Wot I bought last - a fool and their money mystary edition

I never played the Gold Box games when they were new, but every time I've tried them in the decade since, I could never get over the dead feeling of the locations. Y'know, how you're in a starting city or whatever, and it looks just like a dungeon because it's literally just a maze of walls until you interact with a shop door. Obviously the tech isn't there to show actual NPCs milling around in the first-person navigation view, but the games just feel so dead when compared to something like Ultima where the world felt so alive, and where I could spend hours just wandering around town without a single fight.

While I loved the setting, I remember the UI being pretty bad when I played them back in the early '90s. I can't imagine they've aged well at all.

Curiously enough, I managed to avoid breaking a rule I set for myself on a technicality. I said that I'll never ever give Blizzard money again, so I did not. I gave someone else money so they can pre-order D4 for me. Idea inspired by local politics.

As an aside, I have not pre-ordered S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2, not because I have a rule about not pre-ordering, which I do, but because I'm supporting Putin.:shifty:

I would love to play S.T.A.L.K.E.R 2 but it is getting  PC/Xbox Series only release so there goes that. My PC is from 10 years ago and the game won't be getting a PS5 release anytime soon. No buy!

Bought two Stalkers, which I was still missing in my collection, hopefully I will not be disappointed, when I get to play it in 2073 🤷‍♂️

I ended up buying JA3 on GOG. I hope I get some time to start playing this weekend...

Sorely tempted by the early release Xenonauts2, if nothing else because it's 25% off. Just not keen on buying early releases of any game 🤔

That's how I feel about Shadows of Doubt. I played the demo a while back and saw great potential in the game. It's 20% off right now but it's still in EA so I'll hold off for now.

It solved itself for me, because it went off sale. No urgency anymore, I'll wait for the "release" version.

I suspect it's a good thing too, as the first game was one of those addictive just one ore turn before going to bed games 😝

So unless they completely messed up the second game, I expect it's going to be a time killer.

I kickstarted it and I've already played it a bit, but I'm still waiting for the full release to start a serious campaign. They expect to be done with it within the year (a year from now, so 2024), so it's not too far off. I like to support the smaller developers this way, as I know that $30 or whatever goes a long way for them.

Big AAA releases can sit and spin. I'll buy them when they've worked out all the bugs. :p

Star Trek Resurgence. I think that is the name.

You know, that telltale style game in the franchise where they set light sabres to stun and beam people anywhere but where they are supposed to be.

Unobtrusively informing you about my new ebook (which you should feel free to read and shower with praise).

Latest two purchases would be JA3 and BG3 for me (both GOG). Started playing JA3 (and just checked that BG3 actually runs)

Will you continue your purchase pattern with 3er games or will you then proceed to 4s?

For some reason, I've had more luck with the 2's in the past. I.e. Disciples II, Master of Orion 2, Baldurs Gate 2, Icewind Dale 2, Portal 2, Age of Empires 2... the exceptions (from top of my head) being X-Com 3 and HoMM 3 being my favourite of their respective series 😝

I hope JA3 and BG3 follow in the footsteps of the the latter...
