RANDOM VIDEO GAME NEWS

Youtube needs a transcript tool. I don't have time to watch a 40 minute video, but I can read a transcript in 10.

Synopsis:  Both sides have fair points.  Gamers and reviewers sometimes look at games differently because of the situations they're in.  Reviewers get the games for free, also they have hundreds of games to review constantly, so things like busywork are an obstacle to them getting to the heart of the game so they can post a review.  Gamers have to pay for their own games and don't generally have the same time pressures reviewers do, so things that seem like busywork for reviewers may be enjoyable activities to gamers that extend their playing time and give them value for the money they had to spend.  Also, Ars Technica are ****wads for going with a clickbait-y presumptuous title for their review.  Also also, don't get hung up on scores, they fail to tell the whole story.  Also also also, scores bad, mmkay?

Edit: Ninja'd  :ninja:

You forgot the "...and that's why my reviews using large chunks of gameplay footage instead of scores with commentary to explain why I hold my opinions are so much more awesomer" bit.

I cannot - yet I must. How do you calculate that? At what point on the graph do "must" and "cannot" meet? Yet I must - but I cannot! ~ Ro-Man

well, now I am confused... so many here plays Mad Max and it get's Reviews like this

http://arstechnica.co.uk/gaming/2015/09/whatever-youre-looking-for-in-a-mad-max-game-mad-max-isnt-it/

or this

http://www.thejimquisition.com/2015/09/mad-max-review/

A bit late, but this video from one Cynical Brit talks at length about the very disconnect between user attitudes and some reviewer attitudes toward Mad Max that Mamo (I hope it's alright I shorten your username to that...  would you prefer MamWar? MWar?) asked about, and even talks about the very reviews linked here.

Mamo/Mamoo is fine :p

There's another aspect that I think Mr Biscuit has overlooked, and that is the preponderence of other games of the same type and gameplay recieving almost perfect scores, whereas Miffed Max is hammered by criticism that they never were. Now they might defend themselves with saying that they've grown tired of the systems on display since say Skyrim was released, but the Elder Scrolls have been doing the same things for many years before the latest iteration was released, so why didn't the game journalists grow tired of that series and spurn it similarly to how they have done Mardy Max?

There seems to be a dissonance here, and one wonders why Maudlin Max was singled out for such harsh criticism, when games that are clearly inferior in many ways (for instance in terms of broken and buggy releases,) are praised and no mention is made of their shortcomings? The grinding for instance heavily criticised in this game is not even mentioned when occuring in others, even when it does not fit the setting, whereas scavenging and survival are an intrinsic part of the Miserable Max setting.

In short i'm suspicious of why the game journalist shills have suddenly turned on their previous meal ticket, especially when this is one of the few releases that does not deserve this much ire, whereas far weaker, degenerate and less polished games have been praised to the high heavens. This seems both out of character and inconsistent, and bearing in mind the proven corruption and unethical nature of the profession, well scepticism is warranted I think.

Quite an experience to live in misery isn't it? That's what it is to be married with children.

I've seen things you people can't even imagine. Pearly Kings glittering on the Elephant and Castle, Morris Men dancing 'til the last light of midsummer. I watched Druid fires burning in the ruins of Stonehenge, and Yorkshiremen gurning for prizes. All these things will be lost in time, like alopecia on a skinhead. Time for tiffin.

I miss the days when Youtube vids were max 10 minutes.

Nah, it's great to listen to OSTs beyond 10 minutes.

CDs are awesome but they did tend to encourage musicians to put more pointless filler songs on their albums. I mean it's great and all that you can now have all four sides of all the great double-vinyl albums on the one continuous play, but most artists don't have the chops to fill a double-album every release.

I meant to relate that to the topic at hand but the point got lost somewhere in the process.

He mentions that, but Jim carries over in the general "reviewers end up with a different perspective because they see every game".

To put it another way, I've never played the Batman: Arkham games. So for me, the gameplay may seem new and/or novel. But a reviewer who has played that and all of the clones will feel differently.

I call it DYNASTY WARRIORS syndrome. I usually only play every other iteration and the gameplay carry overs aren't as obvious to me. On the other hand I also like the basic gameplay of Dynasty Warriors so the lack of change has never bothered me.

Not saying there aren't bad uses of the time available - 10 hours of the Battlefield theme for example. I just listen to game soundtracks or a LP of an adventure game at work, makes it easier without playlists and such.

I wonder if it has to do with both Mad Max and Arkham Knight being published by Warner Bros?

Hmmm, smelling blood in the water and swarming to take advantage of the supposed weakness in the hopes of regaining a measure of legitimacy and influence? It's certainly possible, and fits their MO, though i'd not like to speculate beyond that.

How did Warner Bros ever enter vidya gaems anyway

If you're seriously asking, as far as I know they kept buying companies they'd successfully partnered with through their licensing arm, starting sometime in the mid 2000s (possibly due to the mixed results of their licensed properties prior to that).

TT Games; Monolith Productions, Snowblind Studios and Surreal Software (merged into Monolith); Midway Games (became NetherRealm); Turbine, and Rocksteady were all originally development partners. Even their interest in SCi was bought because they had a relationship at the time with Eidos. Since 2010 they've founded two WB Games studios (one in San Francisco, one in Qubec) that aren't based on a previous acquisition.

With the exceptions of compilation albums and anthology-type releases, CDs are hardly ever filled up to capacity, anyways...though it varies from genre to genre and from artist to artist, I suppose. Vocal and lyric-focused albums/music especially tend to stay around the 40-45 minute mark, and sometimes even get as low as 35 minutes...and basically never beyond 50. (Weird Al and They Might Be Giants come to mind as examples I personally know of off-hand, and I'm sure there are countless more in different genres.) It's just hard to fill up the full 70 minutes or so if there's constant attention paid to vocals and lyrics. tongue.png For music/artists with stronger instrumental roots, on the other hand...74 minutes, here we come! wink.png

How I have existed fills me with horror. For I have failed in everything - spelling, arithmetic, riding, tennis, golf; dancing, singing, acting; wife, mistress, whore, friend. Even cooking. And I do not excuse myself with the usual escape of 'not trying'. I tried with all my heart.

In my dreams, I am not crippled. In my dreams, I dance.

Final Fantasy V is coming to PC

This is essentially the GBA version that was also previously ported to iOS and Android.  It's a fantastic game, for the few that have never played it.  I believe it was the second (?) time in the series that they used the job system.
