I don't know about you, but I can't count the number of times summoning a skeleton warriors help me against liches and other high level casters. Having them waste wail of the banshee on my minions is a GOOD thing, because even if they somehow manage to break through my skeleton warrior's 90% magic resistance, I just simply summon more.

Solo Class
bonarbill replied to Nirgal's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
Considering how there are MANY CRPGs out there without party members, I wouldn't really call it the most "meaningful" aspect of a CRPG. In fact, party interaction with your party members wasn't that popular until Torment and BG2 came out (lets be honest, there were many party based CRPGs before, but your party members were mostly mutes). -
I thought the Dock and Orc Caves section of the game were far worse than the end-game, trudging through the same enemies with no variety and the impression that the developers were just adding padding to the whole thing. That's my problem with both NWN games (even though I like both of them). There seems to be a huge number of trash enemies just for sake of making the game longer.

Update #56: Paladins and Wild Orlans
bonarbill replied to Darren Monahan's topic in Pillars of Eternity: Announcements & News
Rogues focusing on single target burst damage.. Barbarians focusing on AOE... Paladin focusing on buffing others.. Why the heck do these class differences sound like an MMO? I really hope each of these classes can do more than just than what's listed above.- 200 replies

Update #56: Paladins and Wild Orlans

Paladin's abilities seem way to MMO like to my tastes, but I guess I have no right to judge until I play the game.- 200 replies

Holy Avenger
bonarbill replied to Sarex's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
I don't think forced restrictions add character or interesting game play experiences.. I admit it does seem forced, but I see nothing wrong with it if it's only on a few items here or there, especially if you have a strong lore reason for it. For example, in the game "Fire Emblem: Genealogy of Holy war, a character name Shanan from had major Odo holy blood because he was the descendant of the holy warrior Odo. Therefore only he was allowed to wield the legendary sword balmung. The sword gave him unique power and fit well with his holy ancestry. Agree that arbitrary restrictions suck, but if there strong lore reason for it, then I don't see anything wrong with unique weapons for certain characters. THey don't have to be the best weapons in the game, but just merely something personal and interesting that fits the class/character and its lore. It's no different than NPCs getting unique skills (and since I'm assuming the main character in PE is the "Chosen one", I'm sure he's going to get unique skills in addiction to normal class skills). -
Holy Avenger
bonarbill replied to Sarex's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
That blows if that's true. I know Josh cares about the balance of the game, but sometimes I think aesthetics should overtake balance to provide interesting gameplay experiences. I very much like weapons that have a story and are unique to certain characters, classes, or races. -
Just ... no. Morally simple situations can be gripping, but not intellectually stimulating. Having 'pure' characters or forces of good and evil is useful in some cases, but they greatly limit roleplaying and what stories you can tell. Morality is always a quagmire of context, and stories are more interesting, and honestly, realistic, when good actions often advance lesser evils and vice versa. Paladins, in particular, are fun to play because what is good and what is lawful easily conflict with one another. They are compelling because they acquire guilt and bear the burden of enforcing a rigid code on an ill-defined world. Even a paladin killing enemies, whether another human or just a goblin, is a morally gray action. In these games, lethal combat, I remind everyone, occurs out of circumstance and not a careful, methodical weighing of who deserves to die and who doesn't. My paladin in BG2 doubtlessly cut down some bandits that could have been redeemed, but, lacking the ability to safely restrain, send to trial, and reform all of them, I just killed them. Do you think that same problem won't exist in PE? Juggling the interplay between flawed heroes and sympathetic villains is much of what offers a compelling spectrum of roleplaying options, and engaging storytelling in general. I do acknowledge that Witcher is very dark, darker than I'd like PE to be, but it's still a very good story that's enhanced by the frustrating hunt for the lesser evil among many great ones. As to what I want PE to emulate, it's BG2, and not necessarily BG, hands down. BG2 had a sweeping story with excellent characters and a great villain. It had the best balance of personal yet epic I've seen in a game. IWD lacked the same pedigree of story and character, and while I enjoyed IWD2, it's still BG2 hands down for style and tone. As others have said, Tides of Numenera has Planescape: Torment covered. Agreed. I'm really sick and tired of the so call grey cliches that every one is obsess with these days for the sake of being "edgy" and "thought provoking".

Instant Death
bonarbill replied to Cultist's topic in Pillars of Eternity: Stories (Spoiler Warning!)
I loved getting instantly killed by liches in BG2. Wait, no I didn't. But I'll admit though, it was kind of awesome killing a high level dragon with the implosing spell in NWN. It's kind fun to use in a meta gaming kind of way, but otherwise, Save or Die spells are pretty cheap for the player and the opponent. i won't miss them at all. -
So, about priests...
bonarbill replied to Fashion Mage's topic in Pillars of Eternity: Stories (Spoiler Warning!)
Thankfully this crap doesn't exist in videogames that have clerics. That can stay in tabletop for all I care. -
I rather they just go with NWN1 and NWN2 style. Less space used, less clutter, and easier to navigate. Selecting spells and organizing items was less clunky in those game. Just because this game is based on the infinity engine games doesn't mean it should keeps the outdated concepts from the games. It's 2013, not 1998. Of course, this is just my opinion.

Honestly, I'm just hoping priest end up similar to D&D 3.5 clerics instead of 3.5 Paladins. I think anyone who play 3.5 or any of the Neverwinter Nights Games know the exact reason. -
Translations
bonarbill replied to jerf's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
My problem with translations on Western games is they are always bias towards Europe. I really wish we see more Japanese Chinese, and Portuguese translation since there are a lot gamers around the world that speak these languages. -
Controls and pathfinding needs to be a huge improvement from the IE game. I think they should look at the dota style games like League of Legends and Dota 2 for movement in an isometric game (not for gameplay though ). Character response to clicking feels "smooth", and pathfinding rarely seems to be a problem (well, 97% of the time).

I didn't find BG2's combat interesting nor challenging in an interesting way, especially during the higher levels where the strategy was, "dispell the enemy mage's defensive shields and then kill each enemy one by one." It guess that's not a problem, but it gets old when iyou have to use that lame strategy in most of the later battles.

I am always interested in whether people like Gaider and McComb really like each other. There must be loads of professional rivalry and even on a personal level I'm sure all these writers want to be known by the fans as the "best Fantasy RPG writer ever". They all are so talented but sometimes I assume there style gets dictated to by a Publisher? Who would accuse Gaider of being the best fantasy RPG writer ever? Anyway, as a backer of the game, I'm wondering who here hasn't kicked and is man or woman enough to get us MCA before the Kickstarter ends. That's not necessarily true, their last major product was published by Bethesda. *points to the new South Park game.

Steam
bonarbill replied to One-Eye Jack's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
I'll take DRM-free over cloud saving any day. And I'll gladly take Steam's ease of use and convenience over DRM free any day, of course, Steam is the only DRM I don't mind. Something like securom drm though. screw that. -
Aside from Samara's ENORMOUS and generously exposed bosom. Which I found tacky, since, as you say, she was not a sexually driven character in the slightest. I think that was added either to emphasize her motherness, or as a compromise with Morinth, since they had to look identical. Whichever they were trying to do, it was turrible. Samara's cool and all, but she looked silly as hell. Don't know where you're from, but bears over here attack people on sight.

I usually like your posts, but you always act like a unrational **** when someone mentions the word "multiplayer." So multplayer isn't going to be in the game? So freaking what? People have the right to discuss it in the topics, and I saw no one demanding it being in the game. They were merely talking about the pros and cons of multiplayer in these games, and I hope the discussion doesn't stop.
