Yojimbo is always worth a watch. If you get a chance to see it on the big screen, Throne of Blood is fantastic in a cinema.

Perused my dusty DVD library and found the 2006 release of Star Wars, Episodes IV-VI. Somehow, I had no memory of them. I checked the back jacket and, diabolically, they include the original theatrical versions. At first I screamed, then cried a little, then trembled in the face of 1977. It didn't even matter how poor the video transfer was, or the 2.0 audio ... the content was real and un-retouched by Lucas. 

 

Had I known this trilogy would be available on Amazon for $325.00 in 2015 ... I might not have gifted a set to my brother ten years ago.  :p

watched Sicario the other day. I was going in expecting a story about a strong female character fighting the good fight, but it turns out the main character is Benicio Del Toro's tragic hero Alejandro. 

 

I'll have to watch it again to make sure, but my first impression is very good. it looks like a great movie (better than Prisoners, dare I say?). just don't let its ratings on IMDB and Metacritic fool you, this movie is a bit more subtle

For sure, probably, although I haven't re-watched the original Episode V yet. Last night in Episode IV, not only does Han shoot first, he's the only one who shoots ... Greedo is straight-up murdered. It's a whole different film, better and more intense than I remember.

Yes. They don't even include the improved special effects so you can still see through the Echo glider's metal frames if you watch them carefully enough. :)

You can get the despecialised editions online. Not only are they in HD widescreen but in their original theatrical versions. Even A New Hope doesn't have the Episode IV at the beginning.

Just finished the first season of The man in the high castle. It was awesome. I didn't expected the season to be already out... only found out about it by accident. Really was under the impression it wouldn't air before early 2016. In any case, it's a really good adaption of the book. Of course things are a bit different here and there, but all in all I think it's awesome.

 

Years have passed since I've read the book, so I am not 100% sure about every detail. The ending is slightly different, most likely for story purpose (to better allow a season 2), but yeah... really liked it. Curious to see how they would setup a second season, because for that they don't have any source material anymore.

Finished up Jessica Jones.  I liked it better than Daredevil, but they are both really well done.  Here is my comparison:

 

Story - JJ beats DD easily here.  It was a compelling plot with a number of interesting characters.  A lot of gray areas too, instead of just good and bad.  After the first episode, I said it was like an alcoholic Veronica Mars with superpowers and less wit, and that held up.   

 

Cast - I liked the supporting cast more in JJ, as well as the lead herself.  Hard to believe that is John Ritter's kid.  The only advantage DD had was the villain, as Kingpin was masterfully portrayed.  Kilgrave was still very good in his role though.  Luke Cage was awesome.

 

I never really followed either comic book lines growing up, so it is fun to watch the stories develop without any of that background knowledge.  They are definitely gabbing my attention more than the CW's line of DC characters.

This is liek the moofie thread and not... well, I'm guessing it's still a TV show. ;)

 

Binge watched it over the weekend. I haven't read the short story/book so I don't really know how good the adaptation is but the show is awesome even if some of the plotlines while ultimately necessary were a little too drawn out (e.g. Juliana's parents, Ed's grandfather and Childan & the Kasuoras, although that might be an awesome name for a band).

 

The casting was a little weird some some of the character design could really use some work. It can't be good when you're sitting in front of your TV wanting Inspector Kido and John Smith to win because dammit they're done (and played) so well while on the other side we got Frank and Juliana who just might be two seperate Skylers.

 

Is it just me but does Rufus Sewell look an awful lot like a fusion between JE and Jean Claude van Damme?  :biggrin:

I watched all of Gran Turino for the first time recently. It seemed pretty good, I guess... I'd seen the last 15-20 minutes of the movie like four times, so seeing the beginning...and middle...did give the finale a bit more weight than the four previous watches, which was nice. Yay for catching up on a movie that I saw commercials for like seven years ago?

Not sure what to think. The visuals were awesome but the story was ridiculously fast paced, even in a 2+ hour movie. I loves me some Mila Kunis but dog boy Tatum made me lol. They sure got their monies worth with the "sky surfing" FX.

The Martian. How the mighty have fallen. Ridley Scott should stop making films.

 

In a way this is even more embarassing than Prometheus, which while a spectacularly bad film, still had some traces of Scott's former talent. The Martian is so mediocre, such an oatmeal of a film in every respect that had I not known he was directing it would have thought it the work of some no name Holllywood director.

 

Hipster Matt Damon goes Robinson Crusoe on Mars. Except Crusoe had a harder time making Earth work for him than Matt Damon did making Earth from Mars.

Absolutely Anything.

 

It's.. a bit of an odd beast of a film actually. It's not bad, it has some amusing moments. Simon Pegg as the teacher who gets handed absolute reality altering power by a group of aliens deciding the fate of the Earth. Said council being voiced by the surviving Monty Python cast. I think the main issue is the cast - you have a some very good people, with hardly anything to do. Kate Beckinsale as the girl next door, Eddie Izzard as the dictatorial Head Teacher, even Robin Williams doing the voice of the dog (once it gets given speech). With that sort of backing you expect a whole lot more because of them and it just fails to reach a level it should. So the rather average nature of it all seems to make it seem worse than it actually is.
