The Monk Class
Tauron replied to Aedelric's topic in Pillars of Eternity: Stories (Spoiler Warning!)
Good point. If they do Monk class, than I hope they expand on that. Not just shaolin monk type of character. Monk is nothing more but a fighter, I'd rather see it down that path a subcategory of a fighter. -
Paladins and Bards
Tauron replied to AlphaShard's topic in Pillars of Eternity: Stories (Spoiler Warning!)
Acually a druid is a cleric of sorts. What is the difference, something D&D has chosen it makes more sense in their setting? That is ok, but PE doesnt have to follow those definitions. Paladin is a fighter...a fighter with a fancy Title. Given to him by some church authority that he/she serves. I dont think it should be a class on it's own. Paladin is fighter for his faith. Rather than make it's own class, if anything it should be specialisation sort of. RP wise, your fighter can be paladin if he chooses what diety to worship. That's it. Fighter/Warrior/Soldier geting Paladin title should be after being recruted by some religious order or just have that specialisation if you as player choose to follow rules of some order of some deity that you think would be interesting to RP and if you think skills, style is worth pursuing. I agree. No ridicule. I agree on Barabrian, it is more or less what you imply. It should be subcategory, call it specialisation or focus. Reflecting fighting style of those people, so called civilised society considers "barbarians". Personally I think devs should concentrate on four archtypes and depending on character development, give us option to gain additional title. Let's say you want to be Paladin, sure...choose deity and order you want to follow, depending on those you gain additional skills, abilities asociated with that path you take. -
Paladins and Bards

I think Paladin should be part of Cleric and Fighter tree? Simply becouse that is what it is. It could be Specialisation? .more of...sword or prayer. Depending what route you go to create your character. -
Isnt that what dwarf is...a short human? Elves, pointy ears, stoic, slender humans? So far we can conclude that if half-elves exist, elves belong to human species, so one of us subspecies of another. At least we are close enough to breed. As for dwarfs...has there ever been half-dwarf in any major fanatsy setting yet? We have half-elves, half-orc, otherwordly half humans nad half this, half that etc.

Psychic powers, Cipher! To me this is just another mage archtype. Using his will power (call it intellect if you will or what they will) to bend reality and others mind...yes, another mage. Different aproach but never the less the same. Should have been a sub mage class, or specialisation.

Magic spell customisation
Tauron replied to IchigoRXC's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
Oh oh! Like Fable 3! Where you can choose to direct it or build it up around you, giving it different effects. In a cRPG, like Project Eternity, it could be elaborated even further! :D I can totally see how it could be done, different shapes would give it different pro's and con's. Like choosing a Class, either you go with the generic Warrior or you can choose one of the Kits for added pros/cons (just a parallel). A Fireball if shot straight forward, a Firewall if placed as a line, Fire Cross/Eruption if placed in a cross. Each and every one of the "geometry" could also have sub-"divisions" where you can make them larger (but weaker) or concentrated/stronger (but smaller AoE). EDIT: * Fire Ring/Meteor/Rain if placed in a ring~ Havent played Fable 3, so I wouldnt know. Ahhh, well I didnt think to overcomplicate it like that,hehe...Just simply to have firewall in a shape it fits your use. Longer than the custom shape and you spend more power/mana/stamina, depending on how magic will be used. Not just firewall, but let say you are able to manipulate other elements, like earth. In Arcanum , there were times i wished i could make shape of the wall, like around my character, for duration of the spell, until i heal or rethink my tactics. What you propse might be interesting as we dont know how magic will work. I had similar idea if they go that way. Have you played android/os game Alchemy? Basically, you start with four elements, combining them you gain different stuff...earth fire = lava, earth air = dust , etc. It is really simple yet very intuitive system and having different shapes as you propose might give different effects to it as you channel and duration of channeling, power. Of course you could save these spells, so next time you just cast the on fly. -
Magic spell customisation
Tauron replied to IchigoRXC's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
As for AoE and cone and such...I would like to see if we for exampel cast a firewall, that we are acually able to make the shape of the "wall". Pause if you will ingame, make shape than cast. I can even see some nice animations with hand movement as mage channels the energies. Remeber whn lvling higher in BG, and got several magic missiles and firearrows, dont you wish we could choose several targets instead just one? I dont know what ruleset it is, but specialisation or prestige class you could have was Arch-mage and one of perks you had was Elemental mastery..to cast anyspell and choose element you would have as damage. I kinda missed that they didnt implement that feature in NWN2. -
A mage in that setting has learned several ancient languages. So intelligence can determine how many spells per lvl you can memorise, but even if you have extreme photographic memory, you still have to channel that energy correctly. Too much too fast and KAAABOOM, you just made fire arrow to fireball..in your face! It is metaphysics we talk about, some restriction has to be made, even if you know all spell book by heart, game needs some balance. What I was saying in my previous post is way to merge all these elements.

I want magic book, the old style look, like a reall book, or plain that is more easy to navigate through. At least few options and that it is modder frendly UI. But yeah, Vancian, memorisation, defently one way or the other. It makes sense, how many "hafiz - wiz" can there be to just now all the spells on the go and why restrict "knowledge"? Isnt that puropse of the mage in lore. I always missed system for mage in Forgotten Realms to pick up some of divine magic's. There were several unique spells that were really awsome and that there wasnt a mage who thought..."hmmm, that might be usefull" let me figure those energies and make something similiar. One can implemnt several casting ways, I am for combination of these, if implemented right way it might work. Devs can work on combination of all these, memorisation, point based, etc. I am advocating for vancian also becouse it was half fun to find the spell scrolls for your mage character. It felt like reall hunt for knowledge/power. I used to argue on forums that that late lvl should have been something like quest based. You search for lost knowledge in ruins, find one piece or old tome, than you have to find all parts, get some components and than figure it out. A good story teller can make it great. Just like some tugs can see your group and think, now that is some fancy equipment, they are few we are dozen, lets kill them. So can another mage go for your spellbook. I dont see what is fuss all about. With spell book you can cast all spells available, but those your character has memorised /studied you get bonus, faster casting, less %mana cost. This way you are not handicapped and still game slightly rewards you if you choose right spells for encounter. If not, you are still not gimped, just that your character pays slightly higher cost, duran of casting, more %mana, power to cast, becouse you are acually reading from the book or scroll. There is just so many ways to make it work. In my mind it looks AWSOME :D hahaha, I am not sure how it can be implemented in game, as I am not coder and I have no clue how it can fit with their game engine.

They wouldnt be out of a place in such a context. Question be : what place would they have? Too many fantasy games have made them species that exist through procreation with eachother (which is not appealing to me) If they appear in game I advocate for having them as abominations, as they were in original RL mythology. Let us use that template in PE. That would be more original approach than what recent fanatsy genre had done considering these creatures. They might be cursed humans, elfs, dwarfs or animals either by Godlike or some magical experiment that has gone terribly wrong. Maybe they came to be, through procreation by two godlike?(again RL myth) Just let them be abominations, not some wise shaman or crap like that. They are freaks of worlds, not truly belonging in either. In that context I dont see how that would make them welcoming among humans? Unless someone is worshipping some deity through this creature by bringing it virgins even children..hell, lets make it more interesting..babies? Abomination is smart enough to not kill worshippers and have some symbiotic relation with them, maybe it's poop has magical properies, I am stabbing in the dark here. Ok, so creature is benign, still it wouldnt make it less abomination in human eyes. What we know of human nature, they would either worship it or kill it and those who worship it. In best case, they would whisper about it and pray to whatever they belive in, not to encounter it. Unless some hard times are ahead, a plague, failed crops, et cetera. Then someone screams abomination is to blame! Suddenly you see villagers with pichforks and your party being entangled in this turmoil. Do you kill the freak, collect gold and affection of towns ladies? Or do you have conscience crisis and deal in some other way? Macho-Men ???

Do not make the game isometric
Tauron replied to Bercon's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
Let troll my opinion again, so I can run under the bridge. This game isnt made becouse of old sentiment and nostalgia to the classics tech-art and sentiment towards infinity engine as 2d vs 3d, but STORY TELLING. Having all 3D rendered and full voice acting acually limits the storytelling options, especially considering the budget of the game. Most games offer you one vs another choice and ton of useless dialogue options that just gives you illusion of option and mostly forces your action, annoying. Once you cut through that bull**** and all the newst directx-xx features stopp dazzling your brains, it is exactly what you are left with, a poor, mediocre at best story telling RPG with AWSOME graphics. In the end, poorly designed and limited game. What got people here excited is MORE RP options...if you are giving me illusion of option, at least sell it good. Magic behind magic trick works as long you cant figure trick behind the magic. I would love that they add all newst 3D effects if it wont limit gameplay and storytelling that was promised to fans of classics this game is based on. -

Earning your place as party leader
Tauron replied to Nonek's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
You make interesting point, but my character as companion would at some point have to leave that group. In BG i didnt have my character as party leader. It was usually the one with most charisma that I liked to do the talking.- 36 replies

Do not make the game isometric
Tauron replied to Bercon's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
I didnt mind if game would be done all in 3D as I hoped for destructable enviroment and other "visuals" etc. and as long as it is playable in spirit of mentioned games. Still, if we have to choose betwean all stunning visuals, reactive "organic" enviroment and great story, companions, quest, gameplay etc, I choose the latter. Becouse it is becouse of that I remeber the classics games. For some reason I find BG series and IWD series worlds more 'believable' and appealing, than I did Elder scrolls games whn I look back. Whn morrow wind came out, I was like OMG OMG OMG! Now it is just meeh, I cant play this, it just doesnt feel right next to skyrim...while over the years I was able to return to BG and it was always that good feeling. Cant explain it, but there is something about the storytelling in those classics and playing it feels like you are looking at concept art, small painting just coming to life. I dont know...there is still some magic in the way those games were made, even if graphics were outdated by todays standard. If they make entire game in 3D is fine as long they deliver what we love about the classics, and some people love prerendered I guess :D -
This, me too. Also I think there should be different solutions to this, like in BG2 orrr all of mentioned should be in game if devs can implement it. Depending not just on character, but characters playstayle. Even if you play a mage, it doesnt mean you would not be a good pirate (hence ship) or fortress if you aim at nobility or just if you want to create your own organisation like we heared about so many in BG. (that we were acually fighting against) Inn sounds like something rogue would like to have, lot of travelers pass by, information passes on. Might upgrade inn to Brothel. (Bealish comes to my mind). There is just sooo many ways to implement this is it fits world and story. Still, if devs just choose to have a sort of plain house, than at least let us have an option to style that house according to our playtype. Building and refing it depending on our character type and companions we have. Has anyone seen new Xcom game...base but but you build it like an antfarm sort of. Would mind having these options here myself, so I can build my own Tower :D

Minotaurs is what I wish for as well I would not like to see minotaur as society. They are good as they are, an abomination. They are quest. They might even taste good, their horns have magical properties. They would be hunted to exctiction by humans centuries ago. Racial cleansing you say... /lol I would be ok with this, apart from the fact that I don't want any godlike party to be able to wipe an entire population in a region (a village is ok, a city maybe... a whole region... no way!) Anyway, back on topic: so what races are you exactly proposing? I like what they did in Arcanum. You had different races and it seemed they were all somehow conected. So basically you had dwarfs and as subspecies you had gnomes and haflings and mix of those. Humans are in game. So we can have as someone mentioned before Neanderthal type of men, like troglodytes, cromagnon man etc. For all that we know in this setting orcs might be humans that just developed differently or were at some point of evolution "touched" by Gods. Or other way around. There are a lot possibilities. Maybe some kind of reptilian biped? As long as they are belivable and rightly done. If there is solid backstory, lore and also there is appeal.

I like that idea. Still, if I am loosing discussion i would still like to have option to hurl firballs, you know just to show my point.
