  1. I hope you guys have more to show us than elementals, kobolds and mindflayers. I mean, visually they look great, especially the elementals, but I was hoping for more originality than variations on a theme. Please tell me there are more creatures in the world than just bipedal humanoids. It's one of those areas where you could have stunned me with your creativity but didn't. I was just hoping for some more originality. Now, sure, you've not shown me your whole bestiary, but you did select these specific three for your presentation. Well I'm unimpressed.
  2. I really don't know if I should play the beta. On the one hand, I really want to help iron out any issues PoE might still have, provide feedback in case there are things I really don't like (or do), and get a bit of experience building characters. On the other hand, I don't want to get spoiled too much, or become too familiar with a game ending that "new and exciting" feel that games have when you first play them. I feel that if I want to debate about topics coming up, having some hands-on experience puts me in a better position to argue, but I wonder if that's needed. Advice?
  3. That is quite... strong statement. http://nwn2db.com/builds - here are 24,901 builds in total at the moment. And it's only public available builds. And I don't know how many builds are already deleted due to it's age. And finally, NWN2 is just one of the D&D games and there are a lot of classes, feats and other features aren't implemented. I've been browsing barbarian builds, I have yet to come across a high intelligence (14 on a heavily multiclassed barbarian was the max) proving my point.
  4. Obsidian has done several polls and always followed their own minds regardless. in the announcement forum there is a poll with a 75% rating for another kickstarter round, and yet, they've still decided not to follow the crowd. I think that shows quite well that they can make up their own minds and aren't designing by committee even when they do ask for our views.
  5. Here you go: http://forums.obsidian.net/topic/65107-no-romances-confirmed/?p=1417049 Rest of the thread is also On Topic.
  6. Hi namelessthree and welcome to the forums. Romance has been discussed extensively on these forums, you are certainly not alone in your views, but the decision has been made, I will see if I can look up Obsidians post about their decision, but let me paraphrase in advance: The team doesn't believe that with the time and resources it has devoted to Pillars of Eternity that it can deliver the quality romances the game would deserve. Adding romance options increases work needed exponentially because it would affect a lot of narrative and quest elements. Now, I'm not advocating for or against romances, just the messenger, sorry. I too, share your worry that the game might lean more towards its icewind dale heritage than its baldurs gate(2)/Planescape torment heritage, however, I also know that most of the dev interaction on this forum has been with Josh Sawyer, and less with Chris Avellone, who focuses more on the community following on different social media, so it's very possible my view is somewhat skewed. Even with this, however, I see enough great ideas, concepts and arguments coming from the developers that I am not worried. Pillars of Eternity will stand alone and apart from its heritage, and that is a good thing. I'm sorry for those who really wanted romances, but I can understand Obsidian's decision and by their arguments cutting romance will help devote more time to the rest of the dialogue and content quality.

  8. While it's impossible to integrate custom backstories into the game, I would think it awesome (perhaps for some future title) to have a large database of keywords or keyphrases to pick from. "exiled from home" "son of a prostitute" "orphaned"(bleh) "fought in the war" etc, so that you can pick and choose from a list of these, or write your own backstory and get notified if any of your keywords or phrases match the document (so you can confirm whether you want that box ticked by the game) It might make it more feasible to have your own custom backstory integrated into the game. Albeit imperfectly.
  9. How is this debate still going? We won guys! There is going to be an inspired reputation system which tracks various character traits and makes no moral judgements on your person, it leaves the moral judgement of your character traits to the individual interpretation of the NPC's in the game. We got what we wish for. Let's celebrate!
  10. in D&D you were pretty much shoehorned into certain builds though, because taking high intelligence for your barbarian or low wisdom for your monk was just plain stupid. In that sense PoE promises to give you a much broader range of charater builds than any D&D game ever had. Time will tell of course, but it sounds really promising.
  11. maybe someone wants to forget, so you could have volunteers for the process
  12. Location Abandonment is actually one of my biggest gripes in many games. the "you cleared this area now there is no reason to go back here" is as immersion breaking as it gets, the world will be stale and stagnant if going back to a location seems purposeless. You can solve this in a few ways, one is making the location unavailable, which I think is a shoddy solution, especially if there were still unresolved side-quests. Another solution, by far my favourite, and one I've arrived at through discussion on these forums, is that each area, or at least each quest-hub area, unlocks new content based on progression. Meaning that there are several points in the game where you can return to a previously "cleared" area to find it populated with new quests, more appropriate for your current standing in the world, or perhaps a narrative progression of a side-quest line, where the result of previous quests, combined with game progression has unlocked the sequel quest. remember that palace you couldn't enter in Defiance Bay when you were just a lil' tyke? Now that you've established some presence in twin elms, and upgraded the prestige of your stronghold, you may find it's open 20 hours into the game. Repeatable quests or content (like arenas) is another option, not really my favourite because it doesn't deliver you new experiences and who wants to do a repeat of anything other than for grinding? Important however is that if you do choose to keep an area accessible, that there is something for the player to do there, or a reason to move through it.
  13. I watched The Raid 2, and it was fantastic, the plot was ok, but at least not insultingly stupid like so many hollywood productions, the martial arts choreography was terrific, just beautiful barring maybe one or two minor flaws that are easily missed. It does have the Conservation of Ninjutsu trope but that is just easily forgiven because the combat is just such a visceral pleasure to look at. The Raid 2 has excellent pacing and inspired directing, I observed one shot I had never seen before, with the camera moving during a car chase from one car to another, inside through a window, and out through another. Just excellent. The Cinematography seemed to steal some inspiration from Park Chan-wook's style choices, but you can steal from worse directors. All in all, best movie I've seen so far this year.
  14. force multipliers that can take a few hits and keep standing, I think paladins are very powerful in combat.
  15. so the computer at work has no sound, so I turned on automatic captions, too funny, but not really useful. I'll watch it when I get back home.
  16. I think they are fair questions and while maybe not all of them can be answered directly, Obsidian can shed more light on the soul mechanics of eora.
  17. That's a very good decision IMO, and I'm very happy to hear it. Too often in games you are forced to pick up an item that doesn't quite fit your character because not using it is tantamount to gimping yourself.
  18. no class based strongholds, I believe, but you can upgrade it with different structures for different benefits.
  19. Good to know, I've bought but not played wasteland 1 for the same reason as Doppelschwert. I backed T:Ton at the level that also included Wasteland 2, so I wonder if that will include an early key.
  20. so no moneychangers then? I thought it would have been a good way to scale wealth across regions/powerlevel. (As you move to new locations, you need to collect wealth anew or use outrageous forex rates) A means to create a lore based reason for wealth staggering SA? Something Awful
  21. I think nothing should be taboo, I don't think Obsidian should care too much about sensitive sensibilities of its customers if it wants to have any artistic integrity. However if it doesn't add to the narrative or to gameplay it has no purpose and shouldn't be in the game. I highly doubt we'll see porn scenes in PoE, I just can't envision a scene where it would be relevant. (not precluding sexually explicit content, just think it is highly unlikely)
  22. Oh no! it's feature complete! Now what will I do on these forums? (update looks good, though the sea spray could maybe use some variation)
