Paladins and Bards
Bill Gates' Son replied to AlphaShard's topic in Pillars of Eternity: Stories (Spoiler Warning!)
Paladins are also divine spell casters and use auras in addition to being very good fighters. You mean just like clerics? And don't say Clerics aren't good fighters; besides AD&D, they've always been good fighters own their own without multiclassing. If they can make Paladins different in this game, then fine. But I always found them to be clerics with less spells. -
There shouldn't be a tank threat mechanic. Enemies should go after the most dangerous party member (this could vary depending on the circumstances), unless that party member is unreachable due to terrain or other party members blocking the enemy's path. I wouldn't mind having a minor taunt similar to D&D3.5, but it should only succeed at rare times (perhaps at the beginning of the fight? It kind of works that way in RL).

Paladins and Bards

フリクリ! I would want bards in a heart beat if they were like Haruko. But then I would remember this game is set in the middleages. /worthless post -
The Monk Class
Bill Gates' Son replied to Aedelric's topic in Pillars of Eternity: Stories (Spoiler Warning!)
You should definitely play Jade's Empire sometime. Sagacious Zu was definitely a smart and witty characters as far ss monk style characters go. -
The Role of Rogues?
Bill Gates' Son replied to TrashMan's topic in Pillars of Eternity: Stories (Spoiler Warning!)
I'll admit that I hated how MMOs changed the class into some sort of main damage dealer. I'll be fine if a rogue can specialize in combat, but hopefully we can specialize them using more utility. I would like something similiar to the Bounty Hunter in BG2. -
Paladins and Bards
Bill Gates' Son replied to AlphaShard's topic in Pillars of Eternity: Stories (Spoiler Warning!)
A good or evil Priest/Cleric smites others in the name of their God. A good or evil Paladin does the exact same thing. I'm not seeing a huge difference. At least, lore-wise in some games. For example, Linu from Neverwinter nights pretty much acted like a Paladin personality wise (Kind, caring, and wants to smite evil), yet she was a cleric. -
The Monk Class
Bill Gates' Son replied to Aedelric's topic in Pillars of Eternity: Stories (Spoiler Warning!)
I just think many people on this forum are bias to the whole European medieval culture thing, since many people here are from Europe. I can't blame them either, since it's an awesome setting to be proud of. I welcome diversity in this game. I really hope they showcase a whole bunch of other cultures in this game from the Late Middle ages. And yeah, maybe I'm a bit bias on seeing an Asian monk since I live in Asian country. -
Wizard class thread
Bill Gates' Son replied to NateOwns's topic in Pillars of Eternity: Stories (Spoiler Warning!)
I really like to see Wizard have the ability to heal in this game. Perhaps a specialization path in one of the elements (Like healing the spirit with fire, mend wounds with earth, heal with cleansing waters, or something else). -
Paladins and Bards
Bill Gates' Son replied to AlphaShard's topic in Pillars of Eternity: Stories (Spoiler Warning!)
I never really understood the concept of Paladins. I know there were suppose to be based on the medieval knight in shining armor, but in games many games, they usually come of as some weird hybrid of Clerics and Warriors, and yet Clerics still ended up being decent capable fighters with the right build. And in this game, I think the Priest in this game can fill the role of a holy knight. However, if they do have Paladins, please don't restrict them to a single moral code...it just seems limited. I always liked the theme of bards, but hopefully they won't simply be some mixture of a rogue and mage like in D&D. -
stick to your guns, devs
Bill Gates' Son replied to Benison's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
To be honest with you, with the huge amount of negative fan feedback on this forum, I wouldn't listen to anything the people have to say here. If Obsidian takes some suggestions, then that's fine, but I hope they won't change gameplay or story elements simply because a few fanboys have a tantrum -
Is it me, or is the whole gray thing getting just as cliche as good and evil? Pretty much every new RPG that came out lately (dragon age, the witcher 2, Skyrim, etc), are trying to be original by giving you these choices that aren't good or evil. Personally, why does it have to be one or the other? Why can't it be both? Sure, give me grey choices, but sometimes I want to be freaking evil overlord as well because I can. I don't need games questioning my morality "all the time."

Then by your logic, the thread about cooldowns should be locked as well since they already made an argument of not altering that cooldown system. And I'm kind of sick of interesting threads being deleted due to a few bad apples. I wish the mods just handle the troublemakers instead of just closing a whole topic.
-
I guess it's just Vancian magic fans just don't like the cooldown system. Cooldowns are not a bad system (although I can understand some hate since the system is used a lot in MMOs), and it can actually mimic the whole Vancian system in some ways without the resting thing.

ZOMG wasn't this the truth. Thieves were basically pointless in pnp 2nd edition D&D anyway. Need to sneak? Get the wizard with invisibility 10' radius. Clerics got Find Traps as a 2nd level spell, and it was 100% effective whereas your rogue actually had to search and roll dice. Backstab damage only multiplied the base weapon damage and was far less worthwhile than having a good strength. And they got screwed on AC and HP. As far as I remember, everybody went fighter/thief (either by multiclass or dual class), so thieves were still useful.
-
Out of curiosity, where exactly are you getting this information? Please don't say that when someone has their location visible it's more often than not European when the vast majority of people don't have their location visible. I think they got their information from a poll on this board or something (which are pretty unreliable anyway).

A dog companion?
Bill Gates' Son replied to bonarbill's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
We need a tribute to Dogmeat and Dog, so yes, I would like a dog companion. If character development is a problem, then make the dog talk. Everybody likes talking dogs. :D But seriously, dogs have been trusty companions of men for centuries, so a dog would certainly fit the game (as a full blown companion please. None of that non controllable NPC stuff. This isn't wasteland or fallout). -
Different strokes, *shrug* I'm not a big fan of oblivion, but I loved the Imperial City water front area; I spent a lot of my time there while in the thieves guild. I also like the big sewer system underground, and I used to spend a lot of my time exploring them.

Translations
Bill Gates' Son replied to jerf's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
I live in Japan (I'm an American though), and unless this game is either heavily advertised or has anime influences like art style or character types (like moe characters), then it's not going to sell at all over here. The people here have certain bias when it comes to a style of gaming. GTAIV and Fallout 3 did pretty well over here, but that's only because Bethesda and Rockstar had a ton of money to throw around. A Polish translation would be nice I guess, but from what I've seen on the internet and my RL Polish friends, most of the younger people understand English very well. Brazil is currently a big gaming market that still growing at the moment. IMO, I think the game deserves a Portuguese translation after an Italian and Russian translation. -
I'm not seeing any cons in this option, other than slightly higher development time (and as a programmer, let me tell you, something like this wouldn't be hard to implement. Just a slight rewrite to the algorithm of the main character creator). Obsidian already said that all NPCs that can join your party are optional, so you can solo the game if you wish. Now would a 1 character solo be any different than 6 player created characters story-wise?
-
The thing is though, while companions are an important part of the game, they are also optional, allowing a person to solo the game if they want. So if someone can solo the game by themselves without the NPC companions, then what's the harm in allowing that person to created additional player generated characters? IWD had this feature. BG1&2 had this feature. So I don't see why it shouldn't be a problem.

The Icewind Dale art was nice and it fit the cold deserted setting it took place in, but I really don't think that type of artwork would fit in a high fantasy game that has similarities to the late middle ages. I expect somethinjg more vibrant, more sharp. Basically, something that is similar to the artwork made in that time period.

Food
Bill Gates' Son replied to Galdegir's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
Fatigue was in Baldur's Gate and Icewind Dale, and it actually gave your characters a reason to rest even if you had full health. So, nothing wrong with bringing it back I guess. -
Honestly, I have no interest in this update, because I never cared about those harder difficulty modes (although I did like the realism mode in New Vegas). However, I'm glad to hear there is an easier mode and other toggles available for people like me who cares more about the story and exploration aspect than the battles.
