I would have taken off if I could. Going in sick is good for nobody, really. I *hate* going in sick and would only do it if there was no other alternative.

I cannot - yet I must. How do you calculate that? At what point on the graph do "must" and "cannot" meet? Yet I must - but I cannot! ~ Ro-Man

Benefits of WFH.  Well, if your workplace's culture doesn't have an issue with it.  Never understood why it is, face to face interactions are overrated.

Watched a video of a slav war refugee complain about middle eastern war refugees. Kind of funny though, hearing him say the exact same thing racists were saying about slavs when I grew up. I shouldn't have watched it though, got a bad headache now...

Don't know what the **** youtube has been smoking, but lately my recommendations has been ****.

Civilization, in fact, grows more and more maudlin and hysterical; especially under democracy it tends to degenerate into a mere combat of crazes; the whole aim of practical politics is to keep the populace alarmed (and hence clamorous to be led to safety) by menacing it with an endless series of hobgoblins, most of them imaginary. - H.L. Thankfully I'm no longer getting videos about random guys whining about how Star Wars/Marvel/Witcher/Star Trek/Terminator have been ruined by $Evil_Group.

Now I just get a lot of gun videos - must be all the Forgotten Weapons videos I've watched recently.  Good channel by the way.

Back in the 80's, local stores and delis would have those chopped and formed, long super thin jerky strips (or sometimes silver dollar shapes). Some of them had good flavor (fatty, spices) even as the texture and "formed" made you think of dog treats. I lived on those during the coast to coast drive with my sister as well as many long drives with hubby. In terms of common store packaging, Lowrey's wrapped jerky in a can (no longer made I think) was the most akin to those  but the ones I'm talking about were bigger and better and less sweet/moist. Some of them would even have the plastic loop punched-in ingredient/price tag on each piece, when bought from the large jars on the counters. Anyone else remember those?

Nostalgia makes me want some of that stuff. Can't find any online (or places like 7-11). Don't know what search terms to use (chopped and formed didn't work). Everything is gourmet/artisan or "real slices of meat" now. Which is not a bad thing, mind. Except when you want a taste of your youth.

Not even sure how I found that channel in first place but it's informative.  Just have to remember to not watch it at work 😀

Comments on his videos are generally good too, well unless it involves Rhodesia...

can you believe that this movie quality animation was used for just an ad for a chinese F2P2W mobile-online game? this kind of 2D animation is quite expensive so i guess they expect to make a killing from the game

The words freedom and liberty, are diminishing the true meaning of the abstract concept they try to explain. The true nature of freedom is such, that the human mind is unable to comprehend it, so we make a cage and name it freedom in order to give a tangible meaning to what we dont understand, just as our ancestors made gods like Thor or Zeus to explain thunder.

Fell asleep early, woke up at 2am to the sound of creatures hopping the fence and growling around the window (racoons I assume). Shuffled to pc-room.  Listening to Xmas-y tunes and (fruitlessly) browsing Steam.

California winter has arrived with the first big rain/wind/thunderstorm + some light hail yesterday afternoon. Made for a nice time listening to it all pounding on the roof. One of those houses where heavy rain can sound like someone is tossing 2 tons of softened beans at your rooftop. It's glorious.

Reminds me of when I had an absolute bloodbath on my back patio when I lived in (coincidentally) California. Coyotes had climbed up our hill chasing something, probably rabbits seeing as there were a lot around that frequently visited, and just started destroying everything and physically attacking the house in the middle of the night. They repeatedly charged (and struck with their entire bodies) the back glass sliding door I had that went to the living room (it was a weird house - California...), but weren't able to get through luckily. Left carnage everywhere - looked like somebody had been murdered on my patio. I'll take the raccoons, thanks.

How I have existed fills me with horror. For I have failed in everything - spelling, arithmetic, riding, tennis, golf; dancing, singing, acting; wife, mistress, whore, friend. Even cooking. And I do not excuse myself with the usual escape of 'not trying'. I tried with all my heart.

In my dreams, I am not crippled. In my dreams, I dance.

I have good friends of mine from JHB coming to Cape Town for about 10 days and they staying with me this weekend which Im really excited about

I have several things planned and will also see what they feel like but definitely tomorrow morning Im taking them to an artisan farmers market. My friend and his wife enjoy drinking and eating  out so I expect much  revelry and boisterousness awaits us 🍻

Made the final arrangements for my birthday wine tasting. A new yearly event where I invite my closest friends, and we have a (relatively) formal blindtasting of wines from my cellar. 4 whites, 4 reds and two dessert wines are good to go - the oldest from 1966.

Today I ordered some new toys, new beds, dental chews, and pig ears for the dogs for Christmas. I ordered a wine, cheese, and other stuff gift basket for my brother and his wife. I bought a $120 gift card from the Microsoft/X-Box store for my Nephew. A $120 gift card to Macy's for my niece. I ordered a cookie platter for my Vet's office, mailed cards to my colleagues  from work and their families plus a few other folks I feel compelled to keep in touch with for one reason or another. Sent checks to the four charities I support and ordered some toys on Amazon for Toys for Tots. I can check all things Christmas off my to-do list! I am Ho Ho Hoed out.

The chickens will get a present too: cottage cheese. They go freaking nuts for that. Now they freak out when they see me carrying anything that looks like it might be a cottage cheese tub. Including a coffee cup.

My order of a 190 individual piece jar of Bit O' Honey's came this morning. So I've had a handful in my robe pocket all afternoon, occasionally eating one. Finally some childhood nostalgia satisfied (it's rare to find the candy at local stores here, anymore). My mouth is happy.

Strange day, had a recruiter contact me about moving to a different company even though I'm not looking to leave. Pay is slightly higher and benefits are a little better but I wouldn't have the schedule flexibility that I have now. Glassdoor reviews are middling so I'm not sure that I want to go through with it but they want to move quickly. 🤔

Whichever way you go it's more than a little cool there is such a demand for your services. Kudos to you sir!

for a couple o' years we were nominal in charge o' personnel decisions at a firm. the thing which made our job easier is current employees were often satisfied to take what they were given-- little need to negotiate to keep good employees.

likely unnecessary recommendation: decide what you want and then ask for it. the different company made you an offer, but it don't stop you from making a counter proposal. worst that happens is they say, "no." decide what it would take to get you to move, then ask for it. get current employer involved as well. give'em a chance to meet or beat offer.

am guessing shady knows such stuff and Gromnir advice sounds patronizing, but we were always shocked by how willing those we employed were to just take what were put in front o' them. didn't wanna bother with hassle or risk friction with current employer or whatever other reasons came to mind. for a good employee in demand, focus shouldn't be what is offered, but rather what you want. doesn't hurt to ask for what you want.

HA! Good Fun!
