  1. Slowly playing through the Lost Valley in Solasta. I am not feeling as connected to the new party. Annie the rogue had developed quite the personality through the main campaign and dlc, which nobody in the new party is reaching yet. Only Chrisophage, the impatient and constantly annoyed dragonkin paladin is standing out so far. It is interesting though that with just a simple system they got me to compare personalities in a player created party. It is a bit refreshing that I haven't encountered any Soraks (yet).

  2. Well of course West nor Russia were prepared for such a war, which is currently at play in UA. Why else would be Putin begging Kim for artillery shells, and why would still be West struggling to fulfill the promised number of shells to supply UA? Also, most of the drones currently supplied to the battlefield are made in UA and not in the West. Only thing which the west can provide enough to fulfill the needs is the mentioned GMLRS, which the UA started to use as a counter battery weapons for few months, and USA still have them enough for few years to use it that way.

  4. /sigh The old terminology debate. Didn't we already have this one 20 years ago when the forum was new??? Let me add some fuel to the fire and call RTS games for action games, the "strategy" part of the name being completely false advertising

  6. I can add to the recommendation, though it's been some time since I played both, especially KOTOR1. Neither of them are flawless but I found enough charm in both (though of different kind) to enjoy each. From Star Wars: I adore Jedi Outcast and Jedi Academy. Fallen Order and to lesser extend Jedi Survivor are also decent. If you have a joystick Tie Fighter/Xwing games are StarWars peak.

  7. The situation may look completely different depending on where you view it from, what is the level of your historical knowledge or how cynically jaded your world-view happens to be (and of course there are other factors, too). There is no question that I side with the ones who regard Ukraine as defending far more than its territory and culture. It's very hard to say what the potential repercussions of the war and its eventual result may be, but there is no question that Ukraine is, in a way, also defending Finland[*], along with the countries you mention. As for what is laughable, I think there's an observation by the late David Foster Wallace that bears repeating every now and then: we in the west have managed to create a culture where no writer, for instance, dares to bring forth a novel that sincerely discusses questions of morality and heroism (in the, say, Dostoevsky vein), but ridicule of those concepts is very common. This is not meant to imply that Ukraine is an unblemished good guy, because the country had some pretty serious problems before the war and probably hasn't rid itself of any of them, but it certainly is a small guy that doesn't deserve to be obliterated by an unhinged big guy. [*] Although Russia's antagonism towards and more or less overt attacks on Finland have actually increased since the war began. Russia, of course, and to absolutely no one's surprise, considers that Finland is the aggressor in every single case.

  8. It might be laughable to you, and it might be over the top, but Ukraine is also defending my country, from getting even deeper under Russian influence. I would say, the same goes for Baltics, Moldova, Kazakhstan and Georgia. And I am very grateful to them, as I do not want to go through same pro-russian secret police harassment as my family ever again…

  9. Ive settled on playing Wasteland 3 over everything else. I love how the choices are I that game... I enjoy thinking I made the wrong decision everytime I make a decision. There either isn't an outright "good" choice to make... that or I always make bad decisions... either way I wish more games would follow the "road to hell is paved in good intentions" saying. New Vegas did this very well, wasteland 3 might even do it weller. More well... better

  10. https://foreignpolicy.com/2023/07/11/ukraine-democracy-wartime-elections-russia-zelensky/ No there are valid and legitimate reasons to cancel the elections, to quote "Whether objections to the postponement of Ukraine’s elections come from a place of hostility or sympathy, they fail to understand that voting during this war would be legally, practically, and institutionally impossible. Ukraine is under martial law, with constant threat of Russian bombs and many of its people displaced. Postponing elections was not a function of any fear on Zelensky’s part, since his approval ratings have soared during wartime. A country under a full-scale invasion and occupation is simply in no position to vote "

  13. I think it's apt criticism of the accessibility of the genre, but not necessarily apt description of the game itself. There is definitely strategy in RTS, but one needs a high degree of manual competence and even matchup for it to come into play. From my time with Starcraft - yes, most games came down to who was more manually efficient at managing macro. That's why I do think turn-based system, that erases gap created by real time interactivity, is a more "pure" strategy experience, but I do find a lot of joy in the hybrid RTS experience.

  15. My priorities are: 1) People not getting killed right now 2) People not getting killed in the future. So a fluff piece about making this seem like a liberation where Jews are finally allowed to pray again is offensive to my moral compass.

  16. Cookie thing is annoying. Search N7 day 2023 on youtube, but it's just 30 sec of some helmeted person in N7 trenchcoat walking, cut to Mass Effect logo. Yeah, probably MP, what else? They already have a new game that's not going to see daylight, ever.

  17. There was a time when music was not everywhere, albums were expensive and we were rather young, so we were quite limited in what we could hear or listen to. During this time, there was a period when I could only hear Def Leppard's superb Pyromania album at a friend's place. That time may not have lasted more than one summer, but since we were rather young, that time is still strongly fixed in my memory. So whenever I hear this track, I remember the rooms at my friend's place, I remember how we played cards and listened to Pyromania, among other things. I think this song is still brilliant. The extended middle section is particularly great. The 1980s were bad in many respects, but when it comes to melodic rock music that is more complex than it sounds (just pay attention to how cleverly Def Leppard switches keys), the 1980s were marvelous.

  19. Zaluzhny was strongly against the much earlier offensive in the northeast, arguing that it would drain resources from a much more necessary offensive in the south. While the offensive in the northeast was very succesful, it can still be argued that Zaluzhny was probably right, but Zelensky, as president, had the final say.

  20. Despite being "pro choice" by nature, I can see the logic of R vs W not really being in the constitution, but something that is up to the state governments to decide on. As long as the states don't "overreach" and try to prevent their citizens to visit other states or prosecute medical staff other states for violating their own, stricter laws. It's supposedly a free country and people should be free to travel and have medical procedures done at a location of their choice. Just my $0.25 and as somebody without a womb to boot.

  22. You can add Leningrad, Unternehmen Zitadelle (Kursk) and the battle of Berlin to the list. All strategic victories... gained at loss ratios between 2:1 and 5:1 depending on the battle. As said, throw enough bodies at the fight, and you may just make the other guy despair and give up.

  23. I am completely unfamiliar with those, so can't comment. I think a game can have same elements as Disco and not be roleplaying game, if roleplaying isn't a central focus of the game (and by roleplaying I mean being encouraged to think and make decisions as to who your character is and what he/she thinks - not just inhabiting a set in stone character with occasional branching story choices). For example Pentiment has some light RPG elements, but those are infrequent and just aren't impactful on the experience enough for me to consider it an RPG.

  25. The gameplay of Disco Elysium is just rng dice rolls against checks, barring presentation that's exactly the kind of stuff that goes on with other RPGs that use character skills more than player skills to determine success. It's a RPG, a damn fine one. As an annoying David Lynch fan, I will always crank up Inland Empire. To tie this to the thread topic, I think BG3 is a distant second to Disco Elysium in terms of non-combat gameplay (much of the distance because Act 3, which swerves so much into combat encounters it's almost shocking) and both are the only (recent) games I can think of where failing at checks is entertaining as opposed to just losing. I think pretty much any RPG with the implementation of skills and rng based success would be served well with greater focus on making the dialogue actual gameplay instead of "pass the diplomacy check or fight" like the Owlfinder games or NWN2. Also more talking animals or inanimate objects please.

  26. TBH not much surprising for us, who got some experience with “Russian World” (read occupation). I always took the word “exhaustion” in connection with Russian army from people like Girkin as “running out of bodies” and not as getting tired in combat in before rotation

  28. I definitely think the attempts to tie anti-Zionism and anti-semitism together are definitely going to fuel the latter as Israel's actions become more indefensible. But I have some hope that the efforts of anti-zionist Jews attempting to disentangle Zionism from Judaism is going to bear some fruit in people differentiating the state of Israel from Jews as a whole. Just anecdotally but I have seen a consistent push against anti-semitism by folks showing solidarity with Palestinians, with it being made clear the issue is settler-colonialism and not Judaism in what's wrong with Israel, and anti-semites like blue check dip****s or provocateurs not having much of a space in the actions. That's more than I can say about a lot of defenders of Israel, who do not seem to have a problem with some of the most repugnant ghouls making common cause with them. I don't want to draw you back in against your will, so feel free to just see this as bouncing off a sound board.

  29. I randomly read the first book this summer. The aes sedai lady (can't remember any names of any characters (goes to show how much I enjoyed it)) explains to the young women that basically the whole village healer / midwife role helped the old healer before them control her magic, and guide them to control theirs in turn. I guess quite a few female wilders would fall into similar roles in other villages - becoming the wise-woman without anyone, not even themselves, realizing that this role and all that comes with it, provides the structure they need.

  31. I like it when zombies somehow never managed to lose their hats off their head when they died, or in all the days/months they've been lurching around as a zombie. Or maybe zombies covet hats as reminders of better days and go around picking them up, moaning "braiiiinnnnsss, braiiiinsss ... haaaaaaaat!" It's even better if the game lets you loot/take their hat to wear yourself. Not that they typically allow that, but just saying.

You may try mantras like these to help you accept your doubts: These are my doubts, There are many like them, But these ones are mine. I am at one with my doubts, That are with me on this adventure. This is me breathing.
