RANDOM VIDEO GAME NEWS THREAD!

Oh god, what a bunch of ridiculously written, preposterous vomit. Oh, wait, it's kotaku...

Nothing to see here, just another ridiculous kotaku article.

Up next, what does the situation in Lybia mean for YOU as a gamer?

"Alright, I've been thinking. When life gives you lemons, don't make lemonade - make life take the lemons back! Get mad! I don't want your damn lemons, what am I supposed to do with these? Demand to see life's manager. Make life rue the day it thought it could give Cave Johnson lemons. Do you know who I am? I'm the man who's gonna burn your house down! With the lemons. I'm going to to get my engineers to invent a combustible lemon that burns your house down!"

they haven't done that yet?

They probably compared it to CoD, I try to avoid those articles.

Kotaku's great. They show you the craziest most disgusting things they can find in Japan, then say they're all about multicultural understanding, when in fact they're just saying "it's their culture, let's not try to understand them, but hey hey, crazy tentacles!"

But man, that article is like a monument to TL:DR. I used to teach a kid like that in a university class. Writes 2000 words, only needed 70.

One big thing I picked up from that article is that Squeenix's recent final fantasies have actually cost them one of their biggest investors. Also pointed out that FFXIII was, by all accounts, designed but with each design team in a different room not realizing what they were doing for the end point

Square Enix made big losses, but they have some big games on the way:

Deus Ex: Human Revolution

Dragon Quest X

Dungeon Siege 3

Final Fantasy XIII-2

Final Fantasy Type-0

Final Fantasy Versus XIII

Hitman: Absolution

Kingdom Hearts 3D

Lara Croft

That's 9 potential million sellers. Then they have a couple of rereleases planned. If all else fails: Final Fantasy VII remake.

I dunno, I guess I'd find that funnier if my take on the situation wasn't the opposite: the Bio/EA fusion actually pretty much removed the "publisher" from the equation due to the position the old Bio studio leadership has within EA. They are now actually running the show on their own terms (well, as in having a direct responsibility to the investors), and the results are, well, open for anyone to see and interpret in different ways.

You're a cheery wee bugger, Nep. Have I ever said that?

It seems like they're trying to follow Blizzard but I don't think they'll get there.

I don't think so, at least not from a business model point of view. Blizzard's always been about releasing things when they are good and ready, Bio has opposite traditions going at least as far back as Throne of Bhaal... Blizzard's also been historically very good about providing support for their products and releasing things like Mac executables back in the days before hipsters found mac and it was only used by the 1.3 % who valued a good gui. ;)

At least that's my take, I don't think I've ever played a Blizzard game. :p

But as in having significant independence in a large publisher? Yeah, I think that might be a good comparison. I also think Riccitiello is less crazy than Bobby Kotick, as in he understands he's running a gaming company and not a dairy farm.

Well, that's the part why I think they're failing.

It's the whole being your own publisher, mostly owning your own games, being able to do your own thing where they're trying to follow Blizzard.

That's not a matter of opinion. You either show the numbers that say so or you're just trolling.

;)

I think you need to re-read the posts up there, because that accusation makes no sense whatsoever in the context of this thread or the quoted post. What part of what I said is even subject to numbers? I never said anything about sales or whatever.

Bioware Sports...

Planet Scan 2012

Moon Buggy Race

Pazaak Tournament (different cards available as DLC and preorder bonus)

Etc. ;)

Seriously... If JRPGs are stagnating, WTF are doing all the western FPSs???... All look same, play same, most of the time, they have even same shallow story behind, and you finish them bored after 6 hours of gaming...

The guy is whining, that Square should make games with already known characters... How the **** is this supporting innovation he wants to bring back into JRPGs??? Or does he want to see new Crisis Core released every year, just because it has Cloud in it? I personally do not want to see that happen, and I must say, I pretty much liked Crisis Core the first time I played it but I would say it was a little bit more than mediocre game... And I do personaly think that FFVII remake would be the worst idea ever, because after 15 years in development and millions of dollars spent, everyone would be complaining about it, that it does not play the same as original...

Games like Dissidia are fine, because they bring you the know characters once in a year or two, but the new stories have to be told... With the exception of Final Fantasy IX-2... If nothing else, THIS is the THING Square-Enix have to make before the end of the World as we know it ;)

EDIT: And about FFXIII-2... Can please anybody enlighten me, what is wrong with making a sequel for a game which "As of May 2010, the game shipped 5.5 million copies worldwide, becoming the fastest-selling title in the history of the series."?

Bioware never did any Sci-Fi to begin with, so I'm not sure what's being lost. Mass Effect is as much Sci-Fi as Resident Evil 5 is an adventure game.

As for the loss of Space Opera... about time. Space Opera's been overdone, especially in games.
