  1. I'm gonna be honest, I have very mixed feelings towards Soulbound weapons. Sure its really cool to find a Sword in a Stone and all that, but its kinda annoying having to use an underpowered weapon until you can fulfil some obscure requirement. And after you have them, all the other gear somehow feels worthless.
  2. The later updates add features, so I seriously recommend it. Now, why did you guys necro this 2 year old thread?
  3. Well, this could basically be looked at as another reaction check to your PCs nationality. But as much of a language geek as I am, I think this idea would probably be more trouble than its worth. Think of all the poor writers who would have to pull overtime to come up with all the fantasy languages PS Mi piacciono le frasi "Di verus" e "Eccosi". Valian e molto divertente!
  4. Playing some Xenonauts again. Its inferior to X-com 2 in almost every way and yet... so much fun.
  5. I'm afraid I agree with all these other fine gentlemen: no multiplayer please. Your main argument seems to be about replayability. I feel that with the high number of classes, multiple difficulty levels, and two expansions, Pillars already gives us great bang for our buck. Yes, eventually we'll get bored of it, but that's okay too. It's like a good meal: Eat until you feel sated, don't gorge yourself until you're sick of it. I hate to be a cynic, but games that try to be fun forever (MMORPGs) are designed to get players hooked so that developers can suck money out of them for as long as possible. Totally this! When I was a kid, I had a cousin who would play some multiplayer games (including Icewind Dale) with me via LAN, and admittedly, that was a blast. But playing with randoms on the internet is a completely different experience. There's so much whining and toxicity. I don't want to inflict that on Deadfire.
  6. I don't see it going quite that mainstream. It's not really a game that absolutely anyone can get into, you know? Nor is it a MMORPG or E-sport (thank Eothas). But of course, the more successful it is, the better for the RPG genre as a whole, so let's hold thumbs. Shame about Andromeda. I was also surprised at the early reviews. I was expecting them to worship it. If you want a beautiful triple AAA RPG, go buy Persona 5
  7. From the Q&A: JS: What we're trying to do right now is, we are using a new system where abilities by default, whether they're per encounter based or resourced based, they're not inherently per rest based. But everybody has a resource which is called Empower, and an Empower is a per rest resource that can be used to make the application of an individual ability much stronger. It actually raises your effective damage, or the duration of the thing, or its accuracy by quite a bit. The idea is that most of your abilities are per encounter based, and then if you're like, "I really need this fireball to hit hard and do a lot of damage", or like, "I really want this knockdown to just smack the crap out of this dude", the you use Empower which is a character-based, per rest resource. You apply it to it, that decrements the number of Empowers that you have to use, and then that's gone down. The only way that you get those Empowers back is by resting. Between the injury system and Empowers, that's how we encourage you to rest more. They're not reinventing the wheel, but they are experimenting a little. Sounds like there are encounter abilities, resource abilities (and if you're playing a multi-class, you'll have multiple resources) and empower per rest. If anything, it seems more complicated, so I don't think you need to worry about "dumbing down".
  8. Nice! If I have the option, I usually go for Japanese audio with English subtitles. So you know what's going on but keep the original flavor.
  9. Only 6.2%. Weird. Well, I suppose if you look at the Steam Achievements, it kind of confirms it. Only a mere 44% have completed Act I and it gets less and less as you go down. I mean, I won't tell other people how to enjoy their games but... seems like a waste of money.
  10. I think a simple adjustment to "find the wizard to stop the hollowborn plague" would have improved the story. They probably felt a more personal reason was better since it would be viable for evil characters as well, but it kind of feels like your PC is ignoring the elephant in the room (the Hollowborn plague), while instead trying to find a cure on the thinnest of evidence. Like, "Let's go investigate the Leaden Key in Defiance Bay! I'm sure that will help cure my insanity!" Would have made a lot more sense to go visit more animancers. So yeah, great world building, not so great critical path.
  11. Interesting video. To be honest though, I didn't find Tyranny to be nearly as deep as the narrator makes it out to be. I think it was because the Chorus and the Disfavored's squabbling seemed so childish and unnecessary in the beginning part of the game (and their two leaders equally childish and painful) that it was hard to get around to thinking about their cultures seriously. Heh, sort of makes me want to do another playthrough some day, to see if there's something more there.
  12. Yeah, we should probably cover our basics before we introduce crazy stuff. The Naga do bring back wonderful memories of Yxunomei though...
  13. Ah, Twin Elms, you were so close to the finish line! Your post is a bit long to comment on everything but to grab a few points: Not enough options when leveling: Sure, I can understand that feeling, we all want more options and for our character to feel unique. Although with 11 classes, I think PoE1 still gives you more options than many other games on the market. Never fear, with the introduction of multiclassing and subclasses in Deadfire, your options will be OVER 9000!!! The Stronghold: Yeah, no surprises there. I think this was universally the most hated/disappointing feature of the game. But it’s worth mentioning that it improved in later patches. The 3 factions: Yeah, they weren’t great either. I found the Doemenels to be a lot more fun than the other 2 though. You should give them a shot if you play again. The Reading: My advice here is don’t try to be “completionist” with the reading in PoE I never clicked on any backer characters. I thought that at times the language was a bit *too* flowery and could have benefited from the KISS rule, but there were also some really good parts. Combat: Music never bothered me I think this is a problem of taste.
  14. Haven’t played it yet (isn’t it only out next week?) I’m not a major shooting fan, so this Mass Effect isn’t a big deal for me, but I figure I’m gonna buy it if the reviews are good. But I was listening to a Kotaku podcast about the game this morning, and they didn’t seem too impressed. They bashed the controls, UI and called it “uninspired”. I’m thinking they were probably being too harsh but…
  15. Is anyone playing (or planning to play) Persona 5 when it comes out? It’s been out since September last year in Japan, so I’ve finished it long ago, but now it’s coming out in the West, so all of a sudden the internets are getting excited about it. I can confirm it’s a great game, and would love to know what you guys think.
  16. Yeah, to be a great bard, I imagine you'd have to be charismatic and have lots of musical talent. On the other hand, I imagine that you could become a Chanter just through study and practice, regardless of your crowd-pleasing ability. It's probably just because Kana is the chanter we know best, but I see them as singing history nerds.
  17. Well, the game says: ...their hallowed phrases stirs the collective memory of wayward souls around them, compelling them to generate magical effects in a kind of "reenactment." To do the hallowed phrases, I guess they need good voices. To tap the collective memory, I guess they need knowledge of history. So those are the key points. Things like actor, midwife, researcher etc. are probably just day jobs that overlap with those skills to a certain degree. The research that they do is probably something like anthropology.
  18. Well... there's already the Bareth's Blessing New Game+. That might cover it. C'mon guys, these ideas are too vanilla. The titles says CRAZY ideas that you will most likely NOT get.
  19. Good old Ultima 8 had an amusing way of dealing with this. Commit a crime, and the victim screams "Town Sorcerer!", who appears in a puff of flame and proceeds to blow you up. Well, it was amusing the first couple of times anyway... I agree that this generally isn't done very well in games and is probably the exact reason why PoE1 didn't have any pickpocketing. Calling the guards in is a good idea, but ultimately, if you've made an "enemy" of a plot critical NPC, the game sort of brakes, right? And unless committing crimes is a big part of the game, creating an entire court/jail sequence would be a huge commitment of resources. What they've said in the Q&A: Yeah, you can pickpocket people in this game. When you go to pickpocket someone, obviously if you do it right in front of their face, you fail. I don't know if it's a guaranteed fail but it's pretty much impossible. You have to be in Stealth mode, that's like the modal state—when you are in Stealth mode, your standard interaction with people is picking their pocket. If you want to talk to someone don't sneak up on them. When you interact with them you get a pop-up interface. It'll show you items that—it's not random, it's basically: you can take these items without being detected; these items you can take but you're gonna be detected. Sometimes you just don't care, "I'm going to take this and they're going to aggro on me and I don't give a crap". Then there's stuff that, you know, this on them but you can't. You can't take it no matter what. And that's how pickpocketing works. Also, as previously suggested, you can put explosives—you can put little alchemical bombs on people and blow them up. Which is very funny. KA: Can I reverse pickpocket a hundred full plate mails on a person and just root them? JS: No, you cannot do that. So its pretty clear when you're going to succeed and fail. I guess this is a good system. Edit: I think they also said that if a companion turned against you, they wouldn't "suicide attack" so they are thinking about this stuff.
  20. People who played slave characters, when you meet the slave trader in WM, is there any extra dialogue options?
  21. Not sure if you read the rest of the thread, but most of that stuff (the cones etc.) is in now. I don't know if equipment will influence anything though. I hope it does. At the moment (PoE1) heavy armour vs. light armour is just a question of damage reduction vs speed. Stealth would add another factor to that.
  22. Honestly, I don't think they have the time to program in so much detail for a single background. But roleplay-wise, yeah, your character will have some issues. Best sleep with one eye open...
  23. You sir, are cheeky. I was expecting a complicated explanation involving 3 DOS simulators, a floppy drive and a cat.
  24. This question feels a little premature 1 year before release but... probably? It seems like the designers intend it that you can take the companions either way depending on how you want to play them. It might depend on whether her primary (level 1) class is priest or monk. If it's monk, then maybe you'll be stuck with at least one level of that? Nah, they wouldn't make such a silly design.
  25. That's pretty old-school. How do you get that to run on a modern PC?
