Raithe
This might catch a few peoples interest: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/connoralexander/coyote-and-crow Coyote and Crow is a tabletop role playing game set in an alternate future of the Americas where colonization never occurred. Instead, advanced civilizations arose over hundreds of years after a massive climate disaster changed the history of the planet. You'll play as adventurers starting out in the city of Cahokia, a bustling, diverse metropolis along the Mississippi River. It's a world of science and spirituality where the future of technology and legends of the past will collide. The game is created and led by a team of Native Americans representing more than a dozen tribes and we've built a game that both Natives and non-Natives will thrill to explore and build upon. Pledges include things like getting a pdf copy of the game, while a physical copy gets donated to a Reservation library. 1 "Cuius testiculos habeas, habeas cardia et cerebellum." Azdeus
NSFW, filmed in vertical A train plows into an empty bus in Sweden. Civilization, in fact, grows more and more maudlin and hysterical; especially under democracy it tends to degenerate into a mere combat of crazes; the whole aim of practical politics is to keep the populace alarmed (and hence clamorous to be led to safety) by menacing it with an endless series of hobgoblins, most of them imaginary. - H.L. Guard Dog
I found this very interesting. Read it this morning after looking up that solar clock IC posted. Since leaving the heliopause voyager 1’s velocity has been fairly constant at 38k MPH, about 17 km/s. That’s extremely fast obviously. But it’s nowhere near relativistic velocity you’d think right? You would be wrong. Since Sept 5 1977 Voyager 1 has spent 15981 days in space. But from its perspective it has only been in space 15959 days. Even at the (comparatively) low speed of 3.6 AU/yr time is still passing quicker for us than it. 11 seconds per hour after all this time. Wild stuff. At least I thought that was pretty cool Edited March 9, 2021 by Guard Dog 3 "While it is true you learn with age, the down side is what you often learn is what a damn fool you were before" Thomas Sowell
ComradeYellow
https://www.quora.com/When-did-gamers-become-associated-with-the-right Now I know why I seem to be completely out of touch with gamers these days. I always assumed gamers would become more left wing with age like me and not right but I was way off. Mostly, after Gamergate. It went like that: Gamers were living their own lives, game companies were assuming they were mostly male, which was a gross exaggeration. Some Anita Sarkessiaan went on to make a series of videos about how games were sexist, starting in 2013. That was probably unwarranted, as games mostly reflected the broad culture of when they were made, but it does not matter anymore. Because the gamers did not like it. If you know anything about stereotypical gamers, it should not surprise you: Anita represents everything they hate about the real world, and she attacked their safe space. Gamers’ counter-attack was immature (which isn’t surprising, really - many of us gamers are children), but really massive. The resulting fight made feminists hate gamers, and gamers hate feminists. Since feminists are associated with the left, gamers are now associated with the right. Overall, I’d say it was a big loss for feminism. They could have got gamers as allies if they did it right. Lexx
I'm certainly not right leaning, but I also loath the whole Anita Sarkessiaan crap. Her videos were garbage, and this whole victim-game of her and others like her was infuriating. I'm not against feminism or similar things, like, at all, but what people like Anita Sarkessiaan did was just trying to weasel money out of other peoples pockets and riding the "look, I am so famous and they hate me for being different!"-wave. I'd say these people did more to hurt feminist movements with their crowbar- and victim-approach than gamers ever could. Thing is Sarkeesian shouldn't have even been on the radar of what GamersGate claimed to be about (she wasn't a game journalist, but an academic researcher). The fact that they kept bringing her up demonstrated that what they claimed to be about had nothing to do with what they actually felt aggrieved over. And honestly most of the attention Sarkeesian gets is from the people who don't like her magnifying what she's said. 2 I cannot - yet I must. How do you calculate that? She's definitely a media personality rather than an academic. I'd agree completely with Hurlshot, except for her not cashing in on the harassment. That she 100% did, how to maximise publicity and run a media campaign is one of the things she would have learnt in her communications courses.
Amentep
I didn't know she had a tie with an emag; my understanding was that she'd expanded a media studies paper into a kickstarter to create videos for a youtube channel and that kickstarter caused controversy since she initially abandoned what was promised to do other things. That said, I wouldn't know about her at all if it wasn't for people who hater her magnifying her reach by retweeting that they hate her. I cannot - yet I must. How do you calculate that? Some things she said made sense, but it was drowned out with a bunch of Post-Modernist nonsense. But Sarkeesian would have remained in obscurity if not for belligerent a-hole* gamers. Unlike Jack Thompson, she never called for any games to be banned. She just had opinions about them. And she should be able to voice her opinion without rape threats. That’s kinda the basic of civil discourse. I mean, I’m a huge fan of Michael Mann movies, including his critically maligned recent work. But I don’t threaten film critics just because they’re objectively wrong. *Not saying all, or even most gamers, are a-holes, because I do think the media too often tar all gamers with the same brush. I mean, football supporters who throw bananas at black footballers are not held up as representing all sport fans. But gamers are judged by the worst among us. The magazine she partnered was Bitch Magazine, which I thought would run into the naughty word filter but it seems not. And it does have a physical media version so far as I can tell, so not actually an emag. That was for Tropes vs Women, prior to the kickstarter. Feminist Frequency was a product of her time in university, but so far as I am aware was always media analysis rather than academic in nature. It certainly doesn't claim to be academic in nature, from their site: "Feminist Frequency began with a borrowed camera and some lights. In 2009, Anita Sarkeesian started making videos examining pop culture from a feminist perspective. The videos aimed to analyze modern media’s relationship to gender, race, and sexuality, and we have always advocated for the just treatment of all people, offline and online." Lexx
It could have worked if they wouldn't have tried to make it a huge series, because obviously they weren't able to get a good amount of quality content together and instead just hamfisted whatever little bits they could get their hands on. Releasing new episodes took them them longer and longer, and the episodes just became more and more stupid up to the point where it felt like they misrepresented elements in games just to reinforce their agenda. IMO they should have just not tried to do it this big. Smaller in scope and a higher quality would probably have caused less rage. /Edit: It's been too long and I barely remember the details, but I wondered if they covered positive elements in games or if they were just crapping on everything? Tried to google it right now, but can't find anything related to that. /Edit2: Just checked into a few videos at random and skipped arond a bit. It's so preachy and condescending, ugh. No wonder there was so much road rage. Kinda happy this whole thing is pretty much over now and we don't have to read about it anymore every day.
