  1. The Polish government apparently doesn't like media they can't control https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-58180761 Poland's parliament has passed a new media bill that opponents say is an attempt to silence a TV channel critical of the government. The government says the law is needed to stop hostile foreign powers taking control of its broadcasters. The "hostile foreign power" may get upset though. But critics say it is an attempt to push US company Discovery to sell the country's biggest TV network, TVN. The law threatens to sour relations with the US, a key ally, and deepen EU concern over media freedom in Poland. Maybe somebody should show the Polish leadership a history book. The US has a proven track record of throwing allies to the wolves the moment the relationship isn't beneficial enough. I'm sure Putin would love a Poland all alone in the world.

  4. It is. Rippa na musuko, actually, rippa meaning "fine" and musuko is "son" and na is just one of these Japanese particles that are not easy to explain but you'll eventually get the hang of. So yes, the internet is kind of right there. Assuming the basis of your translation is correct, which I really don't know.

  5. That's the crazy thing, it ain't just him, there have been multiple...characters throughout the past 15 or so years (since I started using this name) whom I've despised that have inexplicably used it. Worse, other people read them using it, and then think "oh, I guess that's the correct form of shortening it, guess I'll use it too!" and I have to correct them because, no, I don't hate you, so you shouldn't use this, please use the correct one. Have to nip it in the bud before it gets out of control when I see it. (e): In a way, it's actually almost kind of like a test: if you use it and I don't try to correct you, it almost definitely means I hate you, or at the very least have no desire to interact with you to tell you to fix it. I wouldn't let someone I don't already dislike continue to use it without at least letting them know...especially with repeat uses.

  6. I was ninja'd. How was I supposed to know Sue took a rogue dip? I was trying to riff on the scene that got this thread titled. Oh well. Honestly as bad as what this guy would hypothetically bring in would be, more likely he would be a Naruto fan who'd chastise us for not paying enough money to watch/read anime/manga.

  8. You say that like its a bad thing. I still remember how Harmony Gold, because of the success of Robotech, took the 70s Queen Millennia and Space Pirate Captain Harlock animes and merged them into a single show called Captain Harlock and the Queen of a Thousand Years to meet syndication requirements for number of episodes. That said, I love Leiji Matsumoto's stuff, and I wish more of it was translated here. (cue someone telling me about official manga releases that I missed over the years). Theme song with lyrics allegedly by Stan Lee himself. ♫ Defenders of the Earth (De-fennn-dersssss!) ♬ I think that US production companies or the network/syndication heads tended to think of teenagers as less accepting of complex storytelling in cartoons than happened in Japan, which for many years made action series somewhat dumbed down versions of live action TV shows (which also, for many years, were done-in-one-episode types of storytelling).

  9. I only know the theme song. It's not something I watched, however, I don't mind entertainment aimed at teenagers in general. I really love(d) Cardcaptor Sakura, and that was arguably made for late pre- to early teenagers. Just not for either Japanese or American boys. Heh. I really have no idea how Princess Tutu will end. It might really just lose any semblance of sanity by the end and "Out-Utena" everything, but at least it doesn't leave viewers all alone with what's happening. It helps that Ahiru is a duck who constantly wonders about what's going on. Utena of course couldn't do that all the time, she was as much a part of and trapped in the world as everyone else. Have fun with the Utena flashbacks, by the way. The opening narration begins with almost the exact same words. I mean, sure, there's only so many variations of "Once upon a time there was a prince" you could write, even in Japanese, but my first reaction was: "Oh no, is this going to be like Utena?" Eh, don't worry. When will you begin? Critical research failure, actually. I thought it was 74 episodes, turns out that's the number of manga volumes. Erm... yeah, so, maybe when I'm retired, right? Queen Millennia and Galaxy Express 999 are from the same mangaka, and they're set at different time periods in the same setting. Kind of. Plus an arc welding OVA. In other words, yes, very much intentional. Captain Future is something that I'm a little afraid of rewatching, I have a feeling that won't hold up so well, and Captain Tsubasa, well, uhm, if you want to watch any sports anime, then I'd really suggest going with Attack No. 1. You get ridiculous sports arcs in both, but Attack No. 1, while kind of brutal in its own way, at least has some very good character interactions. From what I can remember, I'm at like episode 19 in my rewatch now, and have been there for weeks. We're not. I'm just not committing to 366 episodes of something that's then mostly filler that I have been told is of sub-par quality. That's no judgement on the series, really.

  10. I'm currently re-watching DEFENDERS OF THE EARTH which is similarly a US show animated in Japan (and later Korea). In this case the writers and character designers/storyboarders from Marvel Productions animation (previously DePatie-Freleng, who did the Pink Panther titles and theatrical shorts) and Toei (later Daewon and Sei Young). Like a lot of US television animation, its aimed for, at best, a teen audience and the writing shows. I've enjoyed it for what it is, not expecting it to be a particularly nuanced show as it was a few years too early to benefit from the BATMAN: THE ANIMATED SERIES breakthrough in television adventure cartoons*. I think that's one of the big differences from this kind of show and, say, Tom & Jerry which was pulling from a theatrical model that appealed to families (ie it was multilayered with gags for adults and kids) even after they moved to television (at least for awhile). *Yes, it does come post Robotech, but Robotech severely altered the source material to make it suitable for a teen audience and ultimately didn't lead to the breakthrough that many thought it would of more serious TV animation. And anyway, the model for DOTE seems to be GI Joe: A Real American Hero.

I finally had to/was able to build a 2nd Forester (on the left). I'm half tempted to start another of the maps for variety too. Photo mode!

  13. Yeah, that was you, me, InsaneCommander, and KP. Am I forgetting someone? If so, yikes! Yeah, it's very weird how...different stuff can inherently speak to us. What's especially weird in my case is I was actually exposed to a number of different animes during some very formative years like Naruto, One Piece, Bleach, Inuyasha*...stuff of that nature from the late 90s/early 2000s. Instead of taking a liking or even just a tolerance to it, I had the exact opposite reaction: an absolute burning hatred that closed me off from it entirely. If instead I had been born ten years earlier...and especially twenty years earlier, it could've been a completely different story. Well, if I had been, instead of trying to broaden my horizons and find oddball things that I like such as Miyu right now, I guess I'd have already seen all of it already and instead be totally "Old Man Yells at Clouds"-ing it up and constantly complaining about them not making it how they used to, . So I guess, in a sense, it's good to be young, . (P.S. Cartoons with that kind of Bojack Horseman-style, and there are a few of them that have it or something very similar to it, are still literally disgusting to look at to me. In comparison, something like Invincible is generally displeasing to look at, but not actually DISGUSTING.) *Funnily, when I look at that early 2000s Inuyasha now, I can almost...kind of tolerate it, particularly in comparison to the other three I listed. Makes a kind of sense - it seems to be a little bit of a throwback to the late 80s kind of style. So my horizons have been broadened somewhat indeed, .

  14. I find it really interesting how mirrored that is for me, because I grew up absolutely hating most Western animation* - even before it turned into what it is today, which is even more loathesome. Most of that came from a time before I even knew where these animated shows on TV came from, but I always tuned in for Bismarck, Captain Future or Queen Millennia, along with the other ones I've mentioned, like Heidi or Dog of Flanders or Anne of Green Gables (later Sailor Moon, obviously). While inversely, the cartoons that were really popular with the other kids at school, like Beetlejuice? Yeah, thanks, but no thanks. Keep that crap. There were some exceptions, like Ghost Busters, but even there only the original first series, not any of the horrenduous follow ups. I also liked Galaxy Rangers, but that one cheated, because it was animated by Tokyo Movie Shinsha, just written by Americans (and that actually shows, when I tried rewatching it as an adult... that's something that did not age well at all). There still is that massive bias even today, and I doubt I'll ever shake it. It takes active badgering to check something out, or recommendations from trustworthy sources, and even then... yeah. Even then I'm sitting here, watching BoJack Horseman and thinking: Hey guys, maybe spend a little less on A-lister voice talent and a wee bit more on your animation and art team, please? Give this some artistry, maybe? Or just do both, like Castlevania. Then you read critical receptions that gush over how great the lighting effects were in BoJack's underwater episode, and I realize: Nah, that's never going to happen. *Exceptions for old animation, like the original Tom & Jerry, and the occassional older Disney movie. Talking purely about aesthetics here, of course. Let's not get into discussions about the often times questionable content and horrible working conditions of the animators. Actually, at the time, that was all of us here, not counting people who come here to post every now and then, like HoonDing, Oner, Malc and Lexx. Made for a fun experience.

  16. You will now! The art doesn't look that bad to me, but I did read superhero comics then some Avatar Press comics so I guess maybe I just have bad taste or high tolerance. I mean if you can stick with Jacen Burrows illustrating a script featuring a fishman raping a woman in order to impregnate her with Cthullu, then you can deal with most things. Thanks Alan Moore. The storyline is interesting, I mean in terms of lore elves in the RPG games people itt have played are basically OP immortals so a series dealing with that concept seriously sounds cool.

  17. Hey guys @Not So Clever Hound @Boeroer @Elric Galad finally got to Sacred Immolation on this Crusader. It is better than I thought to be honest, it turns the tank into a capable AOE damage dealer, with 14 base INT Bronlar's smart buff bringing you to 19 INT and THEN firing off Tactical Barrage you have a much longer Barrage and gain one PL for SI combined with the Magran axe that gives you 2 fire PLs. SI starts hitting really hard and has good PEN (took Scion of Flame as well). Also as a Crusader you can just shrug off the SI damage pretty easily even if you have good Might like I do. Rapid Recovery, Exalted Endurance (I have a priest with Devotions of the Faithful for increased ACC), Tough and Lay on Hands. Most of the time LoH is not necessary as I am using void ward and I have good resolve (I basically took the resolve for the increased returns in deflection but the reduction in afflictions helps). The reduction is even less with Khapa Tea but I am eating Hot Razor skewers instead for more PL increase because the Crusader is so beefy (is there a cap on PL increase?). I am using SI even on boss fights (POTD of course) the damage is not dangerous to a Crusader at all, especially one with a large shield and Refreshing defense, Grazes and hits keep Refreshing Defense up and incoming damage is low. So the self damage never really helps the enemy. I am able to reliably hit with SI because I have maxed PER, Fighter Tactical Barrage and Devotions of the Faithful guarantees hits. If solo a large shield will be tougher to use or you would have to use Zealous Focus and heal yourself another way. No zeal issues at all with this build imo on a tank using a shield, FoD is pretty MEH unless you are using shared flames and the majority of the party is ranged, with Shared flames AOE being so small imo it was not worth. I feel like most crusader builds the majority of the zeal is eaten by spamming FoD (maybe i am wrong). With this build the vast majority of your zeal goes to LoH and SI, and Sworn Rival (Goldpact Knight) but I always get the zeal for Sworn Rival refunded when the target goes down. ONE HUGE CON to SI as a Crusader: You have to wait to level 19. All in all you definitely do not have to take SI on a crusader and I think maybe its not worth on a 2handed or DW melee damage dealer crusader as a lot of your zeal is spent on spamming FoD (maybe its worth to have for AOE situations? I dont know) but on a party tank who is only using zeal for LoH and Sworn Rival? I think its good if you Max PER for large shield users, medium shield can get away with less PER and buckler users i dont think need PER with disciplined barrage (party play) (possible good synergy with the Outworn Buckler here).

  19. I finished up a run where i made more of a conscious effort to use traps, and I discovered something dispiriting. At some point, the hazard durations on traps got broken (I wonder if it's related to Sparkcrackers no longer having a duration). This doesn't impact many traps (e.g. Chain Lightning still disorients for potentially huge amounts of time), but does impact Caltrops and Burning Ground, which are relatively common. It used to be the case that I could kite enemies around on caltrops traps for quite a while, and the very long visible duration of the burning ground actually corresponded to the actual effects. However, now both of them last for a fraction of a second, pretty much only when they go off - Caltrops ticks for one or two times before having no effect, and Burning Ground basically only ticks once. They basically become useless (not that traps are typically game-changing). It *seems* like this might be easily tweaked with a mod. So this is a request for someone to do that. (If Sparkcrackers are impacted by the same phenomenon, then pls fix that too).

  20. You know that Spiritshift is a modal that you can deactivate when you want, right ? So you can activate, use Flurry, deactive (a few seconds later, one cannot activate/deactivate a modal instantly) and you'll have flurry in human form. That's why I usually say that Shifter has literraly no real drawback.

  22. I really do. I took one look at that manga and thought to myself... ...But then I read the premise and was like "ok, actually, at least this sounds like a neat premise...but boy do I hate high fantasy anime stuff, and doggone me if this ain't the ugliest manga I ever seen". Not that I've seen many mangas, but still. Roger that, keep me updated, it looks and sounds kind of interesting, but so did Utena. I'm now 30 episodes (out of 51) into Eriko. At this point, it'd be difficult not to recommend that to specifically you as well, especially given your background of having watched shows like Heidi and this really kind of feeling like a moderately more adult, interesting, and dynamic take on something from that era. I feel fairly certainly you'd at least like it. But maybe something to check out sometime in the future when your plate isn't nearly so full, . Even worse news yet: I've been strong-armed into watching Gainax's Nadia: The Secret of Blue Water next, probably starting next week. Pray for me. Maybe not, more on this later...

  24. Not that I really needed any confirmation, that "anti vaxxers" suffers from one or more intellectual deficiencies... if it wasn't so sad and threatened the lives of other people I would laugh at them. https://www.bbc.com/news/entertainment-arts-58164833 Last week, the New York Times reported that the owner of an eyewear store in the Bronx, New York, was struggling to persuade some of its staff to get a Covid vaccine, with one citing the plot of I Am Legend as a concern. "One employee said she was concerned because she thought a vaccine had caused the characters in the film I Am Legend to turn into zombies," the report said. Responding to the article, Akiva Goldsman, 59, who co-wrote the screenplay based on a 1954 novel of the same name, tweeted: "Oh. My. God. It's a movie. I made that up. It's. Not. Real."

  28. Fleet Feet + Cat Flurry prolonged by WoD is significantly better than DAoM. You can use Fleet Feet + Cat Flurry in zero-recovery armor to fast cast all the other more broken things that can be prolonged with WoD, it's not like they're mutually exclusive .

  29. Ghost heart/ascendant with Frostseeker is a very fun/versatile ranged build with solid ranged damage and casting abilities. However if you want to play just a caster then the potential of Frostseeker is a bit wasted...

  30. That's true overall but Cat Flurry is also VERY good if you're willing to prolong with WoD. On a Sorcerer it's potentially better than Spiritshift Armor.

  31. The only invisibility effects that break on DoT nowadays are Shadowing Beyond from the Priest of Skaen (not the Rogue one) and Arkemyr's Brilliant Departure. Even the potion works with DoTs. I'm not 100% sure about Slippers of the Assassin but iirc that invisibility also doesn't break on DoT.

  32. yeah, I had a shifter+helwalker melee, and it was definitely VERY squishy, and after both bear and boar form expired, it was just a meatbag on the ground . and this was not solo, so I had Edér+either Pallegina or Konstanten stand next to me. but worth mentioning, that the only time I ran out of forms were on megabosses and insane long fights, like SSS or FS fights.

  34. decades past, we worked a few summers in high school for a maintenance crew which were employed by a housing development. all kinda different jobs. we were used mostly for roofing 'cause we had that weird indian height indifference. 'course we also got stuck doing painting o' houses, which included the prep work. prep house to paint requires strip old paint and to achieve such we used electric rotary sanders. wear a mask and we still ended up with black snot at the end o' the day 'cause the masks never fit perfect when you were doing improbable kinda stretching and reaching and you inevitable knocked the mask askew while on a ladder and with one arm holding the sander and one on the ladder or building, mask adjustments were impractical. worse, you had to take off the masks eventual and all that sh!te were still in the air. more peculiar for us were the behavior o' coworkers at the start o' summer when we did weed eating o' fire breaks. a tractor would knock down tall weeds, kicking up great plumes o' dirt and dust. amusing 'cause we always had to be aware o' the tractor starting fires. had a small dedicated water truck with us to put out fires the tractor started. along with the tractor, two guys would knock down areas o' dry weeds with industrial strength weed eaters. were always rocky or inaccessible areas the tractor would not reach. protective gear were goggles or sunglasses, earplugs (maybe), snake chaps (they went from ankle to knee and were cloth but with a copper mesh between the layers o' fabric), and particle masks. most o' our coworkers did not use the masks 'cause it made breathing more difficult, were hot and eventual the rubber straps gave you a headache. the guy running the tractor (he were in his early 40s but looked like he were in late 60s,) liked to smoke (we kid you not) while he operated the tractor meant to create firebreaks. we used the mask religious and still coughed up evil too frequent for us to be happy 'bout it. just being in proximity to the tractor meant taking off the mask to get water or fix a busted weed eater resulted in the swallowing o' dust and worse. 'cant imagine how bad it were for our coworkers. people is all nuts. HA! Good Fun!
