About playing as a psychopath
draego replied to Hariwulf's topic in Pillars of Eternity: Stories (Spoiler Warning!)
There are no unkillable npcs (i think) but i know of one that will end the game right there. Also i think they planned for user killing everyone so i would think the leveling would be fine. -
You may like POE2. There is a subclass that kills off your pet and the pet becomes a ghost summon. I wont be using that one but it lets you update your ranger without pet talents. I hope they have a subclass that doubles down on pets and or melee rangers but to each his own.
-
I generally play rangers and i disagree completely. If the pet gets abilities on level up they would be op. If you are playing a ranged ranger i dont get what is gimped you get 8 general (and 8 abilities) talents to pick from for the game i usually only pick 3 pet talents for a ranged ranger so that leave you 5 talents for your bows or guns that is plenty. If you are playing melee ranger then you may have to pick more ranger general talents but only maybe one more if you really want. In general though this is the trade off for having another character your ranger cant be like a rogue plus a pet that would be crazy.

chanter are beast. they can solo the game well others can to but they are not weak. You may not find them fun some did some didnt but they are not weak. No you dont need certain attributes. this is a roleplaying game you dont get to pass every check yourself. there are checks for every attribute so you cant possibly have them all high (unless you meta game i suppose but thats not the point) you find a role for your character and play it out. That is the definition of choice you can have x attribute high or y attribute high so choose one. I hope they stress this more in the next game and i think they will with all the new skills they are adding. Its good you dont get to unlock every piece of content in a roleplaying game. It means there are actual choices to be made on how you build your character. That wizards are clearly better as melee is not true either. I have had dps leading wizards with wands or scepters. And they are monsters at cc. I am sorry your experience was off but balance wasn't one of the issues of pillars in fact there are whole threads devoted to hating on josh for too much balance which I don't agree with fyi.

Deadfire stealth.
draego replied to Phenomenum's topic in Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
PoE1 already has limited party break up, sort of. I mean, you can't leave the area, but you can move a single, stealthy character around independently of the rest of the group. I distinctly remember this being useful in one of the Doemenel quests. I'm very impressed with the new info about the stealth system. Obsidian delivered something I wasn't really expecting. Really looking forward to cloak-and-dagger characters now. Yes stealing the heart of the white march and also a quest in twin elms to break someone out of jail but you couldn't leave any area including a going into a house or any area the required loading. This would add just a little more flexibility for stealthy characters. I'm not saying they should be allowed to go across the maps but house and rooms you should be able to go without your companions. -

Really? That wasn't my experience; my rogue PC kicked butt. Maybe they've been "rebalanced" since then? Yes. Rangers can out DPS them with the benefit of range while Ciphers have several powers that give them the edge. That's not to say the PoE rogue is at the level of the BG Beastmaster or single class thief, but compared to other classes it definitely falls behind. Comparitively Chanters are bad because by the time they can pull out an invocation the fight is mostly over, unless it's a boss or PotD. If you talking about damage then chanters are one of the best in the game. Not sure what you are trying to compare here. Check out Boeroer's Drake's Ambassador -
Any way to skip the fortress?
draego replied to One2Many's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
i dont think you have to do anything with the stronghold once you finish the first part to leave. I believe the bandit really only hurt as you rise in Prestige. You will just miss out on stronghold quest but its not needed to win or anything. I believe you only get visitors also as your prestige rise but i am not sure about that one. i think if you leave the stronghold alone not much will happen. -
Deadfire stealth.
draego replied to Phenomenum's topic in Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
I assume this is from one of the Q&A stream? I'm pleasantly surprised by their decision to go full-on stealth gameplay. Hopefully they take notes from other stealth tactics games like the Shadow Tactics: Blades of the Shogun. I have to wonder how essential stealth is now, though. If I'm going to play stealthily, how screwed is my party if some characters only have a couple of levels of stealth, like a traditional RPG team? Moreover, if another player decides to completely ignore stealth, how much stuff are they going to miss? I assume there are going to be lots of opportunities to also use stealth mechanics, otherwise why make them so in-depth. Do people without stealth miss out on a lot of content or is stealth actually, fully just a choice among the many? Can, for example, a good talker also surreptiosly (reverse-)pickpocket people by distracting or conning them? This is why i hope at least for local rooms you can sneak into them with only your stealthy character. So allow limited party break up. -
I think its because once the battle starts there is a trade-off with other spells. If you force buffs to be fight only you then have to choose whether you will throw out a damage spells first or buff first or another cc spell since some cc spells are pre battle. I like that buffs are part of the opportunity cost calculation. To me it feels more tactical to do it that way. I'm am not saying its perfect but i enjoyed it.

What I feel is the limiting factor here is: NO CASTING OUTSIDE OF COMBAT. I understand that this was done so that players wouldn't be able to cast hundreds of buff spells before every fight. This apparently saves time and allows balancing without having to take all that buffing into account. But if spells are only castable in combat, that means that all spells = combat spells. That makes me sad too. It is a little wierd in a magical world but from a gameplay perspective it was way more enjoyable to not have to buff all the time before fights. -
Deadfire stealth.
draego replied to Phenomenum's topic in Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
New stealth info. Npcs will have vision cone, hearing radius and patrol patterns. This will allow more stealthy mission content with more use for stealth. Josh said where npc is looking will be important for detection and also sound. -
I agree wizards are already powerful in POE we don't need IE level powerful

I think its interesting and what i am about to say should not be taken as me saying that every quest should be doable by every player but... I dont like the idea of quest lines specifically for a single class especially if you dont have a wizard in your party. I have made a run in POE1 without a wizard and also tried a dual wield wizard (the only way i would even think of rolling a wizard). This seems pretty arbitrary to just to include a single class in quest line. Duels could be interesting quest line overall. I mean i have seen it in other games. Also i think there are several spell casting classes in the game that would make duels fun and i dont like the idea that wizards are special or more powerful than the other classes. This mainly comes from my hate of ever rolling a wizard and only begrudgingly take wizards for their utility usually, so take this comment with a grain of salt.

Ye you just dont want character to be able to stack dodging to 100% through talents and gear. As long as it doesn't go that far then it would be interesting and would make single weapon builds even more interesting. I would not want it to apply to shielded builds or two handers. At least if it could be gimped for those types greatly if not all the way. I remember in morrowind and oblivion you could create chameleon suit and nothing could see you it was ridiculous. As long as you dont make that possible then it adds interesting builds

I would like character portrait in the window for who is talking to me. I know they wont make that many portraits but when i was playing through i had hoped that putting portraits i didnt use into the npc portrait folder (and renaming them to characters you meet in the game) would make the portrait pop up when talking with me but it didnt the npc portraits only work for certain characters. Its seem that that could be done with the portraits you dont use. So just dynamically assign unused portraits to characters of descending importance in the game. Seems like a waste of portraits not to use them.

My first play through for sure was i for sure was trying to find everything and go everywhere. i have made subsequent playthoughs where my role was more defined and i didn't do certain things but still find myself doing 85% of content. So i didnt start from a place of completionist and more from theme and went from there. Simple example i played a berath priest who was kinda judge dredd, who would try to follow the law in that area and when i went to ethos temple and was told that raedric didnt want people in the temple i left it alone and didnt do it. Also i have played a wizard scientist who was looking for new science to stop death because he watch his family member die and couldn't help with his knowledge. So when i found out about Aufra's quest for the potion well i did it all the way until i got the potion and didnt give it to her (i mean i didn't even go back to her) because i was roling that i stole the potion to study it for myself and the only reason i even went on the quest is because my character was interesting in getting the potion and not really helping. This should have been an option fyi and maybe it should have given you a new potion. But i found when i did stuff like that even though i wasn't completing all quest possible it made my run feel more consistent.

I think this gets to other stuff besides just enchanting, like player preference and the like. Making a build entirely based around a single piece weapon sounds like the old spiked chain fighters of DnD, i.e. cheesy and something to be discouraged (not trying to insult anyone). But that's just my opinion, and I know other people like doing stuff like that. It just seems like setting yourself up to have a bad time. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Its not always about single weapon builds. usually when i build a character i like to stick with one or two types of weapons. So i ran a polleaxe, warbow melee ranger. if you look at the weapon progression for pollaxes: Pollaxe Fine Pollaxe Spectacular Spectum - Fine Marking Exceptional Pollaxe The Wind's Arm - Exceptional Zephyr\Cleansing Wind Superb Pollaxe Half Mast - Superb Crit to Prone Traitors' Merit - Exceptional Vicious\Predetory First i am assuming i have no foreknowledge of this data. This is basically the order you find these Pollaxes. So for synergy with my melee ranger Spectacular Spectum turns out to be the better than all other pollaxes (but i dont neccessary know that ahead of time) because my conception for my melee ranger is to make my pet the damager. then maybe Traitor' Merit, which i would be fine moving to but you dont find that until the burial Isle literally right before the last dungeon so its near pointless but still can be useful for may 5 out of the 100 hours i played. This is not because i am trying to build around one weapon. I would be fine changing pollaxes if the other options were better or funner for my build. In the new system i dont get a choice. even though i have maybe used proficiency in pollaxe but Spectacular Spectum will become hard to use later in the game and i would be force to move up even though my ranger doesnt benefit from crit to prone much because i have stunning shots or from the The Wind's Arm passive to hurt enemy concentration since i am not an interrupt build and i dont want to be casting stuff. This is a great example of the issue, because the devs decided to drop Spectacular Spectum early to mid game my build becomes less optimal at least to me. In the new system i would always move up because later on superb will be allowed to go to legendary and the difference between exceptional and legendary is +7 accuracy and 25% damage which could make a difference in tougher fights. even though the property i find best for my build is marking. And i dont want to change my weapon to a greatsword or estoc, i mean why should i have too. I get that maybe in some situations i would be ok to switch weapons for a battle here or there but i still will want a dominate weapon type to use. I dont want to play waka-mole weapons. I have a conception for a build and want to stick with it being a pollaxe ranger. Its not always perfect but this is a role playing game. This would still apply if i say played with two weapon types instead of one. This situation could still happen because its arbitrary which weapons work best for my build and as long as its true that the properties that end up the best for me drop early my build is screwed. All i am saying is that in this situation i would like the option to say no i want to keep the marking property weapon up to date in case new weapon properties dont match my build. Its not a guarantee that later weapons will be 'better' in any way the new property could be better for some and not others its a crapshoot. Its seem like there is an assumption that later weapons are better just because, but the properties in POE are varied quite a bit in unusually and good ways and you shouldn't be punished because a dev happened to drop the properties you value early in the game instead of late. There is no such thing as moving up in weapon properties in POE there are just different properties. The answer to this issue also isn't well just double the unique pollaxes which feels like the answer they are moving to. Again it doesnt matter how many additional weapons you add because all the properties that work well with your build could be dropped early and is random as for as the player is concerned. I mean this type of ranger build values stuff like wounding (prob best), coordinating, marking, vicious all work nicely with this ranger there are some others but if they are all dropped early it doesnt matter. This type of randomness isnt fun it makes your build less fun. Its not fun to give up a weapon for what is obviously a less optimal property like crit to pron in this case because of stunning shots simply because it randomly got a better quality designation by a random dev even though for a different build crit to prone would be great. It also maybe the case that i never see certain weapons like the crit to prone one because of role play reason. I mean i didnt help the dragon out so i didnt get a choice for this weapon anyways so there are issues like that to consider. And if you notice my use of pollaxe its not optimal because wounding would usually be better for this type of build so tidefall, drawn in spring for single or dual wield and persistence with bow. So i am not trying to start by saying what is optimal for this build let me look at wiki not that there is anything wrong with that and see best weapon and when it drops and build around only that weapon. I started with a weapon type i like because of aesthetics or i had role play reasons and just played the game. To me what i have described would be the experience of any new player. They may like certain weapon type and play with them but would be forced to use sub optimal or less attractive weapons later on simply because of the randomness of level designers with the quality enchantment. this same issue happens with armor as well. I agree that durgen steel kind a screwed up stuff. but the durgan steal, the lashing, and monster enchantments are all being fixed with the new system. We simply want the quality enchantments to keep up. And i still dont see how this hurt others from feeling like finding new pollaxes isnt fun and switching because they like new properties. All the change does is hurt the rest of us.
