  1. A: How do you save a Gnome from drowning? B: I don't know... A: Good! Something like that? Or that elves steal babies and use them to fuel their sinister, evil rituals. Never ask a Dwarf to hold your wallet if it has any gold in it. Typical racial prejudices. Not sure anything similar could work well with genders though (not without just parroting real world issues and resorting to common stereotypes).
  2. I tried to do the math with one of the popular threads (Romance tread #712 RIP) and arrived at the streamlined number 0.6% (backers participating in the poll). Assuming that this was the approx. max participation level of backers vs. active posters (being generous because it takes no commitment to vote in a poll), I found it encouraging that the 94.6% other backers had the sense to not hang out on video game forums.
  3. Would make excellent material for a Warhammer Fantasy/40K game. Slaaneshi cultists are not above a bit of ritual virgin sacrifice, but so far we know next to nothing about PE's setting, cultures or "Darkness" levels.
  4. Seems like people didn't get the hint and civil discussion is impossible.
  5. Could also work the other way around in matriarchal society (think D&D drow). You better grovel good or your balls ends up on the dinner plate, then go back to work the fields for food production. Alternatively it could be completely irrelevant. For some interesting stuff, check up on Celtic history and culture. Both sexes were warriors, merchants, rulers etc. Interesting people the Celts.
  6. With old school rpg's seems to come old school temper tantrums. I'm not sure it's much different from the old BIS/Interplay boards (I wasn't around on the old BIS boards, following stuff on UseNet instead)?
  7. Time to lay off the personal insults or this thread joins the romance threads... just a friendly hint.
  8. While I can't say they were bad games, they just weren't RE. It's like buying vanilla ice cream only to open it up and find it's chocolate.(And in this hypothetical example, I'm allergic to chocolate) http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/stainlessgames/carmageddon-reincarnation I know. Didn't remember to check it before it expired. Good to see it got some funding. Still waiting for it to be finished though
  9. Thread reached retirement age... more news here
  10. Start of old thread End of old thread I'm fairly sure I bought one of those newer Resident Evil games (the action kind, not the survival horror kind) on Gamersgate once when it was on a dirt cheap sale. Maybe I should give it a try some day. Still waiting for a new Carmageddon
  11. Most recent PC's are probably going to be overkill for the Infinity Engine games. Not so mention the huge pixels on a 42". I mean, I find IWD2 in 800x600 on my 30" monitor to be "large pixels" Good on you though, it's always nice to have something runs games and programs you like rather than being limited to run what your hardware allows you to run
  12. Isn't it just a matter of the "scale"? If it is obvious "dark" or "light" (see above comment about selfish etc.) it's just a choice between more extreme endpoints than choosing something that is of less consequence to You (although the consequences of others affected by your choice may vary). If I'm a genocidal xenophobe, choosing to eradicating all gnomes might be the obvious "light" choice because it makes the world a better place. If the choice is to eradicate all gnomes OR eradicate all elves, it becomes muddled and a "grey" choice. Of course, if I'm partial to pointy eared tree huggers and obnoxious vertically challenged demi humans, I might find it a hard choice. Sort of hard to find a set of choices between alternatives that provides a "challenge" for all players. Chances are it's going to be hit and miss every now and then despite best intentions.
  13. Good and evil is sort of a matter of perspective, isn't it? Like real life, it gets down to choices about being selfish or altruistic, empathic or sociopath, strong or despondent, brave or coward, proactive or apathetic etc. What you consider right according to your values is "good", what you consider wrong is "evil". Just my $0.25
  14. Wrecked my game of Icewind Dale. I made it to Lonelywood (HoW expansion) and thought I would "swap out" two of my team members. Deleted two members, created two new ones and wanted to give them approximately the same exp. as the dismissed members. Couldn't get the console commands to work (yes, I know it's case sensitive) and thought hey, that's what Dalekeeper is for. Turned out to be a bad idea as it messed up my party completely. I now have three Gorth's which are 3 three different classes but with Gorth's (a paladin) stats and skills. No wonder my thief couldn't lockpick anything Of course my previous saves are now also overwritten, so I guess it's time to play Icewind Dale 2.
  15. Sparkling stuff just doesn't belong in a vampire setting >_
  16. Indeed. Too many threads created on the subject. Anybody feel like creating a new one (and only one) on vancian and cooldown stuff?
  17. Oh, somebody else played Forbidden Forest?
  18. The only puzzle games I know of in VMBL are the sneaking games... sneak there, place camera, sneak there, acquire that etc.
  19. So many little details that it's hard to find a starting and an ending point. Among the small things that makes me laugh are the three kids in Icewind Dale that sits around a squirrel and talks about poking it with a stick or in Kotor2 on Onderon where the queen would have given you a larger reward except somebody looted the museum (if you, the player plundered the treasures there).
  20. Yeah, from top of my head, the Hitman games comes from Denmark, the STALKER games from Ukraine, the Gothic games from Germany, the Space Rangers games from Russia, the Divinity games from Belgium, the Witcher games from Poland and there are lots more. You don't need to live outside those parts of the world to be in the gaming industry (as a consumer or a producer).
  21. Hmm... I got IV, V and VI off GOG. I wonder if they don't have VII too... yep Ultima VII Complete Added to my wishlist.
  22. They did some good VO for that little skit too.
  23. I don't know if it's the greatest, but it's definitely on my top 3 The downside to having played crpgs for many years is that some of the older ones tends to "slip" from your memory despite being masterpieces of their time. Is comparing a 25 year old game to a 2 year old game a fair comparison or should it be held up against it contemporaries? In the beginning was the dungeon crawler and it was good... First real fun "crpgs" (although I'm sure somebody today would shoot down the idea of calling the rpg's but that's a different can of worms), Temple of Apshai and Sword of Fargoal, which had gfx on the C64, followed by Rogue, where your '@' had to fight 'r's and 'k's while collecting '!'s and '?'s... all good fun Then I bought Lords of Midnight. Most awesome game ever and on my top 3 too. Later bought Doomdarks Revenge (the sequel) too and it was also awesome. Later came Bards Tale and Phantasie and it was still fun to play crpgs. Then I got hooked on the Ultima's, starting with III and being flabbergasted by the awesomeness of IV. Next one i played must have been VI and it was an instant turnoff, all style and no substance. I also played some of the SSI games (the 3 xyz of Krynn games) but the shops never had any of the other D&D titles (Curse of Azure Bonds, something about Silver Blades and some other), but it was still fun and atmospheric for its time. Last of the great games i remember from then was a gem called "Bloodnet". A cyberpunk rpg/adventure hybrid game featuring gadgets and bloodsuckers. Then came a long period where I don't remember the crpgs from. I vaguely remember some isometric continous world game on my Commodore Amiga, but I don't remember the name. Years later again I discovered Fallout and life was good. It was actually the game that made me cave in and retire my Amiga for a newly purchased PC (because the darn thing didn't run on the dos emulator on the Amiga). That was the beginning of my love affair with first Interplay and Black Isle when crpgs got their own division. PS:T and BG2 followed as did IWD, Fallout 2 and IWD2. Loved them all. I have a strained relationship with BG because I never really got into it and just play it for completeness sake. I loved VMBL and played through it a handful of times (Nosferatu being my favourite playthrough) and I also fell for the Witcher, completing that one a handful of times, trying different alliances and choices. I never could get into Witcher 2 though. Not sure what's wrong with it but it just doesn't appeal to me. I tried Mass Effect on an xbox and didn't like it, but eventually bought ME2 and found myself pleasantly surprised. Also got DA:O but skipped DA2 after trying the demo. As for ME3... well enough said about that in other threads. It was a mixed bag for me (and not because of the ending).
  24. Now you are getting emotional again. Nope. Quit making stuff up or maybe you're just trolling. I don't know. It works both ways... Quit making stuff up or maybe you're just trolling. I don't know.
  25. I think they underestimated the speed with which they reached their bare bones minimum target (which would allow them to create a game, showcasing their ideas and setting), I'm not sure they had banked on several millions either, which means the stretch goals have mostly been about expanding the "glorified proof of concept" into a full scale game. I for one is happy to see them not over committing themselves with hard/impossible to fulfill promises. I would rather see a complete product this time around than a showcase of unfulfilled potential.
