Calmar Posted November 13, 2012 Posted November 13, 2012 (edited) Maybe Forton has wandered the world for many decades, searching wise teachers and worthy opponents, honing his mastery in the noble art of wrecking faces... Edited November 13, 2012 by Calmar 1 Age of Wonders III !!!
Karkarov Posted November 13, 2012 Posted November 13, 2012 Bah, people are people. And it wasn't a joke what if Forton could be one of the Godlike races? (Name of the attachment is Godlike ). When I choose the hue I was thinking more towards "Golem-y" rocky and rasp skin (there is only one race, humanity, brother). I was thinking it was going the full cheese monty and we were seeing Drizzt Do'Forton for the first time. 1
Gibbscape_Torment Posted November 13, 2012 Posted November 13, 2012 I admit, he does look insanely generic.
Agelastos Posted November 13, 2012 Posted November 13, 2012 Maybe Forton has wandered the world for many decades, searching wise teachers and worthy opponents, honing his mastery in the noble art of wrecking faces... And you need kung fu pants and a bare chest to do that? "Wise teachers" like Liechtenauer or Ringeck would probably just laugh him out of their studios if he came to them dressed like that. Sure, he may have studied martial arts in PE's equivalent of Kara-Tur, but that doesn't explain why he's still wearing the clothes. "We have nothing to fear but fear itself! Apart from pain... and maybe humiliation. And obviously death and failure. But apart from fear, pain, humiliation, failure, the unknown and death, we have nothing to fear but fear itself!"
Tsuga C Posted November 13, 2012 Posted November 13, 2012 I mean, who would want to keep such a horribly looking companion? p.s. Oh, and the slippers. David Carradine, perhaps? And those are sandals, not slippers. http://cbrrescue.org/ Go afield with a good attitude, with respect for the wildlife you hunt and for the forests and fields in which you walk. gglorious Posted November 13, 2012 Posted November 13, 2012 I really wish they'd loose the Asian aesthetic of the monk class. I'd rather see some European-style warrior monks, like the ones you'd find in a Military Order during the Crusades. I'm not saying they should fight like Knight Templars or w/e - if I wanted to play a pure crusader I'd just play a fighter or a cleric, but at least make them wear hairshirts and modest tabards, or something like that, instead of wushu kuzi or whatever those baggy kung fu pants are called. They just look so dang out of place. And please, no kamas or qi-powers! This is actually a pretty good Idea ! Imagine a monk who isnt asian stylished. He can still fight with his fists ( which is actually a pretty stupid idea in a world full of weapons and stuff ) wearing a tabard and some european stylished coats. This could be pretty awesome ! Obsidian you should definitely think this over ! Honestly, I think monk could reasonably be combined with other class concepts like weaponmaster. I'd like to see it where the monk class was a more general martial artist, rather than just an unarmed combat specialist. So, think about a lot of manga swordsmen. Many of them don't fit into the traditional warrior class, and often they have more in common with monks. I would like that monk-weaponmaster to be a viable concept, and it would easily be fine to allow for a weaponmaster to have a more European theme while retaining much of the original monk flavor.
SophosTheWise Posted November 13, 2012 Posted November 13, 2012 I admit, he does look insanely generic. To be honest, every character until now looked a bit generic. It's not necessarily a bad thing though, many things about fantasy are kind of generic and I'm quite sure those concept pictures will change a LOT. 2

Depends on the setting, maybe it is super hot outside where he is, and he is practicing by a tree. We have no idea about the setting where he is (maybe in a desert, forest, hut?)? Is he going to be a companion at all but a "V.I.P"? (Don't remember where I read it but something about the Companions maybe not being Companions but Important Characters) Maybe his upper body is so elementally hot that from training that anything he wears on top of his torso just burns up. I've got a pair of those pants, two pair actually. Most comfortable pants ever, jeans weigh so much. He has as little possessions, either by faith (strong believer in mortification) or because he simply moves so much faster. Those pants he is wearing aren't providing any protection at all either. Jymm Posted November 13, 2012 Posted November 13, 2012 Its not just the hair. Its the hair and the eyes. I don't mind the old guy thing. I can live with the stereotypical bare chest and baggy pants. The scars and the tattoo are OK. But the hair is just incredibly dorky. And the eyes look sort of sad and defeated. Its incongruous with the hardened body and the defiant stance. Anyone who has fought long enough to make that age and had their body take that much abuse should have eyes that convey steely resolve and / or otherworldly wisdom. Luckily its just concept art. I've seen enough of the concept art for game characters to know that there are often many changes (some subtle, some dramatic) before the character is fully realized. 2
PK htiw klaw eriF Posted November 13, 2012 Posted November 13, 2012 It is the hair. Yup....which is why I'm not very fussed over whether I think every detail of the concept art is super awesome. I've actually liked most of it so far, in a general kind of way. It's just nice to see some kind of interpretation of character, so early. I'm confident it'll all look fine in the final product. It's better even in that color group concept piece, imo. Just how old is he supposed to be, anyway, I wonder? 50ish? 60ish? “Things are as they are. Hellfell Posted November 13, 2012 Author Posted November 13, 2012 Forton will be the Least popular NPC companion if he looks like this, mark my words. 1 Only boring people get bored
Sacred_Path Posted November 13, 2012 Posted November 13, 2012 David Carradine, perhaps? in that case, he needs a noose 1
Sedrefilos Posted November 13, 2012 Posted November 13, 2012 It's the hair, isn't it? I agree. Here's my rendition of a better Forton (feel free to use this for the final game Obsidian) Yeah, that's much more better. lol

QFT The hair i really dont like because...well, i dont like being reminded of my own eventual faith. And it does look silly. Tie it up in the back and cut some weird symbols on the side and youve got a winner.

limaxophobiacq Posted November 13, 2012 Posted November 13, 2012 (edited) RPG adventurers generally live their lives like murderhobos (http://1d4chan.org/wiki/Murder_hobos), I enjoy that this time we'll have a character who actually looks the part. IMO most adventurers look far too well-adjusted for the kind of life they lead. Edited November 13, 2012 by limaxophobiacq 1

Cryticus Posted November 13, 2012 Posted November 13, 2012 I don't see any problem with that character, he looks awesome, and at least diffrent then generic aragorn type that some people posted here, and really if hairstyle is the problem, really this hairs style is awesome doc had it and he travelde thorugh time.
Azrayel Posted November 13, 2012 Posted November 13, 2012 Jesus, if I had known how EuroCentric Obsidian fans could be... I know this isn't everyone, but I feel like part of this clamor by some people to remove the Asian influences is because a lot of people are just increasingly insecure about anything foreign; if anyone remembers those old threads about which languages to include... yeah. Really, really awful stuff was said there in the most nonchalant, matter-of-fact way. Please, keep this conversation away from devolving into that. I'd like to at least maintain the veneer of sharing hobbies this hobby with non-skinheads. 1 CORSAIR, n. A politician of the seas. ~The Devil's Dictionary
Marceror Posted November 13, 2012 Posted November 13, 2012 I happen to love the way Forton looks. I look at him and feel like he's someone who has suffered a lot in his life. His eyes really seem to tell a story. I wouldn't want Obsidian to change Forton a bit. There's nothing wrong with an older, balding companion for a change of pace. He's already got a place in my first party (assuming he'll be a companion -- I wish Obsidian would confirm which of their revealed "characters" are actually "companions". 1 "Now to find a home for my other staff."My Project Eternity Interview with Adam Brennecke

Gfted1 Posted November 13, 2012 Posted November 13, 2012 Im offended by his bare breasts. He was left shirtless in an obvious attempt at tittilating female players, and dont even get me started on how being shirtless like that will direct all blows to his sternum. I cant believe you guys are alright with him getting a busted sternum. 5 "I'm your biggest fan, Ill follow you until you love me, Papa"

I cant believe you guys are alright with him getting a busted sternum. What can I say, I'm biased and only care about the health of women's sternums. "Hey baby...I want you to have...a healthy sternum" *slap* Okay maybe that isn't working out so well. I cannot - yet I must. How do you calculate that? At what point on the graph do "must" and "cannot" meet? Yet I must - but I cannot! ~ Ro-Man
