I was talking to one of G's patients yesterday. Well, the patient's owner anyway. Her actual patients don't say much. He is a retired divorce lawyer. I told him a little about my experiences. He said it sounded like I was well represented both times. Anyway he told me a story that only reinforced my notion that humans not evolved primates but more likely DE-volved primates. His client was a well off middle aged man whose wife was having an affair. He had started the paperwork for divorce but not filed. Before filing he found out he had end stage cancer and would probably pass on within the year. He would be gone before the divorce would be near final. His wife became angry and spiteful when she learned he knew of the affair and told his she was "just waiting for him to die" so she could move her boyfriend in and "have fun" with his money. The lawyer said he's never seen anyone half so cruel and heatless. Coming from a lawyer that is saying something. So the man, his daughter (not related to the wife) came up with a plan. They changed his life insurance beneficiary from his wife to his daughter. Then waited. They didn't need to wait long. The wife maxed out one of his credit cards taking her boyfriend to Mexico for a vacation. So they filed for divorce then to put a freeze on martial assets. The man passed away shortly after and the will to his estate became a probate matter with the daughter and ex-wife contesting the estate. The daughter received the life insurance benefit and the lawyer said she was "set for life". Must have been a good one. The lawyer was so disgusted he offered to represent the daughter in the probate dispute for free. So now it's in probate court. The idea they had was not to win, it was to burn the estate to the ground. The daughter would end up with next to nothing from the estate but so would the wife. They forced the appointment of a Receiver and dragged it on for years. In the end the estate was settled with a four figure check for each. Over $1M in fees, receivership costs, etc had burned a million dollar estate to less than $20k. The daughter got the life insurance and the wife didn't even get enough to cover the cost of the trip she took to Mexico with her boy toy. I told him that was a great story! He said he's seen a lot of people get screwed over but that was the only time he felt good about it.3 points

I think that's Russian disinformation. Oby changed his name is and is now making German TV ads:2 points

Yes, "just curious". But MW beats me to any pro-Ukrainian news, most of the time. Other than that the pro-UA stuff I see will just be T-72s getting blown up and such, and I try to not gawk at that. Kherson is probably good news for Ukraine, but not sure what's to talk about as there's a blackout of sorts about it.2 points

And speaking of Eastern front, it looks like, Ukrainian defenders around Bakhmut, and hopefully around Lysychansk and Avdiivka as well, will have less busy week or two. This happened today south of Popasna and east of Bakhmut on the soil of LNR near town Hannivka. Looks like Russian army had a pretty big warehouse there...2 points

@GromnirThere is a distinction between what Coach Kennedy is doing and some of the other examples. In Lee v. Weisman for example the school graduation ceremony was opened and closed with prayer. That's a no-no. And I agree with them (the Court). It's a school function in progress with a captive audience. It is coercive. But in Kennedy's case the game is over. The official school function has ended. No one is obligated to return to the field once they have left it. The students that joined him chose to do so. And it was students from both teams often enough I understand. Certainly they could not have felt coerced. As I understand it he was giving motivational speeches with religious undertones. That MIGHT be questionable depending on when. If it was in practice or before a game or during a game that would be problematic. If it's after a game when the school function is ended and not in a place where the players are a captive audience (meaning not in the fieldhouse) then I don't see the problem. Anyone objecting is not compelled to participate. Go back to the bus or locker room and get cleaned up. Apparently one player felt he playing time would be cut if he didn't participate but that feeling was never put to the test. If it were and it was then that is a different story. I think firing Kennedy was still appropriate though. Suing to defend his praying after a game was one thing. That is his right. He took it to the press, social media, etc and created an unnecessarily combative atmosphere. That led to the folks in the stands mobing the field in support and created a somewhat dangerous situation. That was all on him. He turned a private devotion worthy of protection into a public spectacle and yet another tedious "culture war" battle. Sorry Coach Kennedy but that is where you lost me. And besides: "And when you pray, you must not be like the hypocrites. For they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and at the street corners, that they may be seen by others. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward. 6 But when you pray, go into your room and shut the door and pray to your Father who is in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you" Matthew 6:5 ESV2 points

• mini map (compass) • local co-op • More “fun” ways to get water or food • Better map, the map is extremely hard to read and understand (also why is it so dark??) • a “ledge grab” function1 point

I do love the very long names of these animes, but I will never watch them. You know what should tide you over1 point

I think that with many shows there just isn't a coherent plan in place from the get go and it shows in how things get stretched to wheel-spinning. Given how TV works that makes sense, but the end result is still not pleasant. Anyways, The Boys s3 ep7. Not Herogasm, but a fun episode.1 point

Guys, in like two days My Isekai Life: I Gained a Second Character Class and Became the Strongest Sage in the World will be released, and not much later Harem in the Labyrinth of Another World. Are you as excited as I am? Anyway, what to do to tide me over, perhaps watch Date A Bullet: Dead or Bullet? Questions, questions...1 point

Yeah, I watched it, it was pretty whatever, I didn't pay attention to anything that wasn't the main group (i.e. Steve, Nancy, Dustin et al.). Stranger Things started out as such a good blend of tension, intrigue, characters with actual development and arcs, fun and smooth dialogue/action, and some heartfelt resolutions...and what is the show now? It has lost all of that except for the "fun and smooth dialogue/action" because the show clearly had zero idea on what to do with its characters and became much more pre-occupied with the TV equivalent of wheel-spinning (i.e. staying in the same place doing the same thing over and over again). I guess it's what most people expect and want, but it all feels kind of rather hollow and pathetic to me. Lot of different paths they could've gone down with this show, but they chose this one.1 point

Either way you can pick up an Intel ax210 kit from aliexpress and get the best wifi/bt available, which is what I'm considering doing for my board (minus the kit), but I would need to completely remove it and remove the heatsinks to get access to the old wifi card.1 point

My primary concerns with SSDs are reliability/longevity and random reads/writes. The difference between 2000 MB/s and 3000 MB/s sustained reads/writes is pretty meaningless in the grand scheme of things when random reads and writes are much greater determiners of real world performance (unless you genuinely have some specialized use case). My personal experiences with SSDs thus far have been: three Samsung, four HP, one Hynix, two Sabrent, three PNY, and one Mushkin. So far, the only bad experiences were with the PNY drives, all of which had immediate problems right off the bat and of which two catastrophically failed within twelve months. Otherwise, everything else has been fine. All the others are still in use and work somewhere between well and superbly. Really, for most purposes, any SSD is more than adequate, so I don't usually stress out about the numbers as much as I do knowing that it's a decent brand (or a decent rebrand).1 point

The 970 EVO is considered to be the superior drive, AFAIK. Has actual DRAM instead of using HMB. HMB is fine for budgety stuff, but pay the extra $10 for the DRAM if you can - it was the key distinguishing feature that I waited for so long when I finally got my 2 TB SSD like a year and a half ago.1 point

We just got back from a family trip to Universal Studios in LA. We stayed at the Safari Inn, which is kind of a little historical icon that also is a fairly affordable family motel. Universal Studios was fun. We've visited before and it just tends to be a much more chill park than Disney. But it was pretty hot and we didn't spend too much time in the park itself. Instead we spent a fair amount of time exploring Burbank, which is a pretty interesting movie studio town. My daughter really wanted to visit the Hollywood Museum. I took her, but I told her it is a rough part of town compared to Burbank. It is right on Hollywood Blvd along the walk of fame. My kids are pretty good at navigating San Francisco and they understand how dense cities can dramatically change street to street, but my daughter's words were "I'm glad we went to the museum, but now we don't ever have to go back to that area." I think we will do the Warner Bros. Studio Tour next trip.1 point

The continuation of the report about one of the most elite Russian VDV (paratrooper) regiment from Kostroma, which I linked in April, after their failed assault on Kyiv. After operational pause in Belgorod, they were sent to Izyum. It definitely looks like, that the common Russians (at least in the towns where are the soldiers garrisoned) are slowly getting, what they were forced into...1 point

tl;dr - war will keep going and Ukraine can probably not win back the lost territory, so we should just stop fighting. Then lots of hot air about diplomacy, but no proposals about what exactly should be done except basically "just let russia have what they have now." They conclude that to reach peace, fighting should be ceased right now - which by the way I don't agree, as that just gives russia time again to reorganize... we have seen that in the past, more than once. I get it. War needs to stop, but the way they write it just sounds like "waa-waa, let just have russia take what they want, so we can get back to normal again."1 point

That's a good motherboard, although your earlier build had a WiFi + Bluetooth enabled motherboard, so is that something you actually needed? If so, the MSI B550 Gaming Edge is (somewhat confusingly) the WiFi version of the Tomahawk, and it's the board I personally run. The Gigabyte B550 Aorus Pro ax is slightly better specced though, shame it didn't exist back when I shopped. Minor at best, the advantages being ALC1220 audio vs ALC1200, and more USB ports. Mesh cases are commonly recommended these days unless you have a specific reason to avoid them, but probably not such a big deal in your situation as your chosen parts are pretty efficient. Front runners are probably the Corsair 4000D, be quiet! Pure Base 500DX, Fractal Design Meshify 2 (or Compact variant), Lian-Li Meshify II USB-C, Phanteks P500A, NZXT H510 Flow. EDIT: And in terms of SSDs, it tends to be a decision between older, formerly high-end PCI-E 3.0 drives and the new PCI-E 4.0 drives. Popular examples of the former include the Samsung 970 Evo Plus, as well as the WD SN750, Crucial P5 and Kingston KC2500. The latter is represented by the Samsung 980 Pro, WD SN770 / SN850, Crucial P5 Plus, and Kingston KC3000. Personally I'd choose whether I want a 3.0 or 4.0 drive then choose the cheapest of these drives in that category. I have an SN750 and KC2500 currently for what it's worth.0 points
