Sensuki's Suggestions #025: Backer Beta Version Review v301 bb
GreyFox replied to Sensuki's topic in Backer Beta Discussion
Great points and videos and I tend to agree with literally all of that so we seem to have very similar opinions. One thing that is awkward to me is that you see butterflies, leaves falling, and those dandelion things floating around but the grass and trees don't move/don't have animation....something that seemed to bother me a bit while watching. Wonder if the animations were causing too much performance issues. I guess BG did have that eagle that would fly around the screen and let out a startling screech every once in a while....seriously that **** was deafening. -
Really old player here.
GreyFox replied to Felthar's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
My reflexes are sharper than they've ever been, and I'm no teenager. I admire the optimism, but trust me. The downhill curve is inevitable. Agreed. I used to be really in on Dota and Starcraft like 5 years ago. I was a very competent player but I've tried to return to my former glory and its imposible I can't micro as good as I used to. My brother (he's a doctor) said that the brain degenerates at a faster rate after 25 for actions we do even on a daily basis. That explains why you can't find many video game pro players after 30s. I'm with you man I just turned 30 and like many here played the BG series when I was around 14 years old. Before that it was Fallout, Eye of The Beholder on DoS, and PnP DnD, etc etc. It seems we are a fraternity of sorts. I also was really big into SC/BW and it bothers me a lot actually that I can't return to my former self with SC2. I do keep up with ESports and watch WCS and pro games for SC2. Bomber just won WCS America and he is 26 so that's cool I guess. But yea I think we all hope that games like Divinity OS, PE, WL2, and TTN bring back another golden age of CRPGs.....looks promising so far. -
You remember the other day how I was saying that the lower camera angle isn't good for combat? Well that's why. It's even worse when tall creatures (such as Forest Lurkers) are in front of player characters, you can't even see your own units. I know mechanics are more important than graphics, especially at this stage, but that screenshot is a bit of an eye opener. I hope work will be done to clean up the display of the player models (and enemy models) so they are distinct and clear in any environment. I always thought something looked weird from several of the screenshots I've seen but this close up certainly does look odd. Sensuki is saying that it's from the lower camera angle so that's curious...I wonder why they went with a different angle than the IE games? I also wonder if that is something that could be changed or is it at that angle for reasons we've yet to be privy to. @Sensuki I just read your last post and was wondering why you think it won't be fixable?

I think I am opposite of this...I don't want to see any floating text or numbers...I hope there is a way to turn that off. It's been awhile since I checked up here so maybe that does exist already but if not I REALLY hope they make that optional.

Funny they only train to hit? If we are going with "realistic" then misses are much more frequent as living beings usually have great sense of self preservation and they train to NOT GET HIT as well.... Shields/Armor also are not designed to reduce incoming damage...you know that right...? Hey King Henry how you doing man? I got this new state of the art shield that now reduces damage to your troops by half instead of 75%!!!
-
Damage range for weapons takes care of lower, middle, and high grounds on what constitutes a hit. With grazes there is no reason for weapons to have a damage range. If they keep this system then they should just do static weapon damage and it would probably make balancing weapons easier anyway. 12 damage longsword would do 6 on a graze....easy to deal with. Now if only might didn't give a % increase in damage we could get rid of those silly decimals....0.2 damage....really? Personally I'd rather have no grazes with weapon ranges and I certainly would rather miss or do 0 damage than 0.2.

Is Might a Dump Stat? Is Perception THE DPS stat?
GreyFox replied to Fiebras's topic in Backer Beta Discussion
I agree the new stats are pretty much...wtf? Int is the tank stat....lol....wait until the public gets a hold of that one. Dex isn't Dex but simply Speed and it's benefit isn't apparent and many people are going to view it as artificial unless it's explained well in game. If it stays this way it will be grossly un-intuitive and I'd bet many players outside of these forums are not going to "get it", not to mention the name changes that should follow. There are more clear choices now than there were before...and range as a stat is just as gimmicky as interrupt as a stat was. -
So you are using a 2H weapon on your rogue? It's not like rogues usually use 1h weapons or anything crazy retards trying to use smallish weapons on a character class known for smaller more precise weapons. Guess they haven't gotten around to balancing weapon damage. What is the issue with 1h weapons atm in your opinion?
-
Higher deflection and abilities that rise deflection and DT. So basically they should take less damage than other front liners. I see, the wiki has been updated tremendously lately but seems like they will also be doing less damage than other front liners too so they will also be fighting for longer yes?
-
I'm all for the Fighter being improved upon as he totally stunk before but how could this be something you would be on board with/like? The rogues purpose is supposed to be as a damage dealer and if he can't out damage a self proclaimed 'front liner' then wtf is going on and why make a rogue at all?
-
Agreed the way it works now the system actually fights itself and it should be just one shared inventory. Lack of weight further promotes this. I voted for the IE way though with BoH and taking stuff from the stash out of combat with per character inventory. Just the way it's implemented now is sort of half assed and they just need to go all the way with it.

Benefit of speed
GreyFox replied to BlueLion's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
Or the aura should reduce recovery time...."speed" in this game isn't intuitive whatsoever as there are too many different things related to such nomenclature. Hell even Dexterity gives action speed....but it's not called SPEED it's called Dexterity.....yup not buying/getting it. -
Honestly I hope the game does have decent death animations and enemies stay on the ground and expire some time after death and not like ghosts... Also many others have been annoying by the idle characters and have state numerous times that the game needs more combat animations and "busy" animations. As it stands now it looks pretty lame without hit reactions or any sort of filler animations and no "guard" animation to show a readied state.

Do you get Attributes on Level Up?
GreyFox replied to Pray's topic in Pillars of Eternity: Stories (Spoiler Warning!)
Maybe 4-5 stat increases TOTAL throughout the entire series of games through level ups....if there are tomes or spells or some other way to permanently increase stats then that's fine as well. The stats in this game don't actually amount to very much in that the bonuses are not that great so maybe there is more room for adding a decent amount of stats but probably not. -
An attribute that just gives speed is....SPEED imo...no real tie to Dex and no one looking at Dex is going to be thinking what it actually gives you in this so another change is in order honestly. If Stamina wasn't intuitive Dex is even less so now.

Exactly...range is now like interrupt was...there is absolutely no reason range should be based on a stat. And now that they have a stat that separates melee and ranged...they may as well separate them for accuracy(and whatever else) too since I could have sworn they were trying to make each stat equal for everything...welp now that's out the window so open season IMO. Barbarians also look like the defacto tank now since Int is clearly better for them than a Fighter...what AoEs do fighters have that benefit them like the Barb? With the way the class is set up Barbs are going to have more health, deflection, and AoE(because no duh you're going Int with him).....and the 6 health multiplier.... yea bye bye Fighter. Seriously they were worried about putting deflection on Dex but it's going to have the same effect as their previous fears, just for different classes. At least putting deflection on Dex would be equal for all melee classes(and all classes in general really). If the idea was to have any class take any set of stats well this makes Int an always yes for Barbs...and it is much more useful for them combined with deflection than most if not every other melee class. Dex and Perception look very underwhelming. What exactly am I getting with action speed and is that shown in game anywhere.... Better off cutting Perception and giving Dex accuracy and make Perception a skill like Acrobatics, Stealth, etc.

Please make engagement arrows "stand out" more
GreyFox replied to thelee's topic in Backer Beta Discussion
Can you turn off engagement arrows? -
I would definitely use a pistol in the off hand on a rogue type character and a rapier/cutless haha that'd be great.
-
I agree with some of the other people that no encumbrance = no per character inventory.... If we are going the non weight route....use that whole screen as a singular party inventory.... I'd just do it the IE game way if it was up to me but a full party inventory system may work out just fine...it just ...looks/feels weird with a screen like that but each character with 16 slots....

A Positive Video: Josh Sawyer and Pillars of Eternity
GreyFox replied to Sensuki's topic in Backer Beta Discussion
Many people have critiqued Sensuki not sure where you are getting there are exceptions he's open game like anyone else. But I would very much maintain that someone was a sissy if they thought he was overly harsh(as stated in the op)...and there is plenty of evidence to support that he has been fair...so for me to take the stance that "sensuki has been perfectly fair in his critique of the game"....well I'd say that's perfectly justified and certainly not excusing him from critique. I like that snowflake reference earlier...maybe some people just melt fast or maybe the RPG Codex has desensitized me haha...now that place is harsh... Cool, good to hear. His point was fair as a general statement I agree. -
A Positive Video: Josh Sawyer and Pillars of Eternity
GreyFox replied to Sensuki's topic in Backer Beta Discussion
This isn't about Sensuki, the video and my conversation on this thread sorted out what I wished to know - his favourite parts of PoE. Please calm down, its this brash reponse which gets us nowhere, and (as I said in point 3 of my comment to you) the people who use this tone with the devs damage the worthwhile points they try to make 'with hyperbole + unnecessary confrontation'. I hope you understand. High horse riding gets us no where either so once people step down from that we can indeed proceed. Once again his thoughts have been well documented all throughout the forum...it's not hard to find so my original statement in this thread is still applicable and I maintain that. Anyone PMing him about his methods were foolish and clearly not well informed....which is what *I* was saying....if it isn't about Sensuki then wtf is going on since that is clearly what I was responding about(people PMing him). So I guess the confusion lies in how you keep responding to me if you agree that Sensuki is in the right and/or this isn't about Sensuki... Maybe I could have more clearly referenced the backlash that he got in his PMs but seems easy to follow to me...I can definitely come off as brash and I don't spend too long on my posts since I'm usually very busy.
