  3. I was listening to a presentation given by a retired high-ranking intelligence officer, and it contained a couple of interesting points concerning some of the reasons Russia decided to attack Ukraine. For instance, he pointed out that outside of Moscow and St. Petersburg, much of Russia still qualifies as a developing country; apparently one third of all Russians still only have an outhouse, when it comes to their toilet facilities. The rampant looting of washing machines and such testifies to the fact how backward much of Russia continues to be. Russia has nothing to contribute to the current technological advances in the world -- except raw materials. This has created an enormous reservoir of jealousy and bitterness towards "the West", and what makes Ukraine particularly annoying is the fact that Ukraine has managed to make a significant move towards becoming a more Western country -- even if corruption, for instance, still remains a huge problem and Ukraine is obviously nowhere near to qualifying for the EU. Ukraine is, for Russia, doubly culpable, for not only has it got closer to "the West", it has also simultaneously made a clear move away from what Russia regards as their trinity: Russia, Belarus, Ukraine. This is unforgivable. (Interestingly: Belarus would almost certainly make the same move if it could, i.e. if it wasn't ruled by Putin's puppet, with everything that that entails.) There are all sorts of strategic, economic, imperialistic and probably just personal (Putin) factors that also help to explain the war, but the former officer wanted to draw attention to these considerations, which are also significant. Also, there's this today:

  5. The dlcs are better than the base game and are, certainly for dlc, pretty long and involved. Their issue is that the base game isn't quite good enough for 'more of the same, but better' to be really worth it at the point you're likely to play them. So yeah, a bit of s struggle at points. Main issue with the base game: just too much combat. It's certainly not that the combat is bad per se, it's OK; but it's too long, too much, too repetitive and there's not really enough other stuff post combat to make it worthwhile. Then add in respawning so you get to do a lot of the combat again... Outer Worlds is the absolute classic example of a game where nothing is really good, but also nothing is really bad. Which ends up being a bit disappointing because most Obsidian games even when they had significant problems also had stuff which was really good to balance it out. Still, the building blocks are there and a sequel with the quality of the dlcs and maybe 2/3 the combat would be very much worthwhile.

  6. I think it would be nice if, at some point, we could unlock the possibility to have a friendly version of one of the droids that guard the labs. The way I figured it, we would be able to assign it to a base, and it would stay there acting as a "butler", helping us with micromanagement. We could order it to do simple tasks such as going to gather X amount of a resource (limited to collecting basic tier 1 stuff, like sap or fibers); or to automatically operate spinning wheels, ovens and such by emptying them when full and feeding them new raw materials until X amount of finished products is done; or to repair damaged structures. Possibly, we could even place blueprints and order it to build them from scratch, as long as it's able to find the required resources within a certain range. During raids, it would provide some help by taking part in the defense (within its possibilities). If destroyed in combat, it would just be "disabled" and could later be repaired with the repair tool. How to unlock it? The way I imagined, in the Oak Lab there would be a few docking stations housing inoperative droids. Bringing chips to BURG.L would progressively unlock the ability to activate said droids one by one by purchasing them with raw science in the shop, and possibly later unlock and purchase new more advanced functions for them (or better droid models).

  7. Yeah, I think Wisconsin is especially bad where over half the state voted for Democrats but they only have 30% of seats. Though I could be confusing national reps with local there. Regardless, it's clearly unequal. The big takeaway is that most people are very turned off by the culture war being waged by Republicans and by Trump. While Trump may get dumped (we can excuse a coup, but draw the line at losing a midterm), I think the GOP donors are mostly coastal elites who live in blue cities and are obsessed with culture war stuff so I doubt they're going to drop the panics they've been pushing very easily. This is probably a boon for Democrats in electoral terms, but a very dangerous thing for regular people who don't want to be gunned down. RIP Club Q. New York was a combination of (failed) gerrymandering and a fake crime wave promoted by the media. I'm not too sure what to think about Florida, my gut tells me Democrats went to close to the center there by getting a former republican and a cop to run, which is likely to not to appeal to more leftwing folks while centrists and right-leaning folks already have Rhonda Sanctimonious and Little Marco to vote for. Who else would run? Bernie is done at this point and I think AOC is too young. At this point I don't see Biden not running or anyone to replace him. Well if we figure that every dollar of propery damage is worth 10-100 lives, then breaking several windows is worse than the Holocaust. Antifa confirmed for the real nazis. Of course, you don't have to trust that she is a credible scientist. Feel free to dig through the research yourself and pretend the internet makes you an expert in everything.

  11. It looks like I misunderstood the common statuses in Teams and other collaboration platforms. I thought "away" means the person is currently not at the keyboard and "busy" means the person is currently, well, busy with something important. Clearly that cannot be right, otherwise I would not have three missed (internal) calls after being away from the keyboard for five minutes. I suspect continuous use of coke might cause color blindness. Semi in-joke here, but the department in question is always on major overdrive to the point where we started calling them the coke smurfs, and they always want red lines drawn with green ink and ideally now. Going to make myself a coffee now and go have lunch before changing my status back to online, then we can talk about inflating a baloon in the form of a kitten. Maybe.

  12. We have bows and crossbows, we have special arrow types, we have silk ropes, we have rope anchors. So, I guess it would make sense to have a new special type of rope arrow? REQUIREMENTS Depending on the allowed uses, it should be a tier 2 or 3 item. It would be a single use item, lost once shot. I thought the recipe for each arrow should include: -feather arrows (splinter if locked at tier 3) -silk rope (10 to 20 units, depending on balancing) -glue (1 or 2 each) -(alternative to glue) a wall anchor POSSIBLE USES: 1) QUICK ZIPLINE CREATION shooting a rope arrow while standing near an available zipline anchor would immediately create a zipline between said anchor and the point where the arrow lands. Basically, this would allow the creation of a zipline from one side only, without the need to build an anchor on the other side beforehand. In order to keep it balanced and not make the old building system obsolete, the length of the rope should limit the maximum range of the arrow, and thus the max allowed length of the quick zipline. (Optional: the anchoring point created by the arrow may perhaps be temporary, requiring further resources to be cemented into a permanent installation.) 2) COMBAT: BINDING THE TARGET When shot at a creature, the rope arrow would instantly create a bind between the point the shooter is standing and the target, preventing it from moving any further. The arrow itself should only deal basic damage (or even less). The bind should be temporary, but last at least twice the time it usually takes for arrows to drop off. The target would still be able to move and fight, it just wouldn't be able to move outside of the boundaries created by the rope until the effect expires. Standing closer to the target would create a shorter binding, leaving the target with less room for movement (higher risk, higher effectiveness). Shooting multiple rope arrows from different angles would eventually block the target in place (until the effect expires). Of course, it would NOT work against bosses. Useful applications: -Great tactical tool for ranged builds, both main and support; -Restrict the movement of the target, staying safe from jumping/charge attacks by just standing out of range; -Help to flee from an excessively strong opponent, preventing it from chasing -Possible effective combo with grenades, gas arrows and other AOE weapons; -Bind flying creatures to the ground, within melee range; -Easier to catch otherwise fast and elusive creatures, such as scarabs. What do you think?

  15. I haven't watched any games, but the Iranian players and spectators used the opportunity for some "anti government" behavior. But that is probably more for the politics thread (all the women wearing no headscarves, the players visibly refusing to sing the national anthem, signs and placards showing support for the demonstrations at home etc.) Edit: The Danish journalist getting threatened by Qatari security is old news, but people wearing rainbow hats and scarves are being threatened at the entrance to the stadiums, Qatar backing down from previous promises of a tolerant and inclusive WC (making it a PR disaster, which bean in earnest when they suddenly changed their mind on allowing beer in the stadiums). In short, the Qatari government lying through its teeth and showing itself from its worst side, justifying the criticism of FIFA for allowing Qatar to buy the WC. At least Russia hadn't invaded Crimea yet when they were handed them the previous WC.

  17. It's the only AAA RPG of the past ~15 years I played and enjoyed without any reservation (well, with the exception of the so-so gunplay). Luckily I've yet to play all the DLC yet, and they're said to be some of the best ever developed. But look what's happened since even with Fallout in isolation. (The devs of these games increasingly develop RPGs for players who aren't actually that into the once core values of the genre in an attempt to ever increase their target audience). Fallout New Vegas should have spawned at least a few AAA games that tried to top it at its own game -- but no. Speaking of which, I've yet to play Outer Worlds too. But what I've seen about it, it seems a stripped down and lesser version of NV (and there's even a quest compass leading you all over the place like witcher sensing breadcrumbs, despite the game not even being open world as such -- bugbear of mine). As there's more choice now than there was when NV came out, I went with different games so far.

  18. it's not a big reward, but IF you did the diplomacy thing with indrah in act 1, then with a successful completion o' the quest you are able to initiate a crusade project which results in all your generals acquiring a level o' master of maneuver. as such, this is a quest which is best done as early as possible in act v. also, while has possible been fixed, if you looted enemy corpses before the end of combat, it were possible to generate a fair amount o' gold from this quest-- potential infinite amounts. if you wait to loot after combat, then bodies disappear and so do their gear, but this is one o' the few instances o' respawning enemies in the game and it is/were possible to manipulate the rewards by stacking bodies improbable high and taking their gear before they evaporated. 'course in act v is unlikely you are strapped for cash, so... functional, nothing is lost by skipping, but if you really want the extra master o' maneuver, and if you are funding your crusade projects by buying material points and the like, then in the unlikely event you are able to trigger this quest early in act v, then there are a few potential (and possible exploitive) rewards. HA! Good Fun!

  19. I guess it is too late to back out now: I have all Manowar albums up to and including Warriors of the World, and I listened to them a lot when I was a good deal younger, and I know most of their lyrics by heart. They also have 'fantastic' cover art, and in various metal magazines the cover of Into Glory Ride was ranked rather highly in 'worst cover art of all time' lists. For me, Manowar's biggest draw is Eric Adams, and insfoar they share something with Evanescence - neither group would be all that remarkable without their charismatic and talented vocalists. I do not know how it is nowadays after their split (rather nicely put, considering he was fired after being accused of posessing child pornography, for which he was convicted and currently serves prison time), but in the days of yore a good Manowar concert was one where Karl Logan only hit a couple of wrong notes. Anyway, while All Men Play On Ten is inherently silly, there are Manowar songs with worse lyrics. Kill with Power from Hail to England comes to mind, or the infamous Pleasure Slave from Kings of Metal. My favorite performance is the live version of Master of the Wind from Hell On Stage. Song in spoilers because the cover art is slightly not safe for work. Not very surprising, it puts Eric Adams front and center, and puts the band where it belongs, in the background, playing along. Joey de Maio likes to take credit for that, after all, amplifiers that go up to eleven appeared after the album was released, but it is much more likely they came out in response to This Is Spinal Tap than Manowar, both the album and the mockumentary were released in 1984 after all. Sigh. Another post like that and I might lose my street credibility as poster of utter drivel, although Manowar could easily be argued as drivel when one does not like heavier rock or metal. Hm, how to offset that? I time coded the video to the song part, feel free to watch everything: Although the lullabye is catchy as hell and the lyrics are hilarious. Cascada's cover of How Do You Do should suffice: Fantastic 'live' performance.

  20. Narutaru 7-8 There are so many subtle hints of the creatures and the plot that I can't even remember. Things like how they relate to the children or why the effects are different. And I think one of the bad guys mentioned something about Akira that sounded weird. Unfortunately, I had to watch the episode in a hurry since I had a meeting right after lunch so I didn't have time to check on it again. If the military are not stupid they should eventually find out who is connected to these creatures and deal with them in the easy way, that is, directly. Poor Akira. She is in a far worse state than Shiina. And Shiina has her father, while Sakura would be better far from hers. Well, that is one way to put it. The ending song: "and let's kiss until it becomes an obsession." I saw somebody on Youtube saying that some fans got angry about hints of a Denji-Makima romance, so I think there is definitely something bad about her. Not to mention he now revealed he is only 16. We need a zipper, a Feng Shui and a baby-generator-laptop devils.

  21. It's hard to think of watching the games in this tournament. Lamentably. I'm not counting on Brazil. They've got attacking prowess for sure, but as Argentina so aptly demonstrated, that doesn't amount to much if you can't defend properly -- although it has to be said that the Brazilian goalkeeper is up there with the very best, unlike the Argentinian one. When I played the game, I was good at long shots and free kicks and had a fair bit of technique with them(*), so I'm rooting for Xherdan Shaqiri of Switzerland who has demonstrated some serious skills with that stuff. I won't watch the game, though. (*) Obviously at a level that's utter rubbish compared to the World Cup, but good at the level I was at.

  23. The utter silliness of that reminds me this equally silly song. The lyrics are pure gold. Highly recommended -- and do pay attention to the profundity of the message. (No way I can ever do the scream before the second chorus. I don't have pipes like that.) And yes, these guys haven't realized that all proper gear goes up to eleven.

  24. I just love the nickname Rhonda Sanctimonious... but he didn't back away from the culture war stuff either so I don't think the election was a repudiation of that. As far as Biden, I dunno, I never really liked the guy and he seemed not to understand the political realities of the election in which he was running. I think now he gets that the today's Republican party isn't the one he was used to working with and he has progressed on a few issues but I'm concerned about his age, because he doesn't seem as sharp and the fact that he's better outside of the spotlight, which isn't necessarily a bad thing but you also never know what rambling nonsense may fall out of his mouth when he starts speaking. As far as replacements go AOC is never going to be it unless the country changes somewhat drastically, Bernie's year was 2016, dunno about Mayor Pete and Kamala either... hence my complaint about the Dem's bench. I haven't given it a lot of thought, kinda just thinking "out loud."

  25. Noah Caldwell-Gervais? Yeah, he's pretty cool. One channel that should have more subscribers is Matt Chat. I can understand why he doesn't -- he covers a lot of oldschool (RPG) stuff, including in-depth interviews. Plus he's an academic more than an entertainer. There's no fancy editing, no joking, just a cool guy who loves RPGs, a camera and the games and developers. Still, yeah. Oh yeah, it's definitely not a game I'd recommend if you aren't into the mood for it. If you have the time, I'd recommend playing it during the holidays.... you'll understand later why.

  26. Its a funny thing, you target energy infrastructure with missiles and that energy infrastructure is damaged And its just another example of the cowardly nature of the Russian military, they cant win the conventional war so they resort to targeting civilian infrastructure. Thats why they deserve to seen as a state sponsor of terrorism

  35. I've read the next volume and can confirm it gets worse, at least in terms of what is happening to the kids. Poor Akira. Edit: Chainsaw Man 7 So I was expecting a long fight, but it looks like the Eternity Devil doesn't last as long as eternity. Denji finally gets a kiss but.......swallows more than he can chew. The show is great, so far I'd say the biggest weakness is that the devils aren't particularly interesting, but I've been spoiled by JoJo where the monster Stand user of the week is incredibly memorable.

  37. It's not a bad game, and yeah, some of the design is cool. As said, the interface and HUD is AMAZING to this day. It's fully integrated into the game experience, with everything shown in a very non-instrusive way, rather than how things have evolved since. It's as if Looking Glass Studios and their gradual evolution to Thief had died for nothing with games CONSTANTLY reminding that you're just playing a stupid video game. Dead Space: Next-Gen AAA Gaming (this isn't actually Elden Ring, but a popular mock of how Elden Ring would have looked liked had it been developed by Ubisoft et all).

  38. Some updates: Conversation & Quest node links can now be deleted, just click the red button: If there's only one remaining link to a node, a confirmation popup will be displayed. If the last link to a node is deleted, the node will still remain in the Nodes list but won't be accessible from the GUI. (I'm not sure that I want to implement some clean-up logic here, maybe at some point expose a list of all nodes and let the user manually delete unplaced nodes from there?) Regarding String Tables (including some stuff I've not documented yet because lazyness) If a mod has StringTable entries with indexes that exceed the highest vanilla indexes, then the lowest of those indexes would be used as the "mod start index". If the user tries to add a new entry and a start index hasn't been detected, a new value between 1'000'000 and 2'000'000'000 will be assigned instead. (Always ending with '000' to indicate in the stringtable files that it's the start index). After that, the new StringTable entries will be added starting from that index. High values and wide ranges are necessary to minimize the risk of mods generating overlapping keys, but won't look nice in the editor... I've now made it so that if a start index is detected, entries exceeding that number will be shortened down to "k+x" in the gamedata editor, where x is the offset from the start index. An example from Spoils of Caed Nua:
