Better Dungeon Design
AGX-17 replied to Hormalakh's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
The idea of merchants "doing business" at the bottom of a forbidden dungeon where adventurers die before reaching the end is silly. You might as well find some local, generally unknown cave and find your way into some unknown chamber and start hauling junk in without telling anyone and just sit there and wait for the cash to roll in. -
Obviously doesn't fit P:E, but fits the thread topic. The "ruins" of an ancient, advanced civilization, as in a "future-tech" type civilization with nanotechnology and self-repairing/maintaining AI systems, so it's a bunch of fantasy primitives walking into a fully functioning sci-fi facility. Maybe some wild revelation that the "magic" your mages have been casting is just a globally-saturated nanomachine system artificially exciting the molecules in creatures' bodies into combustion with fire "magic" or the opposite with ice "magic," in response to what the AI/s interpret as command inputs from system users. How would that change the terrain? Teleporter mazes have been around for decades.

Heroes of Might and Magic III, the last, best entry in the series. As best I can since it barely works with Windows 7 and constantly crashes. -
... Like Sawyer said in regard to his NV mod, New Vegas is over. That ship has sailed. Nobody's working on it anymore, the proverbial lights are off, doors closed, offices cleaned out, etc. Nothing is going to change from the complete/GOTY edition except for modding. You are barking up a tree stump with the mistaken belief that it is a standing tree. Which is all tangential to the fact that you're wrong on all counts simply because the game was written as it was because that was the story and those were the characters Obsidian wanted to convey. They didn't accidentally get their own characters wrong from the Akashic Record versions that exist in the universe that they're simply acting as mediums to express, they created the characters and designed the game as they saw fit. Mr. House clearly states that the NCR would invade the Strip if Caesar's Legion weren't a bigger threat, he clearly states that the Brotherhood of Steel is a threat, their only concern is keeping the flashiest toys out of everyone's hands but their own, and House has got some of the flashiest toys around. The BoS would kill House and then hoard his tech without recognizing the fact that House himself is far more valuable an asset than the tech he's produced, because he designed and produced it. House, again, states with crystal clarity that he had sent Securitrons to the area of the BoS bunker and they were all attacked and destroyed. The BoS has no interest in making contact with house to learn from one of the greatest minds of the pre-war world. Yes Man was designed to be a threat to House. Why would House want the ONE thing that can take his fledgling empire away anywhere near him? Every Securitron is already programmed to follow his will, Yes Man will do whatever anyone tells him. How does that benefit House in any way? And finally, House and the NCR already have a treaty and he explains its terms clearly. Your ideas are just bad. If you don't like House wanting the BoS, a legitimate threat to his position, destroyed, don't side with House. You can't have everything your way. It was House's appraisal of the BoS that turned me against them. The fundamental basis of their beliefs is flawed ("energy weapons destroyed the world, we will prevent that from happening again!" no, they didn't, 20th century technology destroyed the world, what does that have to do with stealing pew pew laser guns from everyone who's not part of your secret club?) Especially note the way he remarks that they don't raid old hospitals for Auto-Docs and advanced medical technology. They're just a tribe of raiders who possess and worship high-tech weapons. They steal those weapons from anyone who's not part of their secret club out of a religious fervor and jealous attempts to maintain their position of "superiority" over the "savages."

A more believable scenario would be that if you robbed a shop/merchant of everything, the merchant would go out of business, close shop, skip town in search of a new start and that building would be repurposed by the town's merchant prince ruler, sold by the merchant for the money needed for a new start or even abandoned.

In-Game Tutorial
AGX-17 replied to molarBear's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
Some games have more complexity than can be relayed with the text "move right and jump over everything that gets in your way." If you can't make a game that teaches players how to play without them noticing they're being taught (or not having fun even if they do realize it,) you shouldn't be designing games in the first place. -
A New Difficulty Idea: Continues
AGX-17 replied to Jojobobo's topic in Pillars of Eternity: Stories (Spoiler Warning!)
Continues aren't a new idea, they're an old one. Originally, they're what you had to pay for (after the initial entry price, of course,) in arcade games, the source of the term "quarter-muncher." Nowadays they're just what you have to never use to get good endings in Touhou games. -
You don't pay enough attention to machines, and too much to underage girls, then. HAHAHA, Char is a pedophile.

TES handles races in the most blatantly racist way possible and is not an example anyone should follow. It's still a mystery to me how nobody seriously calls them out on that **** in this day and age. "Negro-err REDGUARDS are dark skinned people with broad noses that excel at physical activities and athletics but are beneath other races in intellect and wisdom! They are well suited to be athletes and manual laborers but poorly equipped for scholarly, academic pursuits and careers!" Redguards are almost word for word a racist charicature of African Americans. All they did was take the shiftless and criminal aspects of the stereotype and apply it to the beast races, who are just an extension of that negative racial stereotyping. There's nothing enlightened or meaningful about TES' racist undertones. -

GTAIV is why I bought a 360 controller for my PC. It was just unplayable with keyboard + mouse. Hey, designing a structure requires a lot of thought. That or my dad the architect has been lying all my life when he goes back to work for an extra 4 hours after coming home for dinner. -

Unless it's dancing magic, the mage shouldn't be dancing to make magic happen. In which case Michael Jackson would be the archmage. -
There are several ways the game can "punish" the player for not keeping a follower in the party. For example, they can have the follower "follow" their own path of level up progression, rather than the one you choose. They can also avoid having the follower standing around waiting to be picked up again. Finally, they can make sure that the follower can't be stripped of useful gear prior to being released (by having the follower object to being released without their fair share of the loot). Except the game should never be punishing the player for not using a given companion character.

Snowy mountains and deserts are barren, rocky places (unless the desert is dune-y. Even the Sahara has rocky outcroppings, mountains and such, however.)

Magic and the Economy
AGX-17 replied to Tagaziel's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
Actually, the first functional suits of body armor date back to medieval Japan, manufactured from silk. Later examples include Ned Kelly's suit, the Korean Myeonje baegab and then World War II inventions: the German and Soviet breastplates, American flak jackets and so on and so forth. Of course, this depends on the type of firearms used. Which is completely tangential because this refers to the use of any form of armor, not armor meant to stop firearms. None of the things you cited were viable, mass-produced battlefield solutions except Flak Jackets, which were made to protect from shrapnel, not direct gunfire. If you shot a guy wearing a flak jacked he'd be just as shot as a guy wearing a silk nightgown. Same goes for WWI and II helmets. They were for shrapnel/debris protection, not meant to stop bullets. Did you even bother to read what you cited? This sentence does not in any way imply that silk can stop a bullet. It's referring to the concept of soft armor, not armor that can stop a bullet. Silk couldn't stop arrows when the Mongols wore it (who wore it to prevent the arrowhead from catching/tearing soft tissue when being pulled out,) why would it stop bullets? And feudal Japanese armor was multi-layered, including reed or bamboo meshes and lacquer plates forming the first, primary line of defense. It couldn't stop Nobunaga's bullets, either. -
This poll does not conform to either the Holdridge Life Zones or Köppen climate classification systems, and thus, my preferred climatological conditions are not represented. You've even lumped tundra and taiga (aka Boreal forests) together as though they're the same thing! What about Steppes? What about Mediterranean climates? Alpine meadows even! This is an outrage, sir! An outrage!

Exponential Health Gain
AGX-17 replied to Frenetic Pony's topic in Pillars of Eternity: Stories (Spoiler Warning!)
Do you know what exponential growth is? I'm seeing a bit of confusion here, so let's have a math lesson: Let's say level is capped at 20. Then let's say you start with 10 HP and gain 5 upon reaching level 2. If this increases exponentially, you'll gain 10 at lv3, 20 at lv4, 40 at lv5, 80 at lv6, 160 at lv7, 320 at lv8, 640 at lv9, 1280 at lv10, 2560 at lv11, 5120 at lv12, 10,240 at lv13, 20,480 at lv14, 40,960 at lv15, 81,920 at lv16, 163,840 at lv17, 327,680 at lv18, 655,360 at lv19 and 1,310,720 at lv20. So now you've got a grand total of 2,457,605 HP by the time you've hit the level cap of 20. If my maths are not as flawed as I am prone to believe. That is exponential growth. -
Update #31: Enter the Story Zone
AGX-17 replied to Adam Brennecke's topic in Pillars of Eternity: Announcements & News
In mid-January, the "Chris Avellone starts playing Arcanum" date will be pushed back 6 months. 6 months later it will be revealed that the project codenamed "Puerto Rico" had been cancelled 4 months prior. But whatever, how badass would it be if Josh Sawyer bludgeoned an intruder with that mace?- 83 replies
