And it's Allium cepa, not 'onion', guy. Get it right, jeez. What a philistine.

In-Game Tutorial
Some games have more complexity than can be relayed with the text "move right and jump over everything that gets in your way." If you can't make a game that teaches players how to play without them noticing they're being taught (or not having fun even if they do realize it,) you shouldn't be designing games in the first place.

A New Difficulty Idea: Continues
Continues aren't a new idea, they're an old one. Originally, they're what you had to pay for (after the initial entry price, of course,) in arcade games, the source of the term "quarter-muncher." Nowadays they're just what you have to never use to get good endings in Touhou games.

What you did today
You don't pay enough attention to machines, and too much to underage girls, then. HAHAHA, Char is a pedophile.

Critical Hits and Critical Failure...
I don't mind a critical failure so long as my weapon doesn't explode (i've never liked the idea of having to carry surplus/duplicate weapons around for when the one you're currently equipped with breaks,) or end up in the hands of the enemy.

Orcs - discussion
TES handles races in the most blatantly racist way possible and is not an example anyone should follow. It's still a mystery to me how nobody seriously calls them out on that **** in this day and age. "Negro-err REDGUARDS are dark skinned people with broad noses that excel at physical activities and athletics but are beneath other races in intellect and wisdom! They are well suited to be athletes and manual laborers but poorly equipped for scholarly, academic pursuits and careers!" Redguards are almost word for word a racist charicature of African Americans. All they did was take the shiftless and criminal aspects of the stereotype and apply it to the beast races, who are just an extension of that negative racial stereotyping. There's nothing enlightened or meaningful about TES' racist undertones.

What are you playing now - the plays the thing
GTAIV is why I bought a 360 controller for my PC. It was just unplayable with keyboard + mouse. Hey, designing a structure requires a lot of thought. That or my dad the architect has been lying all my life when he goes back to work for an extra 4 hours after coming home for dinner.

Wizard Aestethics/Choreography
Unless it's dancing magic, the mage shouldn't be dancing to make magic happen. In which case Michael Jackson would be the archmage.

Do NPC Companions level up with you even when they aren't in your company?
There are several ways the game can "punish" the player for not keeping a follower in the party. For example, they can have the follower "follow" their own path of level up progression, rather than the one you choose. They can also avoid having the follower standing around waiting to be picked up again. Finally, they can make sure that the follower can't be stripped of useful gear prior to being released (by having the follower object to being released without their fair share of the loot). Except the game should never be punishing the player for not using a given companion character.

Party Members levelled when you get them
Why would they be joining you if they were amateurs? They'd just be sidekicks/hangers-on if they were level 1.

Magic and the Economy
Actually, the first functional suits of body armor date back to medieval Japan, manufactured from silk. Later examples include Ned Kelly's suit, the Korean Myeonje baegab and then World War II inventions: the German and Soviet breastplates, American flak jackets and so on and so forth. Of course, this depends on the type of firearms used. Which is completely tangential because this refers to the use of any form of armor, not armor meant to stop firearms. None of the things you cited were viable, mass-produced battlefield solutions except Flak Jackets, which were made to protect from shrapnel, not direct gunfire. If you shot a guy wearing a flak jacked he'd be just as shot as a guy wearing a silk nightgown. Same goes for WWI and II helmets. They were for shrapnel/debris protection, not meant to stop bullets. Did you even bother to read what you cited? This sentence does not in any way imply that silk can stop a bullet. It's referring to the concept of soft armor, not armor that can stop a bullet. Silk couldn't stop arrows when the Mongols wore it (who wore it to prevent the arrowhead from catching/tearing soft tissue when being pulled out,) why would it stop bullets? And feudal Japanese armor was multi-layered, including reed or bamboo meshes and lacquer plates forming the first, primary line of defense. It couldn't stop Nobunaga's bullets, either.

What is your favorite natural enviroment in games?
This poll does not conform to either the Holdridge Life Zones or Köppen climate classification systems, and thus, my preferred climatological conditions are not represented. You've even lumped tundra and taiga (aka Boreal forests) together as though they're the same thing! What about Steppes? What about Mediterranean climates? Alpine meadows even! This is an outrage, sir! An outrage!

A vicious cycle-The death of gameplay via (cinamatic) experience.
Well, at least you spelled "cinematic" correctly twice in your post. I don't disagree with your sentiment for the most part.

Exponential Health Gain
Do you know what exponential growth is? I'm seeing a bit of confusion here, so let's have a math lesson: Let's say level is capped at 20. Then let's say you start with 10 HP and gain 5 upon reaching level 2. If this increases exponentially, you'll gain 10 at lv3, 20 at lv4, 40 at lv5, 80 at lv6, 160 at lv7, 320 at lv8, 640 at lv9, 1280 at lv10, 2560 at lv11, 5120 at lv12, 10,240 at lv13, 20,480 at lv14, 40,960 at lv15, 81,920 at lv16, 163,840 at lv17, 327,680 at lv18, 655,360 at lv19 and 1,310,720 at lv20. So now you've got a grand total of 2,457,605 HP by the time you've hit the level cap of 20. If my maths are not as flawed as I am prone to believe. That is exponential growth.

Update #31: Enter the Story Zone
In mid-January, the "Chris Avellone starts playing Arcanum" date will be pushed back 6 months. 6 months later it will be revealed that the project codenamed "Puerto Rico" had been cancelled 4 months prior. But whatever, how badass would it be if Josh Sawyer bludgeoned an intruder with that mace?

Anti-Dragon Age 2?
Gamers seem to get obsessed over the strangest characters. 21st century Bioware fans. That is all I have to say.

Books we've been reading V2.0
I can't re-read any book and have fun. The only books I re-read are textbooks, because I have to. Currently reading Fragile Things by Gaiman Himself. Strange order (reverse,) but both good, if a bit tedious at times. I don't understand why concision is such a sin in the world of writing. Diamond often writes as though he's just padding for extra page length. It's especially tough when you're dealing with subjects for which there is a dearth of evidence, and that's something Collapse suffers for.

Movies you've seen recently
La Jette, the french movie that 12 Monkeys was based on. In the comics, Peter Parker was exactly like that - a wiseguy brat, instead of the awkward nerd from the Raimi movies. Looks like you've never read Amazing Fantasy #15 (Spiderman's first appearance/origin story.) Peter Parker was a nerd harried by bullies. It wasn't until he got super powers that he later became a wise-cracking smartass, and only in the guise of Spiderman. Man, it's funny when people who don't know what they're talking about think they know what they're talking about.

What are you playing now - the plays the thing
Would it surprise you to hear me say "nice waifu brother" in a sarcastic way missed by the intended recipient of the comment? It's a pretty good game. Pretty boring selection of races, though. I'm pretty sure 99% of players chose sexually sexual gray elves over blue elves (man those guys were dumb looking,) multiracial generic humans and aryan nordic master race humans. Gameplay was its strongest aspect, the story and lore were uninteresting (thanks Oblivion guy!) Visually it was like a modern WoW (you know, better than DX7,) whether that's good or bad is up to you. Shallow fun, more like a straight action game than an action RPG for the most part.

Of Magic and Muskets...
Ignoring the fact that buckshot already causes bleeding... The idea of guns that fire enchanted bullets (which are the ideal offense against magic users in their own universe, especially cherished by non-mages for leveling the proverbial playing field) has been done: If it was good enough for Joss Whedon, why not?

GTA V
Which was a carbon copy of the Batman Arkham games' gameplay. Not to say it was bad, but when your game's saving grace is ripped off of another game, you might need to rethink your design principles. It's pretty clear that two middle aged white guys and an inner city minority gang member are not going to be kung-fu experts.
