I think all dialogue checks are charisma.

 

Armour/weapon crafting is fun, but house/settlement building seems a boring waste of time.

Well skimming, there were a large number of 0 to 3 score reviews that used "1997" in their opening paragraph. ;)

 

 

Yeah, I actually do like Metacritic user score averages just because between all the rabid fanboys and the rabid haters, an average usually does come out that gives you some idea of the game's quality, and lord knows the "professional" reviewers aren't gonna tell you anything but to throw your money at the developers. Having said that though, it's difficult to find that guy that actually argues his points and gives a fair, calculated review instead of just a 10 or a 0.

They stretched it too thin and made it a boring city management minigame where you have to unlock all sorts of things instead of just letting you go wild and build whatever you want.

The building settlements is a little bit of a pain.  You can't really clear out all the "rubbish" that's in the way in most settlement areas, and if you build a floor on a space that has bushes.. the bushes will clip up from the floor... And if you're putting in floors, walls and ceilings, they won't always click together and you get left gaps. Or you put a second floor up, build the walls, and then it will only let you connect roofing to the OUTSIDE of the walls and not the inside.

 

It's a nice idea in general, but the execution seems a bit lacking. Plus needing to sink half a dozen or so perks into it if you want to be able to build most things and connect them. I guess it makes sense that you need high Charisma if you're going to become some settlement leader, but it would be nice if the stats provided other boosts beyond just giving you access to perks.

They stretched it too thin and made it a boring city management minigame where you have to unlock all sorts of things instead of just letting you go wild and build whatever you want. 

 

Don't know why game designers waste resources with these "features". I can't even be bothered with crafting in games - pseudo realistic, time consuming filler gameplay that takes me out of the game world moreso than feeling like I'm doing something mechanical in it.

Fallout is a good match for the kind of 'fort building' that has been cropping up in indie survival games of late. So far I haven't even been able to mend the broken fences, much less build a wall with a moat full of mirelurks with laser beams strapped to their heads.  

 

I guess the point is to judge  how dilligently you have done the minuitemen missions at some point. Anyone else find it convenient that the minuitemen character is black. 

 

The redcoats famously freed any slave who could escape and join up. No mention of slavery in the game at all so far. The irony would be too poignant ?

If you are going to do american history in Fallout games, and it seems like that's now an integral theme with Bethesda, how about doing more than plucking out random names and faces and reducing them to stereotypes.

Well they've shown that they will always err on the side of 'fun'. Judging from the reviews this seems to be the case again - people complaining that the story, setting and game flow is incoherent to say the least - but damn fun to play.

Not done much in the game so far (spent far to much time trying to figure out face generation). PC is far more defined in game than any other Fallout, which feels odd. Guessing decision is tied to main quest story.

Basic thoughts - combat so far feels like 3. Dialogue wheel suffers from same problem of most dialogue wheels which is not being 100% sure based on wheel text what your response will be. Seems weird to invest in starting pre-war, but allowing the player little ability to interact with it.

I guess it's a good match but I can't envision it being that fun to do, really. Seems like something that's implemented to support the maybe not so engaging core gameplay. 

 

It's Bethesda, that's how they do it. Generic but vast, very vast. I just finished a FO3 run, including DLC, so I don't need to play another Bethesda game for several years. But I just started up a new game for New Vegas..

Impressions so far:

 

Story is typical Bethesda story, so it mainly works as explanation than motivation why player's characters is where they are and why that player finds are there. 

Voice acting is so far best that I have seen in Bethesda's Fallouts or Elder Scrolls games.

Sound track is quite disappointment so far. Classical music radio is Ok, but Crystal city radio is just weak so far, mostly because of cringeworthy speaks with middle of songs that repeat often make it painful to listen (even force than similar radio station in Fallout 3)

It continues Bethesda's tradition of walking simulators, exploration is addictive like it always is in this kind Behesda's games.

Base building is mainly tool that gives player ability to something with all the junk they anyway collect. So far I haven't seen any deepness in it, so far it has been just increasing numbers with no need to think if what you are building actually works.

Role playing has made to be nearly non-existent. In conversations you have mostly option to be sarcastic, yes/no man or ask more information. But in some conversation there are bit more nuanced options. But I would say that even Elder Scrolls' old pick conversation topic system felt more interactive than this.

Character development system is build around SPECIAL attributes and perks. In beginning you get 21 points to put in attributes and then when you get level you get one point that you can but in attributes or perks. Attributes tell mostly how good you are in things and perks unlock special abilities, like pick locking, hacking, crafting. Although perks also give damage, health, carry capacity, find more stuff, etc. bonuses. Perk UI is quite awful. There are some bit more interesting perks like high level charisma perks that give you option to pacify enemies that are lower level than you character.

Game seems to run smoothly enough.

Brotherhood of Steel seems to again be the good guys without nuance

Minutemen don't seem to live for their name

Power armor use has been tied to resource management mini game. But made even more powerful than what it has been in past and it has it own HUD that which is quite nice touch

Fatman is back sadly, and if you die in mysterious explosion it probably because raider shoot you with fatman.

There seems to be also mines that don't appear again if you die on them and come back after the load.

Close combat enemies are made to be annoying jumpers, probably to force player to use close combat weapons against them

Bethesda seems to learn bit from Fallout 3 and Fallout 4's world is not as full of critters and critters don't seem to respawn or their respawn rate is very low.

Textures and animations are Bethesda quality if you compare them to other games (even open world games) out there, but they are better than what they have been in any of their previous open world games.

 

Final verdict: Playable, addictive, poor rpg, hiking simulator, excellent exploration, combat isn't noteworthy.

I found a solution to my stutters and finally had a chance to plough some real time into the game.  I had an enjoyable five hour blast, the world design is great even though I do wonder what kind of post apocalyptic obsessive compulsive went around boarding up all the doors  :disguise:

 

The sheer density of clutter and hidden things borders on bewilderment, it's a feeling I haven't had in a long time.  They've definitely taken a step back from Skyrim's rat run dungeons, multiple routes are back with a vengeance.  

 

The lack of load doors on many buildings is a breath of fresh air, there are basically a ton of mini-dungeons woven into the environment.  My only real world design issue is the unfinished look to wilderness areas, half the time it looks exactly like Skyrim but without the variety, it's really distracting.

 

Gunplay is much improved, they say ID Software helped them and I have no reason to doubt that, it's very meaty.  Enemies are more unpredictable and slightly smarter, I like the way ghouls and mirelurks suddenly start sprinting at you when they get close.

 

Writing seems good enough but it does lack charm, I don't give a single **** about anyone I've met so far.  Which leads me to the conversation system...it sucks, I barely know what I'm about to say and it forces the conversation down stilted paths.  Bioware does this sort of thing better, they should have stuck with the old system, also the loss of speech checks is unforgivable.

 

In general the interface is clumsy, I constantly feel like I need to take my hand off the mouse to get anything done in a speedy manner, if they can't fix it they should allow us to freely switch between pad and mouse controls. especially in build mode.

 

So yeah, for me it's a mix of sucky and great  :wacko:

I agree with almost all of the above. Although I would say that the gunplay reminds me of the Stalker games a little. Not sure why I get that feeling, but I like it.

I'm in agreement.  After my first five hours or so this is what I've got

 

Pros 

- Looks and feels great.  

- Exploration is overwhelming, so much to see.

- Story and writing are great so far.  I am pleasantly surprised.

- Crafting is insane, and building your own little town is crazy addicting.

 

Cons

- Character development is no longer special.

- Interface is not mouse friendly.

- Buggy

 

I think I'd be more upset if I hadn't just played Wasteland 2.  You see, that game let me take a group of characters and develop them all into unique specialists with personalities.  So I scratched that itch.  Fallout 4 seems to be encouraging us all to be jack of all trades, and the background story is too locked in.  You are the good guy.  There isn't much flexibility there.  Both in the narrative and the leveling system, you are playing more of Bethesda's character than something unique.

My guns can one-shot everything in the north-west corner of the map, but straying a bit too far from that even a bloatfly takes five shots to kill.

 

Also, what's up with super mutants' grenade barrage and suicide bombing? Luckily Dogmeat can tank everything.

Full upgraded Dogmeat is best friend that wasteland wanderer can have.

Has anyone figured out how to break down junk to it's base components. I noticed that various junk had what could be harvested from it listed next to it. A special work bench ?. Where ?.

You just need to transfer your junk to a workbench and it will be automatically used. You can only scrap weapons.
