we would like for our carpenters and plumbers to recognize how much o' what is happening today is reminiscent o' the early decades o' 20th century USA, with increasing violent rhetoric supporting nativism and a widening gap in income disparity leading to widespread anger. ignorance at the time made americans easily manipulated by the worst political elements. democracy don't work particular well w/o an educated electorate. Gromnir worked ranch jobs and roofing for much o' our youth and university years. we learned useful skills, but more important we recognized how the folks working backbreaking jobs for little pay ain't stoopid and it were circumstances more than intellect which led our coworkers fixing barb wire fences in blizzard conditions instead o' being seated in lecture hall classrooms being taught how commodity based economies o' africa and elsewhere where doomed by systemic forces to be almost perpetual excluded from the ranks o' capital producers and service-based economies. am thinking it would be useful education for university folks to actual spend months/years doing physical demanding work if for no other reason than to disabuse 'em o' the notion education is somehow making a person insightful or special. just our opinion. I just finished another ultimate run, I wanted to see if it was possible to get the amaliorra scepter & engoliero estoc & use the upgraded watcher ship to reach Ukaizo instead of the ghost ship, it is, I even spared 5 days, sasha scimitar + grave calling + engoliero + skeletons is real fun ( oh also effort is fun with mind blades especially)3 points

It's interesting because some of the classes I'm most grateful for having taken were arts electives in my otherwise STEM heavy education haha. It's invaluable to understand psychology when interfacing with dozens of different people and the different ways they prefer to work, learn, and interact. Even taking stuff like Sociology and understanding Social Desirability Bias and Learned Helplessness helps me understand post mortem survey feedback whether through private/public betas with end users (the smaller and more private, the more likely social desirability has an impact) or coworkers that feel like their current situation is "just the way it is" and they need to just deal with it. But I also have reservations about "University should be about getting a job." IMO that's more the purview of trade schools. Even with programming, if your interest is about getting a job in programming then a technical school will likely have a shorter/cheaper program and you'll very likely come out of it a more technically capable programmer than a lot of CS programs.2 points

Funnily enough I just attended my daughter's back to school night, and the most impressive classroom by far was her Woodshop 2 class. It is an entire building/garage, and they have multiple work areas, including a full scale house frame for students to learn on. Unfortunately not every school has such a great set up. But in regards to your flawed premise, the answer is both are important. It isn't an either/or proposition. We can have carpenters that understand social studies and social studies people that know how to work with wood. As Amentep pointed out, Social Science or Social Studies covers a broad range of subjects. At the end of the day though, it is more about Bloom's taxonomy than having some obscure knowledge about a specific part of history. We want critical thinkers in our society.2 points

More about economics of war. Russia has launched approximately 7.5 billion USD worth of missiles since the beginning of the war. The used up almost all of the Iskander missiles, and are probably slowly running out of Kalibr (they still have pretty big stockpile). That is the main reason, why they are using modified S300 rockets more and more often. They are launching them already in three occupied Oblasts. (Kherson, Zaporhizhia, Kharkiv)2 points

University education should be free, because students learn best when they focus solely in studying instead trying to joggle work and studying. Living for students is already expensive even without needing to pay for education. Educated people are benefit for whole nation. Universities should pick their students by their academic merit and nothing else. People who have been good students in elementary and high school, have ability complete university. If students don't have real interest and discipline they don't really spend any resources as they don't participate in the education. Universities should follow progress of their students and have counselors to help students to over come their difficulties. To be fair: I personally benefited of Finland's free education from preschool to university education and study grant from government for living expense. as I come from working class family with 4 kids where only one of the parents had job, so we didn't have much money to spent, but me and all my siblings were still able to get university education and high paying white collar job.2 points

With a lot of schools in the US (if not most or all) won't allow you to get financial assistance if you're not meeting progression goals of some kind. Most loan offerers here aren't going to continue loaning money to someone who with each failed class is less likely to graduate, thus less likely to get a job that would allow them to pay the loan back. Pretty much any assistance that doesn't go to everyone could be deemed by someone to be unfair. Its a specious argument.2 points

if we had to choose top three most useful wotr companions we would select camellia along with seelah and sosiel, and camellia makes the best pure tank, though as already stated by mid-late game a true tank becomes increasing less necessary. crazycakes eventual gets access to creeping doom, one o' the best spells for overcoming a few o' those improbable boss battles, and she potential may take a second spirit to acquire the metal curse, which provides a scaling no-save debuff to enemy ac... -6 at level 16? serious? even so, we invariably stop using camellia in our party after act i and some limited act ii content. am s'posing one could argue camellia has over-the-top appeal, but is nothing particular subtle or clever in the writing o' her character. "would the owlcat writers go that far?" yes. yes they would, and so what? yeah, am able to see the edgelord appeal o' camellia but we don't share it. but again, camellia has the potential to be the best companion tank, as well as your most useful hexer and she has access to creeping doom. camellia is a spirit hunter, an excellent class with full spell progression capable of casting many o' the best party-wide buffs available. camellia is useful early, mid and late in the game. is many practical reasons to keep camellia around. @majestic mentioned how much he enjoyed firebirds in a different thread. we would rather watch firebirds on an endless loop than keep camellia in a wotr party a moment longer than necessary. I hope that was a joke? Send wave after wave after wave of young men through no-mans land, mowing those down who didn't get taken out by barbed wire and artillery fire, with machine guns in entrenched positions. The only thing Ypres, Somme and Verdun accomplished, tactically and strategically was... nothing. Sure, it killed and maimed hundreds of thousands, but that just made it a war of attrition. Which side would first run out of a generation to sacrifice in battles like that. So, take my 500.000 man, tell them to take objective. Enemy player takes his 500.000 man and digs in on objective. After both sides have lost 250.000 man each and six months have passed, lets call it a draw. WWI in a nutshell. No, I don't really find the land battles particularly interesting, because nothing was shown when it comes to things like strategic brilliance or tactical nous. Even the introduction of radical new forms of warfare, like airplanes, chemical warfare and tanks had little to no effect, because the generals were trying to outdo each other in cluelessness on how to break the stalemate. it's as bad as the old "battle line" doctrine for naval warfare, where captains and admirals were prohibited on the pain of being court marshalled from showing any initiative and breaking with conventions and existing doctrines. The latter lasted until Nelson decided to break all the rules and got away with it, because a) he won and b) he died before he made any slip ups. The same can not be said for land warfare until Guderian decided that WWI sucked and all out tank warfare with airplane support was a better idea than killing off another generation in the trenches. I know, he didn't invent it, but he made "Blitzkrieg" famous.2 points

So, this is the scene I meant: Dunno, somehow that just cracked me up. Happens after Mireille asks her if she has brought any swim wear at all. Though, really, who brings a bikini to a hit job? In an ideal world, the two will eventually rub off on each other. Mireille could do with a bit more serious, and Kirika with a little less serious, after all. I have no idea where the story is going, it might turn out to be Alias or Dan Brown level pants after an interesting beginning. I also just watched the fifth episode, and it has an actiony scene near a cathedral that reminded me a whole lot of a certain Cowboy Bebop episode. Cowboy Bebop had better art and animation though, but the style wasn't dissimilar. There's something morbid but 'fun' to see Mireille and Kirika bond over the whirlwind of death they bring (or that follows) wherever they go, particularily in episode five. So far, so fine. It's not The Vision of Escaflowne level entertaining, but it sure is better than Strike Witches. Just hope this doesn't Dan Brown out eventually. I kind of expect it to, truth be told. Eh, also, Amazon's video streams keep being bad, particularily the blacks.1 point

I have some thoughts on what might have happened... lol It's frustrating because the same people (our... politicians...) that will justify increasing wages for our politicians to ensure we get quality people and for some reason that definitely does NOT apply to our educators.... We're having similar issues here in Alberta (and Canada wide I think).1 point

That's not unreasonable. I'm a lefty but recognizing "is this a good use for government funding" is always a valid question. My biggest concern is that if you make it self funded, it will become privileged. And once that happens, I wouldn't be surprised that University degrees even in "useless" sciences become increasingly valuable (it will empower employers - often richer in our society - to more effectively gatekeep). There's also some differences in getting into a field more as an interest/hobby (I read a lot more history now, and definitely learn from it), which is definitely valuable, compared to having an organized academic discipline that is in some way organized and able to petition for grants and funding moreso than Allan With a Passing Hobby in History would be able to do. And even then those grants are still pretty political. My Microbiologist friend talked about how it was a lot easier to secure funding if your proposal included cancer or HIV over napthenic acids of tailing ponds. The latter though is very important to understanding the environmental impact Alberta's oil sands developments have. Mine was a sociology of health and wellness course. I was so engaged that professor actually asked me if I would be open to a graduate degree even though I was in a Science-Specialization program. It was very fascinating and some of the truisms I had that got challenged (especially with our culture's focus on weight) was just, well, very interesting.1 point

Social Studies is probably a more generally useful subject (it teaches you about history and politics, for example) than carpentry. I'm a computer programmer and I benefit from social studies. Carpentry would not be a useful skill for me for hopefully obvious reasons; it is of course a useful for skill for society as well.1 point

your point is irrelevant to our discussion. I also purposefully omitted discussion about what is 'education' as a whole but focused more on school system. You are asking carpenters to pay schools for social studies workers via their taxes. I am big supporter of state funded schools. I just think those money should be spend wisely. If per say in your state is big demand for doctors, you should support doctor studies. No-one is stopping someone to get educated in whatever they want, its just should not be on expanse of someone else. So If your dream is to be gender studies expert - be my guest and study as much as you want. Just don't ask me to pay it for you so it is either/or - you either spend tax money on educating someone useful skill marked demands or you spend it on someones whim. I think biggest offenders to this are people who than spend their life working for state. In that case someone from private sector basically pay for life to someone else. My father is bookbinder/printing machine operator and he only spend 3 years in school (after of course 9 years in basic school) yet he is very bookish and educated person. He just didn't needed state to pay for his 'education'1 point

I had (still have, left them in Chapter 3 until GOTY edition) a party with wildland shaman PC and Ember with Cam leaning into hexes. The debuff pile-up was very handy in early to early-mid levels. Also from RP angle a party that constantly curses and chants has to be a delight. "Piss off, you wanker!" "Jai guru deva..." "U fokin wot mate?!?!" "Ommmmmmm..."1 point

It seems like a really unnecessary change when simply rebalancing existing recipes or better utilization of existing and underutilized crafting items could have solved the relatively minor problem. And the limiting factor wasn't even the quartzite, as you could farm that really easily, but hunting scarabs. Which they also fixed this patch by reducing their health and vision. So overall an over thought fix to an issue that likely would have already been resolved with a related fix being implemented.1 point

Probably not a helpful comment, but from a European perspective the whole issue is indicative of a system so effed up it's not even true. And certainly not funny. To think of the human resources wasted in a system like this is, shall we say, sobering. (The same goes for the lack of universal health care, but there the waste concerns both human resources and anything connected with health, of course.)1 point

hmmm we found seelah, spec'd sword and board, perfect capable o' tanking most encounters up to hard difficulty. however, for a few boss fights, the paladin were not a viable tank... and the boss fights are kinda the chokepoint for those who might not wanna min-max. seelah, particularly if you made her a mounted combatant (we used wolf most often, but for full tanky seelah, boar is a decent choice... though admitted to do non-horse you gotta multi with oracle or something else,) is gonna be an excellent tank for +90% o' all wotr encounters on difficulties short o' unfair, but is not as if you are able to ignore boss battles which effective undermine her tank worthyness. so the question is why would you build seelah as a tank in the first place? crazycakes camellia is arguable the most effective pure tank 'mongst the companions as is typical better to use a dex build for ac than to try and stack armour bonuses. y'know, the main reason we keep seelah sword and board in all our wotr runs is 'cause there is a holy avenger in the game and 'cause somebody in our party is gonna be equipping the undying love of the hopebringer. more freaking metagamey nonsense, eh? the shield is too useful for most o' our dc and fear-exploitation parties not to have the shield figure into our strategies, so somebody needs equip it and seelah is an obvious candidate. in our estimation, your best wotr tank is a summons or an animal companion. sure, you may build an angel oracle to be nigh invulnerable, but why bother? build a party to max dc and damage output is typical our strategy 'cause an overwhelming offense in wotr is the best defense-- you don't need stellar ac if you kill everything in one or two rounds... which is admitted cheesy. ... pathfinder is subject to munchkiny exploits, and owlcat took a hands-off approach to pathfinder balance... and then they added their own epic silliness which frequent complete breaks the game. this is a problem for casual gamers 'cause to make wotr challenging enough for a game with reload as well as hardcore fans who will make insane powerful trickster, demon and angle builds, owlcat resorted to bloat. well that is fine for the hardcore players who will grumble 'bout bloat as they roll-stomp through the game on any difficulty short o' unfair, but what about the casual player? wotr is designed so hardcore munchkins may nevertheless enjoy the game experience, but such design necessarily is gonna frustrate the casual and sane player who doesn't know every unique wotr exploit and stacking opportunity. nevertheless, if @Gorthis having any difficulties with battles on normal difficulty, we will offer advice, but he should be reassured to hear playing every companion straight vanilla as offered is viable. it is 'course all too ez to choose wrong feats and multi-class options so as to make your party ineffectual. is also disturbing ez to build a party which is highly effective for the first 2/3 o' the game but useless near the end. regardless, is not too difficult to fix any "wrong" choices, so don't hesitate to express frustration and ask for solutions. It's not really only about mechanics, these are relatively similar to any d20 game. Base Attack Bonus, Armor Class, etc., but the specific implementation and knowledge of items and how specific mechanics interact in this particular implenentation of the Pathfinder ruleset. To give you a primer, we were talking about just one of these things a page back. Armor Class scaling can't be done with armor at all*, so any characters who are supposed to tank whose defenses rely solely on armor class gained from armor are going to get into a bit of a bind later on. In order to get the armor class necessary to comfortable stand in melee range of enemies and not get beaten into a bloody pulp, you'd need to take an Oracle level with Nature's Whispers, which lets you you take your CHA bonus to armor class (as a bonus, you can now dump DEX to 7) and take one level of Scaled Fist monk. These two stack, because the Monk AC bonus stacks on top of the DEX bonus, which is now caused by CHA. Therefore, starting this character with a CHA of 21 means at the second level the character already has a +10 bonus to AC. Endgame we're looking at 26 base CHA with a +6 CHA item, i.e. 32 CHA. 10 + 11 x 2 = 32 AC before buffs. Good luck finding any armor in the game that comes with stats like that, especially once you figure out that Mage Armor stacks on top of that (+4 AC) and taking a potion of Mage Armor proccs Archmage Armour (adds another +10 AC at Mythic 10, although that is quite late in the game - but you still get to +7 AC from Mage Armor + Archmage Armour relatively quickly!), so we're sitting at 46 AC. 46 AC might sound like it is a lot, but how well do you think that stacks up against enemies having 50+ AB and 8 attacks per round, and we're not even talking about Unfair difficulty yet which just adds even more on top of the insanity... to get through that you need to actively use exploits, like the little fun fact that Mounted Shield only gets checked when mounting your, uhm, mount. So switch to that fat tower shield, climb on top of your horse and switch back to that two handed lance for the extra charge oomph while still having the AC from Mounted Shield... *Technically not true, but the numbers coming out are so low it is near enough to can't be done at all at anything at or above normal.1 point
