Game Design died with when the gameplay economy was extended beyond just the player and the environment to being a sense of identity and accomplishment reward by unique experience ranked against your peers and purchasable with the dollar.

How? How does that even happen?!

I never played Anthemn so I don't know **** about its progression, but I can definitely see it happening if plan for weapons would be for all of them to be equally viable sidegrades, with increasing level merely unlocking more options (like active/passive abilities and such) for said weapons. You could then easily get into a situation where base lvl 1 gun would emit the highest damage numbers.

While I am just talking out of my ass when it comes to Anthemn, all I'm saying is that there's more ways of doing progression than just liear damage progression and a weapon that dishes out a lot of single-target DPS sounds like the ideal newb gun to me.

Edit: I mean, in Warframe, the weapon you get at the very start of the game should, theoretically, be just as viable as the one you get 100h down the line - they differ in behavior, but the only thing that leads to damage progression are mods, which are transferable from one weapon to another. I quite like that system as, suddenly, you get to choose which weapons you enjoy to use as opposed to using whatever has the highest damage number at the time.

How? How does that even happen?!

Because it's popular to bash Anthem at the moment.

Oh, wait, you were talking about the bug. That's an issue with level 1 weapon damage scaling in general, not a problem with the level 1 Defender rifle. The scaling breaks when you equip a level 1 weapon. It's a very Biowarey* bug like on hit effect stacking in Dragon Age: Inquistion where two +5 guard on hit mastercrafting boni would not stack but a +5 and a +4 would give you 9 guard on hit.

As for how and why this wasn't caught earlier, well, nobody plays more than one mission with these weapons equipped, and that's literally the first one you do. After that you can only unlock Javelins when reaching certain level thresholds and by then you're swimming in supposedly better weapons and the numbers that pop up when shooting stuff get steadily higher, so you don't notice.

It was caught by a theorycrafter trying to figure out how damage is calculated. Which is why they attempted to play with a bonusless level 1 Defender for a baseline comparison. Which is something you don't have to do as internal tester.

*Could easily have happened to Blizzard as well. WoW was and probably still is riddled with issues like that. Good old times when you had to farm a level 45 dungeon for blue gear that was better for certain builds (or encounters) than the epic loot you got from level 60 raids. Diablo 2 still has tooltips that are about as accurate as an astrology reading. No hate mob around back then though.

For WoW it was intended game design, where you needed loads of Nature Resist gear against Princess Huhuran in Ahn'Qiraj. The best NR gear dropped only from World bosses, which were instafarmed by 1 or 2 top guilds on each server, right after they respawned. The other option was low level farming. Later they added some NR tailoring recipes for AQ20 reputation.

Diablo on GoG? OHH YEAAAAHHH!!!

I'm the enemy, 'cause I like to think, I like to read. I'm into freedom of speech, and freedom of choice. I'm the kinda guy that likes to sit in a greasy spoon and wonder, "Gee, should I have the T-bone steak or the jumbo rack of barbecue ribs with the side-order of gravy fries?" I want high cholesterol! I wanna eat bacon, and butter, and buckets of cheese, okay?! I wanna smoke a Cuban cigar the size of Cincinnati in the non-smoking section! I wanna run naked through the street, with green Jell-O all over my body, reading Playboy magazine. Why? Because I suddenly may feel the need to, okay, pal? I've SEEN the future. Do you know what it is? It's a 47-year-old virgin sitting around in his beige pajamas, drinking a banana-broccoli shake, singing "I'm an Oscar Meyer Wiene"

So apparently Anthem first weapon is the most powerful on the game

How? How does that even happen?!

Level scaling systems.

I swear, half the games that try and implement a scaling system that covers their entire range end up with issues.

Sort of skimpy proof but makes sense to put those out there to get some cash.

I'm glad they went back to side-scrolling.

Y'know I'm not entirely sure why would they switch to generic third person action game in the first place, it's not like we're in early 2000s (more like late 1990s? Damn my memory's terrible) and every 3rd iteration of a platformer needs to be 3D to show off devs have mastered the tech

But obviously they haven't.

They had 3D Shadwen, and although I like that game, it's HARD. Not because 3D, but because escorting Lily without killing the guards is puzzle itself and time & place sensitive.

They could also made Trine 3D more like A Hat in Time, but side-view & 3D? It doesn't work.

Nice. I was scared the game got canned.

So it looks like Denuvo actually does eat your CPU cycles, thanks to DMC 5's Denuvo free developer fork being public for a few hours alongside the standard denuvoed exe. Up to 25% of your precious fps go straight to the DRM anti tamper. I haven't been so surprised since I last dropped something and it was accelerated towards the object of greatest local mass.

Or maybe it's all a plot by dastardly pirates to slander Denuvo's good name...

Pfft, massively missed opportunity.

With that attention to detail, this game is going to massively fail.

Civilization, in fact, grows more and more maudlin and hysterical; especially under democracy it tends to degenerate into a mere combat of crazes; the whole aim of practical politics is to keep the populace alarmed (and hence clamorous to be led to safety) by menacing it with an endless series of hobgoblins, most of them imaginary. - H.L. Mencken
