Hurlshort Posted August 18, 2015 Posted August 18, 2015 Well, they're useless as you've just let them be and it's not impossible or even difficult to have a system that runs them these days - XP ran a lot of my old favourites pretty smoothly with a minimum of tweaking. But there's always GOG for older releases, even if it is funny to have to buy a game again to play it. That's exactly it. If I really want to be able to play all my old CD's, then I can run an older OS, and I'd probably buy a laptop with a CD drive. But that isn't unique to games. My VHS tapes and my cassettes aren't all that useful anymore either. The idea that I have to purchase something again in a different format is hardly a surprise. I actually expect my digital media to last longer, since it isn't tied to a physical CD that can get damaged. It's easier to keep track of as well.

Well, also have ISOs, if you're concerned about the physical media degrading and you have some issue with an optical drive. In that case not sure the "format" is all that different. Hm, thinking on it, not sure I've even tried making one of a game with SecurROM or Starforce or what have you, might not be possible. Nonek Posted August 18, 2015 Posted August 18, 2015 Feargus is on the advisory board, whatever that is, for a new crowdfunding platform. Alongside Tim Schafer and Brian Fargo. https://www.fig.co/about I think it would be perfectly reasonable to trust a Fargo with money, a Scot like Mr Urquhart as well who executed what was probably one of the most satisfactory and well managed Kickstarters seen thus far, but Mr Schafer? Personally I wouldn't trust him with a ha'penny, after all basic addition eludes the gentleman. 4 Quite an experience to live in misery isn't it? That's what it is to be married with children.I've seen things you people can't even imagine. Pearly Kings glittering on the Elephant and Castle, Morris Men dancing 'til the last light of midsummer. I watched Druid fires burning in the ruins of Stonehenge, and Yorkshiremen gurning for prizes. All these things will be lost in time, like alopecia on a skinhead. Time for tiffin. Tea for the teapot!

Majek Posted August 18, 2015 Posted August 18, 2015 (edited) Decent enough i guess but not as great as the first game Archimedean Dynasty. That one is a spacesim underwater variant while Aquanox games turned completely into underwater FPS. Simply put from a joystick( plays greast with keyboard but adding a joystick made it better ) game to mouse+keyboard. And i hated that a lot. So i only recommend the first one, even if it is almost 20 years old with ancient graphics , it's still one my favorite games ever. I like it more than Wing Commander games even. :D Edited August 18, 2015 by Majek 1 1.13 killed off Ja2.

I can say, that I would risk/invest much more money on Pillars and Torment, if that would be the case when they started their funding campaigns... I'm on the fence about this because it puts too much power onto the hands of the public by minimizing the risk. It could work by tapping into the group mentality that is festered on the internet and have direct benefits as boost to publicity. But as game dev I really don't want to work for gamers, they complain too much and know too little. Kickstarter has a good balance where the devs can use it as launch platform, this new model seems to make devs beholden to gamers. That power dynamic might create a very hostile environment for the devs. I'd say the answer to that question is kind of like the answer to "who's the sucker in this poker game?"* *If you can't tell, it's you.

Agiel Posted August 20, 2015 Posted August 20, 2015 Phantom Pain won't have pre-loading. Though I lost my interest in Metal Gear Solid at Snake Eater (I actually really dig the truly prescient post-modern navel gazing of MGS2*, and I far prefer the idea of the Patriots being the will of the United States made manifest rather than them being AIs), I got it if only for the sake that I should have something to put that AMD R9 FuryX I ordered through its paces. Quote “Political philosophers have often pointed out that in wartime, the citizen, the male citizen at least, loses one of his most basic rights, his right to life; and this has been true ever since the French Revolution and the invention of conscription, now an almost universally accepted principle. But these same philosophers have rarely noted that the citizen in question simultaneously loses another right, one just as basic and perhaps even more vital for his conception of himself as a civilized human being: the right not to kill.” -Jonathan Littell <<Les Bienveillantes>> Quote "The chancellor, the late chancellor, was only partly correct. He was obsolete. But so is the State, the entity he worshipped. Any state, entity, or ideology becomes obsolete when it stockpiles the wrong weapons: when it captures territories, but not minds; when it enslaves millions, but convinces nobody. When it is naked, yet puts on armor and calls it faith, while in the Eyes of God it has no faith at all. Any state, any entity, any ideology that fails to recognize the worth, the dignity, the rights of Man...that state is obsolete." -Rod Serling

Zoraptor Posted August 20, 2015 Posted August 20, 2015 Some interesting stats on steam usage and the PC game market via steamspy and the dude who runs its blog. eg only 1.3 million 'core' gamers on steam own 33% of all games there (107+ games); 80% of steam users own four or less games... Though I do suspect that this is one case in which steamspy's methodology breaks down at least somewhat, I'd strongly suspect that 'core' gamers and those with more games are far more likely to set their profile to private (which steamspy cannot see so don't get counted in the stats) than to public, and the stats are skewed towards more casual users as a result.
Bartimaeus Posted August 21, 2015 Posted August 21, 2015 Yeah, most people I know set their profiles to at least friends only...unless they have a specific reason for keeping it completely public. No way to tell how many people that actually is, though. I personally keep my profile completely private...and I'll continue to do so until they implement friends list-specific privacy controls. Quote How I have existed fills me with horror. For I have failed in everything - spelling, arithmetic, riding, tennis, golf; dancing, singing, acting; wife, mistress, whore, friend. Even cooking. Lexx Posted August 21, 2015 Posted August 21, 2015 (edited) Back in the days you heard stories about people getting their accounts hacked and stuff. Quite a few folks I know (including me), set their Steam profile to private due to this. The idea is: If the world doesn't know how many and what games you have, the interest in trying to get your account is drastically lowered. In any case, why should I care if someone else can see what games I have. I don't feel the need to impress people with my e-penor. tl;dr - his data might be a little flawed due to this. Or the private-only group is so small that it doesn't matter... who knows, certainly not me. Bartimaeus Posted August 21, 2015 Posted August 21, 2015 That's the next thing I would like after friends list-specific privacy settings: games list-specific privacy settings. It'd be nice if there were just options/customization for everything...knowing Valve, it'll be another ten to twenty years...or more likely, never. Quote How I have existed fills me with horror.
