I see.

Just cos I have too much time on my hands:

(POE1, original Deadfire, new Deadfire, 4chan edit)

I gotta say thanks for posting these comparisons!

Also I am pleasantly surprised and happy to find that I prefer the "new deadfire" version in all cases.  Great job by the Obsidian art team, you are all the best!

Is there small version of the Xoti 4chan edit? I think it looks fantastic.

Edit: I didn't crop the small one. Just found it.

I'm quite torn myself, but I think there are significant improvements in the new Deadfire ones, so yeah, kudos to the team.

Am I the only one who I think that in case Deadfire, people from Obsidian are not capable of creating a portrait without huge jaws?
I miss the good old days when were portraits based on real people, so the proportions made sense.

I thought so too, particularly because Pallegina lost her sharp refined jaw line for a massive rounded line-backer jaw.

edit: Pallegina had a wide jaw in the first one, but all the Deadfire jaws are large in the same way. Pallegina used to have this elegant Olivia Wilde look about her.

Was trying to resamble more PoEI Pallegina: turned-up nose, lips, upper lip, square, less round, shorter but wider jaw,  and the skin color. Just wanted to post it, its not a "fix".

And dont look closely is my first time with photoshop >_<

Well, the good ole days aren't gone as Lindsey herself confirmed she used real-life portraits and people as inspiration for at least some of the portraits in Deadfire. Serafen for example is based on Ian McShane.

The fact that some of the portraits have been updated a bit I think is a sign that the team is willing to iterate and improve upon designs.

Even still, I do feel a bit bad for griping, if only because the work is a talented creative endeavor. But I guess that's the backer's privilege.

I think we has humans are very sensitive to facial details, and even when portraits are based on real people there is this mix between tge real person and creative character design layer. Even if Eder's new portrait is based on another Max von Sydow portrait, the creative layer may diverge in another direction. So it's always a tricky thing to balance. We get these 2D looks at a character, and it can be hard to rotate the art in a way that captures the character believably from another direction. I think a lot of this aspects are where my hangups lie.

Aloth's reference model was Milou van Groesen.

Pallegina has Ajuma Nasenyana as a facial reference.

Nothing much has changed between the two games to say that the portraits are radically different.  The artists just used different shots of the same models as inspiration.

Game's not out yet folks, you may find out it actually makes sense for a character to look the way they are presented.

Indeed.

The goal of the portrait's aren't necessarily to make every companion have a beauty pageant look.

Everyone's certainly the right to change and mod however they want but Maia looking masculine isn't in itself something wrong. Probably very fitting for the character they are conveying. I wouldn't for the world think of changing the original portrait of her.

That being said, I think the original PoE portraits of Edér, Aloth and Pallegina are superior to the new Deadfire ones, so I'm definetely switching those out for the old versions.

I'll do it, for a turnip.

I actually much prefer characters to have more unique facial features than be waifu-ified, but I’m completely with those that think Pallegina’s new portrait doesn’t look like her based on her POE1 portrait (which is almost a dead ringer for Rihanna). There is also definitely a strange underbite/ large jaw problem with all the Deadfire portraits. The new iterations are much improved, though.

Don't you think they don't know it? They just don't care. More sisnister reasons are hidden behind the players' not-likeness of already established and flesh-out characters' portraits, unfortunately :(

Essentially, I want all of the female companions to pander to my very limited and misogynist view of what a beautiful woman looks like

Personal choice is irrelevant: anyone that doesn't accept the creator's view of what a character's portrait should be, is basically a sexist, racist bigot

Zdenka Podkapová (born August 6, 1977) (also credited as Zdenka, Zdeňka Popová[1] or Zdenka Novotná[2][3]) is a Czech adult model, actress, and former gymnast.

*Cough, cough* What you want to say is:

I miss the old days when portraits were based on covers of porn magazines, not real people
