Doppelschwert
Looks like I'm the first monk player around. Opposed to all the people suggesting that this class can only be played as an asian martial artist, I'll give him a nice bastard sword and play him as a wandering wise-man. Who totally kicks your butt when you're being stupid. With a bastard sword. In his robes. Later on, propably cipher.

Who totally kicks your butt when you're being stupid. With a bastard sword. In his robes. I like the way you think. That's completely what I'm hoping for in the Monk. Speed/dodge as defense but not limited only to unarmed/martial arts combat skills. Actually, what I'd like is a class where I can be like Indigo Montoya. Fencing, speed, footwork. And utterly charming, of course. “Things are as they are. Doppelschwert
Yeah, that sounds like an interesting concept, too. I think the perceived problem is that most people are not keen on neglecting class abilities. Of course you were able to play a monk with weapons and armor in NWN2 for example, but most people propably wouldn't do it because you were crippling yourself. Which is kind of true, but I think the most fun characters I played where the ones were I just did what sounded fun even though it wasn't that powerful. One time I was playing a hermit who was simply called "the gardener", which specialised in dualwielding scythes. He was a ranger and had a dinosaur pet and I imagined him riding the dino around his field harvesting crops with his dual scythes. That was neither realistic nor was it strong gameplay wise, but boy what fun has been had with that character... gglorious
I don't know yet. I've usually had my class dictated to me somewhat by non-combat roles that needed to be filled. Having a game where this isn't a factor I can use is pretty new to me, so I'll have to see what I think will be the most mechanically interesting class, and they haven't given enough information yet. Possibly Cipher though.
eimatshya
Chanter is the class I'm most excited about, but I'll probably end up rolling a fighter for my first playthrough since it seems like I would want to know more about the gameworld before I play a lore master. I usually play as a fighter or equivalent in single player RPGs because I like being in the thick of the combat. As such, if I do play a chanter, I'll try to make him (or her) as tank-y as possible. marelooke
Wizard. I always start out as one (if they're an option). How long I'll stick with him depends on how well they're done though. In BG2 I didn't really play anything but a Wizard, in Skyrim I didn't last very long as pure caster on the other hand.
Karkarov
Uh I will play a Fighter because that is just how I do it on the initial character. Later playthroughs I will probably look at Paladin or maybe Cipher depending on how that class turns out. Actually, what I'd like is a class where I can be like Indigo Montoya. Fencing, speed, footwork. And utterly charming, of course. Pretty confident he would fall as a Fighter. He spent his entire life mastering one weapon and seemed to have dumped all his skill points into Intimidate. Kiya
Every RPG where I have the choice I start as a Wizard. I've always loved the magic side of things, as with marelook however, I didn't last long with it in Skyrim - playing a pure mage was just made too much of a PITA. Hormalakh
Nobody is choosing the barbarian. I wonder why? Only 52 people voted. Out of 70-something thousand who have backed the game. The numbers are too low to be a reliable predictor. Let's get like 500 people to vote then we'll maybe get a better idea. Maybe barbarian players don't know how to use the forum? 3 My blog is where I'm keeping a record of all of my suggestions and bug mentions. http://hormalakh.blogspot.com/ UPDATED 9/26/2014 My DXdiag: http://hormalakh.blogspot.com/2014/08/beta-begins-v257.html

teknoman2
let's see, the standard 5 companions included since the begining of the project are fighter, mage, monk, ranger, priest. so i will be a rogue to complete the party 1 The words freedom and liberty, are diminishing the true meaning of the abstract concept they try to explain. The true nature of freedom is such, that the human mind is unable to comprehend it, so we make a cage and name it freedom in order to give a tangible meaning to what we dont understand, just as our ancestors made gods like Thor or Zeus to explain thunder. -Teknoman2- What? You thought it was a quote from some well known wise guy from the past? Stupidity leads to willful ignorance - willful ignorance leads to hope - hope leads to sex - and that is how a new generation of fools is born! We are hardcore role players... When we go to bed with a girl, we roll a D20 to see if we hit the target and a D6 to see how much penetration damage we did. Jelei
Fighter is probably going to be my first. Almost purely from mechanical stand-point. Fighter probably just is going to be one of the hardest classes to screw up completely. A class that I can use throughout the whole game while learning and getting comfortable with the system and still be fairly powerful, thinking via the companions and how they work about what kind of character I should make next, what kind of build. The it is probably going to be a wizard. Or chanter, or cipher. Those really are the classes I'm perhaps most interested about. Or if I can make that cynical, disgruntled excomminucated priest who doesn't like his god, I'm going to play as a priest at some point
Shaz
Rogues stole my heart decades ago, and I only get my heart back when I play one, so that's what I'll be. I do love Rogue gameplay, aside from those games that make me despondent because their idea of Rogues is 'sneaky backstabbity stabbity damage dealer' and nothing more. Oh, there's so much more, and it's the so much more that makes my heart go pitter patter. I'll probably also try out Cipher and maybe a Chanter or Druid. We shall see! Perhaps when we get more info on the classes I'll feel compelled to try out a Barbarian or Monk! Edited November 21, 2012 by Shaz
Brother Pain
Assuming that the nay-sayers don't get their will and change the class from what it should be*, my first character will likely be a monk. It depends of course. If it's implemented at all like the BG2 monk**, I'll probably pick another class, fighter or rogue most likely. *Unarmed and unarmored highly mobile melee class. **Very late bloomer that's basically useless until endgame. Juneau
Urghhhhh - I think I'll revisit this once we have more on how each class will play but I voted for Wizard *FOR NOW* Normally I'll choose between the following; 1. warlocks/sorcerers (not the standard wizard set ups) pure death and destruction. With an evil character 2. rogue - Depends on how the game is going to set them up.... I like stealth, assassination builds before backing off and letting the heavy/ranged raid death. 3. paladin/fighter - Think a-typical tank, taunts, lots of health - My run into a fight laughing!! It is because it is just, in general, an unpopular archetype. Look at movies and other popular media, how often is the Hero the uncouth savage from the north who wears skulls and bear pelts for clothes while simultaneously seeming to lack in education? Not very often, and this is what most people think when they hear the word "Barbarian". In truth Conan for example was actually pretty darn smart, he didn't become the ruler of Aquilonia because he yelled really loud and was good at killing people. I am sure those talents did help though. The movies have never really done the character justice, but thankfully they also toned down other aspects of those books.
