  3. Yeah, but Dutch doesn't really connect to Netherlands in any phonemic sense. I mean, we could call you Nethers, but that sounds a bit below the belt. edit: Found this interesting while researching this terrible joke I was making: https://www.dictionary.com/e/demonym/

  8. Yeah no, they visit Amsterdam for that. That's the only place that really promotes itself with the red light districts and "coffee shops", and most tourists literally don't know Amsterdam is in or even connected to the Netherlands, or "Holland". Believe me, I worked retail in Amsterdam for 6 months. Their flights and tours and travel packets are marketed as trips to "Amsterdam" full stop. Half don't even know they're in Europe. As for my problem with it, it has nothing to do with my views on tourism. Holland is only the name of two provinces, North and South Holland. These two provinces? Well, lets just say calling Dutch people "Hollanders" is comparable to calling every American "Florida Man".

  10. Belongs to the 90s: that depends heavily on the implementation of the TB combat. Deadfire's implementation isn't native so it's normal that it doesn't address all quirks. For example the fights have too many combatants in TB mode which makes them take forever. But Turn Based combat is the original way to play all major Pen & Paper Role Playing Games out there (on which cRPGs are based on). So if you "convert" a known Pen & Paper experience to a computer game it's the most natural thing to implement TB there, too. If you don't do it you have to change the ruleset (e.g. the attack speed mechanics). For players who also played Pen & Paper RPGs TB mode should be the most convenient way to play a cRPG. Because they know it. People who started with Infinity Engine games will feel that RTwP is the most convenient way to play. It's about familiarisation and what you're used to. RTwP leads to faster combat of course - especially if you let AI handle things - which is great if you have a lot of enemies and/or party members. But it also tends to be a lot more messy and obscure. That's the reason why Obsidian had to implement stuff like visual effects transparency on pause and take away a party member: it became too messy (higher difficulties with more enemies). One of the core complaints about PoE was how messy the combat was. Why was it messier than the infinity engine games? That has to do with another complaint that many (non-D&D-grog) players had with them: fighters, rogues etc. can't do much besides auto-attacking while casters get all the cool stuff. So in later cRPGs and also PoE those "mundane" classes got more active abilities. But having to execute more abilities in RtWP makes it more messy. You will pause a lot more and you'll also have a lot more vfx during fights. The more active abilites you have to trigger as a player and the more you have to pause the more the game gravitates to TB mode. You'll have dedicated phases for taking action and move and the following vfx fireworks which won't interfere with the movement and action taking of another character. Add some action points or something and you'll also have a more tactical approach vs. the more action-oriented one RTwP gives you. With a good AI you can help RTwP to regain footing: less pausing is needed, you loose less time and the combat feels more fluid again. But the AI has to be good so that the player doesn't feel the need to constantly correct its decisions. I personally prefer Deadfire with RTwP (without AI since it can't compete with my decision-making at all even if the scripting feature is awesome) but I can hardly see why TB combat in general should be inferior. Would Deadfire have come with TB mode as native implementation (and taylored encounter design etc.) I'm sure I would have used that. Because I would have learned to play the game that way right from the start. Here's an example of RTwP vs. TB from the same developer (Subset Games): "Faster than Light" uses RTwP while its successor "Into the Breach" has TB mechanics. It doesn't feel absurd nor like something from the 90s at all. It's just a game that works best with TB mechanics. Imagine "Battle Brothers" with its 12+ party members as RTwP game instead of TB. What a wild mess that would be. It wouldn't work. After all it boils down to personal preference. I guess if you like Action RPG mechanics in general you also don't have much problems with RTwP. If Diablo and stuff is too hectical for you I assume you'd like TB better. Just a random thought though... Deadfirewas build as a RTwP game. That it works ok with TB mode is a sign how robust TB mechanics generally are (or can be due to the rigid slices into which combat gets divided). RTwP can be fun but it's definitely not as robust. A few changes here and there (more abilities, more vfx and more combatants) can make it unpleasant to play - it becomes more chaotic. You have to fine-tune it a lot more then. So any addition to the combat can mean you'd have to tune the RTwP mechanics again. I presume that is difficult and resource-hungry and that may be a reason why developers prefer to implement TB over RTwP (partly answering the question "why oh why?"). I can only speak from my own experience as a software engineer though. I haven't implemented RTwP not TB combat - but I have experience with real time vs. sheduled systems or asynchronous vs . synchronized systems and the first ones aren't nearly as robust - way more prone to errors. Also - and this might be the biggest motivation to push TB in many different games: it plays a lot easier on consoles. RTwP is not nice when played with a traditional console setup (TV + controller on a couch).

  12. Yeah, I can do that too essentially with RTwP by slowing combat to its slowest setting or pausing more consistently. I hate having to wait a bunch of turns until I can control my main character, while enemy AI runs away each turn and I have to chase them down spending action points, hit them once, and then wait a couple minutes until I have a chance to strike at them again (for example). It's absurd and feels as though it belongs strictly in the 90s with the amount of time it unnecessarily eats up compared to alternative combat systems.

  13. ...followed up with Aaron Rodgers and the offense looking like absolute utter garbage against the 32nd passing defense. Nice! (e): As is a yearly tradition, I have passed away during an insanely needlessly anxiety-inducing Packers victory. RIP Bartimaeus. Worst top 2, possible 1 seed team I can remember seeing, but we *do* have a bye week.

  14. Eh, I'd say most parents with little kids who like electronic toys are people who grew up with a rapidly expanding gaming scene. I'm approaching mid-life now and I still remain astonished that people I grew up with are now sporting offspring that are approaching their teens, and many of these people were avid gamers like me when they were younger.

  20. The problem with XBOX's befuddling naming scheme isn't a problem for you or me. They can call it the XBOX Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious (thank God for copy & paste) for all I care. If I go to pick one up (unlikely, but who knows) I will understand what systyem I am picking up because I am a gamer and I follow this stuff. The problem is when random mom or dad who gives zero ****s about gaming goes to buy one for little Timmy and gets utterly confused because multiple machines share the same or highly similar names.

  21. Why hello there. The name's Gaylor Stonks. Let me introduce myself: Very High Charm Very High Intelligence High Perception Average Dexterity Low Strength Low Temperament Tier 1 Perks: The Negotiator, High Maintenance, Strider, Cheetah, Slow the World, Quick and the Dead. Tier 2 Perks: Snake Oil Salesman, Soliloquy, Scanner, The Reaper. Tier 3 Perk: Revenge. Flaw: Far-sighted. Main skills: Dialogue, Science. Secondary skills: Long Guns, Lockpick, Hack, Determination. Not a single point in those awfully primitive Melee or Defense skills, thank you very much. Gaylor is a man of class, and a shameless opportunist to boot. He speaks with the refined elegance of a bohemian who's never had to work a day in his life, instead having spent his time lazily attending university lectures on particle physics and economic theory while talking his fellow students' ear off. Knowledge and wealth, the two facets of power. That's not to say Gaylor can't get his hands a little dirty now and then. He is a fair hand with a lockpick and knows his way around computers. It's just that he prefers to finger-wag and ass-cover his way out of any unpleasantries, letting his loyal companions pick up the slack instead. And if push does comes to shove, Gaylor's honeyed words are backed with nuclear weapons. It started out as a regular Plasma Rifle that he reappropriated from a cupboard in the Cannery. The astute observer may note that instead of superheated plasma it launches globs of concentrated acid, thanks to a Mag2Melt modification he bought at a huge discount. The weapon's high base damage lends itself well to the armor-piercing qualities of the Corrosive effect, and to top it off it has been outfitted with an ExactoSight which makes this synergy even more potent. The result is a reliable big iron that blows a large, smoking hole in whatever you point it at. In Gaylor's hands it becomes even more formidable due to his beefy Science skill, his keen eye for critical hits and weak spots, and his borderline supernatural time dilation ability. This removes the need for unbecoming sneak attacks or fancy tactical positioning. Even on Supernova difficulty Gaylor can just stand still and vaporize his enemies one by one, and run like the wind to recharge his meter while his companions mop up any remaining stragglers. Sure, the lack of regenerating health hurts his economy, and his gun is neither cheap to reload nor tinker with, but money is as air to Gaylor. He can rub two bit cartridges together and create a third. This lets him deck out his posse in the best gear available, keeping them safe as he slithers and slips his way around the galaxy to make even more money for himself. If only he could romance that absolute daddy of a Vicar his life would be perfect, but that's what DLCs are for. When you think quality of life, think Stonks. Gaylor Stonks.

  23. I don’t see an issue with this one: there has been no sign of intelligent alien life, beside humans. In OW aliens meddling in human affairs is just as far fetched as it is currently in ours. The reason why the concept of alien is far fetched, isn’t that they are from outer space, but that there is no recorded evidence of other intelligent life forms.

  24. Ah just found this area I'll list my ideas here. Suggestions: - Would be nice to have a dynamic flashlight on the armor enabled by holding the crouch button. - A manual quick save option (PS4) would be great to save time. Maybe add standstill 1hr wait time. - In the weapons inventory it would be useful if you have a double up of the same weapon (with the same stats) to be in one slot saying x2. - Some type of feature in the inventory to "Lock" weapons / items so they don't show up in the sell menu for vendors and traders. - In the consumables inventory it can take a long time to look through for "heal %" items. Maybe add a health symbol (for example same symbol area like shock weapons have) on those or add a new arrange order options. - On the compass bar could you add small grey dots to show dead bodies that haven't been looted yet. When your companions kill a big group of enemies it's not always clear where the bodies are. - Option to Set a custom "Waypoint" maker on the map menu. Bug: - When in the workbench menu the "compare" weapons feature doesn't work correctly. It allows you still to press L3 (PS4) to set a marker but only "one" not "two" the feature doesn't work correctly.

  25. I wanna suggest adding the option to change our character haitsyle at Edgewater barbershop, being stuck with the look from the character creation menu is underwhelming. In my case I had my character have a beard in accordance for him being frozen for ~70 years, a beard that he would shave as soon as he gets the chance, only to be faced with the fact that its not a current feature in the game, please consider adding it!

  27. Charm/Dominate/Confusion spells are insanely good. They create a buffer between you and your enemies, taking the heat away from you and allowing you to damage the other dudes. Charming/Dominating/Confusing more or less = a chance to cast summon spell in terms of effect, except it has the benefit of taking enemies away from combat. Be a bit careful though with passive/active AoE buffs that your own dudes put out. I went through the spell lists and these are the ones that I tend to cast most often when I use both classes: Wizard Level 1: – Chill Fog (long duration blind, combine with combusting wounds) – Eldritch Aim (+20 accuracy, to be cast before CC, stacks with devotions for faithful) – Slicken (AoE prone) – Spirit Shield (Good if you need concentration in a pinch – Wizard's Double (With hardened Arcane Veil you'll be more or less unhittable – Combine with Draining Wall!) – Concelhauts Parasitic Staff (Great in early game) Level 2: – Bewildering Spectacle (Useful in early game before Confusion at level 4, aoe Confuse) – Binding Web (Combine with Druid's form of the Delemgan) – Combusting Wounds (Combine with any non-DoT repeat damage spell/ability/attack, loads of damage!) – Curse of Blackened Sight (Party friendly long duration AoE blind, use when things too messy for chillfog) – Fetid Caress (Decent single target paralyses) – Miasma of Dull Mindedness (Good to soften up before will attacking spell) Level 3 – Deleterious Alacrity (One of the best buffs in the game, cuts recovery in half – with 0 armor penalty leads to no recovery for spells) – Expose Vulnerabilities (Better than dropping a fireball) – Kalakoth Minor Blights (With Blast, Penetrating Blast + Combusting Wounds + Deleterious Alacrity + expose vulnerabilities will pressure cook enemies) – Llengrath's Displaced Image (Good buff if under duress) Level 4 – Confusion (Great AoE confusion, party friendly) – Maura's Writhing Tentacles (Very good, keeps dudes locked down) – Ninagauth's Shadowflame (One of the best spells in the game, fast cast AoE Paralyse) – Ninagauth's Death Ray (Decent single target damage with good might) – Pull of Eora (Use to suck people for Barbarians/Citzals Spirit Lance) – Wall of Flame (great for interrupt/combusting wounds) Level 5 – Blast of Frost (Good nuke) – Arkemyr's Wondrous Torment (For when you really need a will spell to land) – Call to Slumber (One of the best AoE CCs in the game) – Malignant Cloud (Good Raw aoe damage, combine with – Ninagauth's Bitter Mooring (Good damage) – Ryngrim's Enervating Terror (Great Debuff) – Wall of Force (Good for combusting Wounds/Interrupt) – Citzals Spirit Lance (Has an AoE effect, does great damage) Level 6 – Gaze of the Adragan (Probably best CC spell in the game, petrified targets take 2x damage) – XXX Blunt Wisdom (Insane damage weapon summon, but gotten very late in game) – Ninagauth's Freezing Pillar (Good damage) Level 7 – Concelhaut's Crushing Doom (Insane single target prone, made for messing with dragons) – XXX Siphoning Image (Very good protection spell, gotten late) – Wall of Draining (Insanely good spell, can get infinite duration buffs = near invulnerability) – Chaotic Orb (Good when there's two targets) Level 8 – Kalakoth's Freezing Rake (Insane Damage) – Wall of Many Colours (Insane CC) Cipher Level 1 – Antipathetic Field (Insane damage for early game, withdraw a guy at a choke point then do this over them) – Whisper of Treason (useful from start to finish, fast cast single target long duration charm, messes up dragons) Level 2 – Mental Binding (Great AoE CC, cheap with good duration) – Phantom Foes (Use in combination with vs flanked resting bonus for certain classes, increases spell damage too) – Recall Agony (Good damage vs single targets) Level 3 – Ectopsychic Echo (Party friendly version of antipathetic field, cast on your own dudes) – Puppet Master (Dominate version of whisper of treason, insanely good, messes up dragons) Level 4 – Going Between (Nice defensive boost) Level 5 – Borrowed Instinct (If no Priest) – Ringleader (Great AoE dominate/charm debuff) – Tactical Meld (Stacks with every other ACC Bonus, great for landing CC against high def targets) Level 6 – Amplified Wave (Insane spell, damage and prone in massive area) – Disintegration (Insane single target damage, doesn't destroy loot!) Level 7 – Time Parasite (Will massively increase focus generation, though use deleterious alacrity potion in big fights) Level 8 – Defensive Mindweb (Hands down best defensive spell in the entire game, trivialises the late game) – Reaping Knives (Infinite focus generation, Insane)
