How would people like to fix the animal companion so it would be useful but not unbalanced? Give it a hit-and-run attack when partnered with the Ranger?

I really enjoyed Gold Box Games back in the day for their tactical, turn-based combat with a party of generated character. However, so far all I've seen is the "Gold Box" being used for name-dropping purposes. I need to learn more about what they have in mind in terms of actual game play and a story line, before I jump on board.

It's more than close enough to be quite satisfactory for 99% of the audience, I think. I've seen minor graphical errors in virtually every game I've played, but it wasn't ever the graphics that ruins the experience.

I suppose that would be the Mechanics skill, mixed in with a little Lore?

There's a number of aspects to modding, so it depends on what you want to learn first. It's not one big master course you can take: you need to know what games you want to mod and what type of modding you want to perform. Modelling, texturing, area mesh building, coding/scripting, animation, sound systems, visual effects, graphical art, ...

Yeah, I don't really care about the book or the vorpal wabbit thing. It's just the tactics that seem distasteful. Such as the change of the kickstarter goals that (a) put the necropolis out of reach and (b) replaced it with a book that most contributors won't even get. Instead I get the privilege of being a "beta tester". Nah.

The overland map encounter system in SoZ was an enjoyable element of the game. If you had a half-way decent Survival skill, you could see many of the nearby random encounters on the map, and thus choose to travel so as to avoid them. It felt more plausible than just experiencing completely random encounters.

Apparently some of the stretch goals they have been setting will only be available to higher end contributors. Hmm... Now I'm wishing I'd contributed less.

Making enchanted items common for adventurers is not the same thing as making enchanted items common. Adventurers go where few others would dare to tread; there they encounter deadly foes that like to accumulate power, and, in a fantasy setting, acquiring enchanted baubles is a definitive means to increases one's potency. Hence adventurers that survive the experience are more likely to find enchanted items.

Not having random encounters during travel would seem to put a dampener on the usefulness of the Survival skill.

Yes, do mature Dragons have soul-based powers and are they subject to reincarnation? I'm also wondering what they do with their heightened intelligence. Perhaps they meddle in the affairs of others? It looks great. Thanks for the lore as well.

If PoE becomes a successful game in the market, that's more of a reason to use Kickstarter than not to. A successful Kickstarter campaign should reduce the financial risk of developing a game because most of the funds will be available at the start, without strings attached. In addition, the independent nature of the funding eliminates the potentially undesirable influence of a large publisher, while putting the developer into closer contact with the end customer.

The person writing the article makes the comparison to the Death Star which is nonsense as lasers are light and wouldn't behave as a solid in those conditions. The better analogy would be on how they use it for medicine by having multiple lasers intersect on a given point to burn something malignant. I wonder how well a reflective tinfoil countermeasure would work?

That could just be an effect of the perspective method used. They had to use the same perspective for all viewing locations, whereas a 3D game can show the localized perspective. The result is a subtle difference in viewing angles.

I saw some news today that leaves me happy: Twentieth Century Fox has picked up the film rights to Heinlein's The Moon is a Harsh Mistress. I hope they actually film it this time, and do the book justice.

BTW, why is having "too much money" a problem? What issue are you trying to solve by draining a player of funds?

The GTX 970 alone is over $300 on NewEgg. This Steam Machine could be pricey.

F:NV included money sinks like implants that were fairly expensive, but could be used to up your entire capability. These had the advantage that they supplemented whatever other gear you had acquired. Potentially something like this could be added that employs some type of soul-based 'technology' to enhance your core being. At higher levels, such enhancements could be made necessary in order to tackle the most powerful beings.

I went ahead and backed it, but with the expectation that the project may (~40%) flounder. I think I understand the risks, and I accept that my money may be lost. Just hoping for the best at the moment.
