What race will you play as?

Saw the first episode of The 100 last night. An interesting premise, and different from what I was expecting. The flavor is a little bit of 'convicts deported to Australia' meets Lord of the Flies. It may be good, or it could be terrible.

I'm predicting it's going to tank.

The low maintenance versions will sometimes even give you a present. In your bed. While you're asleep. Like a mouse. A live one.

Too combat-focused?
rjshae replied to Ieldra's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
We have discussed before what it is about classes in particular that makes for interesting non-combat elements, and I think the general consensus was: not much. There are a few things like conversation, stealth and survival where some classes may excel in a D&D-based game, but those are factors are now generally skill based. -
I wasn't too concerned about pre-buffing when playing a fighter-mage; for me it was more about combat flexibility--switching from fighter versus grunts to battle mage against a magic-heavy enemy party. They're like a special forces character, if you will, rather than being the heavy infantry. I usually put it on the flanks or, in narrow quarters, had it in reserve using missile weapons.

Looking at it, I got the sense that this is not an ordinary fireplace. That's not how wood normally burns.

A nice update all the way around. I quite enjoyed the artwork and the class details. Thank you. Hopefully those portraits will be available for use with Adventurer Hall characters. What I wonder about is the role spell scrolls will play in this, if any. Will those be available as loot items for spell-casting classes and will they still function as one-shot spells that can supplement your grimoire or spell repertoire?

Pointy Hats
rjshae replied to khalil's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
No, pointy hats are not indicative of a specific culture. Here, allow me to go into the history of the pointy hat.First, we have the association with wizards. The pointy hat's association with wizards originated in Norse Mythology, via Odin's guise as the wanderer, in which he wore a wide brimmed hat that hid his missing eye. He also wore a blue robe, and leaned on a staff. Odin was the norse god of magic (among other things), so the connection to wizards should be fairly obvious. Later on, European woodcuts would portray wizards, dwarfs, and witches as having pointy hats, thus leading to the modern association. Thus, while it does fall into modern culture's portrayal of wizards, it also falls into that of the norsemen, as well as 17th century fairy tales. As far as the hat itself, conical hats appear in a number of cultures due to the ease of manufacture. It's like saying pants are associated with a particular culture. You just made my point--according to you, 'pointy' hats with floppy rims are associated with a specific European culture, which was then borrowed by some other northern European cultures. They were not universal, at least not in that form. If you look at those woodcuts, you'll also find other forms of pointy hats for wizards, including so-called 'dunce' caps. They had very distinctive cultural influences. Hat styles are often culturally iconic.- 46 replies

Pointy Hats
rjshae replied to khalil's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
Well then there's my point: 'pointy' hats are very suggestive of a specific culture. This is a different world with different cultures and history; introducing something that clearly doesn't fit the theme may break the forth plane--much as would a lab coat in an ancient roman setting, for example. If they do introduce pointy hats, then I would hope they don't look like they came from the Wizard of Oz. So no, I hope they don't have pointy hats with floppy rims like the pictures presented earlier, unless they fit the theme.- 46 replies

An option to have a Battle Report pop up at the end of each combat. It could show, for example: The location of the battle. Combat duration (in terms of game time). Total number of enemies defeated. The highest damage total inflicted by a party member, and by whom. The single attack with the highest damage total inflicted. The single magic spell cast that inflicted the highest damage total. The most powerful enemy defeated during the combat. Total damage inflicted upon the party. The party member who took the most damage. Number of pauses incurred. Number of expendable items consumed. Number of loot items dropped by the enemy. Number of times the dwarf scratched his butt during combat. Okay, just kidding on the last one. But you get the idea.

PoE Racial Archetypes
rjshae posted a topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
I'm curious to find out what the developer's take is going to be with the various races. I know they have some geographical-based categories they have listed before, as well as some regional cultures, but what about the racially-specific cultures and behavioral norms? Will they be using stock archetypes for elves and dwarves, or implementing something a little different? Will elves be tree-hugging, poetry spouting, effeminate artsy-fartsy types? Are the dwarves going to be beer belching, beard toting, grumpy gold hoarders? What do you think? -
No True Turn-Based?
rjshae replied to Christopholis's topic in Pillars of Eternity: Stories (Spoiler Warning!)
It sounds like combat will be continual action rather than turns made at regular intervals, so it is unclear to me where they would insert a pause. Perhaps at the end of specific actions? Maybe you can queue up actions and insert a 'pause' action at the end? -

Pointy Hats

They could do a pointy hat by changing the very stereotypical wide brim to a different style. For example:- 46 replies

Pointy Hats
rjshae replied to khalil's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
Since Wizards probably draw gunfire, they may not want to be too obvious about their profession prior to hostilities. Then again an egotistical wizard probably likes a lot of flair, so maybe those would have unusual hat styles?- 46 replies

It hardly matters whether you let them or not, but I agree otherwise. They've already made a commitment to allow modding, so the point seems moot.
