C2B's Next-Gen Obsidian RPG Speculation thread

Recommended Posts

So, with Avellone hinting at a reveal somewhere soon in the future, I thought I may as well post my own guesses about what Obsidian's next rpg is going to be. (Already did that on other places as well)

It's mostly based on small bits the devs said/hinted at.

Ofc as always pure speculation. May be completly wrong

- Next-Gen (Duh, that is pretty much confirmed as well)

- Action-RPG, possible Hybrid.

- Victorian Era (or at least part) setting

- Cryengine 3

I'm not sure on which publisher (Current Guess is WB) or if the setting is licensed/original yet.

So, what are your guesses?

Victorian Era (or at least part) setting

Where do you base this? If this is true i would say Steampunk...ish

Honestly? Sampeling information and crossreferencing them with possible settings. Since then I have come across it several times reassuring me on the guess.

And victorian era as in set in that era, less steampunk fantasy though it may as well have it. Western is another possibility, but that wouldn't exactly be that contridactory regarding the timeframe.

Horror may be involved as well, though that I'm less sure about yet.

I don't think it will be Star Wars related. The Star Wars license is now in EA's hands and they have a big in-house RPG dev in the form of Bioware, so I doubt they'd go to Obsidian for that.

In this Kotaku article from a while back, Feargus said they were being contacted by Warner Bros (amongst others) to do an RPG with them.
Warner Bros has two big franchises that they like to turn into video-games: Lord of the Rings and their DC Comics IPs.
Warner Bros has also stated that they want to look into expanding their roster of DC Comics branded games beyond the Arkham games and Batman.
Could Obsidian's next project be an RPG based on a DC property?

This may all be wishful thinking on my part though.

When in doubt, blame the elves.

A Blade Runner rpg, an existential tour de force, focusing not on the titular retirement specialists but a single replicant: Where-in we can choose to accept our programming, our roles and their limitations. Or choose to not go quiet into that goodnight, to scream for life in the face of our creators and struggle against impossibility. To fight not for victory, but simply because the struggle is right and our participation is worthwhile.

Quite an experience to live in misery isn't it? That's what it is to be married with children.

I've seen things you people can't even imagine. Pearly Kings glittering on the Elephant and Castle, Morris Men dancing 'til the last light of midsummer. I watched Druid fires burning in the ruins of Stonehenge, and Yorkshiremen gurning for prizes. All these things will be lost in time, like alopecia on a skinhead. Time for tiffin.

Yikes, that article shines a light on the cutthroat business of publishing. I have a whole new level of respect for Obsidian, as well as a stronger dislike for the entitlement crowd.

My fervent hope is that Obsidian was able to take North Carolina and revive it with a different publisher. All that work for an original IP, plus the grief of layoffs, should not be in vain. If it's true that MS cancelled that next-gen game, I would love to see it released exclusively on the PS4 and PC.

If it's a license, a Star Wars license, please let it be Knights III.

All Stop. On Screen.

What ever their new game is, I do hope the setting won't be typical swords&socery or space fantasy. Those tend to be worn out and difficult to come with anything really interesting anymore.

Well..and Harry Potter.

Which is getting a new movie, based on Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them and Newt Scamander's adventures in compiling the information in the book.

The movie, written by JK Rowling, is supposed to start ~1918 IIRC, so not that far from Victorian era...

:p

I cannot - yet I must. How do you calculate that? At what point on the graph do "must" and "cannot" meet? Yet I must - but I cannot! ~ Ro-Man

A well done RPG in the Potterverse could be interesting indeed. There are other franchises that I'd prefer an Obsidian RPG set in, or even a new IP entirely, but you could certainly do worse than Harry Potter.

But isn't the Harry Potter video-game license in EA's hands? They did all the movie tie-ins.

When in doubt, blame the elves.

Well...that's a good question. The HP titles were licensed by WB to EA as WB has the rights to exploit the properties outside of books (with Rowling's ok).

So they probably licensed to EA for the previous movie series...but with that done I guess the question is whether the license with EA was done as well (some of the side projects, like Lego HP was put out by WB).
