What are you playing now?

Played a fantastic mission in Xcom where a whaling ship was infested with Chryssalids, and they kept pouring out of the whale carcass.  It was really well set up.  The great thing was I had to have one soldier run up to the control room, and I covered her with snipers on the docks while she moved.  It was intense.

Yeah, Zom-B-Gone has been the best mission so far. Lost 4 soldiers from my best squad.

I lost one assault specialist that was not that highly ranked, but my snipers were able to hang far enough back to cover the retreat for everyone else, and they were simply deadly.

It did remind me a bit of Terror From the Deep.

They even threw in a reference to the cruise ships that nobody liked   :p

Whale is great but unfortunately a bit of a one-time deal in terms of tension. Once you know how it works, it's fairly easy to game. Not even talking the extreme level of taking one flying unit and doing it solo (the aliens won't be able to do anything but stare longingly at you), but just in getting at close as you can to the trigger point without actually setting it off. A Jetboot mech or a jumping genemodded trooper won't trigger it until you're at the upper deck. And I assume mimetic skin will break it just like it breaks the game in general.

The operation Progeny missions fail where that succeeded. The first mission just encourages people to learn every single spawn point and camp it, turning it from an unfairly balanced bloodbath to a methodical farming expedition.

I finished Night of the Rabbit. I was afraid it was going to turn into Whispered World for a moment there, but they did well in the end.

Raptor Call of the Shadows, is not a good port apparently but is still fun to play. Remember wanting this game badly but couldn't afford it so I just played the shareware version over and over.

Starting Chaos on Deponia as well, the intro bit where Rufus sets fire to everything as they remind you over and over and over that he's a klutz as well as his humming some tune already has it on a bad path.

The much anticipated XCOM base defense. To be honest, I was getting pretty bored of the game just then, as the phase of the game where you're endlessly breaching large UFO after large UFO, including, most frequently, my most hated map in the game, the supply barge. So something different was cool. Throwing the rest in spoilers, but obviously pretty mild stuff anyway.

So yeah, base defense. Maybe I left it too long because it happened the month Sectopods begin to appear. 37 aliens versus four colonels and four sub-rookie base personnel (seriously, they're rookies with one less hp), geez, that's three times the usual enemy numbers versus about two-thirds the strength of my normal squad. Also featured the first ethereal and first muton elites of the campaign. Every non-plot alien bar, oddly enough thinmen, appeared.

Came at a bad time because normally I'd have my sniper (injured) and something better than light plasma for the assaults (alloy cannon research finished two bloody days after the mission). And the wrong mech - I have a sniper-turned mech who would have been infinitely more useful than trying to punch when trying to hold the line. Certainly metagaming some more (the only thing I knew was to not unequip my high-rank soldiers) would make it a fair bit easier. That said, I still don't know how reinforcements work, because I only got the one set of them on the first turn and nothing thereafter.

That said though, won with no casualties, even all the 4hp base personnel survived, in glorious fashion (seriously, they racked up several kills because my regulars tended to leave a lot of low hp aliens).

All in all, it was nice to have, but I also find myself agreeing with the design of it only happening once per playthrough. Any more would be rather painful.

Right now though, number one on my wishlist is just a stripped down, almost skirmish mode where you just do mission after mission on the standard abduction maps. Never mind UFOs, never mind plot, screw Exalt and DLC missions, and screw economy and panic micromanagement. Just give me the core of the game without any of the window dressing.

So I've just finished Walking Dead and it was very good. A gripping ending.

So now I've recently played an old-school RPG, IWD, and the emotional Walking Dead. I now want to play something where I don't have to think too much and I can just kill things, so what you guys think...Dead Space 3 or Metro : Last Light?

Picked up Dark Souls, and also formed Russia in EU4 Hardcore. Westernized too, though as a result I'm a bit behind on tech but starting to catch up as my economy is in full swing. I'll need it because my fight against Burgundy had him smacking me around pretty handily. Need to up my tactics and quality, I think.

Still playing Dragon's Dogma.  I think I chose the wrong class to start as.  My fighter looks so sub par compared to my companions who are a Strider and a Mage.  Especially when it comes to attacks from enemies in the air.  I'm flailing away trying to knock them down like a piñata, while they're shooting arrows or fireballs at them and hitting with ease.  Heck, we took down a hydra with me doing literally nothing other than the killing blow when the head was already on the ground.

You should have climbed on its neck and whacked it with your sword.

I tried to do that.  But my guy ran out of stamina while trying to climb to the head.  So he'd leap onto the neck, shimmy a bit toward the head, then drop down huffing and puffing.

Apparently my character is also morbidly obese.

That's strange. I climbed its neck with my mage. I had enough of being only a mage, so I decided to just go berserk on it. I'm now a mystic knight (although I haven't played for several days now).

Remember encumbrance increases the use of stamina when climbing.  If you want to be an all-climby fighter / warrior type you need to keep your gear & supplies light particularly at lower levels when you have less stamina to spare.  IIRC Striders use the least stamina when climbing of the three basic types but fighters have a higher encumbrance rate.

Fighters usually need to use the shield bash on flying enemies (encourages them to attack the player).  Warriors have an upthrust and a good jumping slash for low level flying enemies (but yeah, Striders and Mages have the upper hand there, but many big monsters will one-hit a low level mage but not a fighter).

RE: Pip - the game encourages jumping around, climbing and trying to find ways to get to the seemingly inaccessible.

I picked up Dark Souls when it came out.

Sold it back 4 days later.  Sorry, but the game was just not for me.

Feel free to de-friend me. :)

Hrm. Friends with Tale... not driven insane by the torture that is Dark Souls...

I think I'm good on that choice. Too frustrating for me. :)

I beat the game when it originally came out. I'm playing the Dark Arisen re-release now with a new character.

It's slow going since I've done all this before and am not ready to hit up Bitterblack Isle yet.

When you start as a new character, do you lose the character creation extras (eye color, skin color, hair color etc) you've bought previously or the main menu character editor?  I've been tempted to start over from scratch but don't really want to lose the character creation options (anyhow not restarting entirely until I've finally taken death out).
