Gromnir
With the shutdown dragging on I've starting looking for a new job. I'm not a direct federal employee but I do contract work for the government. We've already had a few people leave and even some of the feds we work with have left or are openly looking. This puts house hunting on hold until things stabilize one way or the other. am hearing the intel campus in folsom, ca is hiring... only mention as we happen to know o' three, golf course community homes, w/i twenty minutes o' intel, which ain't even on the market yet and may be purchased for a relative song. heck, one such home includes a rare and antique billiards table, sits on .45 acres o' mature landscaped property with large redwoods and backs to fairway o' an arnie palmer designed championship golf course. the property even has steel fencing, so you may be political controversial in these volatile times... something to talk 'bout at ****tail parties. HA! Good Fun! ps the fence isn't designed to keep undesirables out, but rather to keep 'em in. is only four 4.5' high, which is just high enough to deter old border collies from attacking golfers who stray too near the yard. Guard Dog
Woke up to snow on the ground. Just a dusting really. Look like a good day to work from home. I don't do snow! As for border walls/fences my place shares a border with Cold Creek on one side and the Anderson Tully Wildlife Management Area on the other. Back when I first bought this place I cleared a 10' fire break and built a perimeter fence along at border. It's a 5' three rail field wire fence. The idea is of course to keep my critters in but also let hunters from Tully know they have left the MA and are on private property. On several occasions I've had to stop armed hunters crossing my doggone garden. In every case they climbed my damned fence. I've asked them did it ever occur to them the State of Tennessee would not build a fence in the middle of a 40k acre WMA? Unfortunately hunting is not solely the hobby of those with common sense. Guard Dog
Gorgon I can almost guarantee every US Marine that ever served has some level of sewing skill. Though likely not with machines. They are also very familiar with the proper deployment and use of steam irons and magic sizing. And while some of them were certainly gay very, very few were ever sissies. Self sufficiency in any skill is to be commended not derided. 1 "While it is true you learn with age, the down side is what you often learn is what a damn fool you were before" Thomas Sowell
Gorth
It's official (Ok, maybe not, but it sure is anecdotal!)... Australia Post is BADLY in need of privatization I was supposed to get 3 deliveries through the AU Post the last month. First up was an internet modem. Arrived in Ok time, was sent express. However, the only way I knew where to find it was the online tracker. No messages, no card, not even an effin SMS telling me that they couldn't be bothered to deliver to my address, come and pick it up at our local distribution center. Second was a parcel from a hotel in Brisbane (because, being silly me, I forgot a jumper and my passport there before flying back to Melbourne). That one apparently arrived a week ago at the local post office. Again, no hint whatsoever (nor any delivery attempts). Going to walk there today during my lunch break and see if they still got my stuff, even though it's not a full week later. Third... I bought a new mechanical gaming keyboard. $250, not the plastic toys that most people are happy with. Paid extra to have it shipped express too. Would it surprise anyone that it "mysteriously" disappeared en route, tracking showing it arriving in central Melbourne and then no more tracking entries. That was a week and a half ago. What could possibly be the reason for an expensive gaming keyboard getting lost from the tracking system??? Yeah, not a serious question, I have some very unflattering suspicions. “He who joyfully marches to music in rank and file has already earned my contempt. ShadySands
I had an easier time in boot camp because I already knew how to sew thanks to my grandma. LadyCrimson
My mom liked to sew. So I grew up learning all that stuff, dragged to sewing shops, buying patterns, all of that. Sewed my own costumes for Halloween a few years, knew all these little "tricks," would do my own pants hemming, made cat sleeping pillows, the like. I've never owned my own sewing machine however (I mostly hand-sewed things after I moved out of parents) and my life has had little need for sewing so I haven't bothered to maintain. But I can still sew a button, correct poor seams from cheap clothing and mend tears better than my husband. 1 “Things are as they are. LadyCrimson
I'm tired of buying compressed air cans (for initial further-distance bursts) and then squeezing rubber air-bulbs until my hands ache (for closeup/detailed air dusting). Time to try one of these: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00VAYIWSM/ ...it's cheap enough. If its air movement capability sucks, no big loss. Edit: oh, and you know how most people on gaming forums have "game backlogs?" I've never had one of those. But these days I do have "streaming video" backlogs. I must have 100+ things in my Netflix watchlist, 60 in Amazon's, more on other sites. Why do I keep adding when I know I'll never bother watching them...at least it costs me zero to add to them. LadyCrimson
I tried a rotating round head toothbrush (Braun) for the first time. I suppose it cleaned my teeth well enough, but I'm worried it rattled my brain around the skull too much and might give me concussive symptoms. ...ok not really, but holy batman the thing is like brushing your teeth with an industrial-strength vibrating massage unit. It'll either clean your teeth or rattle them loose, take your pick. Maybe I'll get used to it. “Things are as they are. Gromnir
spent the day working on retirement. is something weird 'bout the amount o' work am needing devote to retirement. has been a decades long process, but the actual mechanics o' finalization is soul numbing. could pay an attorney and financial planner to handle all the real work, but am too cheap to do so. am admitted facing a coin-toss decision regarding sale o' two residential properties. keep 'em as rentals avoids us some tax issues and averages us $39k a year assuming 10 month per year occupancy. have had uninterrupted full-year occupancy the last couple years, but such is hardly typical for residential in this area. costs is noteworthy as property taxes and hoa alone on the two properties combined is almost $10k per year. after additional anticipated repairs and misc costs, am looking at relative modest roi. nevertheless, have learned is nice to have at least a little real property in portfolio beyond primary residence. big negative is our knowing residential landlording is resulting in inevitability o' teeth gnashing irritation at some point and irritation runs counter to our retirement goals. got the idaho property and hawaii joint tenancy, but for various reasons, neither is counting towards our retirement plans. general 4% rule o' thumb has us being able to indefinite maintain adjusted-for-inflation 2019 yearly income o' $84k per year living off interest only if am selling properties and $79k if am keeping as rentals. could maybe live in hurl's garage in the bay area with such money, but as long as am living someplace more reasonable, am thinking we could be comfortable with such income. and while is maybe not the most enlightened business decision, am gonna keep the primary residence 'stead o' selling immediate. the border collies is the deciding factor. one o' the border collies is fourteen(ish,) has significant arthritis in hips and is going blind. the other border collie is thirteen, is mostly deaf and is near complete blind, but is still quite active. both is increasingly gassy-- what is that about? as stoopid as it may be, am not gonna sell house and move 'til border collies pass. they got a big yard and still enjoy barking at golfers. don't wanna put the old girls through a move when they only got short time. keeping primary residence also gives us more time to sell the stoopid pool table. everytime we look at the pool table, we feel a bit like max.
