I guess they want combat to be over this fast or have they said anything about slowing it down a bit more? -
My old school solid UI mock-up for Pillars of Eternity
GreyFox replied to Grotesque's topic in Backer Beta Discussion
I saw that some sort of U frame was in the newest IE mod but does Grotesque have anyone doing his actual version or is this mostly for looks still? -
I hope Dex gets a buff but I'm one of the people who thinks it should add more than just speed....otherwise just have a SPEED stat... Even OE uses mostly 2H weapons in their playthroughs...
-
Well Dexterity needs to not suck so I wish that was new...this may be the first RPG ever created where Dex is useless.

What have you (Obsidian) done with the assetbundles?
GreyFox replied to Sensuki's topic in Backer Beta Discussion
OE i think you guys will revert the change but I'll add to the thread asking for them to revert that change so modding can be done as quickly and inclusively as possible. Thanks! -

Well from my experience as a JR. Developer I started out at 40,000 at a small company in Charleston, SC after my internship. I was doing CI, QAE/Bugs at that time on a home grown product. I moved on to a bigger government contract doing Performance Testing and Optimization on a big application used by veterans. I've been with the company going on four years now and I am north of 60,000(not giving exact details for obvious reasons). I'm in a unique hybrid role where I do QAE and Development...so I write load, soak, performance tests etc but also do code or query changes, service call changes etc. I have an Associates in Computer Programming from a well respected Tech School here in SC and am currently still going for my BA in CS:Programming(just taking it slow as I have full family(wife/kids)) I think it all depends on education, timing, experience, etc. I have some previous things that help my current situation such as a Top Secret security clearance from when I was in the military. This allowed me to easily get the clearances I'd need for my current team and I have access too and am trusted with production data and connections. I started off as an intern making 10 bucks and hour and just busted my butt and had strong work ethic. Just show everyone through your actions and words how passionate you are and genuinely work hard. If you are having trouble getting a job I'd say take what you can get from anywhere to get some experience...anything is better than nothing...and you'll make contacts and such. I've met and worked with so many people and helped this or that person that I'd have a job somewhere easily if I left my current location. So get in there make your friends and contacts and just do it...it really is like that...just have to do it. FWIW if I had a BA I could have asked for more than 40,000 in my specific case, either that or more experience. Also we have people working here with literally no degree or higher education...You'll find that in this industry it's better to actually be able to do stuff than to point at pieces of paper...so being able to show off your experience or what you can do is more important overall than the piece of paper...on the other-hand that piece of paper usually allows you to be in the position to show what you know so it sucks sometimes...for me I just went the intern route. So I'm not in game design or development but the job is obviously similar. GL to you in our efforts.

Combat in PoE
GreyFox replied to juanval's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
I think some of the mods will clean up PoE combat...can't wait to get rid of the lame moshpit and terrible design decisions. PoE modded will probably play just fine compared to the IE games. -
Why is this ****ty little company making a D&D game....this should be given to Bioware/Obsidian or hell even Beamdog would be better than some N:DS developer who does **** like hanna montana games...wtf...lol....such fail by WOTC/HASBRO. LOL I was like "wow cool" at first now it's just lulz...cooldowns and stuff too...such a waste.

I'll have to PM you and ask you which mods you use when you play the game because it seems you literally play exactly like I do so I would probably just go along with your version of the game. Thanks for all the effort you've put into testing and showing of PE.

am suspecting that more than anything, the choice to go with the current poe paper doll were a matter o' a largely uncontested cost v. benefit analysis. it would have taken effort and art resources to make an appealing 2d paper doll. why go through that effort when you already got the 3d game avatar? is there options that would look better than what we got? sure, but current paper doll is functional... and, truth-to-tell, considerably superior to the old bg and iwd paper dolls. is good enough and, from a development perspective, relative painless compared to other options. HA! Good Fun! Those are all valid reasons for sure and your suspicions are likely right on. I personally don't care because graphics are somewhere near the very bottom of things I rate a game on. I only care from the standpoint of negative attention it will garner as almost everyone notices how it doesn't look good, especially compared to the rest of the game.(and inevitably other 3D games)

My old school solid UI mock-up for Pillars of Eternity
GreyFox replied to Grotesque's topic in Backer Beta Discussion
That's a much better looking UI than the current one but I can't comment on it's functionality...the combat/dialog box being in the middle already makes it head and shoulders above the main game UI. -
I think the art and style looks good they just made a few bad decisions that muck some things up... Like Sensuki said the angle and ratio and the lighting could be considered an issue if it prevents further improvements on other areas of the game. Also the 3d paper-doll thingy was a bad decision as that 3D doesn't compare at all to the rest of the game or the parts done in 2D....could have totally done a prettier paper-doll that wasn't in 3D.

I've said it before but it really is going to take some sort of story to get me to believe that I can heal up in 8 hours when the "healing" only affects my stamina. It really seems like a doing it different just 'cuz type of thing that will have minor or rarely referenced reasons as to why in the lore/story. I'd be really if not pleasantly surprised if I'm wrong on this. Either way I can't wait to hear it for the lulz or for teh coolz one or the other.

Population Density?
GreyFox replied to Magnificate's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
Well yea that's what I was talking about so I definitely agree with that...it adds to the depth and the perceived size of the areas. -
Merchant Gold

Stun is of course completely correct here and there is no problem at all. -
I would imagine for the same reason that we can create nuclear reactions to generate enormous explosions, but have yet to discover a way to use nuclear bombs to mend wounds or fix a broken arm. Magic is not just some all-purpose energy by definition. A given author of a given world could define it that way, but then, he has to have reasons for it to be that way, too. I hardly see people explaining in detail how and why magical energy can be used to undo wounds and fix bones, other than "So you can have fun undoing damage in combat and tossing HPs at people! 8D!", which I don't see as any more reasonable of an explanation than having it gone "because tactical combat." Just for what it's worth. In the most objectively-treated approaches I've seen, healing magic is quite limited. In Robert Jordan's The Wheel of Time series, for example, people can heal wounds, but it still uses the wounded person's own biology to do so. So, if someone was cut in half, for example, a channeler (magic user) could probably heal them, but they'd probably then die from the exertion on their body from stitching their two halves back together in a matter of seconds. Not only that, but it takes a ton out of the caster, too. Eh it's not about using the same exact thing but rather the technology associated with it....for your example....http://science.howstuffworks.com/nuclear-medicine.htm Radiation therapy, while not a nuclear bomb, is clearly derived from the same/related science discoveries and is being put to use for reasons other than destruction. So clearly it's not hard to imagine taking a form of divine energy and using it for harm or help.

Population Density?
GreyFox replied to Magnificate's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
Like some others....I always just assume you get a slice of the actual city in the game and not the entire actual canon village. Take BG2 for example...in many of those zones you actually do see numerous houses and buildings that you can never go to or enter and they are part of the map and in game art content...they are just not of in game importance so you cannot go there or enter them. We all are playing an RPG so some imagination still required yes? -
I agree and that's pretty much what I was saying on the first page in the thread...the track is great...just not as a main theme IMO. Which is why I said I like more pep in the step of the BG style intros. Seems that a few people like it mellow as well so not everyone is going to like everything and Justin is brave/man/crazy enough to hang around here and take the praise as well as the critiques so I give him much respect for that! He takes it all so well and we appreciate the back and forth no doubt.

My old school solid UI mock-up for Pillars of Eternity
GreyFox replied to Grotesque's topic in Backer Beta Discussion
That is definitely the best old school looking UI so nice job there. It would have to be a bit more functional like Adam was saying but yea it could definitely work. -
Expect to see a lot more of these types of rants especially from the average user.... Pretty much the bed they made and a lot of his points are valid but yea won't get taken seriously because it was too ranty....more will come just wait until the masses get a hold of some of these decisions that were made in the game. At least we have Sensuki/Bester.
