If you don't know ancient Greek, the first passage is a play on the opening of the Iliad: "Rage sing of Josh's Achilles, / accursed, that countless pains brought" (in ancient Greek "Josh" is, fittingly, the same name as "Jesus")... the second is from the part of the Odyssey where Achilles, in the Underworld, famously says he'd rather be alive as the servant "of a poor (lotless) man whose livelihood is not much" than king of all the dead.
