List of bugs that everyone should know about (Game Breaking)

Question

Posted (edited)

Hello Developers,

As much as I love this game, I can not play the game in its current form. Which really saddens me.

The reason being there are a few game breaking bugs that we can not even reverse ourselves.

List of game breaking bugs you should be aware about and fixing ASAP next patch. As we can NOT play the game as intended!!

Nr 1 http://forums.obsidian.net/topic/73449-stat-bonus-modifiers-can-erroneously-be-applied-multiple-times-allowing-stats-to-grow-beyond-intended-values/

The mother of all game breaking bugs and the main reason so many people are complaining that the game is too easy on HARD difficulty.

Loading a Savegame in the same map where you picked up a companion, and the companion is wearing armor that boost <random stats>.

Each time you load a savegame, the stats increase! do it 100 times and your character is INVINCIBLE.

Nr 2 http://forums.obsidian.net/topic/72923-psa-game-breaking-bug-affecting-everyone-including-you-temporary-fix-for-party-members-only-currently/

Double clicking on a item (like armor, boots etc) and then it equipping on said character his perma stats disappear.

Nr 3: http://forums.obsidian.net/topic/72764-quick-saving-and-loading-times-increased-greatly-after-20-hours/

I personally didnt experience this yet, but this also hinders gameplay that much that it falls under the category game breaking.

The more you save, the longer it takes to load/save again, people reporting 20-30 hours into the game saves are taking aprox 30 sec to quicksave, and similar time to load.

Nr 4: http://forums.obsidian.net/topic/73289-so-many-bugs/

Summoning Bug, where after combat the summoned creatures do NOT despawn, leaving you permanently in combat. You can NOT control

your summoned creatures anymore and they go with you every map... Workaround is probably loading a previous save for now but I have not confirmed this.

Similar thing to Stronghold, there is also a bug at the stronghold that after an enemy wave and you kill it. They keep coming back EVERY time you visit. I tried finding the source but couldnt find it here,, the lovely search function on this forum seems missing.

nr 5: http://forums.obsidian.net/topic/72614-endless-paths-level-13-is-uncompletable-major-bug/

Endless Path level 13, spirits not giving password so you can not continue.

Nr 6 : http://forums.obsidian.net/topic/73704-bugged-stronghold-tax/ http://forums.obsidian.net/topic/73737-empty-treasury/

Strong Hold doesn't give tax, it only claims taxes  (lol). There are multiple topics about it, I just picked out these 2.

I remember reading a preview review type article where they were talking about how much of the game played, and were so surprised at how bug free it was. Forget where, but...really? I'm not even 20 hours in and I've shelved the game completely due to bugs.

Hmm not sure if other ppl noticed this.

Monk's Transcendent Suffering ability provides incorrect dmg bonus in combat.

Out of combat: the ability information on character screen is correct listing +12 accuracy bonus and +10.1 dmg bonus (+8 base x1.27 from 19 might) for transcendent Suffering lvl4.

Once you initiate combat: both ability information and active effects show only the basic bonus of +12 accuracy and +8 dmg

I tested this in actual combat to check if it was just a tooltip error and it is not. The added damage bonus of Transcendent Suffering is not affected by Might at all.

Somebody found a solution to stacking stats: http://www.reddit.com/r/projecteternity/comments/30x84n/unofficial_bugfix_easy_fix_for_attributesdefences/.compact

figment's CT file doesn't included endurance bonus, so I modified the CT file to include it.

https://www.dropbox.com/s/ns7kak0biwldvp9/PillarsOfEternity_1.0.2_figment_addendurance_v1.CT?dl=0

Very nice find and credits to the original poster. This however doesn't fix the issues as not ALL stats (like accuracy) is fixed to normal.

I might be nitpicking, but I want to game to be completely as its supposed to be.

Another thing I noticed are comments like these, which I think that even if you apply this fix, you play 5 more minutes and you have it again.

Also there is a bug where the players HP increases permanently at random intervals, probably related to loading previous saves but it happens at locations other then where you picked up companions too.

This happens with Reckless Assault on my Rogue. I have the talent that gives +5 Deflection when using Reckless Assault. Now every time after i load the game and click Reckless Assault it re-aplies that talent and gives the rogue +5 Deflection. :(

Example what he said.

If I go further, the 'Defender' bug on Eder is still there, so that will add over time too. Even if you avoid all the bugs its more a very tedious job rather then actually focusing on the game and enjoying it.

I hope it helps some people, but I will wait for the bugs to be fixed, and I hope they will do so in 1.0.3

It's ok if you wait for patch. I suggest this for people who really want to continue playing and don't mind occasional clean up faulty stats until patch come.

Another well explained bug (involving the Horn item):

http://forums.obsidian.net/topic/72492-bug-cipher-focus-gain-permanently-disabled-by-drinking-horn-of-moderation/

Cipher focus gain permanently disabled by Drinking Horn of Moderation

Good read, definitely worth picking up if any dev is reading the post.

If you read more, it also explains why some other skills are acting up weird. it seems in the end all related.

I think the whole Saving system is bugged as hell and should be completely revamped.

All I know is that after reading many bugs, alot of them stem down to either loading previous saves. Or related to

perma increase stats by equipping/de-equipping -certain- items. Excluding the 'double-click on items' bug which is an issue on its own as well.

Another thing I would share extra attention to are all the  Raedric Keep issues that people are reporting:

http://forums.obsidian.net/topic/74116-raedric-keep-issue-also-occuring-later-in-the-game/

More Kana Caed Rua bugs keep piling up, one other example and well documented bug can be found here:

http://forums.obsidian.net/topic/74107-bug-kana-rua-roster-change-bug/

Also special attention to the many bugs regarding the Player Keep, like black screens when you want to sleep in the brighthollow inn in combination with dropping kane from party etc. And, more reported strange bugs in regard to the player keep.

This issue is even showing up on gaming sites now - and next to no mention of it by obsidian or mention of when a patch will drop.  The only place I've seen confirmation of any of the more brutal issues is in this thread.  Pretty sad communication and execution IMO.

Also share that opinion, they however do seem to communicate but I find it strange I have to read on pcgamer.com that they are currently working on patch 1.0.3 and that they are working on releasing it in the week of march 30, while there is no mention of this on their official site or forum.

Would have loved some CM to make a buglist together with the community and keep well written/documented bug reports coming and share a bit more information what they are and aren't able to fix in time for v1.0.3

They have been communicating alot better in the past, but since release its been different.

Info about 1.03 actually is on this forum: http://forums.obsidian.net/topic/71830-pillars-of-eternity-support-faq/

And a lot of confirm fixes were posted by dev on reddit including retroactive fix for Double Click and Raedric Keep bug: http://www.reddit.com/r/projecteternity/comments/30iccp/hi_all_pillars_dev_here_for_technial_support_and/.compact

Thanks for the list i guess

The RPS article did mention they are working on it and want to make it retroactive to fix broken games, its impossible from the outside to say how much work and time it takes, but of course i hope this will come out soon. I will probably still buy the game tomorrow even if it means i have to wait for a patch to really get into it ;)

Yes, your right regarding it being on the forum, I did read about it but kind of forgot. But I was more looking for the second link you posted on the official forums.

Confirm fixes, I thank you for the link I guess I will start reading Reddit from now on too :)

I really hope they fix how enemies follow the player, it's just too abusable at the moment.

Also, I feel like there's a lot of tooltip issues. Having a weapon in the offhand actually shows the character having two attacks in the character sheet, in combat it works fine. I wonder what's the interaction with monks though, as they have natural unarmed attacks.

Personally I imagine that the very poor communication they are displaying is due to the fact they probably have had quite a lot of sleepless nights at Obsidian since the release. I get the feeling they have been taken a bit by surprise of how very, very buggy this release ended up being. I suspect the game needs more than just one quick patch release to become as stable as most of us would want the game to be. We'll just have to be patient.

I have actually gotten to level 8 without experiencing any of these bugs. I never loaded in guilded vale .. No combat in the actual town. Pallegina has a negative DR for me (without armour its at -2) and Kana seems to have double deflection (if I put on a large shield for him his deflection goes up by 32 but a ring of deflection is only by 5) but I just wear the penalty pallegina has and I don't use Kana. I never did the double click bug (you can fix it for your companions by firing and rehiring).

So the bugs are kind of bad for some people, but they dont actually stop you playing the game if you are keen enough.

I think this is highly likely to be the cause.

In my experience, the weeks following up to release of software products (games included) tend to involve a lot of programmer and tester overtime. Take the crunch time before going gold, add the work they spent releasing 2(?) patches between PioE going Gold and release, throw in the overtime incurred this weekend and wrap all of that in stress incurred knowing that you have unfixed bugs causing players to throw away 10+ hours of gametime - this sounds like a recipe for some extreme programmer burnout.

Yup,

I would agree Concordance. I don't think he number of bugs were anticipated at all. Tired programmers and testers don't operate efficiently. Perhaps we can start a goFundMe campaign to provide Coffee (Or legal stimulating beverage of choice) and scones to the Obsidian team to fuel their coding/testing madness :) With the expectation of a quicker patch ;) (I'm taking a wild stab that appreciated programmers/testers might be more inclined to pour their hearts into this)

It also, understandably/sadly stands to reason that Obsidian is putting PR energy into keeping the gaming sites updated (Wider audience). That team is probably not the team that keeps these boards updated, hence the disconnect. It would be nice nod for someone in Obsidian to pin a quick post that says something to the tune of "Hey, we hear you guys and we are working on a patch!" I'm am seeing a lot of developer activity posting to the various problems, but those get lost in the shuffle. So, I can see Obsidian IS listening and communicating, but it is hard to see. Black Isle learned that the hard way with the release of BG. Same thing here. Get a message board PR person and quick! Who's job is to calm the crowds gathering with pitchforks and torches. Like the grainery and the angry dwarf, they just want to be acknowledged.

EDIT- Ok, I saw that Obsidian did post that they were working on a patch, but the post is not that clear. It didn't jump out at me. Perhaps a new pinned post under the heading of "Patch Status" and not "FAQ" (I do concede that that is an appropriate place for it, but it doesn't have the visibility IMO)

Here is the post, look very carefully near the middle: http://forums.obsidian.net/topic/71830-pillars-of-eternity-support-faq/

I disagree about pinning the topic, because most of these bugs are not game breaking. "Game breaking" means "makes it impossible to play the game". Making characters stronger, wiping a few active abilities, or making it impossible to complete some optional content is not game breaking.

We'll get a patch later this week that will likely balance some of these issues, but it's completely possible to play the game start to finish without a hotfix.

Well, Durance is around plus 4600% DMG. I killed Adra Dragon with 1 hit! For me this is a game breaking. I stopped to play and will wait a patch to fix the annoying stats and the summons!

To me it sounds like the opposite - it's making it easier for you to play the game, not harder.

Potion of Minor Endurance

For me, this potion is not working properly. It says, that it recharges +59 Endurance after being used in combat, but nothing happens when I use it.

Also as priest, the spell "Holy Radiance" does not provide Endurance. You gain Health instead, don't know if that was intended by the devs.

well it is not they way it is meant to be played i think...that is also what game breaking implies...ie breaking the mechanics of the game. I for one am w8 with anticipation for the next patch...i want a hard challenge that i can beat with in game mechanics not by abusing this or that bug.

And i think most people like to play that way, or at least in a fair way.

Here`s hoping the patch hits soon :cat:

You're sure that you've understood how health and endurance work in this game?

I'm pretty sure holy radiance doesn't recover your health. At least not in my game.

Are there any abilities/spells that heal health at all? Seems everything just refreshes endurance and only potions and rest restore health.

Typos? Aliens. Errors? Aliens!

Since you want to be a literalist, then let change game breaking to serious bugs that will make most customers stop playing and if left uncheck, will be the end of Obsidian's business. Ok, not game breaking.

Pretty off-topic (sorry), but yes there are two talents I believe they are. They are under the utility tab when you level up and get a talent at the very bottom, I think it's Triage and Wound Binding or something similar, one heals the character that has the talent only and the other one can heal allies but heals for less health. They are only usable once per rest though so imo not very usefull...
