC for the shield-woman, so fair play. Thanks, Bandai Namco. Can't tell if Rinwell's grin = appreciation or mocking laughter.1 point

Very thematically, in Starship Troopers, I lost half my army trying to clear out some bug nests and getting swarmed. I had reinforcements drop at a nearby outpost to replace the lost units, but the bugs overran the outpost before the dropships landed, so when they did and the soldiers disembarked, they found themselves right in the middle of the bug swarm. Two of them managed to lob some grenades and take at least some bugs with them. Because they had stirred that nest though, a larger swarm had been riled up and attacked my base, costing me half my HMG turrets...0 points

Maybe Sueamitrab will like it along with K-On!(!)after they take over Bartimaeus' life and imprison them somewhere, but Bartimaeus generally doesn't like anime dudes and really doesn't like post-90's animation at all so...yeah I agree with majestic, the destroyer of gummy bears and bane of Bruno Vercini. I see you agree with me. Anyway, I'm still not finished with the Love Live! movie. It really doubled down on the musical interludes, and now that they're back from New York they're suddenly hugely popular idols. As if winning a national competition in the show proper wasn't enough for that, but a single overseas concert is. Yeah, makes sense. They also just had a whole scene where the dialogue was nothing but OOOOOOOH AAAAAAAAAH WEEEEEEEEEEEE WHOOOOOOOOOOOOO OOOOOOOOOOOOOOH EEEEEEEEEEEEEEH WAAAAAAAAAA LAAAAAAAAAAA OEEEEEEEEE? with the girls looking at all the µ's flyers and broadcasts and whatnot. Sure. Well, I guess that's it, I complained about Love Live! not nearly being as bad as I thought it would be, but this is it. This is terrible. Umi is sitting in a corner and crying, saying this is too embarrassing and that she can't deal with everything. I hear you, my dear Umi. I hear you. You and me both, you and me... both. It's hard to believe this was written by the same person that made the Rome and Juliet episode of K-On!. Sigh. 53 minutes left. edit: One minute later they're kidnapping Honoka to force µ's to not disband. Wow. edit 2: Scene lasts all of 20 seconds. Such funny. Much laugh.0 points
